Free 10GB Storage For XDA Users - G4 General

OPEN REGISTRATION CLOSED - NO MORE SIGN-UPS
I'm the owner of Spry Servers, LLC, a hosting company. I would like to offer a free 10GB cloud hosting account to any XDA/G4 user who wishes to take advantage of it. There is no catch. No Google spying. Just free. If you are a developer and would like additional space or ftp access, feel free to contact me directly via PM.
This is a semi-private beta offered to G4 XDA users. These are permanent accounts which will not be deleted after beta is over. Registration is open for a limited time. Feedback on the service is welcome and much appreciated. This will eventually be a paid service. Participants involved in the beta will never have to pay for their initial 10GB.
Here's a sign up link: https://cloud.spryservers.net/index.php/apps/registration

Yes, immediately after pressing the submit button.

I found the catch: some random guy gets my data. I'd much prefer to upload my stuff to Google where it disappears amongst the zetabyte of other users content. How do I know you don't misuse my data? What kind of security can you guarantee and document?

I couldn't care less if yahoo or Google sees my family photos and videos. That's why I use Flickr as unlimited cloud storage for pictures and YouTube as unlimited cloud storage for videos. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to upload the same stuff to some random guys cloud service. And obviously that's not common sense.
I wasn't asking because I considered this an option and I don't need to be told that I simply can not use the service, i'm well aware of my right not to use any available service..

Well, consider it a good practice. If you wouldn't store your sensitive data to any major, well knowed cloud service, why you should even consider uploading it to a random, unknow hosting service?
The guy is offering a storage service for free. Then it is up for the user to take it as is or reject it then not use the service. Why just criticize it based on 'they will steal my stuff'. Then by the premise that they will see/grab your data, why trust in ANY cloud service in the first place?

I can imagine data that's completely not interesting for Google and perfectly safe in google drive while a small cloud service could be interested in misusing it.
Im not gonna continue discussing this. I asked for more info about the company, op delivered it.

Seems to not let me finish creating my account. I click the verification link in the email and enter my email, desired username and password, and the page goes blank. I can then not log in so I assume the account was not created.
Nevermind, seems I just had to wait a while. Seems to be working now.
Thank you for this service.

It's widely known as "link din" - people willing to hand their address books to third parties causing spam to lots of mailing lists and forums.
I have no problems with it as a professional version of Facebook, but it's unfortunately as spammy as Facebook sending bogus invites to the world. I can only assume that installing their app will cause your entire Google address book to be spammed with invites.

I have not seen this at all... And I have been on linkedin for years. It has prompted many recruiters to call me and offer me positions. I like that then I dont have to go looking for work...
As to Spam, yes there are a lot of people on it that send you invites... but it is no different then any other social network. you could probably pull a lot of emails from XDA if you really wanted to.......
Anyway, I like linkedin even though I am not really looking for a job right now. each person has there own experience and if you dont like it then uninstall it or remove your account. also you could use a spare email account on it and all spam would go there. I think most people have a few email account. I used a junk email when I started with it.... Since I have not gotten too much from it I updated it with my personal good email that I always check.
Have a great weekend.

It only uploads them to a private folder.
The biggest thing right now for me is that you can't hide yourself on the service. Facebook has a way to completely hide your profile - on Google+, your name, profile picture, and gender must be there and searchable. A couple of my friends work with potentially violent, crazy people on a daily basis and definitely don't want to be publicly searchable on social networks, making Plus a nonstarter.
Can anyone spare an invite. Despite the many publisher accounts I have with Google I can't get myself an invite. Would sure appreciate it. Thanks guys!!

From what I understand, google+ requires a gmail account and becomes part of your gmail email, connected to that specific email forever.
As for the google+ app it's only available on android because it's still in testing. Probably in a few months they will release an app for the iPhone when google+ is out of testing (if Apple approves the app)

How To Get Amazon Apps Outside USA

This guide will tell you how to install the apps from amazon.com from your Android phone if you live outside the US. Now you can enjoy the Free App Of The Day from Amazon.com
Step 0: First go to www.amazon.com and click Sign In.
Step 1: Create a new Amazon account by selecting “No, I am a new customer”, and complete the registration wizard.
Step 2: Put US Address and Phone Number. Just enter any number starting with +1. Easier than that, you can just enter +1!
*Alternatively, you can generate random US address and phone number, etc. with www.fakenamegenerator.com
Step 3: Assign US address as account’s 1-click default address.
Step 4: Next, go to “Add a Credit or Debit Card” section. Paypal provides developers with sets of test credit card account numbers which can also be used in Amazon account. USE THIS CREDIT CARD NUMBER 378282246310005 (AMERICAN EXPRESS)
Step 5: Your Amazon account is now configured to get any free apps from Amazon AppStore
Step 6: Now you can download and install Amazon AppStore for Android. Run Amazon AppStore App and login with this new username/password. Now you can download all free apps from Amazon.
NOTE1: You will still not be able to purchase any paid apps (apps which are not free) with these test credit cards.
NOTE2: It is highly recommended to make a new user rather than using US address in preexisting usernames.
Note3: So, to buy an app...Purchase the app in the Appstore on the Amazon website or on your device - the initial payment will fail
Visit the Digital Orders Page page and you will see your pending purchases
Choose the option to retry the purchases, this time using your non-US card
The payments will complete and you will be able to download the apps on your device.

Tried this for some time and I finally got it! Ok for the address, I prefer to search it off the Web. Just search "random California address" on Google etc. The rest of the details, go to fakenamegenerator. Remember, when they ask for mobile number, it must be in this format "+1222333444". You must include the +1 for it to work

How to download apps outside the US

If you would like to download apps from the Amazon Market outside the US you need a Credit Card Number.
Paypal offers some CC-numbers for free: xxx.paypalobjects.com/en_US/vhelp/paypalmanager_help/credit_card_numbers.htm
use www instead of xxx!
Add one Number with an US-Adress to your Amazon Account and enjoy
This works also for the free app of the day!
I am using one of these "test credit card numbers" with my kindle fire in Austria and I can download free apps and the "free app of the day"!

did you change your address to USA?
Use hotspot shield to set up or log into your usa account.
Use US address and the previous links usa card info, make this card your default one click purchase.
It works.
Worked for me, too.
Just choosing one of my US previous delivery addresses as the billing address for one of the fake numbers of the first post, and setting this "new" card as the default for one-click did the trick for me.
Only thing that still doesn't work are the movies. I am a Prime subscriber and would *love* to use my free video library. I guess that requires a VPN, isn't it?
Best.
Felipe.
Worked for me!!!
Awesome Thanks a lot
Felipe, Yeah You need VPN...It won't work with US credit card & Address
I had seen this before but was scared off by warnings of Amazon zapping my account. Lack of those warnings here made me give it a go (totally illogical I know) and it worked perfectly.

Google Drive

Not really phone related, in a direct fashion, but oh well.
I've just opened my Google Drive account, and I'm seeing that we can create public links. Therefor, I will be transferring all of my files (actually, I'm transferring them as I type this) to Drive. All of my posts where I link files will be changed to Drive links. I would suggest that the developers do the same, if they can. 5gb free storage, and the ability to share directly with other drive members (Kind of a joint folder), seems pretty nice. I'm not sure if they will '509' traffic, a la dropbox, but I have sent a message to Drive asking about it.
Just food for thought for those who wish to consider it. I'll keep this post updated, as I use Drive with the pro/cons I've found for the program, as I go.

Essentially if you aren't doing anything wrong, you don't have to worry about it.
Yeah, like I said heard rumors through posts about it, haven't actually read the tos myself since at this time not thinking of signing on, satisfied for time being with box and dropbox.

Box is the first cloud storage service I've used and it's great. I couldn't pass up 50GB for free. I wonder what Drive can do that Box can't?

Only thing I know is only get 5gb free on Drive, might be useful to use and have everything in more or less one place.

I feel like Google Drive is going to be useful once app developers start taking advantage of the API. Give game apps permission to access drive, upload your saved game data so it isn't lost. Same with other apps. Upload and backup important data to your drive account so you can access anywhere if needed, and restore it to another phone.
I shall be deleting dropbox...

New Google Drive infographic
Just found an infographic online discussing the impact Google Drive will have in the generic file sharing space. Box may have been around longer, but Google's vertical integration could be a huge draw factor. To view the infographic see Firmex's blog => firmex.com/blog
