Help please !! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

will a master reset work
or is there a better way (maybe android device manager ) or.....
Master reset from settings menu
From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap the Accounts tab.
Tap Backup and reset.
If desired, tap Automatic restore to clear the check box.
If desired, tap Back up my data to clear the check box.
Tap Factory data reset.
Tap Reset device.
If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password. Tap Continue.
Tap Delete all.

"SuperSU"
Use the app to unroot your phone. If you don't have it, get it from Play Store.
Navigate to settings > full unroot.
(You'll notice the app is uninstalled automatically after some time. Just reboot once) and Bingo! Your phone is Unrooted and back in warranty.
You no need to format everything and backup/restore and many more things. Just use the app.

After you remove root with SuperSU, you can perform a wipe data/factory reset from within recovery. Just boot to recovery and run the wipe data/factory reset, and all your installed applications will be gone. That will set it back to just stock.

If the knox counter has been tripped, that may be used as a reason for denying a warranty claim.

the knox counter was tripped but not barbecue of rooting (all my rooting i was careful and did ones that didn't trip knox)
i was trying to update but used a att i337 file and not bells i337"m" so it tripped it
if they deny it im gonna try and say one of there reps told me to update and use odin and i downloaded the wrong file but then redid it with bell and that why it tripped it
is odin a Samsung app ??

is odin a Samsung program (meaning samsung tech are aware of it and use it ?)
or is odin a hackers program ?

[Q] How to total reset the phone

So, I have a T-mobile version of Galaxy S, rooted, and then installed platinium backup to uninstall apps, by accident, I uninstalled some apps I don't want to. I just need to get some of the apps back, any ideas about how to do that? I don't mind even reset the phone back to the original state (without root, with all the preinstalled apps back.) How should I do it?
You can use
* settings / privacy / factory data reset ( never tested )
* swith off your phone and then up volume + home button + power button. Wait few seconds and then release the buttons. You will be in the recovery mode and you will have the possibility to hard reset

Did the first option last night, and it wipes all your data (except media like music and pictures). Removes all the apps, and only restores the apps that were preloaded on your phone.

I tried the first option as well. It only erase all the user data and apps, but it won't recover lost preloaded apps though. My understanding is that it is the same for the second option unless I put a new firmware somewhere. Right?

that doesn't do it, the true way is this via your phone pad

there is NO CONFIRMATION, it kills everything after the last #, so make sure you have a backup of what you want to keep

Just tried it. It doesn't work. It basically removed all user data and the apps I downloaded. It didn't recover the preloaded apps I deleted.
Reflash the phone and start from scratch.

ahh, if you want to recover those, then you'll have to re-flash your phone with the same firmware
here is a full list of firmwares that will restore the default apps
http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/samsungi9000.htm
make sure you select the one that corresponds to your exact model
Thanks. In that webpage, it did say "- If you come from America don't flash! (Ask for a firmware in the forums)". Is that a problem since I am using T-mobile (USA) phone?
Also, I tried the secrete code *#1234# through the dialer, nothing happened. Then I pushed "call", it says "USSD code running....", then says "unable to process request". How to dot that?
Thanks

[Q] Weird, weird issue - Home button/notifications panel don't work

To preface,
I'm running an AT&T LG G2 rooted (with a couple of Xposed modules). I'm running 4.2.2
Today, I rebooted my phone after updating some apps from the play store, and then all hell broke loose. Here's a list of what went wrong
1) ALL of my settings were reset. Sound settings, call settings, screen on settings, etc. EVERYTHING.
2) My home button doesn't work. It lights up - it knows I pressed it, but it doesn't send me to the launcher. I have the home button programmed through Nova Launcher to open my voice search when I'm on the home screen - that doesn't work either.
3) My notifications panel stays empty - nothing shows up. On top of that, the little "gear" icon that should take me to settings doesn't work. There's a gear setting above that for sound that DOES work.
4) When I go to "About Phone", my phone name was reset to "G2".
4) Here's the kicker - When I go to "About Phone", the "Software Update" button has disappeared. What the hell happened?
If anybody can solve this issue, I have a small bitcoin prize for you...
Edit: Noticed something new. I went into Titanium Backup and it gave me a notification that my "Device ID" was changed. It states that this commonly occurs after a factory reset or ROM change? Here's the thing - I've never factory resetted my phone or even installed a recovery for that matter.
Notice #2: Volume keys don't respond. Although changing volume manually through the settings does work.
Quick note: I changed a value in settings.db using SQLite manager. I tried changing "tether_entitlement_check_state" to 0. And then I exported the DB and saved it. Would that have caused an issue?
well all hell really did break loose here, have you tried entering download mode and flash back to stock(I'm pretty sure this isn't you want to do) but it might be the only thing to do

Interesting. Thanks for the link. I wonder, other than hiding the "root" flags, how is this different from performing a factory reset? I would be opting to restore 4.2.2, not Kit Kat.

well tis is different to a factory reset as in it makes everything the way it used to be like if you were just powering on your phone for the first time while with a factory reset- if you have lets say deleted bloat and modified anything in the /system or other areas they are gone forever, the factory reset is more like a wipe your phone and start again(sometimes if you are rooted it remains rooted just without the su app)

I'm pretty sure it does but I have always had doubts about that(I usually always wipe with custom recovery so I don't remember when was the last time I used factory reset option, plus I upload a most of my backups into onedrive/goole drive/dropbox) also using the flash to stock method will wipe everything from the phone like I said its like powering it on for the first time just in case you were wondering

Okay, so here's my plan. I'm currently ADB pulling my entire SD card (with the titanium backup contents) onto my laptop. I plan to factory reset (the default android one that's in the settings). If that doesn't work, I will use the other flash-to-stock method.
Once I'm done, I plan to use Titanium backup to restore everything including settings. Here's my question:
When I'm restoring everything, will it be 1-click? In the past when I had other phones, the only time I restored TB was when I flashed different ROMs, so it caused havoc with my settings. Since I'm keeping the stock-ROM software, will I be able to 1-click "Restore" and have everything be how it used to be (Except for the Xposed Modules of course) ?
Also...I really don't like how MTP hides the Titanium Backup folder...

Referring to TB, you can set it to restore your backups with 1 click through "batch mode", but I believe you need to have the paid version.
Anyway, everything's fixed! I actually just put a recovery on it, and then deleted data and cache. That way my internal sd card didn't get wiped.
And I did a little more searching, it seems like modifying the sqlite database when you try to remove AT&T's tethering check causes the weird issue. I wonder if it's a secret backdoor program that makes your phone unusable...

Can I use "Factory data reset" on MK2 rooted phone?

I'm running MK2 rooted and recently my phone stopped charging. I've tried everything to get it to work, I'm fairly certain it's a hardware failure. I know I can probably replace the connector myself, but I prefer warranty. I've backed up everything (via cloud) and now I want to restore to factory settings. I can't use ODIN because the problem also prevents me from connecting to a computer.
Is it safe to perform the phone's "Factory data reset". Will have restore to factory setup?
Thanks.

It should work just fine. Keep in mind the root binary is installed to system though so you might get custom flag for that.
I don't think factory reset works on rooted phones that have been encrypted.

Yes, the su binary will stay there and trip the custom flag. If you want to remove that, either download and flags the ODIN package for your system or use SuperSU to unroot.

Can't use ODIN, the USB port doesn't work. So, I un-rooted in SuperSU, restarted the phone, then performed the Factory Data Reset. Everything is now reset, the phone still doesn't charge, the USB port still doesn't work. However, now when I turn on the phone I get the "Custom" lock icon. Not sure what I did wrong. I guess I'll have to repair it myself now?

You might of still had busybox, or if you had frozen system apps or something. I'd say see if you can use towelroot real quick, install a busybox app, remove it, and then unroot again. You also need to remove safestrap if you ever had that. Before doing that, restart your phone a few times though, as sometimes it won't change immediately or will say custom after a fresh install.

I never installed Safestrap, but I did freeze a number of system apps using Titanium Backup and I never unfroze them before I did the unroot and factory reset. I also had Xposed framework and Wanam Xposed module still installed, which I now understand can cause issues.
What would you suggest I do to get rid of the "custom" lock? I've restarted the phone 6-7 times and the lock is still there. Would running Towelroot still work with my situation? Is there anything else I need to do before I unroot again, like unfreeze apps or revert the Wanam Xposed settings?
Thanks for you help.

[Q] Will downgrading void my warranty to 0x1 G901F

I've had a terrible battery life experience with lollipop on my G901F. I've disabled and tried everything. I have the UK EE G901F with that spyware tracer agent thing on there too on 5.0.2
I want to go back to stock KitKat (I've never rooted)
Can I do this without rooting and without voiding my warranty to knox 0x1?
And will going back remove that tracer agent thing?

Yes you can downgrade and NO your knox wont trip as long as you are flashing the stock firmware and are not rooting.
1 Here is a list of available EE firmwares http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G901F/EVR/ download the required one.
2 Go into recovery, TURN off the phone and press power+volume up+ home all at once, once in recovery perform factory reset> clear dalvik and also clear cache.
3 Then Put your phone in download mode (turn it off and press power button + VOLUME DOWN + home button all at once. It will warn you about installing custom firmware (dont worry its just a warning) press the appropriate key i think its volume up to continue. Once in download mode Connect your phone with usb cable. Right click on odin and run as admin.
4 click on "AP" and locate the stock firmware you downloaded earlier.
5 It will freeze for 8-9 seconds when you select the file (dont worry its verifying file)
6 once normal click options tab make sure ONLY AUTO REBOOT AND F.RESET TIME are checked *** DO NOT CLICK ANY OTHER OPTIONS***
7 once confirmed click start.

I think you should do a factory reset because you are moving from Lollipop to kitkat its always better to do so but i am no expert on this so i am suggesting you to do it just to be safe. You will loose everything on your phone (except things on sd card like if u hv music on sd card it will not be formatted) but you can backup your pics and music on your pc and then restore afterwards. For contacts and sms backup there are many apps on market i use super backup by mobileldea studio, it will generate sms and contacts backup which you can move to ur pc and then reinstall the app and restore afterwards..... This way you will have your phone as brand new....note that poor battery life maybe due to some app or wakelocks so doing it this way will ensure that all of that gets fixed.

Also, on the link you provided, why are there multiple versions of the same android version? There are 3 kitkat versions.

here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G901F/EVR/ you can see different versions of Kitkat click on any file and it will show you its PDA, BUILD DATE AND CSC all versions are different i suggest you get the last kitkat release 2014-12-03 it should be most stable.
Your Second question that what is the difference between BOD1 AND BOC4. These represent "PDA" of the rom Think of them as different builds of the same rom. For example when lollipop came out it had PDA BOC4 and then samsung removed some bugs and released it again, this time it would have a different PDA for example it could be BOD1. So what going from BOD1 to BOC4 means that you are moving to a more recent version of the same lollipop rom...maybe it has bug fixes.

You can try going to Safe Mode:
1. Reboot your device
2. Hold down the Volume Down key while booting up
3. You are now in Safe Mode
4. Go into Settings -> Apps, then find the overlay you think is messing up and uninstall
I'm afraid it makes no difference

OK, I read this 'tutorial' here on XDA. Have not tried myself but see if it helps. If it works please report back. It would be nice to known for future reference:
How to recover if the above doesn't work? (Credits to Evozi)
You will have to boot up in Safe Mode (comes default on every device)
1. Turn on screen and press power button. It will show "Shutdown", "Restart", "Emergency Mode"
2. Turn on "Emergency Mode", keep spam the checkbox so you can tick the checkbox to proceed the agreement. (phone is super lagging)
3. While you are in emergency mode, you have very limited access. Open any system app and go to recent task list.
4. Long press the app task, press the info icon and app detail page will appear.
5. Hit the back button and it will show your whole app list.
6. Find your overlay and remove all its storage and phone permissions.
7. Deactivate Emergency Mode and now you are back to TouchWiz.
8. Uninstall the overlay app.
Can't check the agreement with th fc window all the time, any trick for that?
