Please NO MORE UPDATES. PLease HELP ME STOP 5.1 UPDATE - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How can you even avoid updating your phone? I got my T Mobile phone yesterday and before I could finish creating my Google account, Android restarted the phone in Odin and installed an update. I am still on 5.0.1 but I do not want any more updates. I actually wanna see how Kit Kat runs because my phone's battery sucks, granted I still have to work out battery life tricks and read up on stuff, but I find it ridiculous that I need to put my phone on power saving mode off the bat to get it to last till 5 Pm with moderate use...very moderate use. I don't even play games. And I've heard horror stories of reverting back to Kit Kat so I'm scared that my 400 dollar phone will become useless if I try it
It just seems Samsung is out to sabotage the Note 4 family so we buy their crappy Note 5

Settings, about phone, software updates, automatic updates: off.
Even with this set on, you only get a message about an available update. You don't have to apply it. And Odin is a program on your PC, not your phone. When you do apply an available OTA update, the phone goes to recovery mode to perform the update.

Oh I meant recovery mode. I did not apply an update. The phone automatically updated itself. Are you sure this works? I have heard people say they got updates regardless of forcing their phones not to update

I've never had a phone force an update on me and I always have the above setting set to on. It would also really surprise me: what if you're waiting for an important call? Maybe during first installation it's different? In that case: skip the installation wizard, don't yet setup WiFi, and setup your Google account and WiFi later.

Too late for that. Are you on Lollipop? I haven't had time to start browsing for ROMs yet. Prbly won't for a while since I'm jumping straight from internship to school. Btw I actually have a Note Edge but I figure they essentially have the same Bloatwiz/Lagwiz stuff in them

Going to a newer OTA will not make your phone useless, thats just serious over-reaction. Im on BOG5, and am able to "debloat". I get more than a full day of battery, and that includes surfing the web, playing music, some games, and bluetooth on all the time (hooked up to my car).

Man I'm jealous. Tradeoff on getting the Edge. Not much ROM support.

[Q] Dismally slow application response

For awhile now, my Droid 2 has been slow - slow to launch applications, slow to respond to touch, etc. I cannot attribute it to any newly installed application. Updates, maybe, but I'd have no idea which. I had it rooted with Z4Root, but then Verizon pushed out 2.3 and the phone became so slow that it is totally unreliable. I'll receive phone calls and 25% of the time the call will go to voice mail before I can get the phone to respond. I'll try to make a call and it may be 30 or more seconds between initiating the call to when the dialer appears and dials. Data speeds are slow.
At times the phone seems to operate at almost normal speeds and then it gets slow again. I've removed root access and uninstalled applications that require root access. I've also removed many other applications that I just don't need or use.
On my SD card it says I have 6.11GB free (out of 14.83 total). For "Application Storage" it says I have 5.63 Available Space.
I can't figure out what's wrong. Are there any suggestions short of resetting the phone to factory defaults and staring over?
Thanks,
Andrew
This has happened to my phone before also (droid2 rooted stock rom).
What i did to fix the situation, was the only thing i could think of.
I just did a factory reset to froyo and my phone was fast again.
Just back up all you apps and do a factory reset, its your only real option far as i can tell.
You could try installing something like 3g watchdog to monitor your apps and see if maybe 1 of them is eating up your phones processor.
Good luck.
Far as i can tell these phones are not much different from a home pc, in that they acquire so much extra pointless bull**** during their use that it just clogs the system. Forcing a reinstall just like a home pc.
Once they are reset back to factory, their performance returns to normal along with battery life.
Just be careful not to keep putting useless apps you dont even use onto your phone, just the apps that are absolutely necessary.
Keeping to this formula keeps my phone in tip top shape, short of changing roms or major tweaking.
Sigh I guess I'll need to try the reset.
I do have Watchdog installed and the last reported 'incident' was three days ago. No help there.
Everything is backed up, so here it goes... (I'll post back once I recover.)
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I am having the same issues. I have an R2D2 stock, never rooted. Since the Gingerbread update, it has been flaky and getting worse. It is rebooting several times a day. I miss calls because the screen won't respond. Sometimes the hard keyboard won't respond and I have to manually reboot the phone to get the keyboard back. At least once, the soft keyboard wouldn't work either. I am hating Gingerbread but am at a loss on how to remove it. I'll be watching for your updates.
The gingerbread update has been reported to have several annoying as hell bugs, i never installed it for that reason alone. Besides i don't feel like loosing the ability to tether wireless, just to upgrade to a buggy version of android. Ill wait for ice cream to hit then maybe upgrade if i see something worth upgrading for. Till then its froyo, maybe try cyanogen mod 7.1
Far as going back to froyo from gingerbread, i know its been done and is fairly easy to do. Not sure how much different it is from a factory reset.

At a crossroads with N4 and Lolipop

Ive owned the Nexus 4 for about two years now and have enjoyed it as my first smartphone experience. The new android OSs have generally had good improvements. However I am displeased with lolipop.
I use my phone for work and liked keeping my exchange email separate from my gmail accounts. Now that gmail manages all of them i had to find a new email app and get that working, not a huge deal, but a few hours i didn't have. I now use Nine for my work emails.
Second and more importantly, lolipop broke the DS Battery Saver app. The battery life on the Nexus 4 wasn't great to begin with without the DSBS app. But with the app it was greatly improved. The forced sleep feature at specific intervals was great. I didn't need to receive notifications for everything real time. With the lolipop update my phone goes from 100% charged when i get to the office in the morning and hits 50% at lunch time with my phone sitting unused on my desk for 4-5 hours. I dont need the phone telling me i received a work email when outlook does that for me on my laptop. Before on kitkat my phone would lose about 15-20% sitting unused on my desk at work over an 8-10hr day, now it wont even make it that far on a full charge.
So my novice conclusion is to factory reset the phone and install the last version of kitkat, root the phone for DSBS works with 5.0.1, or find a new app that works with the lolipop changes and does what DSBS did pre lolipop.
Ive never rooted a phone or downgraded the OS, I am tech savy on computers but when it comes to phones I just want it to work for my needs without tinkering for hours or days every time a new OS comes around.
What is the best option for my needs? Is there anything I am over looking that might be simpler? If I root now at 5.0.1, do i not receive new updates or need to do something to get new updates every time there is one?
TIA.
stay on 4.4.4 then
Install better battery stats. Find the offending app and greenify it.
For the email issue: install a 3rd party client if you don't like the stock one.
Just like using chrome browser instead of i.e on your windows os. Nothing wrong with 3rd party.
Also don't check your work email from your personal phone. Unless slavery is legal in your country.

Sprint Note 5 OTA Nougat now available

Just found this article. Hopefully ATT and TMO are not far behind..
Folks rocking the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will want to be on the lookout for an OTA to hit their phone. It’s Nougat!
The update is coming in as version N920PVPU3DQC5, a 1.4GB affair. It’ll be receiving all of Nougat’s new features and those which Samsung are delivering as part of a big upgrade to TouchWiz. It may even make your phone feel brand new, though we aren’t promising anything. Oh, and its security patches are fairly up to speed with a March 1st, 2017 level.
Anyway, for such a massive file size you’ll want to make sure you’re on a WiFi connection and have a decently charged battery (let’s say more than 50% to be on the safe side) before attempting to pull it down. Head to the settings menu on your phone to look for it manually if it hasn’t already hit your notifications tray.

Downloaded yesterday and installed, everything works fine. Not sure if I like the settings page since it looks messy...Guess I will get use to it. Good thing I got 3gb back. One weird problem was when I click the "phone" shortcut it opened gallery...I have tried many times and it's the same thing. So I deleted it, drag a new shortcut of phone on home screen, worked fine.
Battery life about same, 8-9 hours normal daily use.

Removing the downloaded but not installed Nougat update

Hi, first post. I asked the question on another site some months back about deleting or stopping the install notification about the downloaded, although not installed Nougat update, no answers were forthcoming. My phone on 6.0.1 works great and I have no issues that warrant an upgrade. I have hardly any apps installed on it and really only use it for light internet, photos, the phone and GPS. I don’t really want to update it to Nougat due to some of the horror stories I have read. I am not (yet) very Android proficient.
Can I just leave the downloaded Nougat updated installed, but stop the daily notification to install it?
Or
Can I easily delete the downloaded but not installed Nougat update?
In this case I subscribe to the notion, if it isn’t broke don’t touch it. Maybe I am being too overly cautious.
Current details
Hardware: XT1642.
Version: 6.0.1
Build: MPJ24.139.23.4
Security Update: 1 May 2016
Any help steering me in the right direction is appreciated.
Cheers,
@CC2005
If you remove downloaded files, still it will not stop, then you will get notification for new update available and to download it.
Better if you update to latest version,
otherwise you need to restrict notification for moto updater app or data for it. (I don't remember correctly if those feature existed on MM, as the way it is present in N)
It looks as if I will have to just go ahead and install the OTA Nougat 7.0 update that has downloaded; as there doesn't seem to be a simple way of stopping the notification to install it. As mentioned, I didn't want to install Nougat as it works perfectly now on 6.01, maybe I am just worrying about nothing, obviously Nougat 7.0 doesn't stuff up all devices.
It is still in warranty so if an OTA update causes problems I may be able to return it?
Cheers

If there is any problems and if it's under warranty, you can surely take it to the service center.
As far as I know, if you get a replacement device, it will be updated to the latest version out of the box. So there is no way going back to MM.
If you still want to use MM, your only hope is custom ROMs.
You can't downgrade the official updates.
Nougat is not that bad. Most of us are waiting for Oreo and I am wondering how are you still on MM
Have a nice Day :good:

I have disabled most of the Motorola notifications "Motorola Update Services", "Motorola Notification" and one or two others. This sometimes prevents the "Install System Update" notification as long as I do not power it off, I put it to sleep by putting if face down. Although most of the time I have to delay the install manually by rescheduling the install time-pressing later etc when the message pops up.
I am a light user, and can get up to 8 days (rarely) usage out of a single charge, I have disabled a lot of Google & other Apps that I don't want to use, and turned off many Google Play Services. Lots of photos, calls and WiFi use I get 2-3 days use, so I am trying to keep the current OS. Also the works reasonably well in very hot weather taking photos and using the GPS-off line maps, it does at times get hot and can suffer camera issues and more so, GPS stuttering and lag above 35C-40+C but shade it from the sun and minimise use and it will work ok.
Cheers & have a great day too.
Ok, I've been operating with Nougat 7.0 for two months now. There are pros and cons and some of the cons I will adapt to as they are only preferences, minor setting and appearance.
My main concerns about the OS update were battery life and heating. Normal use, the battery drains a little quicker without WIFI or Sim data on, not enough to cause concern. But with WIFI and or sim data on, it definitely uses more battery power than before, almost at an average of 10%-15% more-not a scientific analysis. I am not a big data users so again not big concern. Although when using data, downloading, surfing etc, the battery rate depletes at a much quicker rate than before, I would estimate 30%-40% faster. I also notice the battery depletes much quicker when using the camera and the associated heat when using the camera feels (going by sense not measuring it) somewhat higher. The camera and video mode are the one that bother me and I forgot to mention, using offline maps, gps enabled (no WIFI or Sim data activated) the battery use is again higher than before.
So, I would have been better off on MM, yes, but it is what it is and I can work around the battery issue when I know my usage of those features will be heavy. A cheap pocket portable USB charger may need to be purchased.
I haven’t done a factory reset and I have only cleared the cache via settings app. Maybe the next step before a portable pocket USB charger is purchased.
Cheers

absolute garbage os. this is why i never upgrade software

had android 7
i did a factory reset to see if it would fix some issues. it didnt
so said after 2.5 years of owning phone maybe ill update to new android version. maybe that will alleviate some stresses i have from this poop phone.
wow what garbage went to android v8. nonstop bugs.
garbage new "enhancements". makes my blood boil
this is why i never update things unless its absolutely broken and no choice. i dont believe in updating and only believe in clean installs.
power button stops working randomly. i cant turn off the phone. only can take the battery out.
boots into safe mode and i need to reboot again. switches my keyboard from ms swipe back to the garbage oem one horrible keyboard that oem one
keeps harassing me to update even though ive tried to stop notifications reminding me. maybe im doing something wrong. i went into developer mode and have automatic updates turned off. but after v8 it doesnt work
everything lags like crazy. horribly slow
when it gets to 22% battery it shuts off. im using oem batteries only. i had aftermarket when it was new but they would shut off randomly so got rid of rhem. i have 4 oem. 2 newish
still same issue where i have no signal(no internet /data) at times in vertical mode and turn it horizontally signal bars increase and phone works again

no photo editing app is there
no 2nd screen is on when i have my phone off so if i want to see the clock i have to trun it on ot double tap. double tap doesn't work on first try. only 2nd time.
no editing bittons in 2nd screen
absolute garbage os. now to factory reset again and never to update again
i hope lg's phone section goes rhe way of bb/htc/ms/nokia. they just create garbage phones. and will never forgive for the bootloop issues in my g4 and hence why their markwt share is down the shets. feckem. let me rot.
Thw phone is so unstable i did a factory reset again thinking it would go back to v7 on my phone but that garbage v8 is burned into my rom on thw phone such a huge mistake ive not made in a long time

The battery issue, i know for me at least was an issue with the OEM batteries. Even brand new ones will shut off at decent a % left, The best i can say for that is go for an aftermarket battery. (if you really want to), I have a power button issue as well, Try putting a small piece of paper in the back of your phone, right above the SD card slot, (double folded usually works for me) That might solve your issue as well.
Your phone booting into recovery/safe mode etc sounds like a bad system install to me. Factory resetting unfortunately won't fix that. If your phone is rooted you can just reinstall your system via recovery. If not, if you have a computer handy, you can download a tool from LG called "LG Bridge". Plug in your phone via usb and click recovery to reinstall your system.(it will wipe everything. if you have an SD card take it out for safety)
The lag could be due to overheating, mine lagged at first on android 8 but quit. The lag could also be due to the bad install of the system as well.
Hopefully you could find some help. This is a great phone in my opinion. Working great for me!
Download the nougat KDZ from here and flash back. I tried oreo as well and was not too happy. Plus it's missing the patched camera libs.
broke the phone. punched it and snapped it in half. great relief. I should poop on it and send it back to lg
soon will be getting librem 5 and dsiconnect from google. feck all their tracking. no drive no gmail no maps/waze. nothing to do with them anymore. people dont realize how much information they readily give out. cc fingerprints private emails. all contacts/family. whatsapp and fb too. no fb. whatsapp is going as well.
