Question In summary:
Has anyone swapped their Verizon motherboard to a sprint model or vise versa and got it to work?
In detail:
Ok so, got my Verizon note 4 wet few weeks back. Didn't realize how wet it got and started it back up too soon, worked fine for about 5 min and then the screen shorted out. After completely drying it still boots, still freaks out from all the messages etc pooring in from it being off, was also able to access from my computer to pull off data.
I was able to locate a mint condition sprint version for a reasonable price, my theory is that I can simply swap my mobo from the old phone to the new sprint one and be good to go. I tore it apart last night and soaked it in rubbing alcohol to clean off any remaining deposits,I'm trying to source a sonic cleaner to do a better job if possible.
Any reason this won't work? Any possibility I could damage the good screen with a bad mobo from the Verizon? Anything else you can think of that I haven't addressed? I suppose I could sell the sprint version and fund an actual Verizon replacement from the sale but if this will work...
bump, looks like i might be the guinea pig...

Why not just get the Sprint phone, unlock it, and just use it on Verizon????
You'll be buying a mint condition phone anyway. Why tear it apart when you can use it on Verizon if unlocked?

I was under the impression that sprint and Verizon run different tech for their networks. If they don't, or if the phone has the hardware to use either, then yes, I'd much prefer to unlock it and go that route. If anyone can confirm that'd be great. I had done a bit of googling on that earlier but everything I found basically said they were not compatible.

Ok, I just researched it and found 2 things:
1) Verizon won't activate any device not bought from Verizon. (According to a forum)
2) Sprint and Verizon use different IMEI types, so one carrier's phone won't work on the other's network.
So I guess you can't actually just use the new phone.
This now brings up the question of how swapping the mobo will affect the IMEI. If using a Sprint mobo will make the phone now have a Sprint IMEI, then you won't be able to get the fixed phone to register on the Verizon network. And, Verizon may not register the device anyway.

google it, the power of the world wide web is at your finger tips
Just call Sprint and get a new one.
Tell them you know there is a one year warranty from HTC and this is not normal wear and tear, you've never dropped it or mistreated it at all.. they should overnight ups you a new phone. That's what they did for me.
Or, turn your mobile network to evdo only and then you won't be able to get calls or texts. The Sprint store will give you a new phone for free.

I think sprint was fully aware of the paint chipping issue.
Oddly my wife dropped hers behind the bed and it put a huge scrtach down the the key pad - Sprint said they where aware of the issue when she called to see if she could get it fixed. Shipped her a new one no questions asked. I was amazed.
The one in the link Chococrazy posted isn't google branded, it would almost be worth 70 just to get rid of that. I feel like such a tool when I see that Google logo.
My Hero was obtained through craigslist, but I am a Sprint post-paid customer. Do you think I'd have any luck complaining about abnormal wear and tear on my phone?

Waranty typically only applies to the original purchaser. I doubt they would do anything for you if the phone wasn't originally purcahsed by you.
while were on this topic lets say i wanted to put the gsm hero case on my cdma hero what are the logistics involved in doing this. i am guessing its not possible based on key placement but if it were possible that would open up the world of accesories that are available only to the gsm phones. plus i kinda like the chin.

GSM phones are typically quite a bit slimmer than CDMA phones. I do not think the sprint phone would fit inside a GSM casing.

If ANY reps at my store exchanged for this reason I would be shocked. Keep in mind, some of us work there because we LIKE the tech side of things and aren't totally clueless.
If you're going to be doing any exchanging, make a Nandroid, copy it to your computer, RUU, and destroy all evidence of have rooting it. If it's rooted when you turn it in, they'll tell you the warranty is void. Copy the nandroid to your PC so you can restore it on your new phone and have all your settings and apps.

well when u RUU the phone you're completely wiping everything off, right?.like brand new/stock..you'd just have to keep the sd card or reformat it?.....or does RUU no completely turn it back to stock?
i may be totally wrong, but i have never been able to transfer a nandroid backup from one phone to another. i believe they are phone specific.
i believe u gotta change the name of the folder/backup.to the new phone's series of numbers..like "CBDMRS12....."...somethin like that i think.

i was able to do this. nandroid will create a new directory which is named using the phone's unique serial number, but you can copy over the backup from a different phone and just put it in the current phone's nandroid folder. been running my phone like this since I got the replacement phone on 12/1.
I rename all of my backups to what they were (Fresh, Modaco, Gumbo etc) As long as I drop them back in the serial number folder, and there is no white space in the name, they work no problem.
Funny thing. I searched google and was brought here, which in turn someone said to search google, which I tried again and was brought here, which in turn someone said to search google, which I tried again and was brought here, which in turn someone said to search google, which I tried again and was brought here, which in turn someone said to search google, which I tried again and was brought here, which in turn someone said to search google....
And then I finally gave up...

Not to mention the trackball and button placement is different.
A friend of mine is buying a G2 off of craigslist soon and I just wanted to know if there were some things they should look out for. What's the most common thing that breaks/malfunctions/etc in G2s? And is there an easy way to tell if the phone is rooted?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Be weary about the ESN...If the seller is legit then he should have no issue meeting to sell it at a Verizon store, or sprint ...(whichever network its on)
To check for root, attempt to boot the phone into custom recovery....if you can, that's a sure sign its rooted...
Thanks For the Info
what is ESN?
Electronic serial number....so you know the phone isn't stolen...
You'll want to bring along some earphones -- pug it in and listen to music or the radio to make sure that the connector is not broken.
Also check the USB connector -- plug it in and make sure it charges. Make sure you have connectivity with a laptop or netbook. If your laptop has WIFI it should automatically download the drivers it needs. Put the G2 into Disk Drive mode and make sure you can see the files on the desktop.
Also, If possible, I'd check and make sure the SIM card bay and SDCard slots are working. Put in a SIM card and see fi you get a network (of course if the device is still locked then this won't work)
Put in an SDcard if one is not included and make sure you can read and write to it.
(not that the G2/Desire Z has any particular issues with these, but these are common points of failure with any phone that has seen some abuse)
Make sure its not a dummy phone or a box full of paper. Craig's list doesn't have any checks or balances to it.

GSM phones don't have a esn lol cdma phones do. Put your sim card into the asap and make a test call as well as testing the browser, bring a car charger as well. I bought mine off Craigslist and its flawless other than the battery door had 2 small scratches. I buy all my phones from Craigslist

Also, make sure the hinges are as strong as you would like them to be. I know people here have returned G2's because of the hinges being so loose.

forget about stolen phones, the us gsm carriers won't block phones, only sim cards.
use wifi, bt, and your sim card in the phone.
use every button
use every port.
boot to recovery and make sure everything works there.
I've not been burned on cl yet, because I vdont buy before I try.
hey i am selling one if you want to tell him
Hello I have a HTC G2 and i lost it a few days ago so i reported it to tmobile and they sent me a new one
Now after receiving the new one My friend cleaning out his car found the phone and called me letting me know
My question is can i use this phone still even though i have a new one
is there a way to mod the phone so that TM will not know its the one i reported lost.
Please let me know as i will like to give this to my daughter thanks.
I'm guessing they would have the ESN/IMEI of the phone marked as bad so it cannot be used or activated anymore by a thief if it was stolen. There may be a way to get it work, but it would probably be illegal =/
what will be the procedure as if its a sim card how would they now what phone it is
Well, the most honest thing to do would be to call TMobile and ask which one they want back.
A less honest thing to do would be to call 611 from the old phone, which will probably work, say you found this phone and would like to know where to send it. At least you get to keep the newer phone.
Or, you could keep both and see if the old one is usable using a different SIM. But what kind of example does that set for your daughter?

Well I understand sending the phone back will be good but as i spent 150 dollars to get the replacement. I was told it will not be refunded so whats the point of sending it back.
I figure since i have a few tm phones and at times i switch phones it will not be a problem.
Well if putting custom software will that hide the phone as they say rooting the phone is not exceptable and you can void your warrenty. And when putting custom roms they never now also apps that are downloaded.

The ESN/IMEI are hard coded in a very deep level of the phone software somehow I think, so it doesn't matter what SIM you have in it; the network knows its being used. I'm sure there are [illegal] ways to change the ESN
For example if you look at phone people sell on Ebay, they are always labeled as "Clean ESN" or "Bad ESN". The bad ones are phones reported as stolen, etc and won't be able to be activated no matter what.

This is correct. If you've reported the phone lost/stolen, or the phone is associated to a delinquent or unpaid account, the provider (T-mo) will mark the phone as such, and the phone will not work with any other SIM card. So its only worth what it could be sold for for parts...
You spoke of rooting the phone, this won't clear the ESN, and this really isn't something we talk about at XDA (or most other reputable forums, for that matter) because it is highly illegal/frowned upon/etc.. Really no need for this thread to go in that direction...
Now the right thing to do would to call T-mo and ask which one they wanted back... maybe you can work something out with them even though they cant do a full refund. It would also mean that your account wouldnt be docked the cost or mark of having been given a phone under warranty, because most plans only allow a certain number of claims per time period.
Not true...you could change the esn and imei on blackberry. I did it because I was in the same situation. I just wanted to give mine to my bro. I'm sure if you could on blackberry you can with android. Android is more open I would think

Never said you can't, just said its something we don't talk about here.
It should still work on networks outside of the USA (or which ever country it is you're in). So I suppose you can unlock and debrand it and sell it to someone abroad.
Have you tried putting your replacement sim on the old phone? You really should call tmobile to see what can be done.

It will work just fine. I did the same thing and I asked the lady that worked for the phone's insurance before I ordered my replacement what would happen if I found it and she said you have 7 days to send back the replacement for a refund. She said if I find it after the 7 days it would work and be 100% usable but I wouldn't be able to send in the replacement for the refund... it is currently being used with no issues right now actually.

Hi everyone! I have a bit of a dilemma.
I bought two AT&T S4's from a seller on eBay. One for my Mom, and one for me. Now, the listing says that the phones are guaranteed to have a clean ESN and IMEI, are activation ready, and all that good stuff! So I get the phones yesterday and check both IMEI numbers and they check out. I went a step further to see if I could get them unlocked, because hey, why not? No dice. One phone's service contract hasn't been completed, and the other phone's Next payment plan hasn't been paid off. So I'm sitting here like . . . . okay, so will they both eventually get blacklisted? I sent the seller an e-mail about it. I could care less about unlocking the phone, but I do care about having the IMEI blacklisted some day out of the blue and not being able to use the phone, but that's another story for another day.
If the seller gives me some push back and things don't work out, I was thinking about switching the motherboard's out. I know another i337 motherboard would work just fine, but what about an M919 motherboard. Are they interchangeable? Just wanted to know! Thanks

Looking at both of them, I don't see any differences that should prevent it from working. The only thing I'm aware of that prevents some mobo's from working is the frame on the screen and the screen's cable. The connection for the cable is in different places and the frames differ slightly so they don't fit other mobo's (learned that when i had to fix my screen) but the I337 and M919 screens appear to be the same. Beyond just fitting in there and connecting, dunno.

Thank you both for responding! This info is good to know I'll probably end up getting the M919 mother board if need be
Ok. Here's the situation. I own 2 V20s (buy one get one at launch).
One was never used. The other is my primary daily driver phone. Well... I dropped it and the screen is dead, but the motherboard is in perfect condition and still works.
Here's my question, can I simply just take my daily driver motherboard and swap it into my secondary V20 that was never used? Basically put my everyday motherboard into the phone casing from the never used V20? Will there be any complications (ESN, camera, force closes, etc)?
And if that's not possible, can a direct nand backup be flashed over without complication?
I ask this because I have done numerous hours of custom development for my own personal use that I REFUSE to loose.
Thank you so much to whomever can answer and help me.
EDIT
The casing on the daily phone was also slightly damaged, hence why I'm trying to do a full swap and not just the LCD.
PREMATURE BUMP
From the teardown videos I've watched, it appears that the radio/modem and motherboard are all one piece. So that will eliminate the ESN issues. Anything else that I should worry about?
I'm confused by the numerous hours of development statement in the same post as can I swap identical mother boards or do a NAND backup from one device to a identical device. Not trying or meaning to be rude just think about your post.....
The serial number will be the only difference regardless.
Personal choice. NAND backup then restore to the other device, unless you are 100% sure there is nothing wrong with the current motherboard, in which hot swap.
I'm assuming they are identical since it was BOGO as you stated. Don't know any place that would offer that and say give you a H918 V20 with a LS 997 V20.
I did same thing. I cracked my main screen on T-Mobile variant. I bought a bootlooped V10 on eBay that was Verizon. All parts in good condition, just a dead phone. Took them both apart and placed the tmobile motherboard into the verzon model. All went easy as pie. Only negative is that the one I picked up has lousy image retention. But otherwise perfect condition screen cosmetically.
Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk
I think you will be fine but i recommend swapping over as many parts as possible to the new V20 or just take the screen off the new V20 and swap it with the cracked one. That's the safest option imo.
Thanks guys. Much appreciated. I know some phones don't like MoBo swaps unless you swap almost all the other parts also (S4 anyone?).
@DarkestSpawn Only reason I suggested the MoBo is because I was not sure if a NAND backup between phones would actually work correctly, considering different serial numbers. Never had attempted that before. Also, I do not have access to a PC right now. So the NAND backup would take some time. Trying for no downtime, hence the MoBo idea.

Believe it or not, my local verizon wireless had an amazing offer going on. They paid all termination fees and gave two free phones if you had good credit and switch service that day (one day flash sale), so I swapped service and got a Pixel XL instead. Unlimited photo storage ftw. :highfive:
