Hi guys, I can have SHIELD Tablet with Y01 battery but I'm little bit afraid of that fire hazard. It is running cool without any signs of overheating but I'm still worried that I can get my house burned. What is your opinion, is the danger real or is it just small number of batteries affected and this is just procaution by Nvidia? thank you for your answers!
I believe it has something to do with folks using super fast chargers, and the voltage causing the batteries to overheat and fail.
If you are using the stock charger, you should be fine until your replacement arrives.

Well, thing is, I can have unit with Y01 battery for free but without warranty and ability to ask for replacement unit. CM12.1 is installed so Nvidia can't kill it. Should I go for it?
I don't think that is a question any of us can answer for you. Is the danger real? Yes, very much so. There are at least 4 reports of fire damage. Can you reduce your chance of risk? Maybe. If I were you and wanted to keep mine, I'd make certain adjustments to how I use the device. For example, I wouldn't leave it plugged in while I was away. I would only use stock chargers. I wouldn't use the device outdoors (if its hot outside) or anywhere else it gets poor air circulation (on a carpeted floor).
Ultimately it has to be your decision. And check your local laws regarding insurance and use of known defective devices.

Phone works just fine, but in my haste to flash a rom I didn't check my battery charge and screwed the pooch. So I hacked a USB cord to route power to the phone. In the process of doing so I somehow torched the ability to charge a battery. So I am thinking 50 bucks or something like that.
*sigh* so now I have a droid incredible 2
However, this means that for a small price someone could have this droid 2 to build on and know that it just needs soldered power conduit or if you are really $$ you could figure out how to fix the charging aspect of the phone.
Thoughts comments.
I have been stalking the forums here for quite sometime, make donations and generally keep my mouth shut.

Honestly the phone is a paper weight really for anyone looking to get practical mobility out of it.
The only way the phone will power on is with the hacked USB cable I have made. Basically overrides battery and powers the phone.
Would be ideal for someone who wants to try and have verizon fix it. Or to build ROMs on.
The phone is in slightly used shape. Screen is protected and flawless. Keyboard is find as well. Small nick on one of the corners. The phone will not recognize any new battery. Phone loads a display of a battery with a ? inside of it. When a battery is inserted.
I am here to solve your problem my brutha Go to radio shack, they have a enercell universal charger for 40 bucks there that will let you charge ANY cell phone battery (did the same thing). Charge your battery and bring it back to the store for a full refund, or keep it like I did as I do stupid things regularly

We all know how brilliant a design the charge cord adapter is, I myself am on to my third one in almost two years. Well, the tablet stopped charging today and no matter which wall outlet I used or how much I wiggled the lead I could not make the light come on. Seeing that my Verizon contract is all but done at the end of this month and rather than buy another charge cord I decided to buy a new tab. I just picked up the new Asus Transformer Infinity, not too bad so far. Anyways, about 20 minutes after getting home with neither tablet charged to a useable level, the power goes out for a couple hours- just my luck too. When the power came back on suddenly the light on the Xoom came on. I hadn't touched it since I gave up on trying to get it to charge. Now here I am with two tablets and a $500 hole in my pocket. I know I was bound to get a new one eventually so I'm going to hang on to it but I never saw it happening like this.
Has anyone else had any issues regarding their chargers? Or anything unusual occur in general? I'm sure I'm not alone.
Ouch I would hate to folk out another $500 dollars for a new tablet even though my old one still works. I don't use my tablet for any intensive apps like games, so a new one would be pretty pointless for me. I never had any issues with my charger, well one time one of my charger did blow up, but that's because the battery was faulty for my jump charger for my car. Other than that, you might have some dust in the charger pin hole? Just a guess really.
I'm on my third charger since March. Original Motorola one died, second one (off eBay) burnt out, current one (off eBay) still working but I can't use the touchscreen while unit is charging.
I live remote using an off-grid power supply so this may have something to do with it.

Huh. I have four of them, from the original back in Feb '11 to one I was given a few months back, and they all work perfectly- and most of 'em are used every week (two at home, one in the office, one for travel).
agreed with kcrudup, ive been through 2, the only reason being i snapped the connector on the first one when i pulled it out at a bad angle
The charger that came with my refurbished Xoom lasted almost through the first charge. I thought I was going to have to send the whole thing back until I took it into the Verizon store and verified that it charged with a different charger. I've since got one off eBay and another with the standard dock. Both have been holding out so far.
Oh and my Xoom touch screen doesn't respond while charging either. Somewhere I read that a factory reset will fix that... but I'm waiting until my 90 day warantee is up to put EOS on it since my BT mouse works while it is charging.

My original charger is still working and I got my tablet 8 months back. I think the charger has lasted pretty well. How long did peoples original ones seem to last?

That's an electrical problem (noise and/or grounding issues with the charger raise the "noise floor" so the touchscreen controller has trouble determining what's a valid touch) and can't be cured by any reset, factory or full or ...
Your issue is your charger- try another.

Just a quick note.. I've had the ebay sourced chargers fail on my xoom ( and other devices). I found that the power ratings on some of them are rather optimistic... they simply are running at the outer limits to charge the tablet and failure can be internal to the power unit...best case.. or worst case failure dumps overvoltage or raw AC power to the tablet.
Fortunately my failed units were of the internal power supply version.. and aside from bad smells no real damage was done.
I have successfully built charger/power units after scavenging the connector from my failed power supplies and using a minimum 1.5 amp 12v dc supply... they seem to work fine.. and keeping one handy is much more convenient than wondering where I last used it :fingers-crossed:
as always.. your mileage may vary
Hmm, that's interesting. Unfortunately this charger is from Verizon and i would surely hope that their stuff work to the correct specs. I wonder sometimes that maybe the problem could be with the contact inside the tablet. Could that have something to so with it?

I think the Motorola/Verizon chargrs are good. I think the earthing issue is with the cheap chargers from China.
When I lost my cellphone charger I had to buy a Chinese one, well, when charging it looked like possessed by the Devil itself lol! The screen started acting strange and I wasn't able to control it... Then I found my original charger and the exorcism was complete lol^2! BTW, a guy on X10 mini pro community (one of the best developers I ever met - my favorite one ) lost a cellphone with a Chinese charger, so what can I say - be careful with it!

Is over-volting a big deal on these phones? It said in the manual not to use other manufacturer's chargers in danger of damaging the phone's hardware. I think I may have lost my charger that came with the phone.
No. Some people even refuse to use the stock charger.
All manuals state such things. Just use the third party one. It won't bite. However, don't buy the cheap ones. They suck bad.
Thanks, I'm just a little confused. I have a note as well, and I had the dock flex ribbon go out on me twice now. Some people in the note forum said that it might due to over-volting from aftermarket chargers.
Why wouldn't people want to use an oem charger though?
I don't use the stock charger, it sucks!

Some say it isn't powerful enough.
My history with li-po: only use what they say to use or your going to fry something.
Another reason I don't like the li-po batteries are each cell has a minimum volt it can be drained to and once that voltage is passed the cell becomes no good, swollen or completely exploded.
But what do I know, I only use li-po in my high performance RC cars.

So what's the verdict? To use, or not to use?
It's fine to use other chargers (unless they're the really cheap nasty kind).
Basically, the phone draws what it needs, so you're not at risk of it blowing up or anything.
I use the OEM Samsung charger from my wife's s2.
No overheating and works wonders.
Amazon has them for around 5bucks

Hey all at xda,
Recently I purchased, second hand, a Nexus 4. But I have been having massive issues with the battery. Firstly it seems to be completely inaccurate in reading the battery levels. It jumps all over the place, and reports back RIDICULOUS charging speeds. (10 minutes and the phone went form 7% to 95% :S).
The other problem that I have been having aside from those strange sporadic readings is the fact that the phone does not work at all when it's not plugged in. It lasts for 3 or 4 seconds after I unplug it, and then turns off, and appears to bootloop when I attempt to start it back up again, even when I plug it back in. I CAN get into the bootloader and my TWRP recovery perfectly fine and with no issues. TWRP often reports a 25% battery drop despite the fact that I JUST removed its charger.
It still bootloops when I plug the charger back in and let it charge for some time. I actually have to go into recovery and execute a factory reset to be able to get back into the ROM.
Should I try different ROMs?
Originally I put on cyanogenmod 11 kitkat. While I was running through the initial phone setup was the first time I encountered this unplugged issue. Due to this, and the bootloop I thought I had softbricked the phone, and so I reflashed from CWM to TWRP and put on a different ROM.
I upgraded to kitkat 4.4.4 this ROM to be exact. There seemed to be no issue it runs PERFECTLY when plugged in. But still doesn't last when not plugged in, and begins reporting strange battery percentages, eventually turning off completely.
When attempting to restart the phone I get the Google image, with the unlocked padlock at the bottom, and then it goes straight to the battery image with the electricity symbol in the middle. The same occurs when starting from the bootloader. Occasionally the same occurs when attempting to get into twrp but not always.
Is this simply a battery issue, and will replacing the battery solve the issue, or are there larger problems at steak here? Did I get ripped right off by the seller. (Doesn't seem like it, seller told me to contact him if there were any issues and he would do his best to help / solve the problem for me.)
Thanks guys,
Pensai
I would try out some roms and kernels and see what happens. And if nothing helps than contact your retailer and ask for him
Sounds like the battery is bad to me.

I'll try some more rom's and see if the issue persists. Unfortunately contacting my retailer won't help as this is a second hand purchase from an individual, rather than a store/company. (got a sick deal btw 180 for it ).

I'm hoping this is purely the issue, since it's and easy fix, I'll try the above suggestion when I get home from work. (or before hehe) If new roms and kernals don't fix the issue I suppose I'll order a new battery and hope for the best. They're pretty cheap anyway.
Another thing that may be worth mentioning, is that USB charging seems to be useless in giving the battery any juice. It somehow is actually capable of draining quicker than it chargers if left on plugged in. Even turned completely off and just plugged in to charge yields no results. It must be plugged into the wall.
Just a bit of an update, I got home from work and noticed that the screen had begun to separate from the chassis. I suspected that perhaps the battery was bloated, given the issues I have been having. I am now 99% sure it is the battery.
When I took the phone apart, the battery was indeed bloating and and even burst open on the bottom, exposing these 'layers' along with some casing ruptures on the bottom of the battery as well.
I have ordered a new battery and it has shipped. Hopefully a new battery is the nail in the coffin for this issue.

It still is a Li-Po battery. Li-Po and Li-Ion both are types of Lithium-Ion batteries, the difference is that their structure is different
Li-Po is safer and less hazardous

I'm editing my original post because some people find my description a little misleading. I ran into a problem yesterday, using a stock charger I plugged my phone in, and about a minute later, started smelling something burning, i saw smoke coming from my phone, I pulled out the charger and my charger was was on fire and then started glowing. Anyone else have that happen? Ruined my charging port, my phone was about 3 weeks old, stock ROM and I don't use third party chargers, I have two wireless chargers but decided to use the included fast charging cable that day. Samsung repaired my phone, they told me they had 4 people call in that day with the same issues.

Uh oh? could it be an over voltage problem from your outlet / house? Id clear up that first. I don't want my Note to catch fire too!
Probably had moisture in the port and it was shorting the charger.
Stop trying to ruin this for everyone
Stop the b.s espionage
Stop being a cheapskate and buy the wireless charger
My guess you went and rooted your phone let the battery drain to 0% and now your trying to get a new phone. Take this down it doesn't help anyone.
This is unlikely an issue of the Note8 itself, rather like others have said either the port was moist or some voltage problem of the charger.
I charge mine (sometimes after it shuts down itself after being fully used) and it works fine, no issues here on N950F (Yes I know, it's not the US variant) using stock charger.
No idea why you're blaming the charger and calling someone a "cheapskate" for not using the wireless one.
BUT: @DroidisLINUX
Dude you're seriously not helpful at all. Literally just accusing, calm down.
I'm pretty sure "rooting" wouldn't be the cause, even if, he should be aware of the consequences like no warranty but since it's a US Note8, y'all have the SamFail root which doesn't trip knox, so a last resort would be to reflash stock FW and ask Samsung again.
I'm not rooted, haven't rooted any of my phones since I had my S6, and i was thinking about the moisture possibility too, but I had a note 8 charging on it before I put mine on charge, yeah I have 3 in the household. Don't think it's a voltage problem, I have everything connected to surge protectors. I have 2 wireless chargers, that's how I'm charging my phones until this gets fixed.

I would highly appreciate you rephrasing your first post/ thread title because it doesn't entirely resemble the situation fella, because (If i understood it right) it didn't actually caught fire, just some smoking.
Secondly, the N7's battery "blew" up after catching smoke/ fire. Highly doubt it'll be the same with the N8, just my guess.
But yea, a little rephrasing would be appreciated man. Hope Samsung does give you a replacement!

Could not agree more.
Are there problems with draining the phone to 0?
Mine just caught on fire tooooooooo! (subscribe and like boost LG stats LOL!!!)
My husband is having the exact same issue. Have Samsung replaced your phone
I noticed for years that the Samsung charger adapters were easily able to be damaged. Usually after dropping the charger adapter. The charger would get so very hot after a hard drop that I stopped using them or not work at all. I had this problem for years all the way back with the Galaxy Note 2 (My first Samsung Android device).
I wonder if this can be the cause.
So you call your post "Note 8 catching on fire after smoking" yet it didn't catch fire.
I suggest you edit your post title to "Note 8 smoking" since it didn't catch fire.
A lot of factors could lead to smoke, a solid one is moister, as suggested in an earlier reply. it happens. It sounds like a random occurrence, I use charge cables at work and home and have NO issues with heat or smoke.
This looks like some people trying to start a mass histeria crisis to discredit this phone......
Where's the recall????
