While this is an older tablet now, we have started a thread over at google forums and I am using this one as a back up encase they decide to lock the one over there..

Just a followup on this, if you come across this thread we have been getting plenty of people signed in to a public spreadsheet on this matter and are in direct contact with Google. At this moment we are waiting on a response on a possible outcome.. lets see what they offer.

Yellow tint problem, and how we try to get Google's attention...
Hi my name is Eric and to recap Dave's work, I have started to register all the people with a yellowing Nexus 10...
Here is what I have done sofar:
I have send an email to Google today with the following:
We have a group of people here at this forum: [see Dave's post] All with the same problem. The screen of their Google Nexus 10 turning yellow after one or more years of use. These where not cheap tablets. People that believed in the Google product and are not accepting this product defect. we think it should be addressed by Google. Who brought this tablet in good faith, that the good money we paid for it would be going towards a product that was up top the job and had reasonable usage and or at least had screen replacements available so that they could be replaced at responsible cost, but Samsung has not made any available and its up to GOOGLE hardware division to force this issue so that "customer service" is adhered to. I have made a Google form [see Dave's post] and spreadsheet to have people at this forum register their Nexus 10 build number: [see Dave's post] Google please use this opportunity to be legendary! Please get back to us with a solution. Thank you.
I hope to hear from them soon...
For all of you that have not had the chance to fill in the form. Do it now please: [see Dave's post]

Then after a while I got an answer...
OKAY Folks,
Today I received the following email from Curtis:
Hi Eric,
My name is Curtis and thank you for contacting Google Support.
I've reviewed your account carefully and have come to understand that your Nexus 10's screen has turned yellow? I understand your concern and I'd like to do everything I can to assist.
Based on this email you are writing in from I haven't seen any other cases where you reached out for assistance. Please try these steps to assess the situation.
Adjust brightness settings to test if your screen discoloration is within an acceptable range: 1. Go to Settings > Display > Brightness. 2. Slide the brightness indicator to 1/3 of full brightness. If the discoloration is not visible at 1/3 or greater brightness, your device is within an acceptable color range. Please be aware that a small amount of color variance is normal. If the screen still has a noticeable off-color tint even after increasing brightness, please let me know.
I look forward to your response.
If you have any more questions, please reply to this email. We're happy to help!
Thanks
Curtis
The Google Support Team
I withheld his email address, as a courtesy, so you guys are not going to flood him with obscenities...
Of course I will follow up on this. NO it is not a simple discoloration and definitely not within our [and probably his neither] acceptable margins.
I will keep you all posted...
Please, if you haven't done so yet. fill in the form that you can find in one of my other post within this forum. Thanks for your support.

So I have send him my answer:
Good day to you all... here my reply to Curtis from Google:
Hello Curtis,
Thank you so much for getting back to me [us]. I really appreciate this.
I did as you asked and to make sure that you see I am not giving you just my story, I photographed the screen with my Sony Cybershot DSC RX100 which is a very good expensive camera.
The room was lighted with fluorescent light, de office desk was a neutral grey and the paper at the corner was white with black letters. The foam in the back is pink.
One photo is the brightness setting; 1/3 brightness and there you see that the background of the screen is dimmed to show that you are working on the brightness setting.
The second shot is taken immediately after with Google Docs new page open to show it should be a clean white page but you can clearly see the yellowish, brownish haze at the edges... the center is a bit less affected.
I have seen many more pictures from the other forum members... All have basically the same brownish hue and clearly what we all, and I believe even you would find a not acceptable "light coloration".
We are all presently pretty disgruntled that we paid for a top of the line, at that moment the only super high resolution screen tablet. Now at this moment we could not even try to sell it as a second hand machine. I love the Nexus 10 and use it a lot. It does everything I want and would consider to buy another one or maybe even the latest Google Pixel C Tablet, if I was not so disappointed with the discoloration and Googles service.
We are all very curious how you or better said Google is going to help us with this problem.
Google has a great chance to shine here... Happy customers will get Google a lot more marketing value, that some advertising could not give. Tesla, another big great producer of beautiful machines knows this to well.
We are not just naggers about a little flaw but a major one. Please help us unconditionally which for Google might be just a drop in the ocean, but could be a stream of loud praise from this forum.
I thank you sincerely for giving us at least the attention we so desperately seek,
With kind regards,
Eric L. Criens
Now I guess we wait what will be their reply in this matter...

And I continued:
At this moment I am in contact with Google, please be patient. They are working on it although the outcome is still unclear.
Please keep your tone civil. We can clearly state that we are thus far disappointed with Google but it will not help at all if we start YELLING, threatening or being uncivilized.
If I see or read anybody not being able to be civil about this matter, I for a starter WILL NOT assist you in this case.
If you haven't done so yet please continue filling my form: [see Dave's post]
Make sure you have the correct serial number which you can find in the about Tablet section. Please read the help text in the form.
Thank you for your patience.

But then after a couple of more emails from my side it started to get quiet...:
Hello people...
Just an update of nothing really... I am getting seriously worried and have send another email to my contact at Google [see below].
I don't give up hope yet... maybe they are looking into the problem and have to contact Samsung for the matter as well. But normally I am used to getting regular updates. Now it has been silence since the last message I received on the 10th of October.
Thank you for your patience. I'll keep you posted although there is only so much I can do...
------------------- message to Google -----------------------------
Dear Curtis,
I am getting worried... Even when I had a problem ticket running with Google with Google Apps for Work as an official GAfW reseller we would always receive an answer, or kept up to date in intervals that Google was still working on the issue. Now I haven't heard from you/Google for over 3 weeks.
This is not becoming a company like Google and I hope to receive an answer or update soon, as to know the status of where (or the group) stands concerning the yellowing of the screen of my(our) Google Nexus 10.
Awaiting your or Google answer, I remain,
With kind regards,

I will continue and hope on Google's fair reason to at least continue to keep in touch with me to get somewhere to a solution or at least some kind of resolve.

Similar issue
I had a similar issue but it went away after I flashed a different ROM. It seemed like a color calibration issue but from the pics I don't think mine was that bad
Hi long suffering Nexus 10 users..
Just popped a note off to business insider to see if they are keen to run a story on this problem for us..
I suggest others do the same..
Google are hoping this just goes away..
but my main gripe is that if we had brought a Samsung tablet at the same time we would have got a replacement screen to play with..
As this is a OEM for Google via Samsung.. we a hung out to dry..
Anyway..
here it is.. lets see if we can get a few of the tech bloggers to write up about this..
"Hi guys,
Just a story idea and a jab at Google and Samsung, Two of the biggest names in the tablet game.
The first batch of Nexus 10's where OEM'd by Samsung for Google, as it turns out Samsung has stitched up Google on these devices via a low grade glue that has brought on a yellow tint that basically renders these tablets unusable for reading on white background. (a Large part of using tablets).
Anyway, we have a group going for some sort of support for these tablets.. as compared to say the asus TF101's or TF300T's and even Samsung Tablets of the same age.. this doesn't seem to be a problem.
Our problem is, Samsung is not supporting this defect.. Google doesn't want to know about it and its the a classic case of throwing the dedicated customer under a bus.
We are making a noise for some sort of deal with google as there should have been more screens made at least for replacements, but that's the problem.. Samsung is all hands off this.. and has not or will not product any to fix this problem. Just about every other tablet you can get replacement screens but for this one.. the first generation Nexus 10's not a screen to be seen anywhere..
Now I am guessing that by the way our thread has gone and others that have been locked.. Google is hoping this just goes away.. I guess the "do no evil" policy doesn't extend to customer support.
anyway, would be great if you guys ran a little piece on it.. might make the two companies come to the party and at least work on some sort of fix for us..
Here is some more details and threads on the subject.. have a read and see if its worth a bit of a new story.. if you need high res photos we can supply.. also I can put you in contact with a few from the group if you need a few quotes.. myself included..
A true story of how the big companies feel they can get away with not supporting what they put in to the market place.. if these where cheap tablets.. wont be a problem.. but most of us paid top dollars for them and it hurts to know that you place trust in google but they will just turn their backs on you..
Leave it with you.. hope you take it on board and at least generate a fine story from this..
Best regards"

Mine is doing it too now. I've owned it for over 2 years. Not a happy guy.
I have the same problem. I bought my Nexus 10 on January 2013. Two years later, perhaps some months more, I got the yellow tint covering 75% of the screen.*
I called Google local support in Spain. I had no warranty (here we have *two years). They answered me that I should get in touch with the Samsung Service... 400 euros! and this is answer I received.
Thank you all for your efforts.
I'm having the same problem sinds a mounth now.
Let's hope Google or Samsung reach out and help us.
OK guys. Same issue here
Other than filling google sheet, what are the next steps? Who's leading on this. This is quite frustrating...
Its a waste of time..Google is not going to do anything and Samsung is a lost cause..
Key here is to remember not to buy any joint production products from the majors..
Sad.
But true
Google.got dicked on this one..so they are dicking their customers that brought the device..
I just did a replacement on a S5 that had a yellow banding on the screen after 13 months .. Samsung did the full replacement no drama.. shame they wont do a screen for the N10 they screwed up on
Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
It is so infuriating that almost all of the problem products are from nearly the same batch (LMY4--). It is very clearly a batch issue, and there aren't that many users affected. It wouldn't kill them to admit that there was an error in this small number of units and replace/repair them.
Are there any more options we haven't explored of bugging Google or Samsung? What about the Sales of Goods Act 1979?
I just picked up the N10 from my parents which replaced it with a cheap no-name tablet a few weeks ago. The N10 also has the yellow tint.

(why is there no omnia 7 forum?)
I've just been told by t-mobile that the Omnia 7 has QC issues and their deliveries yesterday were returned to their suppliers, anyone know what these might be?
I just picked one up today from Orange!.. I wonder if mine is affected
I heard from vodafone store that their delivery of LG Optimus (Win7) came in and had to be recalled immediately without sale due to a bluetooth issue.
The build quality of the Omnia is one of the things that worries me after reports like this and the issues with the Galaxy series.
Evilanglic, since you now have your hands on one, what are your impressions of the device? Does it seem solid?
Much more solid than I was expecting. I thought it would feel like a light plastic shell like the Samsung Galaxy S.
It really is very nice, no creaks, just a solid slab of deep black technology! Good times.
The back is actually wrapped in metal to the edge of the screen on the sides, it is only the top and bottom of the device which are solid plastic sort-of-cap/ends of the device.
You definitely can't call it a unibody (or can you?..) but as I say... sort of mostly 'wrapped' in a sheet of metal.
It was a close call between the (SAMOLED) Omnia and the (very nice crisp LCD) HTC Mozart, the latter fits the hand better of course due to size, but in the end the slick all black face of the Omnia, adorned with its high contrast SAMOLED screen, just made it worth it despite the low actual PPI!
It would have been nice if the rockers and camera buttons where more metallic or... metal, but instead they are old school black plastic. They work well nonetheless.
The home button is also not the most premium of push switches (compared to iPhone of course) but it is nice to have a soild key!
I would urge you to get both of these devices side by side in the store if you can, but be careful because it took me at least 20 minutes to tell the man which one I wanted to take out lol...
Here are a few pics of the construction as links:
I'm jealous. I have about 2 weeks before WP7 comes out in the US. That and you guys got the better selection of phones (minus Micro SD expansion). I am definitely getting the Focus though. Best choice out of the options available in my opinion.

Yeah. I wont touch a single Samsung phone after the trouble the Vibrant gave my stepmom. It's not fun trying to give tech support to someone 1500 miles away, over the phone with the issues, to a lady with no clue about technology.
EDIT: It reminded me of the time I had to help someone with Windows ME. They didn't know where the "desktop" was! As you can imagine, that was a loooooong phone call.

I've owned a few samsungs in the past (years ago lol), and they didn't give me any trouble. I suppose it was before the major smartphone race of the the last few years though haha.
I only went for the Omnia after holding it myself, there was no way I was going to order a Samsung phone without getting into a store and exploring it - but it was more solid than expected.
Hopefully if there are any support problems in the future, I will just take it to the high street store I got it from and play super dumb and demand a replacement or different phone lol... no harm done.
It seems like a negative thing to say but keep in mind that the phone really is good right now, no problems at all, everything works perfectly so far.
Note for those not in the know: the location based issues of Android Samsungs are not present here! On maps it focuses down with GSM triangulation and GPS pinpoint kicks in a couple of seconds later, super speedy!
Well that's a relief. I suppose the biggest factor that makes it feel so much better is that it's got some metal, right?
Mine's just arrived.
First impressions are very good. It feels very sturdy with no creaks and the metal casing is nice. It feels much more solid than my HTC Blackstone, although I am worried about such a large screen getting damaged!
It's going to have to stay off whilst the sim card registers. Annoying wait ahead!

I was reading conflicting reviews on the Mozart's camera and since I mainly use my mobile for web browsing the extra screen acres sold it for me.
The screen quality is awsome by the way. The device also looks way better in the flesh. It seems it may also have Cornings gorilla glass which would be a welcome addition!

For web browsing I might have thought it possibly more comfortable to use the Mozart's SLCD with RGB pixels (higher subpixel count) if you have good eyes that is lol.
I just cant get over how amazing the 4" SAMOLED looks though...
Because of the all black screen surround, and the nature of the WP7 text laid out to the edge of the screen, it sort of looks like your phone is just one massive display, which a lot of it is... lol
The blacks of the SAMOLED just merge with the black surround! So cool.
Where does the screen end?! lol

I am a happy omnia 7 owner. Just like what the other said, solid construction, beautiful screen.
But the build in app is sub-par (vs lg optimus) and I hope I don't regret choosing a device with 8GB of storage.
Cheers
A user over on MoDaCo forums is reporting that their T-Mobile account manager has told them that the Omnia 7 has been temporarily pulled due to software issues.
I've been waiting on one of these for some time as well, and was told today that their most recent update for handset stocks (issued internally today) did not include a new batch of Omnia 7s. The CSR I spoke to wouldn't be drawn on any specific problems with the handset, except to say that "there have been a few issues" with the ones we've received, and that I would be receiving a call in due course to let me know when mine would be delivered.
Does anyone else know anything about this?
gcaw - apparently they have dispatched Omnia 7's now on T-mobile, so I'd get on the phone ASAP.
risq - many thanks for letting me know about that. As it happens, fifteen hours after I'd made my previous post, I received a call from T-Mobile to let me know that they had stock and confirming delivery later today, but I'm grateful that you informed me of that - and hopefully others will have taken note of that information and successfully placed orders themselves.
I was also pleased to hear from the CSR (the same one I spoke to yesterday) that T-Mobile is extending the same deal to new Omnia 7 owners as it offers to Android buyers, giving 3GB of monthly data usage at no additional cost, rather than the standard 1GB offered under the fair usage policy for other handsets.
Compared with the rather pitiful 500MB offered on O2's contracts, that's a pretty awesome deal.
QC seems top notch!
Posted this on another forum. I'm happy about the build:
Well it had to happen sooner or later, in under a week I've dropped the Omnia 7 while lazily trying to hit snooze just moments ago (typing this message with my phone now lol). Dropped from about table height, and while it was dark, sounded like it landed on a corner first... Picked it up in the dark and dropped it again, this time hitting face flat on the ground.. My floors got a wood finish on top of a normal concrete slab so its pretty solid. Shocked and not feeling so lazy anymore, turned lights on, inspected phone, and absolutely no scratches to be seen...i think this is due to the matte looking polycarbonate plastic they use, plus the color looking like its been amalgamated with the actual plastic, I say this because I remember on my htc touch HD the bezel would scratch/chip so easily because all it was was some cheap paint over plastic/metal? As for glass, i read it's gorilla glass, whether or not it is, I'm glad it isn't scratched... My screen protector can't come soon enough,
Either way, I'm glad to know the Omnia7 is a solid beast . Though in truth, after dropping it, my excitement and feelings of it being a new toy has slightly washed off... My feeling now is 'it might be damaged somewhere'
I am doing a little self promotion here but no advertising involved!
Having owned a Galaxy S GT-I9000 for several months now I have picked up a Nexus S and wish to try my hand at a review. For now I have three days of use and opinions up on the site and an in depth compare with audio quality recordings as well as video and picture comparisons coming in the next few days.
The intention is to give a more UK / EU focused look since we have the GT-I9000 Galaxy S here where most of the reviews are looking at variations in the US such as the Captivate.
Please do feel free to make comments, or ask questions on the site, here, or at http://twitter.com/nailerr as I want this to be useful to anyone who is thinking of shelling out for a Nexus S!

Thanks, all!
Nice, I was thinking about doing this until I saw your post. I just got the nexus S tonite and I must say I am pretty impressed with it so far. Especially the auto restore of the market apps. I am in pretty much the same scenario as you, I got mom to buy the phone in US and I am in Asia, so returning it is pretty much not an option.
A little peeved at a few things tho, how did you get around these?
01. Got the same back button problem.. but not too concerned about it
02. Tried to play pocket legends, and it hanged the phone in about 5 mins.. as in no force close just hang.. had to do a take out battery and restart
03. Where is the video player in this thing? do not see it in the apps, installed rock player.. hating the ads, but wanting to see if there is any better options before committing to the big price they are asking for
04. got the screen protector from best buy and it is so much fail that it is not funny Hoping that there will be better options pretty soon.
However all in all, I am still quite happy with it just small stuff.. which I guess I had when the i9000 came out too
Nice review, let us know if you have any more thoughts in a few more days.

The video player is part of the Gallery app, if you have videos on the external storage it will show up there. I use mVideoPlayer, it's free and I'm quite happy with it although it doesn't have MKV support.
About the Back button at first I though I had the same problem with my unit. But then I realized that the issue was happening only when I used my left hand to hold the phone and my left thumb to touch the back button. I started paying attention to this and I finally noticed that I wasn't touching the actual button, but the 'dead' area on the side of it. See the picture below:

When I thought the button was unresponsive I was actually touching the area in red, but the sensitive area is the highlighted in blue. This is probably due to my previous device being a Milestone which had the back button very close to the corner. Maybe you guys are doing the same thing or maybe I'm the only one dumb enough to do this and my unit is not defective hahaha.
edit: oh, and I'm on the same ship of you guys. I can't return the device and I'm afraid I have the screen issue when the brightness is set to low and the gray tones get all weird. I'm used to it though lol

Thankyou so much for that! I was starting to worry about my back button not working properly, and I really don't want to have to pay to get it shipped back for repairs, then shipped over here again. I will see if this helps me!
No reason not to voice an opinion! We are some of those who took an expensive plunge outside the retail regions and may find useful things for other people. So your questions in order:
01. I will possibly exchange mine when next in the UK, as suggested below it might be a bit off but I have spent an hour or so just testing the button with different fingers and pressure since I know my index finger tip is less conductive than the flat. Tough skin! I think it is a widespread defect but a defect nonetheless.
02. I have had one total lockup so far, sounds exactly the same. It was not in a game that I recall and honestly did not note what did it since it was just the once but given you had it happen in a game and Gingerbread is so new it would not be entirely unreasonable to put it down to some OpenGL hangup. The Hummingbird in the Nexus S has one of the faster GPU's on the market and also some media extensions called NEON, combine this with some new UI hardware acceleration with the GPU and... Well these things seem likely to happen.
03. As nicholasbgr said the Gallery is the video player. Android stock is very basic. Something I need to mention actually is that the Galaxy S is a very capable media machine out the box.
04. I had a Zagg InvisibleShield for my Motorola Milestone before finding out it was Gorilla Glass. Super, super tough. A little hard to apply since it does not simple glue on but very much worth looking into. They claim a lifetime warranty on your device if something scratches through the film.
Thanks for the reply too, I will check back to the other replies in a bit but I have to run from the computer for now!

A really stupid story, and I am sure not that uncommon either. Was in the college cubicle this morning (adult college, English ex-pat learning Finnish) and some bright spark had set the automatic lights at something like 2-3 minutes. Cue darkness and yours truly having the bright idea (no joke intended) of grabbing my phone and using my bright-as-the-sun SAMOLED+ screen to regain composure in pitch darkness and reactivate the lights.
I accidentally dropped the phone from knee height (please, imagination not necessary) onto the tiled floor leaving me with a dim partial screen lightup and many many problems, especially as I use my phone heavily to help with my language course. AAAAAAGGG.
Well, this is definitely going to be a lesson to anyone who doesn't think it will happen to them (one more educated user down, many to go) and haven't invested in a bumper case or at least a silicone cover. The only recourse I am aware of is the screens from aliexpress.com which both cost approximately a 1/4 of what the phone is worth....unless anybody has any better sources they can share?
Before I debase myself further, I have to mention that I am a 35-yr old who moved country with his family and is currently on a government-sponsored language integration course, and is therefore on the equivalent of unemployment-level finances until at least August 2012 with books to buy and all that depressing stuff. My phone is my only real luxury at the moment (cry cry, etc) and has become a lifeline helping me improve my language skills to become employable again in a very skill-oriented country. In that respect it is more than worth its (albeit svelte) weight in gold to me.
Despite me not being an existing contributor here as such, not having accrued reputation and therefore not being seen as an investment, I plan to provide a screen replacement tutorial (laced with comments like "BUY A BUMPER CASE!") when I can afford to buy a new screen. In that respect, I have set up a "Donate To Me" button to the left in my profile chit:
<<<<<<<<<<
....which I hope people would be goodly enough to use anonymously to help ease my transition through my S2 limbo. Please understand that this is not invitation to deride me for my stupidity in not buying a case yet (practical lesson learnt already, believe me) or to comment on the validity of my request in what is to me a very troubling time.
I'll be ordering the new screen at the end of the week. This is the first picture of the intended tutorial:

In addition, if you live in Satakunta and need guitars/basses set up and/or repaired then I can do this for a very reasonable fee. I will also have plenty of woodland mushrooms for sale. I make a mean curry. I know far too much about Matsumoku-era Japanese Aria guitars. I can still remember most of my Sinclair Spectrum machine code. I helped to prove from geotechnical data that there is a continuous layer of impermeable clay below the Stratford Olympic Village site preventing migration of contaminants buried beneath the multi-million pound development thereon from leaching into sensitive waterways. I can calculate weight bearing and design roof trusses for lots and lots of snow. I ran 10km in a very slow 59m 52s once. I came second in an egg and spoon race when I was four. I invented one of the first network instant messaging systems in 1991 using BBC BASIC and various network hacks. I then implemented it in Winword. I know far too much about brasses. I have three points on my driving licence that I should have had removed seven years ago. I can't ice skate. If any of these skills or lack of are capitalisable to you, drop me a PM....!! Callers are standing by.
Gutted!!!
Do you not use some sort of case?
I use a great rubber one that in VERY close to the phone so doesn't even look like i use one!
Looks good and would save my phone if i ever dropped it
Ouch...
Many sympathies. And good luck learning Finnish, it's horribly tough. I gave up and learnerd Swedish instead from my Finnish ex - helluva lot easier.
@OneZeoN - I've never actually used a case before, and it is only recently (well, July 2010) when I bought my first large format screen phone. Before then They were semi-bricks like my Nokia 5800 Xpress Music which you'd need to stab with an icepick to damage. My original Galaxy S never failed either. I've always been very careful (or lucky).
I guess I fell for the svelte design and feather weight of the S2. It's a shame that form is taking more precedence over function in some kind of counter-productive race on thinnest-flattest-lightest-shiniest, as the walls of material physics are being hit hard. Shock-absorbancy doesn't marry well with thin and stiff as my S2 proves.
I'm going over whether to run a silicone skin or a proper bumper case. Given that every Euro counts at the moment (upcoming school books and my wife needs a nurse uniform "for school", woof) I'm a little worried that silicone might not provide the protection and assurance an expensive phone like an S2 really needs. As you say, more than likely better than no protection!
@B3311 - Finnish is unfeasibly hard. That said, it is very logical like German is. You can read Finnish straight from the page and even if you don't know the words or the sense of what you are reading, everything can be vocalised. The grammar is the problem, cramming that system into your head and then realising you haven't had time to absorb any vocab so you have nothing useful to say. I keep telling myself that two years of intensive language courses will pay off for the rest of my life. Swedish is easy, yes.
Does it affect the way your screen renders things or is it only on the gorilla glass?
My friend dropped his belt buckle on his LG Optimus 2X and cracked his gorilla glass but it still turns on and renders without problems. He sent it back to LG and got a replacement (only the glass) for $5 + $10 service fee.
Or maybe this can help?
Thanks for the link. My glass is immaculate and the crack is in the screen component mounted beneath the glass itself.
More than a little polishing required here!
<edit: apologies for the bad photo. snap decision and not set up fully hence the reflection!>
If you find a source for the bits, I would be pleased to hear about it.
My buddy's son did the same thing, but the display underneath is OK, but the glass is cracked. He now has my spare gel case, but needs to find a new glass.
Someone else, with an iPhone 4, told me his agent charged £180 to replace the glass when he did it.
The screen, glass and bezel seem to comprise one unit. I haven't taken my S2 apart any further than the rear plastic cover and bezel as I only really want to try this once I get around to replacing the screen for real. It seems it will be a "full body transplant" of all components and boards from the old damaged (well, killed) screen straight across to the new unit.

Most of this evening will be spent looking for sources. Amazon and "Ali Express" seem like the most likely sources, however I haven't even found suggestions here really. Has nobody broken their S2 yet, unlike me?
I'm marginally concerned about ordering from a random Chinese site, however since it likely won't come from anywhere else what can I do? X'D
Oh, and despite my apparent light-hearted posting I am still depressed. Levity in the face of gravity and all that.

I sympathise with the OP. I cracked the glass to the left of the home screen button, it shattered in an area 6 x 10 mm and propogated from the bottom left hand corner, with 4 long cracks running into the main screen area. Fortunatly for me the it still works and the long cracks are very fine and not too distracting.
It was in my pocket when it happen and i don't recall bashing into anything. I assume it was a glancing blow from the handle of a cupboard door which matches the hight where my phone would sit in my pocket. When I first pull it out I thought I had my friends phone (HTC Touch HD2 since he has cracks from where it fell from his bike) gutted when I realised what had occurred.
I have looked up service centres in the uk and was sent to CPW in Bristol, spoke to "the Tech Guy" they quote £150, 2 days lead on the part (incidental anecdote: and their engineer isnt in because he has a bad back. The guy told me had had a similar crack in his sgs2.) Have found others offering fitting for £125 but would much prefer the recommendation of a stranger on a website i lurk in . I have put a cheap screen protector on top so not to loose further glass.
anyway good luck.
Small donation sent. Good luck.
Thank you! I really appreciate it and the other donations made so far. I calculate that I am about 2-3% of the way there already. I think I remember where my anti-static wrist strap is also! I just need to locate a SAMOLED+ screen replacement.
I believe I will need to inspect the screen assembly when it arrives, as this may not involve a "full body" transplant and might just require the Gorilla glass debonding from the bezel rather than a full disassemble. I'm not sure which of these I actually prefer however...
@s1lvf1sh - those propogating cracks must be a complete nightmare as any pressure will surely apply stress along them! I don't know whether the glass can be replaced on its own as it seems to be that it is bonded to the SAMOLED itself. Perhaps this goes some way as to explaining the high cost of glass replacement services? I hope to see Samsung using flexible AMOLEDs in the next couple of years, as they appear to be all but immune to convential damage.
....and unconvential damage....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8S8tbQMp2k
Pulled the trigger on a new SAMOLED screen from a UK reseller for a reasonable price. Should arrive next week, so unless I get some good time during the day that week I will be documenting the replacement process next Saturday and uploading the same or the next day or thereabouts.
Thanks to everybody that made donations. Found out yesterday that my next language book will cost me €49(£42) which is a serious dent in our general finances alongside this new screen and my intended bumper case. Any supplementary donations are always welcome of course! :-D
Whilst I am on-topic; if any steps of the transplant process need documenting in specific detail, it would be a good time to discuss those now I guess.
I'm no expert here..... but on my O2 mini I had many a year ago I had the screen go garbled like that after i dropped it. Now I understand that this phone is a amoled where my O2 was an lcd but I found the problem with the O2 was the flat cable connection for the screen to the motherboard....
Just a thought and doubt your problem is the same but you have to pull the phone apart anyway so worth a check.

It's unlikely that I am the first person with a broken S2 LCD/LED given the number of them up for sale out there. In that respect any fatal design flaws should have been reported by now, so I doubt it will be a similar problem however I never rule anything out until I have appropriate evidence so I will definitely examine the damaged screen and trace the source of the crack back through to the initial shock transmission point in the (relatively) inelastic case.
In other news, I am heavily tempted to buy an aluminium Taurus case.
don't buy the story. My SG2 fell down 3times. One time even from more than 2.5 meters hight. No impact on any function so far.
sorry, but wish you good luck anyway. May God give you power to manage your life with honour.
Story? It's far from being a story at this end of the Internet! I'm stuck with "using" a GT-S3370E whilst I've been rejigging money to cover this repair and have discovered the downside of syncing all your contacts with your Google account....when you move backwards to an older phone that can't do that, you find that you have no numbers on your phone. Bleh.
Good luck with dropping your phone "successfully". Most people just don't get second chances you know? Just happy that I'm living my life honourably under my own steam thanks.
PS. A big Saturday handshake to the last donation received! Makes me feel a hell of a lot less "out in the cold" from my little disaster.
PPS. Missing Android.

No scratches in mine. I suppose that just makes it worse, that I wrote off a pristine Gorilla Glass screen by cracking the LED underneath. I hated the scratch in my original S. 3mm right down in the middle, two-thirds down. Grr.
Considering a Zonus leather wallet case instead of a bumper. Not a fan of the portrait ones though. A little too Star Trek communicator for my liking....reminds me of Ace Ventura too....
Got my notepro wifi yesterday and i noticed (while watching a movie during the evening) that there is some backlight bleeding.
- Bleeding is almost non existing during the day (with TL light above my head)
- Most is coming from the bottom
I like to know if this is going to be something common or a reason to get my tablet replaced.
Could be i'm too picky but for spending 750 euro's i only want the best
ps in the evening i'll make some pictures to be linked in this post
This is my biggest worry with tablets like this. Spent tons of money, and you get little light bleeds that become very annoying.
I went through a dozen Note 10.1 tablets, and best buy hated me for it, trying to get one that didnt have light bleed. Only to accidentally leave it on the roof of the car one day and have it slide across the interstate on ramp median. Came back and foundit still functioning but had to snap the case back together in some spots and it now had massive light bleed.
The concern of needing to return a tablet for light bleed is the sole reason I am not ordering online. I am going into a store to buy a device. So I can return it immediately.
I will say that it doesnt bother me if it is just how its supposed to be. The note 8.0 tablets all had light bleed on them, and it never really got ot me, because I knew it was no better on any other note 8.0 .
I've contacted the store where i bought it and they said i can exchange the tablet for a new one.
Tonight i'm going to inspect it further and see if it's really going to bother me.
If so, i'm getting it replaced by a new one which hopefully doesn't have the light bleeding.
A friend and I recently bought identical 2014 note 10.1 tablets and they both had a very small amount of light bleed, mostly along the bottom. I've also had lots of tablets over the years and its quite common.
I'm willing to live with it if its barely noticeable. But any more and it goes back, including the notepro I'm waiting for.

The bottom looks like pretty "normal" minor backlight bleed, or at least fairly common enough. The top portion might just be from the angle and actually appears to be IPS glow, which is perfectly normal for that type of display.
If it shifts when you move, it's IPS glow, and is normal. If it's always there, light bleed. Just a matter of how bad it is and how much it bothers you.
And also don't forget... if you're looking for a problem, you'll probably find one. Watch videos with normal brightness in your normal viewing environments. If it looks good there, I wouldn't worry about it. :good:

So it'll probably be the same for all devices.

Yes Frys has them in my area...I picked one up from them locally on 2/13 as soon as they opened their doors. I was looking at their site last night and the store pickup was still unavailable, which would indicate to a person searching for one that they aren't available in-store. If you plan to pickup one from frys, I would definitely call first to verify availability in your area.
Side note...I would have purchased from Best Buy(reward points), but when I called the day before release, 2/12/14, the employee told me they wouldn't start selling them until Friday 2/14/14. After I purchased from frys on 2/13, I found out they were indeed selling them in store Thursday. I was misinformed AGAIN by best buys finest. Oh well, their lost frys gain, don't know why I took her word on face value because I know how misinformed best buy employees can be.

That's looks about the same amounts of light bleed that I have on mine. I went thought this when I had my OG ASUS Transformer. I went back and exchanged it for anther one and got even more light bleed.
If you look on the web for light bleed is quite common and even the Apple iPads all have a small degree of light bleed on them.
If it really bothers you I would go back to best buy and make them open the box in front of you and test them out before you leave. That's the only way to make sure you got one you like.
As one of the other posters mentioned if you keep looking at it and stressing about it you will notice it more. I would try to ignore it and give it a couple of more days to see if it truly bothers you.

Exactly...
When users go out of their way to create use cases that have almost zero similarities to every day use just to find a problem, they're going to find a problem. The picture looks pretty normal for a tablet. And how often do you sit in total darkness with a lit up black screen on your tablet? As long as there isn't light bleed from between where the plastic and glass meet I'm pretty sure you're good.
Some light bleed here, but not enough for me to exchange it.

I've noticed light bleed just like the above picture. But i only notice it on the bottom. It really doesn't bother me. I am having an issue with strange video glitches. It started when i was trying to watch a video on the bloomberg app and then padgram. I get vertical lines on the screen and then it turns black. I press the back button a couple of times to exit and then everything is normal. I did a reset just to be sure everything was fine but it happened to me again this morning while using the scrapbook. Has anyone experienced this?
Haven't had any glitches like that, but only got mine yesterday.

here is an example of it. I think I have a defective unit.
I'm getting a note 12.2 today, (well very strongly considering it) after having to replace my 10.1 twice now for a screen problem. I use the spen extensively for college and I Flippin love it. I'm finding the 10.1 a little small for a true paper replacement so the 12.2 is looking pretty nice, being almost the size of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
However I'm reading that as far as screen real estate goes, it's just scaled up from the 10.1 screen and offers no additional real estate. What are your opinions / experiences with this? I know the physically larger screen size will give me more writing room, but a higher dpi would be nice too. I love these tablets, the spen is great and incredibly useful. I'm hoping the 12.2 will make it that much better.

I had the same complaint regarding DPI. Was disappointed everything was simply scaled up for the bigger screen. You'll have to root to change the DPI althought in theory if you write the same size it really shouldn't matter for your purpose.

Yes, plenty of people have changed the DPI. I did it with ROM toolbox as my root explorer kept crashing when I asked R/W on the system drive (I am rooted). I first used 270 then settled on 280. Does not effect performance...
Well just got the 12.2. So far I like it a lot better than the 10.1. A lot snappier and the size is awesome lol.

I went with a build.prop edit to change lcd density globally at first and then had to switch back. NextIssue application was wonking out on me at any non-stock lcd density. The app would work fine but display of magazine pages would have large black stripes in them. What I do now is simply use app settings (xposed module) to do changes of dpi per application.
I'd say that if one changes global dpi they just need to be aware that if they see peculiar graphics behavior in an application then they may need to revert to stock density and verify it's not the dpi change that's causing it.
Probably the easier way if one doesn't want to go in per app for everything is to do a global change and then use per-app to revert particular uncooperative apps back to stock density.
So before i could even get a case for this thing , the screen is already broken. Less than 24 hours later lol. Was sitting on my couch, we have tile And hardwood flooring. Slipped of my lap and landed face down. I knew it was broken before it even picked it up. Kinda makes you sick to see a ~$1000 item broken like that. I'm using it to type this... but damn.. lol. Case is due to be delivered to tomrorrow.
Here's the thing that gets me though. I bought it at Frys electronics, I was told I had 15 Days to buy the extended warrenty. Turns out I dont. Not that it matters since they don't cover accidental damage. So I decide to get a hold of Samsung and buy their warrenty. I've had dells and HP's in the past and have usually purchased the total protection plans for cases like this. Nope.... Samsung doesn't offer an extended warrenty if you did not buy it directly from them. Even if they did give extended warranties on items not purchased on Samsung.com, they don't offer any accidental damage. ...
Am I the only one who thinks this is rediculous? I'm carrying around a 12 in sheet of glass , of course it's going to get broken, and there are no options for me to protect your investment?
Finally found square trade, 159 bucks for 3 years for accidental damage protection, hardware failure, etc. That's 50% less than Frys wanted for 2 years of just extended warranty. I bought a Dell laptop a few weeks ago, was about to buy the Dell total protection plan.. which is 300 bucks for 3 years. Square trade does it for 180 bucks for 3 years...
Ya.. I'll be using square trade from now on.
I've included a picture to make you cringe

I am sick on buying this one as I am very happy with my note10.1 2012.
And your story IS CREEPY. A nightmare.
Feel sorry for your loss
Well, i use to buy my insurance from accidents in external private insurance companies. It's about $50 for 2 years (as for $750 expensive N10.1/2012 at the time of its purchase, central european country), and they give you a new device or full price back if not available, even when broken accidentaly (well, once, insurers agent told me that I should BREAK my device myself in a time near insurance's end, so in the worst scenario i'll get completely new device and in the better one, i'll get whole price in cash, so I can buy myself a completely new - and more modern ofc - device).
Well, the second case is if you would arrive to insurers BEFORE your shocking accident as you were blazing fast.
Btw as you saw the accident happening live, do you feel that its the tablet that is so easy to damage, and it gives you an impression of easy-breakable, or was it a damage that can be described as adequate to the impact? Or just bad luck, which always can happen by hitting in a critical point?
And... Hope u get it fixed as cheap, as well and as quick as possible.
Extended warranty is not insurance and trying to buy something to cover your tablet after you broke it is just wrong and technically insurance fraud. Don't be so careless with a $1000 item!

I have ZERO patience for the "morality police". Give me a freaking break...the guy was using the tablet in his lap and it inadvertently fell to the ground and shattered. You may be the high and mighty one who would just take it in stride, but 9 out of 10 people (whether it is technically right or not) would do what this guy did. Your persecution of him is laughable.
That is the reason I have a home insurance that covers errors I make myself. If I ever break my laptop, tablet or design lamp by accidentally, the insurance helps me to cover some expenses.
But... dropping that tablet to the floor from 50 cm or so and the screen looks like after the war, it makes me wonder the build quality - especially the screen quality. The screen, however, looks like it got hit to the two certain areas. The floor isn't "flat" or the tablet felt on something on the floor, that was causing high pressure to the screen (a point load).

Ah, whatever... Your a tool just like this guy! Careless and think you should be able to scam the system when you screw up. You are clear example of what is wrong with society! The fact that you say "weather it is technically right or not" just goes to show your low life standards. There simply is no questions of where it is right or not. The question is weather you have any integrity or not. Clearly you don't...

In my opinion, the problem with society is the overall lack of education. Go read what you wrote! That's worse than my 3rd grader's grammar correction assignment I helped him with last week.
I didn't say "weather it is", I said "WHETHER it is"! Also, there simply "ARE" no questions, not "is". Oh, one more thing, if you are going to insult someone, do it correctly...that's why YOU'RE the tool in this instance. I know that last one went over your head, ask someone to help you if you wish. Regards, my friend.
Call me out on Grammer and typing skills cause I'm typing on a tablet and auto correction is kicking in if that I'd what makes you feel superior. I'd certainly rather have Grammer/typing issues then be a low life scum bag.
Please take it to PM guys.

Buying insurance after the item had been broken might be considered a fraud - if you give the insurer not a true statement about the device state at the moment of signing the insurance agreement... BUT - there is no insurer which will agree in signing such an agreement without seeing the device itself. Even if someone would be so silly - he still has to write down the serial/IMEI/whatsoever of the device, so he must have a real physical contact with it. I think that discussing if it's moral or not is pointless, then.
My advice was more likely pointed at what can be done to avoid such an accidents in a future. It is obvious that in situation which happened in a discussed situation there is NO legal way to obtain a free repair/replacement...

How is it possible for a company like sqauretrade to physically hold/touch the device when you can purchase the agreement online?

I don't know, I don't even know what squaretrade is. I was talking about external insurance companies, not connected with the store which sold the device.
