Will it be USB 3.1 or like on One Plus Two?
What do you think?
I think that because Google is behind some of the tech choices (like all Nexus devices,) it will be USB 3.1. The Nexus devices have always been a way for Google to show what they think the next generation of Android phones should include.
USB C is a fantastic connector and is much better than the Micro B connector we have all gotten used to, but just switching the connector hopefully won't be good enough for Google. They'd be stupid not to take advantage of the newest USB standards and everything that comes with it.
So, my bet is on the 6P having USB 3.1.
i believe that the new nexus' will have the type c.. since marshmallow will support it .. and this is from google themselves

all of the leaks pretty much confirm USB C as a thing on the 6P and 5X. Im just hoping they are able to implement fast charging through them
In the leaked slides Google said it will have faster data transfer with USB Type-C so that implies its USB 3.1 but we will know for sure tomorrow
I'm about 99% sure it's just USB 2.0 Type C.
All of the accessory cables on google's store page are USB 2.0.
Sucks, but oh well I guess :/
Edit: AndroidPolice confirmed USB3 not USB2!!!
WOOHOO!!

At I/O, two of the big announcements were about the 3.1 release which includes USB host capabilities and the new ADK for open accessory development so you can plug all kinds of things into your device and control them via Android. BUT as far as I can tell the Galaxy Tabs don't have any USB ports to take advantage of either of these advancements. Seems like it is already seriously limited in capability before it even hits the shelves....Thoughts?

Samsung probably sell the USB host controller as a separate accessory and from there, ADK device connects into it. Of course, its better to have it IN IT in the first place, but not a dealbreaker
Wish there was a micro USB port on the tablet, but Samsung did announce at CTIA that they'll have a USB connection kit. Just like the iPad, it's a USB connector that plugs into the Samsung port.
Saw this bundle on Amazon http://www.amazon.ca/Skque-Premium-Protector-Earphone-Charger/dp/B006OIQC04/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&m=A3VAVEQC03JY97&s=generic&qid=1325865654&sr=1-15 and noticed that it included a micro usb car charger. Would this work with our tablets?
??? The manufacture says it will.
The a500 doesn't support usb charging, supposedly there will be an update to allow it.

Do you have a link to a source stating that there will be an update to allow it?
It doesn't make sense to me, because the hardware physically can't support it (USB can only deliver 5V, whereas the A500 wants 12V IIRC)
It won't work like stated before a micro usb charger won't have the juice to do it. When you plug in the micro usb the charge light does not come on. Not supported and I don't know of any update that will change that.
Update: I just actually clicked on your link and the whole bundle is suspect. The wall charger is even a micro usb. Won't work, perfect example of a company throwing together a cheap bundle to entice the consumer that he is getting a great deal. I bet the chargers aren't even 1000ma which would be the minimum need to charge our tablet if it supported it.

Ok ..
Something just came to my mind.. .
I have a new notebook. that has a usb/sata port.. Now i know it required a special cable that is designed for a usb to sata hard drive to use it with a sata hard drive without a enclusure and it runs at the speed of a internal sata port.. when you connect a hard drive to this port . it shows up as a sata drive not a usb drive..
the drive i use is a 3.5 inch 2 tb hard disk that is 12v-5v..
so with this said. its actually pliable that this could work.. But im thinking our iconia does not have this type of usb port.. I will add the 12v usb /sata cable and hard drive will only work on that one usb port on my notebook. the others will not even register it.. If this is a device used in a usb/sata then connected to the Power port of the iconia.. there is a chance such a device COULD be created...
ok im rambling.. Because i DO NOT THINK THIS IS EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT.. most people do not even know this usb/sata shared technology exist....

Dont be sorry, it is very interesting input. I am quite annoyed though because I was actually pretty stoked about having a USB charger. I agree the battery life is pretty good on the Iconia but there are always those days where you forget to charge the thing before going to work. (Thats what got me looking on Amazon in the first place)
I am doubly annoyed that someone might actually buy this and get a big disappointment when the product actually arrives.
Very curious about this SATA / USB port though. Time for some google fu!
i read the manual from HP with not much said in there other then its called a. USB/e-sata port.
I do also know its usb 3.0 standard this notebook is the HP dm1-us3020 model.I think the z version of this notebook does not have this port.the notebook is based on the and Fusion CPU.and gets 7 plus hours batterylife with moderate use.
Charging it is another story.its I think 9 cell li 19.7 v charging brick spent 125.00 for car inverter for this thing grrrrrrrr.
OK im at hair salon and its my turn.
wish me luck.

Yes that is the port.as I said above it will run a 3.5 hard drive connected with nothing more then a cheap USB to e-sata unmanaged.(no chips or resistores in cable) type of cable.for all I know all newer notebooks might have one.
I was just making a point that you could in theory charge your Iconia from this port to the Iconia power port.
As the hard drive requires12 vfrom my knowledge.but im not cutting my cable to try it.Don't ask Giggles.

Very interesting. According to wiki, laptop eSATAp ports deliver 5v and desktop eSATAp ports deliver 12v. Not sure where in the computer the extra v come from.
I don't have the charger with me so I don't know the specs but I'm wondering if a USB 3.0 to iconia power plug cable would hypothetically work?
Amazon item from op
I got very frustrated after looking around on amazon today for something diffrent.. Frustrated seeing this add for the product you talk about all over the iconia a500 searches on amazon.. So i emailed them about this product . giving them the specs of the a 500 along with a link to the required charger. I also did a review of the product warning anyone from buying this...
I suggest others do the same ITS JUST OUTRIGHT FRAUD...... the seller sent me a response stating the device will do what it says. well not for my iconia it will not..
Connecting some dots here. This is pure speculation and it might sound crazy but hear me out.
It has been rumored for a while that Google is adding a dockable desktop mode in Android, maybe similar to the WebTop OS in some Motorola Phones. There have been patents filed and reports claiming that it would release in Jelly Bean. That obviously didn't happen but maybe it is coming in 5.0 (Key Lime Pie?)
Samsung changed the MHL connector from a 5-pin configuration to 11-pin on the Galaxy S3. People were upset because their old MHL adapters would no longer work. Why did they change it? Changing to the 11-pin configuration allows USB Host support (OTG) with HDMI support simultaneously. I have yet to find a connector with both HDMI and USB ports so I'm assuming they are saving this functionality for down the road.
With a desktop mode, more RAM will obviously be needed with increased multitasking. Samsung reportedly upped our S3's to 2GB ram to make it more "future proof" for potential Jelly Bean hardware requirements, which ended up not being even close to required. Perhaps they were thinking that Jelly Bean would bring a desktop mode, but it was saved for a future Android release? Or perhaps they are planning on implementing some sort of Ubuntu for Android functionality?
Thoughts?
Hmm any bored people with experience want to try splicing a 11 pin MHL cord into a OTG and 5 pin MHL? Thinking about it now.. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible unless software is limiting it.. *And at that point is where I guess the devs come in*
This is excellent I just recieved my S3 MHL 11-pin connector, now to try it out tonight with OTG.
Hi danben7, does your mhl cable support simultaneous hdmi and usb-otg? I just ordered the Motorola Lapdock and was hoping to rig a set of cables to enable to use my S3 as a mini-laptop thru the Lapdock.

Nope, unfortuanetely it's not possible. MHL to HDMI needs the charger to be plugged in to the extra port.
Unless in the future samsung release a new MHL connector with OTG together, i don't see it happening. Honestly I don't know why they changed to an 11pin connector.
I totally see this happen for several reasons.
It will be the perfect competitive to Win8
Key Lime pie could suggest a big change since L follows K in the alphabet
At the IO they said the chose ASUS because the like what the do with the transformer series
The new Chrome OS version (v19 and newer) looks like the tablet mode of ICS.
Just add on-screen buttons next to the running apps and enable Widgets
Onskreen and Wind River show that Android can easily support a multi-window mode
Ubuntu on Android looks very promising
The 5 Nexus devices rumor suggest a Key Lime Pie launch before christmas
The 5 Nexus devices will include a ASUS device (I think) -> a ASUS device that is no 7incher will
be a perfect fit for a desktop mode
At least a slow joining between Android and Chrome OS is confirmed by leading Chrome OS developers
I think JB is just a antedated part of the planned yearly release cycle, to compete with Amazone and to
push Android Tablets

Can you still use USB 2.0 cable to charge Note 3?

Yes you can. One side of the port can used with a standard Micro USB cable. The linked article even contains a note about it:
Although it's much wider than the Micro USB connector you're used to, the new port is actually backwards-compatible: a regular Micro USB cable can plug into one side of the port.

Bloody hell! It actually does! You can use a USB Micro cable on a USB3.0 port.
Can confirm the port works with regular micro USB (and Smart Dock, and regular USB OTG cables). Lucky enough to have played with a Note 3 for half the weekend just gone.
But you can't use a an apple 30 pin connector on a lightning port apple product, you have to spend $29 more per cable or risk damaging your device. Ah, the beauty and elegance of industry standards.

I recently put a new deck in my car, and the ONE reason I spent the money I did on it is because of the MHL capability. Now it seems all these new phones don't support MHL. None of the newer Samsung do, and it seems if I'm trying to get one of the top competitor phones, MHL is no longer an option?
Did anyone see/read/hear of MHL being a thing on the 6P? If it turns out that MHL isn't an option stock on this phone, is MHL a thing that can be added via a custom rom, or is it purely hardware?
Thanks for ANY and all help guys!!

Haven't seen any news of it, but can confirm there's hardware required as the USB port is different (at least on regular micro usb phones, NFI with USB-C). I can't even plug an MHL cable into my S6, whereas friend with Note 4 it all works easily.
M.
That's kind of what I was thinking as well. Apparently they got rid of the MHL support completely in the S6 and Note5 Line. I read that they don't even have MHL in the Nexus 6.... So I'm really afraid they might not have it here either.... Kind of sucks I guess.
I am about ready to tuck a Miracast adapter behind my dashboard. Then there's no fussing with cables or anything

An alternative solution is chromecast has screen mirroring support. Tested it last night with the new chromecast app. Worked very well.
Chromecast needs the phone to be a hotspot and have internet connectivity at start up. Works if the conditions are right, so depends on where you live.

Only bad thing about that is there won't be a way to charge the phone at the same time.
and it does not work. Apparently google took the easy road and implemented only USB2.0 with USB Type C.

From what I understand, this phone does not support Qualcomm's QuickCharge. Every Google page on this phone says "Fast Charging". That's freaking bogus, too. It's part of the Qualcomm 810 processor. Why the heck not??? If the hardware is in there, its possible it could be enabled through a kernel tweak. No guarantees though.
And for that matter, that processor supports wireless charging through metal. Just give me DISPLAYPORT!

Unfortunately, it does not support "Quick Charge" Everything Google has said is "Fast Charge" which is not the QC standard. All your chargers you have now, are slow and useless to the 6P.
