Quality Control Issues With Moto X Pure?? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been looking into buying the Moto X (I think we are all drooling over it) and I came across some post about some QC issues with defective devices and things like that. I'm wondering how many of you are actually having these issues and if so, how is Motorola customer service and can you easily get a new phone without much hassle?

I have reached a point, where if several reputable review sites have no issues. The complaints to me are outliers.

I don't have my phone yet, but I had quality control issues with my Nexus 6. Motorola support is great. They kept sending me like new phones and each one had a screen problem. After 3 replacements they gave me $50 in Motorola credit and finally sent me a brand new phone. And that's the one I am using now. But yeah their support is really good and they try to help you out.

No issues with mine. Very good build. Feels as good as any phone out there.

Mine is perfect.

I have no issues with my moto x at all, love the phone. Battery life, build quality, cell signal is great, the screen is bright and crisp.

I had a device delivered with a screen that wouldn't turn on. The phone itself was on because I could get haptic feedback and audio tones when I adjusted the volume, but no matter what I did I couldn't get the screen to come on. I spent roughly 4 hours jumping through hoops for tech support before they would issue a replacement. I'm now waiting for that replacement, and have decided that if the replacement is faulty in any way I will be returning it and not giving them a third chance. We'll see. All I can say is it has so far been a pretty awful experience, and I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone else.

One of my speaker grill covers was VERY lopsided, the left side was below being flush with the surface of the phone and the right side stuck up to where the bottom of it was exposed. I tried pushing it back in, but it fell out instead. I couldn't make it stay after that, so I put in for a replacement and they said it would be at least 2 weeks, maybe more. So in the mean time I super-glued the speaker grill back in and it has held good for the last week. Since that was my ONLY problem, I cancelled my replacement and am going to keep my current one as I'm afraid I may get one with another, worse, issue.

Moto X Pure Return Process Not so Bad
I received a Moto X Pure with a slight imperfection on the display. Half of the screen is a slight shade different than the other half. Everything else on the phone is perfect, and I think it is a great device. That being said, I called Motorola and they are replacing my device with a new one, and it won't cost me a penny. I get to keep using my current device until I receive the new one, and they emailed me a return shipping label for the defective unit as well as a redemption code to go onto Moto Maker to build my replacement device. I haven't received the replacement yet, but I am having a pretty positive experience so far with the process. I say go for it and just order one.

Screen quality on Juno, did the hardware change?

Alright, long story short, I bought the Juno from Tmo several months ago. One of the reasons I was so impressed with it was the incredible screen quality, it was crystal clear, far better than any other PDA phone Id seen, at least out of what was available at Tmo.
Anyway, that phone got stolen, and the replacement I was sent had very noticeably inferior screen; not clear at all, pixelated. Not to mention a horrible viewing angle. All problems I never had with my original. So I had them send me another replacement, and it was fine again, just like my first one.
Fast forward, that phone dies. They send me another replacement, and the screen is no good again, same horrible quality as the previous replacement. The next several replacements I ask for to fix this issue have the same thing.
All the new Shadows at local Tmo stores are that way too, none of them come close to the first one I had in screen quality.
So my question is, what gives? Did HTC change their screen hardware, or have I just gotten 5 bad apples?

I myself have a Shadow right now, altho not overall what I excepted its really nice for what it is. I miss my qwerty keyboard and touch screen. I'm actually thinking about exchanging it for a different phone. Unless you want to buy it? But the quality is great. Battery life is good.

The keyboard on mine failed. The replacement has an inferior screen and is missing some features of my first unit like the newer Live client and "driving directions" link on the neo interface.
It's kind of a bummer. The folks at the TMO store were clueless.

To be very honest, I've never met a TMO store clerk who had a clue. I pull my Shadow out at the store and thay are just in aww.
Make T-Mobile keep sending you replacements. I had to go through like 5 replacements in like two weeks in July until I got a good screen shadow. They'll usually waive the shipping off the bat so if the rep is gonna charge you, push to get it waived. They don't care about quality control so don't pay other than the first time. I paid for $15 express overnight the first time and they overnighted for free every other time.
The clueless reps won't believe you. They'll tell you to do a hard reset and go to contrast settings... so what I did was I made a tinyurl of a good thread with pictures right in the first post.
Before you waste too much breath and time, tell them to go to
www.tinyurl.com/shadowscreen (yes the reps have internet access).
That saved me so much time in the phone calls ordering more replacements. After the 2nd or so replacement they didn't believe me anymore so I had to show them.
After the 4th, they made me go to a T-Mobile store to have a rep confirm the issue in person. What I did was bring a friend's good shadow and a bad replacement. The rep couldn't tell a difference with both shadows on the home screen.
He thought I was just picky. Then it hit me to show him the pink T-Mo bootup screen. I tilted them side-by-side and he finally saw the difference and apologized for doubting me. The bad one would go from pink to red to brown while the good one would stay pink in any angle. He made the note on my account and customer care did not give me anymore problems. It didn't matter though because the next one was my good one.

New Hardware
Yes, T-Mobile decided to change the screen hardware, but I was not aware of the screen resolution being degraded. The only bulletin I have seen refers to the screen being changed to help with them not being as prone to cracking. I am one of those "store clerks" and I am not clueless...LOL.
Figures. Half the reason I bought the phone was the amazing screen quality. Any idea if its possible to get an original still?
The "inferior" quality screens started to appear about 9-10 months ago. Here is a post I submitted at Allshadow forums showing the problem in January. I've seen the pictures used in many other forums, which was my purpose in posting:

Since then, my wife's Shadow died and we received a replacement. Unfortunately, it was a bad one... I requested a second one, and it was the same. Then I decided to just sell it rather than dealing with multiple replacements again. Besides, they are a bit more "resistant" to send you replacements 9 months after purchase as opposed to when you are still in your return period
The Shadow I am using has the perfect screen. If something happens to that one and I get a bad replacement, I'll probably sell it and get another HTC device...

I accidentally cracked the screen on my shadow the other day, so Im going to try buying a replacement screen online and see if I get lucky and score one of the original, higher quality screens. It would seem that T-mobile doesn't have the good one anymore (6 "crappy" replacements later). Lets just say they aren't very fond of me; 2 call center reps I talked to knew me by name when I would call back...
Anyway, the screen should be in soon, Ill post here with the results

Well, I saw an auction for a Shadow on ebay, and thanks to the wonderful pictures the seller posted, I could tell it was an original Shadow, with the original, glorious screen. It was kinda messed up otherwise, but I bought it anyway, took the screen out and put it in mine and voila, amazing Shadow!

I bought my Shadow on eBay a couple months ago and i've noticed the screen problem also, do you guys know i i'll able to get a replacement even if i didn't buy it new?
No, sadly. All of the current Shadows have the new, lower quality screen. You would have to find an original on ebay or from another person and switch the screen out (Or use the phone, if its intact)
I just hope the Shadow 2 doesn't also have the crappy screen.
strange problem
I bought a Shadow on ebay and found that the wifi working but the phone will not get a network. It would just show searching again and again. I bought another from ebay that was working well before a broken screen.I took the board from the last fone i bought and install it on the first. everything working apart from the WIfi showing "driver not installed". I then know it was the Dpad section so I changed it then wifi is working but screen color and quality change. I got a strange yellow color and at different viewing angles it would change.I reused the first Dpad and everything is ok apart from wifi. Do you need a matching Dpad flex for special screen?? and wifi???

[Q] Did you have to replace your NookColor due to quality problems ?

I'm more and more concerned about the quality of the NookColor due to countless complaints about the display and charging issues.

Yes, I had to replace my NC (Christmas gift) within the first 2 days. However, it was due to a sound issue - also discussed on several websites - and it couldn't have been an easier process. My local B&N said that of the hundreds of NCs they'd sold, mine was only the 2nd exchanged. I think that's a pretty safe ratio. My new one has had no quality issues at all. Given that I've had to replace PCs, smartphones and other electronics for quality issues, this doesn't seem too out of the norm.
I've had to replace mine as well. First due to sound issues. Now the piece of plastic around the "N" button isn't completely flush with the screen. I'm not taking it back for that reason because the rest of the hardware is fine. I do, however, have to get a new NC cable since the one i have now won't charge my NC. If it's not one thing, it's another.
Had to replace mine too, xmas gift, due to screen quality. There was a lot of light leaking along the bottom edge and a dead pixel. Super fast and easy, even transfered the extended warranty right over to the new serial. New NC is perfect so far.
Those with sound issues what were your symptoms?
Mine's been great. I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from buying.... I'm not discounting the issues people have had (multiple returns is certainly eyebrow-raising), but I'm sure for every problem you hear about on the forums, there are many with no problems that you just don't hear about.
Mine has been great, aside from one dead pixel. Can't even notice it for the most part, especially since adding one of the anti-glare screen covers.

I just replaced mine today for sound issues!! Every time it would hibernate I would lose all sounds and the only way to get them back was to reboot.
Not an issue in sight. No screen problems. No sound issues. My biggest complaint is no bluetooth.

No problems at all here 3 weeks in. I visit the B&N forums somewhat frequently and never heard of the sound problem before reading this thread.
My biggest problem is reboots after rooting.
First one dust under screen, dead pixel dead center.
Second one dead pixel lower right corner.
If you look at various sites, you will realize that there really is a quality problem that seems to be more centralized to screen issues/plastic noise.
Also realize that most of the issues are not major hardware failures but simple flaws.
Another thing to notice is that people are willing to exchange multiple times in efforts to find a keeper because the unit is just that good.
3rd one is on it's way! 1st & 2nd one had display issues...!!! Stupid me bought it online & as a bonus, it can't be exchanged in local B&N shops...
Yep ... 5 times. 6th (current) one is great, first 5 all had dead pixels.
I suppose it does say something about how awesome I find the device (once rooted), for me to go through that much trouble driving around getting it replaced ...
Got mine on release day and have had -0- problems ... got a second one a week b4 Christmas and it also was 'perfect' .. no performance or plastic problems ... live in a 'low demand' area I think and perhaps B&N is 'reprocessing' some of the returns that then get shipped to high demand area? Or maybe it's just luck of the draw ... anyway am really pleased with the two I have ...

My front Bezel starting becoming unstuck at day 12 of the 14 day return period. It was showing the stretching glue on the left side that creaked. I noticed it warping and looked at it in landscape mode from the top.. Surprise!

Ok, I am B&N is sending my 3rd replacement. (Not Rooted!)
1st one would not boot/reset after plugging it in to recharge.
2nd one reboots and reloads on its own. Called tech. support and had me do a factory reset but the next day did the same thing but came up with an install failure.
My cousin bought one on release date and had no problems with her's.
My first one(Tursday) came OOB with a borked USB port on the NC. I managed to get the cable inserted twice on Thursday(almost took it back the first time that I plugged it in but the cable finally went in as I was about to give up). The next morning no amount fiddling would get the connector to insert properly.
Had a horrible time exchanging it. The idiot at the register kept trying to tell me that it was "fine" and that was how it was "supposed to be" until I made him hook up the power adapter, point out no LED, took it over to the demo unit and demonstrated there, got them to get their charger out try it in the obviously defective one and couldn't insert that cable either. Finally they gave in and deigned to exchange it. After all of that I had decided to check the exchanges connector right then and there, and lo and behold it was just like the demo unit and obvious VERY clearly inserting unlike the defective unit.
B&N have crappy QA, cs, and sales. No wonder they're in trouble... I think that if anything crops up w/this one before my 14d are up its going back permanently. I probably should've bought it from the Worst Buy literally across the street or Walmart for better cs alone.

IIRC correctly , the hardware is by Inventec (Taiwan). As far as problems, none... nada... zero... zilch with mine, nor have I had problems with either of the "classic" Nook ereaders that we have.

Evo's are Backordered...

So I just got Sprint to put in for a new (well, or refurbed) EVO for me, and unfortunately they are back ordered. The guy I talked to seemed to have no clue how long it will be before they receive my replacement. Are any of you guys in the same boat and does anyone have any info on how long it might be? This Samsung Rant isn't really the phone I'd like to be using haha. Thanks.
Everytime they told me refurbs were backordered, I still got them within 3 days. I can pretty much guarantee you it wont be more than 2 weeks, at the very most.
That would be awesome if it is only three days, maybe i'll have it by wednesday or so. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have reason to be optimistic!
They said that to me that a few weeks ago and told me since we have no refurbs we have to give you a new one. This was the sales leader in the store so I guess if you know the rules you may be able to get a new one if you give them a nudge.
looks like sprint is having a lot of problems with the quality of the htc evo, is a nice phone but the quality is bad. Is made for Sprint, that is why.
No, they are on back order because Sprint was covering physical damage. People were destroying their phones.
The policy changed yesterday, so recon stock should start to level out again.
The rep told me the same thing. A lot of people have been calling in about dust under the screen on the top left recently. Apparently its an issue only seen later on in the life of the device. HTC is really disappointing me.

I'll take the bait... I think the Evo is on par or if not better quality than any other similar device. Truth is, whatever went wrong with my Evo was probably my own fault.

HTC's phones have horrible build quality. Though it is a bit interesting, the Nexus One didn't seem to have a whole lot of build quality issues.
My EVOs build quality is junk. My previous phone was a Hero, that was worse!
The iPhone has the best hardware on the market. It is way way above anything else out there.
I just added my wife to my account today and ordered an evo... no problems here

Got to love that anecdotal evidence. My HTC has been great, therefore it is the best phone on the market.

I had that dust under the left top corner of the screen a couple months ago and sprint replaced the glass. Then I bricked my phone like an idiot and was to impatient to recover it so I filed an insurance claim and they overnighted me one. Brand new. Now I have 2 but not sure what to do with the old one.

maybe you need to make that switch to verIzon then... ive owned 3 htc phones (tilt, touch pro and evo) and never had problems with build quality or hardware issues. i use all my phones for work and i have dropped, stepped on, sat on, used in the rain and countless other acts of neglect and every time picked the phone up and made a phone call with it
First, to the OP, I've been told by store personnel, that it is STORE POLICY that they *HAVE* to give you a brand new one if refurbs are backordered and they have new ones in stock at the store. Don't let them weasel out on you, and you get left holding a backordered, smelly ol' refurb. And yes, I've had refurbs that STUNK to high heaven of perfume.

Every HTC device I've owned has failed from QC issues, usually multiple times.
My 6700 and 6800 both succumbed to key failures on the keyboard. I tried the usual fixes (contact cleaner, vigorously "massaging" the keys), but nothing worked and a keyboard where 1/3 of the keys are dead is useless. When I got my Touch Pro, brand new in the box, two of the keys cracked off onto my lap while he was activating it - the Best Buy sales person was horrified and got me a new one. A few months later, the external Back/End button kept creeping higher and higher until it fell off. The replacement would reboot every few minutes, so that one went back too. Then my brand new Hero had an unresponsive Menu button, didn't notice that until I got home though. Swapped it out for a new one, the new one had dust pouring in the bottom left corner (if I remember correctly) after about a month, then the vibrator stopped working. Had to RMA that one, the replacement was shipped to my door, and the trackball was GONE - not even in the box, just simply gone! The replacement for that had a squishy "OK" (trackball press) button, but I just lived with it. My original Evo had cracks in the body (power button, and near the volume buttons), the screen was separating to the point where it'd get caught in my pocket, the microUSB port was flaky and required me to plug it in, rest it just right on my desk, then lay something on the connector to keep downward weight on it. The replacement had huge spots on the display, and eventually the touchscreen completely failed on that one.
I could go on and on, but I'm too tired right now. People can think whatever they want, accuse me of exaggerating or lying, but I'll just laugh - hysterically laugh - at the thought of anyone saying HTC has anything but mediocre quality.
I should also point out I've never dropped a device in my life - I'm fastidious, almost to an Adrian Monk-like degree, and pamper my devices. There was NO reason for them to fail the way they did, other than poor QC on HTC's part.
I'd still buy an HTC device though because of the hacker friendliness, but anyone who thinks they're a particularly high quality company is crazy.

The widgets I use make Android too practical to switch from.
There is no way you can say with a straight face that the EVO has a higher build quality than the iPhone.
'Never had any problems' seems to be incredibly highly subjective on the forums.

I have owned two HTC phones. My Hero was used for a year, no hardware issues what-so-ever (sold it in perfect condition for almost what I paid for it). My wife and I got Evo's at Christmas. Her iphone 3g had three returns because of hardware failures. The Evo's on the other hand have been great and neither of use use a protective case. I am fairly particular and take good care of my gadgets.

My Apache and Mogul and tp2 were all good solid phones. Whoever is nom nom noming apples balls so hard on build quality, remember that the iPhone are a sealed deal, non removable battery. The only thing that comes close is the Eco and Droid x. Eitherway there is no reason a company couldn't make a non serviceable Android loaded phone with identical build quality. Fact OS only Apple is retarded / brilliant enough to seal a phones components.

Motomaker Quality Control Issues

First off let me say I love this phone, I really do but Motomaker has been leaving me a little sad.
So I started off by getting a 16gb model straight from AT&T since I'm not a patient person but after a bit I wanted 32gb so I sold the 16 and made one off contract on Motomaker.
The first Motomaker phone I got had scratches and dents on the screen bezel and it also looked like it had issues with the fusing as some of the plastic seemed to have gotten well into the screen.
I got a replacement and their advanced RMA was great and incredibly fast, however, the second one I got has a different issue. The power button on the new one doesn't seem to be seated right and sits lower than my previous two as well as being harder to press and not giving good tactile feedback..
Looks like I'm going to have to RMA again once I get the money back on my credit card.
Moto X you are amazing but something with the quality control is a bit lacking.
I had similar issues with my first phone. The power button was seated the same way you described, making it very difficult to actually use. The volume rocker was the exact opposite though, the whole button wobbled within the phone's frame, making it feel cheap. I requested a RMA saying that I wanted to swap colors, and only changed my accent color. The buttons on this phone are much more firm/usable.
I hope whatever issues there are down in Texas can get resolved soon. I really like this phone and Motorola to succeed but QA problems will give it a bad rep.
They didn't seem to care when I told them the damage I think if you bother calling they will change it.
i hope they get it right. mine came in with no issues. so they are capable of getting it right the fist time lol. i totally agree that they have issues though, my brother's veizon pre-order led is not near as flush as the one on my phone.
The Rogers ones I've seen (assembled in China) including mine are all flawless.
The one I got (no customization, Verizon) *works* fine but on the front-facing camera, I've noticed the felt ring is not seated correctly and creeping over the lens a little. Although I doubt Moto would give me an rma, it seems like a manufacturing defect.

I have a t mobile one and noticed it has a small scrape on the bottom back and a few plastic molding issues.
I am actually returning it now since I noticed there's eBay sellers selling black and white xt1058 models that are unbranded for significantly less. Made in China units but I figure I'll save $120 over an american unit and be fine with it. I'm in refarmed area so I don't care about the aws hspa and the non att xt1058 can have unlocked boot loader / no bloatware. Maybe the Chinese have better quality
At least, each time you replace a moto maker device you get a $10 play store credit (unless they fixed that loop hole) and supposedly the return process is easy and if you can float the $650 hold you can get it replaced without any down time.

QA problems? Unfortunately good chance it's because of the union workers down there. While majority are excellent, there are many with "I don't give a crap, union has my back no matter how crappy my work is" attitude.

I know what you guys mean with the manufacturing issues. My rear camera literally has a little piece of Texas in it. I noticed when I pulled it out of the box that the lens had a little speck of tan on it. However it won't wipe off, and closer inspection revealed it was on the other side of the lens!
Doesn't seem to affect the pictures at all though, so I doubt I'll get it replaced over that. But I'm sure gonna bring it up if I ever try! :fingers-crossed:

I noticed when I pulled it out of the box that the lens had a little speck of tan on it. However it won't wipe off, and closer inspection revealed it was on the other side of the lens!
Doesn't seem to affect the pictures at all though, so I doubt I'll get it replaced over that. But I'm sure gonna bring it up if I ever try! :fingers-crossed:

Mine's not as bad as yours but I have a small speck at the bottom right of the circle. I'm willing to let it go since it's not noticeable except you look close enough and at the right angle under light.

So, my display is going out...:crying: It will intermittently flash on and off for no reason. The digitizer still works, even when I can't see anything I can still feel it vibrating in my hand. This also pretty much breaks Active Notifications. :crying: And Touchless Control..:crying: And twist-to-camera...:crying:
Needless to say, I have a new one coming from Verizon tomorrow. And I definitely told them about the speck in my camera too. The lady at Verizon had the nerve to ask me if I had a memory card for my phone. I told her that unfortunately the designers at Motorola had taken that option away from me. I hope they at least send me some screen protectors or something for my trouble......because I thought I was doing a good thing supporting the workers in Texas.
UPDATE
My display went the rest of the way out last night. This resulted in a useless paperweight that vibrated occasionally. The worst part of it, is that I couldn't use Motorola Migrate to get my old info! Because the screen wouldn't come on, I couldn't see the QR code to start the wifi transfer. HOWEVER, after much anguish and profanity, I managed to get Moto Migrate to connect WITHOUT THE QR CODE!! I couldn't find this method listed in any literature, but it worked for me, and my non-displaying screen.
1) The old Moto X must have the NFC on! That is the key to this. Thankfully, I had NFC on prior to my screen breaking, so I didn't have to blindly try and toggle it on. Also turn it on for the new Moto X
2) If you're like me, and your screen won't work, then you can't see the Migrate app. Thankfully, you can just use Touchless Control to open it. "Okay, Google Now. Open Migrate" Give it 15 seconds and it should be open.
3) In my case, I had to tell my new phone to accept Migrations, and tell the old phone to send them. Settings in the top right corner, and then a toggle button in the middle of the screen. (I just used my new Moto X to judge the rough placement on my broken one, and it was easy)
4) Finally, touch the backs of the phone together, and tap the screen on the NEW Moto X to use Android Beam which pairs the phones and begins Migration of old info!
Note: I got the pairing backwards the first time, and sent settings from my new phone to my old one. This didn't appear to hurt anything, but that's why I specify you make the new Moto X the receiver.
Sorry for the HUGE update guys, but this is important information. It saved my ass, to mention an enormous headache. So I hope that anybody else trying to pair Motorola Migrate with a broken screen finds this post!! :good:

New tablet after Pixel C?

After 2 years and 1 month my Pixel C got the split screen and black screen issue and seems to have died. I spent an hour on Google chat seeing if they could resolve the issue but they wiped their hands and said get a local repairer to fix it. The problem is no local repairer's are able to fix it as Google don't make it anymore, so they don't have the parts! I need a new tablet. I don't want to go down the Apple route if possible. Does anyone have a recommendations for cheap, powerful rootable tablets 10 inch in size? I was thinking about the Huawei Mediapad M5, but after Google's announcement yesterday I am not so sure. Any idea's?
At this point, Samsung is basically the last bastion of powerful Android tablets. I don't think they have unlockable bootloaders but I'm not 100% on that. The tab s4 has a SD 835 and the s5e has a SD 670. Both have similar cpu performance to the tegra X1, though the GPU will be worse on both. That said, they both can be had for around 400-600$ depending on spec. Tablet size I believe is the same, but the screen is bigger and oled. More RAM and more storage by default. I wish there were more options, because I too was looking at the mediapad m5 until the other day. Now I'm looking at either one of these Samsung tablets, or just picking up a used pixel c. Hope that helps a little.
If you don't want a Samsung tablet (I can't stand Samsung) then you might be better off just buying a used Pixel C off of eBay. They are going for between $150 and $200. I think you are going to have trouble finding a better deal than that.
There are some interesting tablets out of China using iPad and Microsoft Surface screens. They are cheap and you need to be careful about finding one that has a community of supporters. TechTablets maintains a list of recommended tablets that have been reviewed. You have to understand that you are not getting something of the quality of a Pixel C or iPad. That being said, you get a ton of bang for your buck. Especially if there are community-based ROMs available for them. https://techtablets.com/recommended-chinese-tablets-brands/
You also might want to check out the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus if you want something that is getting active development on XDA developers. It uses a 16:10 screen which is kind of a balls aspect ratio for a tablet in my opinion but it has decent guts and can be had for $285-$300 on AliExpress. I just got its 8" little brother, the Mi Pad 4. The MIUI OS that it comes with is not horrible but it's a lot better once you install an AOSP ROM on it like Havoc OS.
Thanks for your input. I have decided to get the Huawei tablet, so we'll see what happens. Oddly since Google told me to do one and I was unable to get it fixed by only local suppliers I found a video on youtube showing the problem and a possible (maybe temporary) fix.
It involved lifting the top of the screen from the back and adjusting the display ribbon cable. I tried it, but couldn't do it and cracked the screen in the process (hairline).
The day after Google emailed and said they were assessing my chat with them and asked if there was any liquid damage to the tablet and to send them 4 pictures of each side of the tablet (front, back and both sides).
Why do you think they want to do that, and if they were going to give me a refurbished tablet do you think they still will if I explain my story with a link to the youtube video? Cheers for any replies in advance.

I did. I sent them the pictures of my device and explained to them how I got the crack, which I got when trying to follow this video:

They said as it has physical damage they would not do anything. Even though I explained the damage was done trying to fix the device as they or no-one else would. They didn't even offer to look at it, as the problem is the ribbon cable for the screen, and me trying to open the device up will not have affected what was the issue in the first place. Google's customer service is abysmal. Apple would not treat its customers this way IMO.

A year ago I tried to fix my Pixel C's stuck power button and cracked the screen badly. I told Google what happened and they sent me a new Pixel C. I didn't purchase a protection plan and it was more than a year old... I don't get it. ?

Neither do I. Not even a cursory offer to look at it and then say it was my fault. It's like they're saying 'we dont' make tablets any more so if you have any problems then tough ****'. I now have the Huawei Mediapad M5 and as nice a tablet as it is it's not quite the same
I am keeping an eye out for a new tablet but I am pretty picky about it so I might have to wait. I essentially would like the Pixel C again* but faster and with more Android appropriate hardware (think GPS, haptic feedback, better touch screen, cameras that don't entirely suck in every way possible). Either same size with larger screen (smaller bezels) or a bit larger overall would be good too. The new Samsung tablet with the SD855 is something I'll look at. The rumored Nvidia tablet also will merit a look. But for now I will save my money.
*This to me means a decent keyboard accessory, mostly stock/Google Android, open bootloader, and higher quality components.
I've been debating what to upgrade to for awhile now. Then I noticed on eBay there was a seller who is unloading a batch of near new Pixel C 32gb. I sniped an auction at the end and got one for $122.00 US. The tablet is almost new and running fine. For the price, I am going to stay with the Pixel C for a bit longer.
If this is an option for you guys check out eBay. It prolonging the inevitable, but the price is right.
I also hope that mine will run forever. I have it now for about three and a half years and it's still going strong. If mine goes down, I think about getting another one before I try any Samsung tablet. I can't stand anz of the current models, to be honest.
What about Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus? It has Snapdragon 660 and I saw a price of $225.
