Buy and plug in, Format to NTSF, or EXFat, or Fat32? What's best for Android M coming up?

Use the phone to format it, rather than a computer. Then put it in a computer and report back which filesystem it used. My guess is FAT32.
Android M adoptable storage will reformat your card anyway

Back everything from the sd to a folder on your computer. I prefer using an sd adapter to plug the card directly into the pc. Transfers will be faster that way. Format the card in the pc. It needs to be formatted as fat32. I would use a cluster size of 32k. Copy any needed files back to the card and pop it back in the phone. Done.

I can't for the life of me get my Evo running CM7 to read my 16gb card. I formatted it in FAT32 and also partitioned it. I even copied all contents from my 4gb over to the 16gb and it's not even seeing it. What am I doing wrong??
Is your card being read when it is completely wiped (free of any content) ?
You can try formatting it in your phone. Are you sure the card is real?

When this happened to me I put my micro SD in a card reader formatted with windows to fat32 and then formatted again with phone and everything works well. Also Check your PM
My evo will -not- read cards formated on my computer. LOL, so i just format inside the phone and partition it with the recovery system.

That mostly happens if your Computer formats it in NTFS
Thanks for the help guys!
I was actually making a reply here and accidentally turned my computer off and totally forgot it.
Yes the card is real. I use it with a adapter and card reader on my computer. I have formatted it on my PC with FAT32 and also partitioned it since I had to.
It's not being read when fully wiped either.
I'll try what's stated above and report back. Thanks!!
Mine did this, and it was a dead card. I was able to put it in a card reader and get most of my data off. Most are lifetime warranty. Had to send mine in for a free replacement (Transcend 16GB card).

This worked!!! Thanks a bunch!!
on a side note you can also go into cm recovery and make sure data, sd card and there is another option ate mounted.. somehow mine were unmounted when i was flashing roms and the sd card was stuck on read only
So I have a 16gig SD Card that I partitioned using gParted, (I was in the process of trying to either dual-boot android ROM's or get a linux OS to boot), anyways it had been this way for awhile and no problems until yesterday. I started using boot manager and after it supposedly installed Evo-Fresh ROM (this would have been booting from SD) I rebooted and it froze so I had to hard reset.
Now I can't recognize this SD card on my phone, though my 2gig SD is fine. But when I connect via USB and mount the device my computer picks up only the FAT32 partition that I had setup, not the EXT4/SWAP extension. I know I need to reformat the entire SD Card, so my question is this.
Can I reformat the SD card somehow on my phone (via terminal, maybe?) or something along these lines so that my phone will read the 16gig SD Card again?
i think the free Paragon App will work with ext4.

elsewise, fire up gparted on your linux box and use that.
You could format it in amonra. It has a pretty good SD format utility.
Windows wont ever see the other partitions nativly

I can't get my SD card card to mount.
Do I have to format it coming from stock FW?

It needs to be in FAT32, so copy whatever is on it off it, and use EaseUS Partition Home free version to format it FAT32

Thanks!
I don't have a dedicated SD Card reader in my possession, but an old BlackBerry phone did the trick.
I had to format it FAT32 (Primary), logical didn't work.
I used a card reader on my desktop to backup my SD card then used my phone to format the card. Now my pc (w7) doesn't recognize the sd card and wants me to format it with Windows.
It's a 64 gb card that was formatted to ExFAT with the same pc but I wanted to make sure it wasn't gonna cause a battery drain so I formatted with the phone.
What does the phone format a 64gb card to? I thought it was going to be the same ExFat?
Any advice here or should I just use the usb cable to move stuff back over to the sd card while still inside the phone?
