Home Button Galaxy S6 (virtual vs physical) - Galaxy S6 General

Hi everyone, I dont post often (if ever) but wanted to share my experiences with my Samsung Galaxy S6. I previously owned a Moto X (1st gen), which for those who do not know had strictly on screen back/home/toggle buttons. That said, the S6 has a physical home button with capacitive buttons on each side for back/toggle. You are probably thinking, 'yeah so?', well hear me out.
This is a big change for someone who is used to simply 'tapping' (or barely touching) a button to get to home screen versus having to physically push down a button. I often use one hand navigating my phone, so trying to click the home button down on the S6 with one hand without the force of this nearly pushing it out of my hand is somewhat frustrating. I find myself often having to use two hands just to get back to the home screen, just typing this out makes me frustrated. GREAT phone though, I just do not understand why Android doesnt make it an option across the board for all phones to have virtual home task bar at the bottom of every screen. Yes, it may take away some screen space, but with the way it worked on most phones the buttons go away when watching video in full screen mode and only reappear when your finger taps the area.
I realize some prefer the physical home button, but let me tell you the way Moto designed their phones made a physical home button completely unnecessary. They use a technology that 'wakes' up the phone as soon as it senses your presence near the phone (like your hand reaching for it), then tap the screen and viola! Phone can be unlocked without pressing down firmly on some 'physical' button.
Now, I dont know if its possible, but if anyone could manage to do this I would be the first one in line to buy the app. If there was a way to make the S6 home button more like a capacitive button so that when placing your finger on it to 'unlock' using fingerprint scan it 'awakes', that would be amazing. Adding to that, when unlocked if you simply put your finger on the button and it went to home (versus physically pushing the button down with force, causing me to use another HAND!), well I would probably send you a personalized thank you vid with a check.
Anyone else feeling the same on physical buttons vs virtual?

Physical buttons are one of the reasons i stay with Samsung. I hate losing screen real estate to buttons, just like i hate having to do an action to get them there; all of this doubly so, when all the phones shipping have a chin that can easily accommodate buttons (in terms of size at least). I am stubborn, but ill be blunt. I want the buttons there at my convenience, not when software thinks i want them.
And even with the "huge" 5.1" screen, i hate the thought of losing what little screen space i have on my s6, to wasted buttons..
Yeah... no thanks.

I hear you on the wasted screen space deal.
But what if you replaced the button area with a bigger screen, then you have the option of having a button there (which would go away when not needed) or extra screen space for viewing.
I guess there is going to always be a difference of opinion on the matter. Just dont see the need for it anymore.

I hate the hard home buttons on Samsung devices with a passion. I don't much like software buttons either. I'd much rather have a touch sensitive home button just like the back and multitasking keys.

I hate losing screen too. Don't mind the physical button

Soft keys personally. Also works better with rotation though more of an issue with tablets than phones who are upright most of the time

If you know amoled well, you will understand impossible to use virtual button as that large of area will burn in if the same screen stay for a very long time. That's why Samsung deny to follow Googly virtual button policy and stick with physical.

If this were true, the top area showing cell power and battery would burn the screen too.
Navigation are at the bottom would be mostly black with gray buttons which would be OK for amoled.

I would prefer soft keys over physical buttons any day.
Whenever i watch youtube or do stuff in landscape I have to be wary of the capacitive keys flanking the home key if not I'll get kicked out of whatever I'm doing. Won't happen if you have soft keys.
I have a G2 which has an advertised 5.2 inch screen and its using soft keys and to be honest the soft keys taking up some of the screen space does not bother me at all! Apps like YouTube or Hearthstone hides the keys whenever they need to use the rest of the screen anyways.

You can use LMT (in the apps and games auditing) and get the best of both worlds if you're rooted. Brief touch on your choice of screen edges brings up the soft keys. There's a non rooted, slightly less functional version in the play store as well - forgot what it's called at the moment.

I prefer slide to wake.

Precisely why I absolutely despise virtual buttons. Screen estate is wasted.

Turns home button into a capacitive button using the fingerprint sensor.
Paid version lets you lock and wake up the screen without pressing the home button. Doesn't work with fingerprint lock screen though.

This app is really nice!
But I like All In One Gestures even more. There you can use e.g BACK button long press for HOME and double tap status bar for screen off...

[Q] Anyone Else Prefer Physical Home Button Versus Virtual?

I prefer waking my phone by pressing the physical home button rather than using the side power button. Since the note has a larger foot print it's easier to reach the home button.
Also given Amoled's flaws, static images such as the notification bar and virtual on screen buttons would prematurely cause screen burn out which leads to ghosting. I've had the notification/status bar destroy my galaxy S screen.
Am I the only one that likes physical home button?

Nopes You are not...I too like waking it up via the Home button....
I also prefer the physical home button compared to the capacitive touch buttons. This device is my first international phone that I have used and I like it a lot better than any carrier's version I've ever used.
I'd rater it was capacitive like menu and back buttons. Would make the design look so much better.
Can't say that i like software keys though - i always turn them off.
Given I'm the only one who voted Virtual so far; I better post my rationale to see if I am sensible or really need to get my head checked.
First; why I like the physical button; no accidental press and good demarcation of where the back and menu buttons are (and the home of course ) I tend to wake the phone using the side lock button, because my thumb is on the side already, when I pull the phone out of my pocket (right handed) but I grant that when my phone is on the table, its much easier with the home button.
On the other hand I would prefer it if the home button was the capacitive icon like the menu and back buttons. Advantages of this to me would be that it would distance Samsung from the iPhone-like single button front but mainly because I like the modern feel when I used a Galaxy Nexus. There is something to be said for the 'light touch' approach to using phones. I Swype the screen with a light touch, tap icons and links lightly, back-button lightly. Then *crunch* the home button goes. I know its a really weird niggle to make but it is just personal preference.
edit: Reading some of the posts which were made while I was composing this short essay, I think I may have misunderstood 'virtual button'.
Yep same here prefer sometimes it saves me when screen is stuck

Physical for me as well. And I use Screen Off and Lock in the notification bar to, well, switch the screen off and lock the phone. Using the power button is soooo 2010.

I never use the home button to wake the phone (well maybe that's because I only discovered that it can be used instead of the power button after having the note for like a month lol)
I've not had a virtual unit to compare against, but I could see some problems having a virtual home key.
So, I voted physical.
My opinion goes like this:
99/100 - Xperia X10 buttons (slim, long, elegant, easy to press. Proper positioning of Back, Home, Menu buttons).
80/100 - NOTE's physical buttons (though the Back and Menu buttons should trade places. Accidental capacitive presses occur when passing the phone to others).
60/100 - On-Screen buttons (ICS/JB).
What I would like for NOTE-2:
On-screen buttons:
-Then device can be smaller.
-Device looks better/styling.
-S PEN will work with it.
-We can customize it with different functions, colours, glows, animations, gestures, app shortcuts.

+1 totally agree!
PS. The X10 buttons were great, too bad the phone sucked.
PPS. I really hope phone manufacturers keep disregarding the ics/jb onscreen buttons. It just looks fancy but is way less functional.
On-screen or capacitive. Tactile feedback reminds me of wear anf tear. On the Note, I unlock exclusively using the home key

I prefer physical Home button of Note / GS2. It is easier to wake up the phone. But compared to other Android which have capactivie Home, I tend to press physical Home less frequently, but instead press capaitive Back couple of times to come back to home. When I must press Home for task switching or when I have browsed several pages in browser, I press Home. So my take is - I like physical Home to wake up but would have preferred capacitive Home to go to home screen.

Huh? Device can be smaller?! You know that the result would be a smaller screen, right? In fact, if you want the same (usable) screen size, the device has to have the exact same size, even with CB.
I´m really enjoying my hardware buttons and I really hope that samsung will never ever abandon them.
- Wakeup with home key
- NO IN-BURNS!!!
- brighter lightning, even when screen is in energy saving mode
- partwise usable for other functions (see hyperX camera mod)
It is as simple as this....
YOU PREFER YOUR GIRLFRIEND/WIFE TO BE "PHYSICAL" OR "VIRTUAL" ????
The answer to this is as easy as the answer to that

Here's my reasons why NOTE 2 should get On-Screen buttons:
1) Position the Power button on top. Make it large. Make it clicky.
There you go, its easy to Wake phone again : )
2) The Burn-In is associated with the screen tech, not the buttons themselves.
This point is quite redundant/pointless. In fact the issue affected a tiny portion of Gnex users and the in-burn was associated with the entire screen NOT exclusive to the navigation buttons.
3) You do have a point. But changing the buttons to a white silhouette will make it bright and stand out. You then have the option of making it Grey so its easier on the eyes in the dark. Or red to save power. You can also set a "screen on time" for the Navigation buttons for how illuminated they are for what duration. And more options when in power mode. The possibility of tons of options makes this a positive thing, not a negative thing.
4) hyperX MOD is for the Volume Rocker not the Home/Back/Menu keys. Its still possible to have hyperX and On-screen buttons. What you will miss out on though is BLED: flashing of capacitive buttons when Notification arrives.
Solution: Notification light! (a la Gnex)
I'd like to make another suggestion: Curved Glass.
That way it molds around your face and bum cheeks. Feels a little more balanced in the hand. What do you think?

Recent Apps vs Menu button - good or bad change?

I have an S3 and have gotten really used to the left-of-the-home-button-button being the Menu button. I actually even like the fact that a long press of the Menu button gets me to Google Search. So much so that it allowed me to get rid of the actual 4x1 Google Search widget space hog from my home screen.
This new change on the Note 4 to having this button programmed to be a Recent Apps button isn't going to cause me to cancel my preorder, but it did get me thinking to how potentially annoying it may become. That being said, I am open to innovative changes and the idea that the Recent Apps button may actually grow on me to the point of me actually having a preference for it, especially since this monstrosity of a smartphone seems like it has the potential to take multitasking to the next level.
What's your take on it? Also, are there other phones with a similar Recent Apps button and, if so - for those that have experienced it - how do you like it?
Edit: And for those who are unaware, you can still get to the Menu options on the Note 4 via a long press of the new Recent Apps button.
Pretty sure all other android phones go with the Home, Back, and Recent Apps dedicated buttons. I'm glad they put Recent Apps instead since I use that a lot more than the menu.
I used the S3 for two years before the S5 and adapted to the change just fine. IMHO it's a non issue.
Sent from my SM-G900H using Tapatalk
You can always create a shortcut for the 'Recent Apps' on the Home screen. But you can't do the same for the Menu button.
IMO the Menu button will be used more frequently than the Recent Apps button.
It's good change IMO.
because google already pushed their app to not use menu button, e.g. in the google play. Device that have menu button can't use that anymore, I think a lot of dev will follow google way since this android, even it's open source, still belong to google anyway.
Just my opinion though
My wife has s5 and I hate new set up. Sometimes the app menu button is hard to find, sometimes you need to swipe from right to left, sometimes it's an icon, often different for different apps, in different locations, hardware menu button was always there to help with any confusion. I still didn't figure out how to access menu on home screen to create folder or edit page, and where is RAM/ downloaded apps/active apps/clear definition screen? It only shows RAM status without clear option and active apps, completely useless. I guess at some point in the future I'll have to get used to it, by then they'll probably change it again.
Great change

Let's see Calc + has no menu icon, hardware button doesn't work, need to swipe left to right for menu
Supersu has no icons, no hardware button, setting on top
oakla speed test no icon, settings on bottom
Google maps has menu icon in left bottom corner
firefox has no settings, no menu icon I can see, just hardware menu button
internet has no menu that I can see, without hardware button I had no idea how to access menu.
That's just a random sample here.
So, yes buddy, many applications I use have different menu setup and different location for it, as listed above.

in Firefox and Internet that's the only way I know off how to access settings (I'm sure there is another way I just didn't figure it out yet?) and I use it all the time to change to desktop page, clear cookies, history etc.
The only programs in my sample that don't work with hardware menu button are calc+ and supersu, otherwise even Google maps works with hardware menu button (I use older version).
The fact is hardware button was consistent and worked on most programs I use, without it I was often lost when using S5, since everybody implements menu's in different way it seems. People complain about millisecond lag on the phone, when using S5 I would waste 2-5 seconds looking for the way to access menu and that was after i learned not to press left hardware button, lol. I just don't like new set up and prefer the way it was originally, maybe it's just me.

Onscreen buttons vs offscreen. Which and why.

I personally love the off screen buttons, why do most people like onscreen buttons more? its a waste of screenspace innit?
I liked the off screen buttons on my galaxy s4 but that's because it made the screen look big, especially when comparing to phones with on screen. Prefer to use the on screen buttons on my OPO as it makes the screen a bit and smaller which is OK as it is a big one. It's nice to have the option though and is a thoughtful feature on the part of the designers. Just wish they put the buttons the right way around though, why put them the opposite?
On screen buttons are ugly

Yeah the shortcuts are enticing.. but still nothing that special. The off screen buttons can be flipped as well if you try hard enough (through xposed).
I like on screen, but with the height of the nav bar slimmed down (to save that precious screen size).
On-screen buttons for me. One of the main reasons being that the capacitive buttons are a little hard to press sometimes (the buttons seem to be relatively small and you need to be fairly accurate). On-screen buttons are lot more forgiving and I never have to press the same button twice (happens sometimes with capacitive buttons). Also, easy access to recents is another minor reason.
Always on screen. Off screen buttons have a horrible layout and you have to keep pressing the left one to list open applications.
On screen for me, I got used to it on my mako. Plus u got haptic feedback when you press them, when I tried the capacitive buttons, I kept missing and I wasn't sure if I pressed anything. Plus you can customize and swap them however you see fit. And lastly this phone is too damn big, so making it a tad smaller is only good. I don't have such big hands.
With the option available I use capacitive buttons to save screen space, but if I had a choice I'd say scrap the capacitive buttons and make the overall height of the phone shorter. For a bigger screen to body ratio.

i like both
On screen buttons is more easy to use for me
Capacitive buttons for more screen space but difficult to use
Hmmm I'm using offscreen buttons because all my devices before had that... (Samsung)
But as the device arrived, I said I use the onscreen Buttons but if there are offscreen buttons why I should waste screen for Buttons?
Gesendet von meinem A0001 mit Tapatalk
I use onscreen buttons for the convenience of shortcuts, with "extended desktop(show statusbar)" enabled. So i only lose screen if i'm using the buttons, and still have access to the shortcuts easily.
Onscreen buttons. I come from a nexus 5 and my OPO is affected by the yellow band issues, so...why not take the chance to kill two birds with one stone? ?

+1 on that reason, but the further I go the less minor it seems. I use the recents button constantly.
The dynamic button assignment on-screen is confusing at first but ultimately more logical. The extra buttons when the keyboard is up are helpful occasionally.

Best Ways to Use the Smart Key

It's pretty standard for any good smartphone to come with a fingerprint scanner these days. The Honor 8 has a fingerprint scanner with an extra feature. If you press on the sensor, you'll feel it click much like the button on a refrigerator would if refrigerators had buttons. You can assign custom actions to this button for press, double press and press and hold.

One Press activates my flashlight. I often go for a walk around the woods at night and I need to be able to see what's going on without fumbling around with my phone too much. Smart key is a perfect solution.
Double Press is set to open Snapchat simply because it's the app I use most often. It's common to have a shortcut button to your camera app but now I can launch straight into Snapchat.
Press and Hold is set to launch my Google Driving app. This app will automatically start navigating home when you launch it. So when I'm driving, all I have to do it press one button on my phone to start the navigation back to my house. I don't even have to look at my phone screen.

One Press activates my flashlight. I often go for a walk around the woods at night and more often than not there are bears and wolves running around. I need to be able to see what's going on without lighting up my face by turning my screen on. Now I can just tap on the smart key and have an advantage when I have to fist fight a bear.
It's much safer and I've found that I run over way less people this way.

nice and nifty feature.
best implementation of fingerprint sensor ever!!!!!
Would like to set the single click to go to Home Screen, but cannot find the Huawei Laucher in the list of apps (I'm giving it a try to the default launcher before going back to Google laucher).

Why putting a single click for home screen?! Home button is there, I will use it for flashlight

It's pretty standard for any good smartphone to come with a fingerprint scanner these days. The Honor 8 has a fingerprint scanner with an extra feature. If you press on the sensor, you'll feel it click much like the button on a refrigerator would if refrigerators had buttons. You can assign custom actions to this button for press, double press and press and hold.

really an awesome feature...but if someone wants to do this with his phone...
1. root your phone...
2. Install xposed installer(experimental recommended)
3. open xposed and install framework
4. goto downloads and download "physical keys mapping"
5.activate the module and reboot...
6.open physical key mapping..
7.set it up...
8.enjoy...
#you can use these keys even when your phone locked
One press - Pokemon Go
Two press - Dominos
Three - Directions to MacDonalds
There is also another use of the Smart Key to pull down notification shade, clear them as well as to navigate while using gallery app.
It's under Settings -> Fingerprint ID
With those features, it seems like the button can be used for navigation as well. I sure wish someone can write an app to customize it as a back button
one press: flash light
two press: none
long press: smart controller

I would really like one press to be the home button though ,hold habits die hard as they say but the placement of the button is perfect, is there perhaps an app I could download to do this?

Good information.
Rather than using the Fingerprint sensor solely for its purpose, its using it to provide more functions to interact with the device intuitively.
That's where the Honor stands out
I got mine set for:
1. Calculator
2. smart remote
3. torch
I wish they could bring an update to slide the page up down on chrome, surfing the web or sliding up or down on twitter app. It would be great

What is SideSqueeze?
SideSqueeze is an app that brings extended functionality to your unrooted (or rooted) Galaxy device, helping you to do more. It is compatible only with (most) Samsung Galaxy devices from 2017 onwards, although some people have reported varying degrees of success with Pixel devices.
Your privacy is valued. This app does not contain ads, nor does it collect or harvest your data.
It does not have the ability to access the internet, regardless of whether or not special permissions are enabled, as can be verified in the manifest.
With the introduction of version 2.1, SideSqueeze has grown beyond just squeezing and pressing! The primary feature of SideSqueeze is still detecting both squeeze and press gestures via the analysis of barometric sensor pressure data, but now there's more... This new update brings many improvements and bug fixes to the pressure engine, as well as a brand new module called "Plus" that provides additional functionality, such as: fingerprint unlock vibration (for both front and back fingerprint scanners), face/iris unlock vibration, customizable fingerprint unlock actions (start the camera when you unlock with a certain finger, etc), power button long-press, various volume button combinations, S Pen button press remap, S Pen button double-press remap, S Pen button long-press, S Pen Note10 global air override (wave your pen at any time to perform home/back/recents/etc).
Tip: If you are not interested in squeezing/pressing and would like to use this app just for the Plus module features listed above, simply switch off both squeeze and press detection. This will completely suspend the analysis engine, and leave the Plus module functionality intact.
IMPORTANT! For the Plus module to work (as well as certain actions such as: immersive status/nav toggles, rotation toggle), a command has to be run from a computer via Android Developer Bridge (adb). Instructions can be found from within the app on the Help tab. This step only needs to be performed once.

Thank you for all of the feedback, lots of little bugs have been fixed. If I haven't replied to you, I still might yet, but if not, it is because I expect to have it in the Play store very, very soon.
In other news, I have added two new criteria thanks to feedback from @ser8210:
While phone is ringing
While in-call
Also added an action for 9.0+ to 'End Call'. This means you can assign one of the triggers (like double squeeze) and enable its in-call criteria to end a call upon double squeezing. It also means when the phone is ringing, you could use the phone ringing criteria to set a Tasker task to end the call and send a text message to the caller. The possibilities are endless with Tasker.
Anyone who is testing and reading this, please download the latest version by using the link you were given, but changing the end to 'pre5'.
