I just rooted my phone and was curious what others use. What's the best ad blocking app out there?
I use AdAway

I prefer AdFree. http://adfree.odiousapps.com/
I also suggest adaway.
https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway
adaway for me however some apps got smarter and not all ads are being blocked
AdAway easily.
I don't have this device (yet), but I'll throw in. AdAway, supplemented with AFWall+. It is a GUI front-end to iptables, which allows you to set per-app access to the network. I only allow apps that actually need network access through the firewall.
Not much gets past that, and it has the nice side-effect of dramatically reducing both battery usage as well as network usage.
+1 for Adaway

Use the Xposed module, YouTube AdAway.
I tried using Xposed module for my phone but it does not recognize the moto X pure 2015.
Adfree works great

You have to get the one for android 5.1. It works. I just did it.
No talk of the MinMinGuard Xposed module for app-specific blocking (sans Chrome and presumably YouTube)? I'm still window shopping so I'd like to hear more impressions.

Can anyone recommend a working adblocker for rooted phones? I am looking for one that also blocks ad's in games, my daughter has a habit of clicking them . I installed Adaway but it seems to error out when trying to apply the new hosts file.
Try Adfree. I don't think that any of them are perfect, but see how it works for you.
I prefer AdAway

I love adfree. The only thing it doesn't block are the video ads that come up between games in apps like hungry shark.

I found one thing I don't like on Adaway. It requires reboot for it to take effect every time after update. The ROM (by Beans) I installed for Note 2 before had the ad remover pre-installed and worked flawlessly.

It may depend on the app, but at least with the Chrome browser, I can just force close it and reopen it and the changes take effect. Hope this helps!
Thanks everyone, I will try the modified adaway and adfree =)
I use AdAway on f-droid.

I use Adaway and it works great but when I find an app I really like I buy the paid version to support the developer.
I use Adaway for the intrusive ads in Chrome.
If u want to get rid of ads in apps, use xposed module minminguard
Does anybody know if ad guard is allowed after updates to sprint PB5. Is ahybody running it on new updates?
I use adaway

I run ad guard on the latest version with no issues. I'm a paid ad guard user and I have the life time subscription. I love it man

I'm asking because I always used adaway on my rooted note 4. When I updated to marshmallow the old version of adaway I had been using for years wouldn't run. I tried adguard and it blocked that too. I'm not rooting my edge so the adaway that works on rooted marshmallow is useless. I don't want to update and be agreivated by ads.
Mine works fine

Mine works fine. Although google blocked SSL filtering with user certificates for apps outside of the browser which sucks.
Is this a unicorn? Can I block ads while on mobile data and/or WiFi?
Adaway?
Adblock plus?
Something else?

Blokada is the app I use. Both are open source and no root solutions.
If you have root, try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.mx17.overridedns

AdGuard is what I've been using for years now. Paid for lifetime licenses for 2 devices. No root needed.

I get ads in free apps, while on cellular but I don't on wifi with adaway.
AdClear does, but you have to install the package from their website. It also blocks in App ads.

I use this to block adds
https://f-droid.org/packages/org.blokada.alarm/
Does a good job blocking adds for me.
I use moaab (mother of all ad blockers). I'm not sure about over Wi-Fi since I don't use Wi-Fi often, but I think it might work on it.

MoaaB works on both... It uses the hosts file which is system wide and even in apps that call home...
If you want white space removed... Blokada does this... But... AdGuard does it better...

It depends on what you want. If you want to block ads on websites, install Firefox Mobile, and then install the uBlock Origin extension. It will block most ads on web pages, no matter if you are on wifi or cellular.
I know there is energized and ad away but I still get games with ads. is there an app that patches the apps to removed ads?

AdGuard or some other VPN filtering ad blocker.
Install Xposed and use minmin guard. Very few ads inside app are not blocked using this. And yes there are apps that can patch ads out but the only one I know about your not supposed to talk about on here.

Yes using edxposed you will pass safety net. I use it just for minmin Guard and gravity box. Haven't found any other modules that add much usefulness but those two are amazing.
