Custom boot image - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Verizon s5 on NE9 (4.4.2), and I'm rooted or so I thought.
The last couple times I've restarted my device, I haven't seen the unlocked image rift before the red Verizon splash screen.
I'm just wondering if something has happened to my root? Why would it just revert back to the non-rooted boot image?
I also secretly like the unlock image more than the plain Jane image, but I am wondering what happened.
Thanks in advance.
Brett
P.S. root checker still tells me I'm rooted.

Verizon SCH-I545 Custom Recovery Disaster and Workaround

I got my brand new, shiny Verizon SGS4 yesterday and proceeded to root it via the published method (flash the old kernel etc.) and had no trouble at all. I then got a little daring and used GOO manager to download and install a custom TWRP recovery. After that my phone rebooted and gave me a screen that other Verizon users may be accustomed to with a "Samsung" and a picture of a lock and a nifty message saying that unauthorized software had been installed and the phone should be brought to the nearest Verizon store (I am a longtime ATT user who just switched to Verizon so I am thinking Verizon folks with older Samsung phones and locked bootloaders would know what this is about).
Long story short, rebooting of course didn't help. I went to ODIN and reflashed the newer boot image/kernel that I flashed after rooting the phone and when I rebooted I got the same Samsung and lock picture but to my surprise and happiness, the phone booted normally after that and was usable again.
Apologies for not giving the exact terminology for this but since I couldn't find this problem posted yet I thought I'd give everybody with a new Verizon SGS4 a heads up. Don't know about CWM but I suspect there isn't a compatible CWM recovery yet either and I can say I'm not going to be trying anything else fancy since we don't have an ODIN system dump yet to my knowledge with which to recover.
If anybody has any useful comments about Verizon and recoveries etc. please post away.

Which baseband are you on now? MF3? MJ6? Before which baseband were you on MDL? or MF3? What root method did you use?
It sounds like you rooted your phone, but did not take measures to prevent over the air (OTA) updating.
That OTA updating will destroy root, and lately also locks your bootloader in a manner that is even more restrictive.
It does not sound like you used any custom rom, and did not use Safe Strap either, but you need to provide more info for folks to work with.

You need to read all threads about 4.3, MJ6, and MJ9 in the "General" and " Q & A" sections of the forum to learn about what is happening with your phone.

"Custom" and Unlocked padlock on boot, but not rooted?

So my brother has an att galaxy s5 and out of no where, his camera pictures are very blurry and horrible. It seems like the camera has a problem focusing.
He tried restoring the phone, and updating to the newest software, but still the same so we're figuring it's some failure with the sensor? He has an appointment with the att device center on Tuesday so hopefully they replace it.
One problem though.. His phone says "custom" and has an open padlock whenever it boots up. He did have a custom rom on it before, and used safestrap to install it,but now he's back to stock. The padlock wasn't there when he had the custom rom on it, but when he flashed back to stock and updated it, it appeared. He's no longer rooted so I have no idea how to get rid of that for him. Any idea? Knox has not been triggered according to the service menu.
I can no longer reroot as it autoupdated to the latest ATT OTA which is 4.4.2
Thanks in advance!

[Q] AT&T Wipe, flash stock? Still root?

EDIT: FULL STORY BELOW. SKIP TO SECOND REPLY FOR UPDATE!
900A, AT&T, WAS 4.4.4. I rooted my phone with towelroot by downgrading via ODIN then reflashing 4.4.4. I've had the phone for a year and wanted to experiment with some custom roms--specifically Twi5ted Lollipop. The version I found last night was V3. Anyways I followed the instructions of installing safestrap then attempting to create a partition to host the mod. Every time I tried to boot the partition I would wait 12 minutes with nothing but a black screen (I presume a bootloop.) After reading some posts here I found it requires a clean flash--not a dirty flash. So I used safestrap to backup, then I wiped it and installed the mod. Nothing--still black screen. I then attempted to restore the backup I saved--fails every time.
At this point being the noob I am, I started to get very concerned. I went into advanced wipe and for some reason selected 'system' and wiped it. After a reboot, it shows the Samsung logo, goes blank, vibrates then goes back to the Samsung logo. I went into the standard bootloader and attempted to restore to factory settings but there is nothing to restore of course cause I wiped everything.
I'm currently at work bored as heck cause my phone is wiped. I can still go into download mode thankfully. Should I have no problems flashing stock via ODIN when I get home on my lunch break? Which stock firmware should I flash for this phone?
Thanks!
Unfortunately my lunch break brought me no good news. I downloaded stock found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2714455
After I flashed all the files (Except BL) when it boots, it get's to the Samsung logo--freezes halfway through then goes blank with the blue LED light on. I waited 10 minutes just to see what it does with no luck.
Another thing I found was weird-why when I boot does it still say 'Custom' when I flashed the stock firmware?
I really hope I don't have to drop $650 on a new phone Any help would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks guys!

AT&T bootloader is locked right? Regardless I tried flashing the bootloader as a last resort and ODIN failed. Figured it just confirmed what everyone else said that it's locked.
Is there a specific way I need to flash the files? Like one at a time?
Do I need to restore factory settings/delete cache THEN flash each? or vice versa?
Am I basically screwed since I have AT&T?
:crying::crying::crying::crying:
FIXED!
After flashing 4.4.2 several times and trying different things, I came across this thread which finally brought my phone back to life. Thanks XDA!!!

Motorola X style Xt1570 OS issues

HI I have just been trying to return to stock my XT1570 Motorola X Style.
Originally i unlocked the bootloader and rooted the original 5.1.1. software.
Later the OTA update came out and i cant get it as the phone is rooted.
I did have backups but have lost them now.
The boot loader is intact, the TWRP recovery is there and I can access it.
I flashed a new system using fastboot this system "fastboot_clark_retcn_ds_user_5.1.1_LPH23.145-7_7_release-keys-cid11-retcn_CN.tar" which i believe should be the correct one for China.
The phone boot normally, the warning about unlocking the bootloader and then the motorola graphics, but when all that is done the screen is just blank, the screen is obviously on, as you can see the back light, but it is in the totally black state.
Anyone got any ideas what has happened there.
I have tried flashing other roms for XT1572 and XT1575, however while they work to an extend, obviously some of the internals for the XT1570 are different, modem for instance.
Some expert help would be greatly appreciated.
