Access Shield TV Pro and external hard drive from network? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there anyway to access the external drive or the Pro's 500GB drive from my network? I can see it as SHIELD on my network and I can see the IP address, but I can't seem to access it no matter what I try.
All I want to do is to add/remove files from my AIO desktop and to have my Emby server on-line. I was able to do both when I had the external drive connected to my mini-desktop, but not with the Shield TV Pro.
Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I answered this in your other thread so I am going to copy & paste my response here.
If your Shield Device is rooted, you can always give Servers Ultimate Pro (comes up as the Amazon free app of the day quite often) a try & setup a simple SMB server. You would probably need Server Pack B (this is free). I actually have this setup on my Nexus Player with Stickmount.

Thanks. So there is no other way without rooting? That's disappointing.

Thanks. I got excited, but it didn't work. It might be because the Shield TV and my desktop are connected via ethernet and not wifi. Any thoughts?

There are other server types you can select from in the app that don't require root. Samba just happens to need root because of the need for certain ports that are off limits when not rooted. I just chose Samba because its one of the easiest ways to connect to windows.

Wirelessly Transfer Files to and from Xoom using FTP (look mom no cables)

Hello Everyone,
This isn't anything ground breaking but it might be something that someone has not thought about doing to their Xoom yet. You can easily turn your Xoom into an FTP Server through a free application. And then get an FTP client for your computer. Then use your computer to upload and download files onto your Xoom over the local Wifi or Internet. File transfer between devices is really fast and works very well. I have a video tutorial running through the basics on getting this working both on your Computer and on your Xoom.

Dropbox is cloud based. Your information is saved on a remote server where any device that supports Dropbox can download from it. So you have to upload it to the cloud from your computer, then download the files to your xoom.
This type of direct FTP transfer is similar to a USB transfer. There is no intermediate storage space, like a dropbox, you are directly transferring files from your Xoom to your computer or vice versa.
I personally use both. They have different functionality. If I want to quickly transfer a file to my android device, I use FTP. If I want to store a file so I can grab it later from any of my devices, I use cloud.
grab an app from the market called Websharing.
It allows you to transfer files, wirelessly, from an android device/to a computer and vice versa, all through a web browser..
very handy for transferring stuff without a wire...
FYI, all of the decent file explorers for android have this feature built in. No need to download another app.

Agreed. I was more or less throwing the idea out there. But there are many options and applications both for the Server and Client.
What I like about this option is that it uses such an age-old-tried-and-true method of moving files.
Nothing weird, ****ed up, magical about it like USB on Linux that dosn't want to work 90% of the time
please try wifi explorer available in the market.
I use SwiFTP server on my Xoom & DroidX. The I just FTP files to and from my devices with Filezilla. There might be better ways but this works just fine for me.
With as fast as the USB data is on the xoom (like a movie a minute, if not faster) i dont see why you would want to do this if your already at your computer. If your out and about then yeah, that's cool.
I've done the same on my Nexus One for ages.
The idea is that this effectively gives you ability to push files onto the device wirelessly without having to go and find it. And you don't actually need an FTP client - in Windows, at least, Explorer (not IE, but the stock file manager) can perfectly well handle ftp://... if you type it in the address bar. If you also assign a name to your phone on the router, you can use that instead of IP, so you don't have to look it up on the phone.
Also note that we're talking about running an FTP server on the phone (exposing /sdcard), not connecting to other servers out there. "All of the decent file explorers for android" are FTP clients, which is quite different.
Yea, there's multiple ways to go about this. I just use an app called Samba Filesharing from the market. It just makes your internal storage visible on the network as an SMB share. Works really well. I've also started to use AndSMB to browse my home FreeNAS server as well so that's another option I suppose.
I actually prefer awesome drop or dropbox(when it is working right) but nice thinking outside of the box
I can highly recommend "File Expert",
for me it's the ultimate app/toolkit - all in one
just uploaded 2 GB of music files to my Xoom via that "Sharing" -> "Start Share via FTP" function

[Q] Any idea on how to transfer files from PC to A500 without SD or Root?

Any idea on how to transfer files from PC to A500 without SD or Root? Thanks!
Why not use the included mini-USB cable?
Another option would be some kind of file manager. I use ES File Explorer. I can navigate over LAN to my laptop / desktop and grab files.
Dropbox is another option. Though you'd first have to send the files to your DB folder on your PC - this does have the added benefit of being able to get to those files anywhere you have a WiFi connection though.
File expert is nice. Plus it can stream media from your PC.

Dropbox
How about dropbox, then it's pretty much automatic after you save the file on the PC.

One thing I noticed is that some of the folders that appear on Root Explorer do not appear on my computer like the beautiful widgets folder.

vs. USB:
downloading files is much faster over wifi than USB, and there's no performance hit like there is with USB.
I can access my files from anywhere I have a data connection. it was nice the other day to think about an album i wanted to hear and download it over my work wifi
vs. Dropbox
no special folders to setup, you just browse the file structure on your server.
The only real issues I have with it so far are:
I can't set a default download folder on my A500. I'm hoping they fix this.
You have to kill the client to move files from the default download folder to say your external sd card.
Whats the best way of obtaining the files if you have external hard drive on a network? I've been told of several file folder managers, but have been unsuccessful in getting into my network.
You can accomplish this with tonido as long as your external USB drive is mapped to your pc.

Re. Dropbox
I agree, a way to change the default folder/location to an external SD card would be nice.
Also, a way to set a global 'hard download' option for all or a folder would be nice vs. the individual file(s).
For some of us without a full time 3G/Wifi connection I prefer to have my files synced and resident on the device.
Nobody using Acer sync? The client is already pre-installed on the Iconia, you just have to install Acer sync on your PC. Sync by wifi or USB on demand. Pretty easy to use. I also use remote web desktop app with nice drag and drop feature, websharing by NextApp and wifi explorer which give you more control on which folder to transfer files.

i'm still trying to figure out how to move music files around. I connect my tablet to my computer via usb cable. I put some music into the acer music folder and then look for it with the google music app and nothing comes up. But everytime I look at the music folder on the a500 using my computer the albums and songs show up. I can find the music on my computer with the clear fi app but when i click on a song to listen to it clear fi says it dosent support the file. Every thing I have has been downloaded to windows media player.

When you are adding a path to your videos (assuming you have used Stickmount to mount the HDD), first click on Videos, then Files. Then Click Add Videos, Browse. Then go to External Storage. Your mounted HDD should be listed at the end of the list.

Thanks for the reply. Well, I didn't use stickmount. Because I could access my HDD from ES File Explorer without it. Shall I root and use that app?
As far as I know, you can only fully access an external HDD after you root. I'd refer to the Development subforum for guides to do that.

Thanks, will try that.
I used Stickmount and it worked. Thanks again @kaestnerkyle .
It seems you've solved your problem, but here's some more info for future reference.
I didn't want to have a HDD plugged into each device directly. So, my movies are on a 3TB HDD that's plugged directly into my router via USB. The Nexus Player reads this just fine, as do other devices. We've had it (the router) streaming 3 HD movies at a time to various devices (though bitrates vary, and these were lower bitrate encodes).
It also doesn't require root or secondary apps to help read the media.
Has anyone managed to connect multiple hard drives? I've tried to do this because I have my movie library on multiple drives and it only ever sees the first Drive that gets plugged in. Am I doing something wrong? Will stickmount accomplish this and if so, how do I do it? I had stickmount installed before and didn't get what I desired.

I have a slow one. I have an older 3TB Seagate, connected via USB 2.0 (yes, two point zero), to a router known for slow read times. At best, it seems to read and transfer 48mbit (6MByte)/sec over the network. Under ideal situations, that's 1 Blu-Ray rip (no re-encode), or 3-5 1080p Handbrake encodes streaming throughout the house. We've done 3 to different devices simultaneously with no issues.
You won't need a fast hard drive. Your router will be the main limitation for read speeds. Go over to small net builder and compare their routers, especially by HDD read speed.

I have no recommendation. I just wanted to know your hardware so that I can help you configure it.
That said, first, I need you to access your router's settings. To do that, open your web browser and in the URL box, type "192.168.1.1" without the quote marks, then hit enter. You should get a popup asking for a username and password. If you didn't change these, they will be (by default):
username: admin
password: password
That said, you should get a page with two tabs that are labeled "BASIC" and "ADVANCED." Click on advanced.
From there, on the left side, click "USB Functions." After that, click "Ready SHARE Storage."
This will bring up your storage management screen, displaying whatever you have connected via USB. You should see a Network/Device name, and a Workgroup name. Assign something or leave them as default (don't tell me what they are). Under "Available Network Folders" at the bottom you should see something that says \\XXX\USB_Storage, where XXX = your Network/Device name. This should display total and free storage, and there should be a grayed out radio button to the left.
If all of this is correct, then your storage is working properly. If it's not, we'll need to mess with it. So, report back and let me know where you stand on this.

Good! I also found this guide:
http://blog.en.uptodown.com/hard-drive-local-network/
I'm going to buy a new router and I was asking myself if I need a router with usb port or save some money and buy one cheaper without any port ...
and I now discovered I can use the usb to share a full HDD ... and reproduce all of my media files from multiple devices!
This is great.
Can you confirm I can access contents through Kodi or some Music Player directly? How is the shared HDD seen from the Android devices? I mean: I need some configuration (maybe with ES File Explorer) or any app that has explorer capabilities can see it directly??
Last question: can I also write files on the HDD (with my computer) while other devices are streaming/reading contents from it??
thanks!
Just to mention, you do not need root to access an external drive. ES File Explorer finds the connected HDD without any problems what so ever. Browse to your video and choose which app to play in. So far I've been able to play videos in MX Player and KODI from ES. But the mentioned players can't find the HDD, don't know why ES can.

[Q] How to share a Nexus Player directory?

Hi,
any idea how to setup a Samba share on a NP without root?

It needs root AND SEL set to "permissive" on Marshmallow. That's why I can't get it to work. I had it working on an old tablet (because there is no way I'm setting SEL mode to "permissive" anymore) and tried to transfer a file, all sorts of errors and when it did work, it was VERY slow.
So this app, really not useful.

That's true, yes. But there is no ES File Explorer for your PC / MAC, so sending files from a PC to a Android device won't work that way. (unless you count installing bluestacks emulator and running ES that way from a PC)

Best Way to add a 5TB External Drive and transfer files to it over LAN

Hi guys,
I want to add a 5TB external drive to my NSTV to store and play UHD Movies from. This is an attempt avoid network and other speed issues that might occur when streaming from my main server.
What is the easiest way to achieve this?
I want to be able to see the new 5TB drive from my server and to write files to it without problems.
Thanks in advance.
I'm guessing you want an always on solution? Personally I just start remote access from within ES file explorer on the Sheild TV which allows me to then FTP into the device. However that is not always on obviously.

That is the name of the app I am using "FTP Server" on the Shield with WinSCP on the Windoze computer
I've tried creating an FTP Server in "Servers Ultimate" app and the FTP Server app but I am unable to write files to the external hard drive. However I can do it with ES File Explorer's remote access.
I would rather an always on solution.....
servers ultimate had some issues with android 6.0. I think this is what your running into. They have fixed the issue in some test builds but i don't know the status of an actual release is. I use servers ultimate to create a SMB server which is a bit easier to use.
I've done this. I just connect my 5TB external hard drive directly to the shield. It is USB 3.0 ports, you won't get any faster.
If you then connect the micro USB to your computer, you'll be able to see the shields internal & the drive you connected.
Alternately, a lot of routers have USBs in the back of them. Which you can make your external hard drive into a NAS
Last option, you can simply connect it to your computer and share the drive. It'll appear on the network, just make sure the shield is on the same network, and you'll be able to connect from there \\<computer name\<shared folder>
The down side is that the latter would need to have the PC always on in order to access the shared folder.
Hope that helps layout the options.
Hi! I have a similar setup for my Shield with 4 HHD's in a USB-HDD-Hub (overall space of 8 TB atm, all formated in NTFS) connected through USB 3.0.
My plan was to run a SMB or FTP Server on the Shield and transfer new Files through LAN to it but I ran into issues with file permissions due to Android 6.0 and/or the NTFS format on my HDD's. The best App I could find to solve my problems is "FTPDroid". Once you start the Shield FTPDroid automaticly starts a FTP Server in the background so you only need to configure it once and you are done. It can handle Android 6.0 so you can write on your Shield and on your HDD's.
The problem with this solution - you will have to root your Shield.
But I can tell you it's definitly worth the trouble. I just had to set up root and configure the app one time. After that everything works on its own and you can enjoy your Shield.
