Hello XDA, I'm curious if there is a way in either the standard ROM (Which would be Sprint to use with Ting) or a custom ROM to be able to turn off the WiFi and lock it to make it kid friendly? Ting allows data control from their end so it's no problem there, just curious if there is a way to put a PIN on the ability to turn WiFi on and off. Thanks!
AppLocker?

How about locking the Settings app by AppLocker or similar apps after forgetting the WiFi network in the phone?

That could be an option, thanks! I'd like for them to still able to adjust settings on the phone but that seems like the only solution that makes sense so far. Other than just deleting the wifi driver itself.

Hi,
There's one thing that bothers me in every ROM out there and even on my own. I don't have an unlimited data plan and I hate the fact that I have pull my SIM card every time I want to try a new ROM. The problem is that if I don't, I'll be charged for access cause every ROM has the mobile connection enabled by default.
I can't find any setting anywhere in the ROM files to change this behavior... Maybe I overlooked? Does anyone if it can be done and how?

AFAIK you can just press menu when you're in setup and then choose to edit APN. Go to your APN and just put a random letter somewhere in the address to prevent it from working.
At least it's possible doing that using a vanilla ROM, not sure about sense
IIRC, during setup it asks if you want to connect through mobile network & wifi or wifi only. Just select Wifi only.

Exactly, "during setup" and not at startup. It always connects through before I can select "wifi only".

Indeed. The setting is initially set to Mobile Network & Wi-Fi, until you change it in the setup wizard or settings. It's really annoying for people with no data-plan.
You could remove the APN list from your ROM to prevent it. Also, there are a few XML files with default settings. If you are lucky, it contains the Data Connection settings, and you can change it.

Maybe for you and your country network operators. It's not about the data downloaded or the time it takes for me to disconnect it. As soon as it makes a connection, I'm charged a fee.
just hold the END button and chosse turn mobile network off?
Yeah, this is a problem for me. ROMs never used to do this so it wasn't a problem, but recent ROMs have started connecting as soon as I first turn them on, which costs me 99¢ each time.
(The pricing is: 99¢ per day for 50MB, and anything extra is charged per KB)
I've lost a couple of euro to this. It's not a big deal, but it's a pain alright.

It's not quick enough...
I recently bought a second hand htc hd2 from t-mobile, and unlocked it to work with at&t. Everything works great but I'm having an issue with data.
I don't have a data plan with at&t, hell I don't even have texting. It's just a phone. What I really want to do is use this phone the way I use my ipod touch.
Since everywhere I go has wifi, the only time I am without a connection to teh interwebz is when I'm driving so It's not really that important.
My problem is that everything I use on this phone looks for a data connection first/only, instead of just using the wifi that is available to me. It tells me "BLAH, you don't have a data network, BLAH."
Is there a way to disable the phone from looking for a data network WITHOUT turning off the phone aspect of the device? I really just want it to look for wifi whenever I goto a facebook app, or the windows marketplace... yadda yadda.
The only thing on this phone that looks for wifi only is the opera mobile browser.
hmmdo you have a custom rom if so just just turn of data connections and keep WiFi on
A custom rom. ANY custom rom will do? Or, is there one for this specific set of circumstances?

I use Nrg roms for my device, make sure you follow all the HSpl stuff before installing a custom Rom, if you have Nrg roms, go to comm manager, and turn of data connections
Awesome. I will try this. Stupid question, I won't have to re-unlock this phone after doing these roms will I?

Nope, but if your new to this, i would suggest you read the guides as you need to unlock the boot loader too, guys at the HD2 forum would gladly help you out
I use an HD2 on att with just wifi and pay per use data enabled for mms. I would highly suggest looking into using android on your HD2. I haven't had any issues with android apps requiring mobile network vs wifi network.
I don't have an unlimited data plan so I normally turn my 3G on and off manually when I need to. But today my 3G icon keeps coming up on the tab even when i have the settings as off. I checked my data usage from my carrier and it is indeed eating up data. I've tried restarting the phone but it's still the same.
Any idea of why this is happening and how to resolve this?
Thanks in Advance

try APNdroid, you can find it in the Market.

If you have your data disabled then it shouldn't be coming on. Check your permissions to see if you have an app on your phone that has permission to mess with your network settings.
Sent from my cm6.1 Aria using XDA App
APNDroid would work for your situation very well, however, I've had problems sending MMS's when I've had APNDroid installed (even with "enable MMS" checked).
Another option that would probably work very well is DroidWall (on the market-free). It's a firewall for your mobile data and WiFi, customizable for each allowing individual programs through. A widget on your homescreen turns it on or off. You could have it set so programs can always use WiFi, yet mobile data is blocked unless you turn the widget to "off". That wy no programs can actually transmit anything even if they have permissions set in the program. DroidWall has final say of what leaves.
I downloaded 3GWatchdog free, and was so impressed I purchased the Pro version for ~$2.50. The Pro version allows you to see specifically what program has used mobile data, and how much. That, along with DroidWall, will allow me to completely customize and control my mobile data while still retaining as much functionality as possible.
Ok Well I downloaded both APNDroid and Watchdog and now I can't even turn on 3G. I just uninstalled both of them and turn my phone off and on still no 3G.
Thanks anyway guys. I getting really close to giving up on Android and moving to the iphone. Every other day there's a new problem with this mobile OS and I always have to download an app rectify something that shouldn't be happening in the first place. It's getting ridiculous.

Did you turn your mobile data back on before uninstalling APNdroid? If not, you might want to look into that
No offense, but I dont think its Android that is the problem. Have you taken the time to fully understand the phone? I havent had a hitch since I got this phone. Once you reinstall APNdroid, enable your data, and then remove the app. If you would like to manually turn off your mobile data then do this menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>uncheck data enabled
If you dont want to go through the hassle of that, download an app to do it for you. Quick settings can do it. Open quick settings>menu>preference>statusbar shortcut *To access quick settings from status bar* Then hit back>menu>customize>move up mobile data(APN) from hidden settings. Then all you have to do is click on or off for mobile data.
You can also download various widgets that can do this for you without having to go into quick settings. APNdroid being one of them. I use Widgetsoid.
So is there an option to add a trusted wifi network for smart unlock?
I know I can add my house location, but I don't want to have gps turned on all the time and even so, it's not the most accurate in this regard. I'd rather just have my phone smart unlock when i'm connected to my home wifi.
I thought I saw it somewhere in the settings at one point but I can't find it now... thanks for the help!

Location mode>battery saving should do it.
There is no smartunlock via trusted wifi source, not yet at least. Its something I see a lot of people complaining about (myself included). The unlock by location is extremely unreliable, even when you set a ton of location points around your hour or work.
Having an option to purely remove lock based on which wifi network you're connected to would be amazing.
Once xposed hits you can do this with gravity box. Ravio said his first year version should be out this week. /crossesfingers
Only got my Nexus 6P (H1512) a couple days ago, I did hear that 6.0.1 corrected the smart lock bug for some people, however smart lock is still very unstable for me (fails at work, and at home, about once each per day). Smart unlock by wi-fi connection would be very welcome.

it's available now. you need to install xposed. once xposed set up, there's a couple modules that will do this for you. my fav at the moment is Gravity Box for Marshmallow.

add your home computer as a bluetooth trusted device
I wish I could add a tile as a trusted by device that's at home on my luggage. I just recently uninstalled xposed for Android pay. Forgot how annoying the trusted location was

They problem is the tile doesn't show up in Bluetooth devices, so I'm not sure how to make it work with anything besides it's own app.
I've been digging into this for a while and wanted to make sure I get this correct. Do I have to be rooted for me to use Tasker (or any other third party app) to auto unlock my phone when my phone connects to bluetooth (or whatever)?
I don't want to root my phone because of the issues I've seen people having but I would really like to find a way to auto unlock my phone.

Thanks but my issue is having the phone unlock (swipe) and get to the main screen when connected via bluetooth to my car. This will allow me to unlock my phone without having to enter a pin but it still doesn't actually unlock it.

So your expectation is that as soon your phone connects to your car (thru bluetooth), you screen wakes and shows you the home screen of your launcher? Rather bizarre...
Yes. Not really bizarre. It doesn't necessarily need to show me the home screen of my launcher. I really just need it to unlock my phone. I know many people use this because I've seen ways in Tasker and other 3rd party apps to do it, but you need to be rooted. So I was wondering if someone had a way to do this without being rooted.
What are you wanting to do once it is unlocked? That may be another way for us to look at the issue.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my first post. I want my HotSpot to turn on when my phone connects to Bluetooth in my car. I also want the HotSpot to turn off when my phone disconnects from bluetooth in my car.
Hmm...Try AutoInput. It's a 3rd-party plugin. It has an unlock function. Haven't tried it myself, but I think I will now that I've looked into this.

Yeah, I tried it but couldn't get it to work. I think I needed to be rooted for it to do what I wanted but I'll check again. Thanks for the suggestion.
