I took my SM N910L Note 4 and a hammer into the garden today because no matter what I've tried
(and I've tried everything http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/im-bonkers-ill-pay-50-dollars-to-fix-t3169748)
I just can't get it to work. I put the Note 4 on the grass and I raised the hammer above my head - but I just couldn't do it....... it's not the money......it's the waste.............
So, I'm upping my offer. If you can tell me what to do to get my NOTE 4 receiving and sending DATA again (basically connecting to my carrier) I'll send you 100 dollars. The first person to to show/tell me something that allows me to make a skype call or receive even 1 email through my DATA connection gets the money. INSTANTLY!!!!!
Please read the thread above, all the info is in there except this. I have been trying to flash a different custom ROM in the hope that that will fix it but none of the ROMs I have downloaded will flash thru TWRP (even though I can backup and restore thru TWRP). I get an error message saying unable o open zip. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas please post.
A very big thank you again to all those who have tried to help me already.
I have a hundred dollars pinned on the wall in front of me .................. I'll be sooooooo happy to see it go !
P.S. I know that you are not helping me just for the money, I know you are helping just to help me out (and I have had so much help already), but I just want to make it worth your while too.
Is it the modem? Perhaps try installing the official docomo 4.4.4 rom for the note 4 via Odin. See if that fixes it?
I'm a noob but it's all I can think of. I hope it helps somewhat and if not then just return the phone?

I think it is the modem too, but I've re-installed 4.4.4 and 5.01 many many times. I flashed individual modems too. Nothing seems to sort it out. Can't return the phone - bought on Amazon from Korea, seller sucks, Amazon unhelpful, that's a dead end - I need to fix it.
Thanks anyway (I'm a noob too )
Might sound stupid, but have you tried a different SIM card?

Yup, tried that makes no difference. Have a look at this thread, it lists everything I've done.

load stock rom on it for the 910L with all stock CSC, do a complete reset, turn off carrier data in settings, select carrier network manually then turn on wifi carrier data bluetooth. make sure smart network switch is off. disconnect wifi and try it out.
and if that doesnt work ship me the phone instead of using a hammer on it lol.
Have you called your carrier to make sure it's not some sort of problem with how they have your account set up?

Yup I have 2 sim cards now with two different carriers and have spent hours and hours on the phone with them both trying to work out why it is not getting data. My only glimmer of hope is that although they are different carriers I have found out that they both use the same network (dohhh) so maybe it is specific to that network - DOCOMO.
thanks for your help.

If yes, you probably have some sort of APN issue with Docomo. If not, you may be boned.
IF YES:
Go to Settings -> More Networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names
Press the plus symbol on the top right, set the name to DOCOMO, set the APN to mopera.net, set the MCC to 440 and MNC to 10.
If this doesn't work, use 0120.mopera.ne.jp as your APN instead.
If that still doesn't work, have you tried a b-mobile SIM? I had this issue once when I was in Japan for some time - Docomo doesn't like people using unlocked, imported devices on their networks for some reason.

Yup, I think that it is about time. Hate doing it because Im sure it's a software issue, but I don't have any more avenues to go down now. But it will cost more than a hundred dollars though - I live in Japan, I'll be lucky if I get out of their spending less than 200 dollars. Still, let's see.

Talked to Samsung Japan today. They wont fix try to fix it even if I offer to pay - has to go back to Korea. The company I bought it from said it is user negligence, Amazon says it was working for 7 weeks so it is not there problem.
So, seems I'm left with a very pretty, extremely useful Samsung iPod. No phone though.........................

Seriously considering saying yes
At this point I'd consider human sacrifices, voodoo dolls, or crystals too.
Are you sure that SM 910L is your local Note 4 variant? There might be hardware differences in different variants that only accepts certain signal bandwidth for a specific carrier.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and will never be Note 5.

First, a little bit about me that lead to how I came across this...
I work in the electronics department of a retail store, and when the days get slow I like to tether my G2 to the wifi enabled tv's and watch netflix with coworkers. I do this on almost a daily basis and burns through A LOT of data.
Of course after a few days I get the text message from T-Mobile after I get through my 5GB of (fake) unlimited data and will be slowed for the remainder of this billing cycle... This normally results in my downstream speeds going to a trickle of 7kb/s as apposed to my uncapped speeds of anywhere from 300kb/s to 1400kb/s.
So I have another job that I work on the days off sometimes and it's running deliveries. I use the navigation app to get to where ever it may be for work and sometimes my GPS doesn't like to locate me right away. When this happens at work, I start to panic (I don't know my way around town for sh*t) and try every solution on hand I can think of. I tried fixing permissions then network operator selections and eventually the GPS will locate me function just fine.
So I have never hit my cap while working my part time job doing deliveries, and have never really used the navigation app until I started working there and this is how I came across this uncapping of my data while trying to fix my gps, I went into wireless & network settings, then mobile networks, and select network operators, it does some searching for a bit then gives me the option for AT&T or T-Mobile, (I always just do select automatically) and after doing this, my data speeds return to normal... like I am still getting downloads at 600kb/s+.
According to the T-mobile "my account" app, I am at 7.26GB for this month.
(I will upload screens in a second for the naysayers)
Something about this network operator selection thing has the ability to unthrottle me everytime I go over my data. Not sure what actually happens behind the screens when I do this method but just thought I'd share in hopes that it may provide some help to others in a possible loop hole to the (fake) unlimited data issue a lot of us run into.
P.S. Noticed that the speedtest app always thinks I'm in Dallas TX every time I do the network operator unthrottle thing, when I actually live in the Chicago IL area.
Wow, this seems like a great find. finally we can maintain full speed over the month. Gonna definitely give this a try once my speed gets throttled. Thanks!
Just for safe measures before people start saying it's not working, I'd like to just make it known that I am currently running on CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1-vision and using 2.6.35.13-UmaroV1.06+ kernel. Radio-26.03.02.26_M. Dunno if that affects anything in this department lol.
Also one thing I've noticed and forgot to mention...If I connect to a wifi network, once I have disconnected from it, my speeds are throttled again but doing the operator selection unthrottles it. This is the only thing I've noticed that reactivates the throttle but is still fixed in a matter of minutes.
Ill test this once I finish download battlefield 3 though I dont think Ill hit 5gb once done. Probably need another 1GB or so.
BTW to save data from navigating, you can enable a feature in Google Maps 'labs' to allow caching map data. After enabling it, long press on a location and tell it to cache, it'll then download a 10 square mile radius of that point and save it to your SDcard (you can cache multiple areas). Then it won't cost you data next time you load that map
Anyways, interesting find! I wonder if its because it kinda... re-registers your phone on the network, and you get a new address / spot on the network? Idk... I've only hit my 5gb once and I wasn't capped so I can't really check this often.
My guess is that Tmobile servers learned your usage statistic including your location, amount of data consumed, most connected APNs nearby and usage schedule. They then use those factors to throttle/filter the APN you are connected to the most. But once you "refresh" the apn list or the cache on your phone by searching for network operators, your phone is no longer "blacklisted"
But that is just my theory.

Yes, I'm on T-Mobile. But I'm on CM7 like you are, and CM7 already includes the app. Is downloading it from the market the only way to get it to work?
I just downloaded it from market. Don't think it was there when I installed CM7.
Yeah, we known about this for a while. Same thing happens when you switch apns (wap.voicestream.com for example). It just changes your ip on the network and will last for several hours or until you reboot. Its temporary but works good enough. Too bad my old one doesn't work anymore. Its all controlled server side now.

In the build.prop in /system, with any text editor, you just need to change this:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=vision (or whatever it says here)
to this:
ro.product.model=T-Mobile G2
ro.product.brand=tmobile
That's it. Reboot and it'll work just fine. I change it every time I update ROMs on CM.
The way I understood this: Once Throttled simply navigate to network operator settings and select your standard operator or reset your apn settings and you will at least for a certain limited time have unthrottled data?
At least as far as Berlin, Germany, network operator O2 goes: I cannot confirm that this actually works. (HTC Desire Z, latest Bulletproof MIUI rom).

That's what I've been doing and it works great. Might just be a loop in the T-Mobile networks but I thought I'd share in case it wasn't brought to anyone's attention
Just to be sure I went for the latest nightly and tried again.
Made sure that I got new ip's. But still nothing. I guess that o2 germany simply handles throttling differently.
Thanks for sharing though, would've been nice if it worked.

This didnt work for me. Im using MIUI Bulletproof ROM.
Although, right around the same time this thread was made, I went over the cap and still had full data speeds. It lasted 4-5 days I think.
I hit around 6.5 GB before I was finally throttled and that was around the end of Oct/beginning of Nov.

I basically suffered the same issue for my first 2 days with a new Nexus 4. I discussed my issues in the Straight Talk thread (ST). After I exhausted all the possible solutions offered up via my Google searches, only then I went the route of contacting Straight Talk directly. I could have saved myself a boat load of grief, if I had simply contacted ST at the start. Give it a try. I went to the Facebook icon on the ST homepage. Then, I clicked the Support icon on the ST Facebook page. It asked about creating a Ticket. I said yes and entered a short description of the problem. There were a couple of email exchanges and finally about 12 hours after starting my communication with ST, they said to pull the battery and send myself a picture message. Of course, we cannot pull the battery, so I just sent myself a picture message. A miracle. As I sent the message, the phone internet/data connection opened and my first MMS was finally sent. Note, I checked my mobile data connection just prior to sending the MMS message and it was still "disconnected". I think ST must have done something from their end, to correct my problem. I only used the exact APN settings that were provided with the ST AT&T sim card activation kit. Save yourself some trouble and open a trouble ticket. I learned the hard way. I love my N4 and my ST AT&T signal strength and reliability is great in the NJ, DE, PA tri-state area.

Rooting cannot break your phone's ability to access the network.

Wouldn't be a custom ROM. Phone came straight from Google and I'm the first owner. Will check with sim provider and see if its that.
ok so this appears to be a phone related problem. as nexus obviously takes a micro sim i tried it with an adapter in an old n95 and after that in a mates galaxy s3 and they register on "EE" both on the home screen and when you search for a new network.
however mine still appears as in the first picture and as below searching for a network. so the nexus either isnt setup for ee/orange/tmob or it cant read the sim????
this is running the latest 4.2.2 jellybean and has made no difference even restoring the phone to factory once.
anyone else using a nexus 4 on ee/orange/t-mobile in the uk and got this problem?
Ive also contacted orange (my provider) and it was them who suggested trying in another mobile but they also ran a diagnostic and that didnt bring up any errors.
have i got a dodgy sim card? (seems unlikely as it works fine in other mobiles)
has the nexus 4 not been configured properly for my network? (also unlikely as there must be thousands of people with a nexus 4 and on the same network)
Or has the phone got a fault itself? (bloody well hope not as its only 4 days old!!)
anyone shed any light on this as its got me really confused

I doubt it since I'm on GiffGaff where you have to manually enter the APN settings but it always said giffgaff wherever it had the carrier label. Also, as you can see the other networks' names come up fine. @OP maybe you could try manually entering the APNs and connecting to mobile data to see if simms is right.
Mine is exactly the same. I'm on orange. My SGS2 showed it as EE like it should be. This nexus 4 has always had varying strings of the '@' symbol. Been like that since I got it in November. I just tell people I'm on an exclusive network not available to paupers.

I have the same issue, I got a panther orange sim and put it into the nexus 4 and 'Orange' was displayed for about 4 days. Then out of the blue it changed to @@@@@@@.
I reset the phone but nothing changed. I took out the sim card and with no sim in the phone, I searched for mobile networks and the phone lists Orange, EE and T-Mobile. But with the sim in the phone they are all listed as @@@@@@@@.
Sim works fine in every way as far as I can tell, its just the network name which is displayed incorrectly.
I have a brand spanking new account with US Cellular, and a brand spanking new S5. My wife has a brand new S3. My son, the S4 mini. Any text that we send between us that is over 60 characters long gets split. If it is over 200 characters long, it gets split into six separate pieces and the pieces do not all arrive at the recipient phone in the correct order. I have tried factory resets, I have used stock messaging, and GO SMS Pro. Samsung has told me after a two hour conversation to go to US Cellular and have them fix it. The people at US Cellular tell me they have never heard of such a problem and they have no idea how to fix it. It is hard to read texts when they come in six randomly ordered pieces. For further reference, this has been happening since day one(about 5-6 weeks). I am at a total loss, and since I send/receive close to 250 texts a day just with those two people, this is a bit of a problem. I am running stock on all phones, and have no plans to root. We have been using GO SMS Pro as our default messaging app since it was first released, and have had service with three other cell phone providers and have never had this problem before. Please help.

for example use Google Hangouts or pre-installed one and check if problem remains...
i don't think this is a problem with firmware or network !!! it might be your SMS app

1- Does this problem happen only with your phone? Or also with your wife's phone and son's phone?
2- Do you have another phone AND/OR another SIM card from the same carrier OR from another carrier? If you do have, please swap the phone AND/OR the SIM card to eliminate the problem.
Ok, to answer the questions posed, as I mentioned in the original post, this occurs on all three phones on my account, on both the stock messaging app, and on Go SMS Pro, which is what we all use by default. I have not tried it with hangouts, as I disabled that app within minutes of getting the phone in the first place. To answer the other question, sim-swapping is not an option that I have access to.
as an addendum to the above, when I did the factory reset, I tested the texting before I installed a single app on the phone and it still had the same problem. I then ran my restore, and added all my accounts and the problem persisted.

It may be a network problem, not your phone's problem. Put the sim card into another phone and test?

again, sim swapping is not an option that I have access to.
Don't know why that is an option you cannot access, while you have a problem.
In this case you should complain with your service provider. It is the network problem.
AS I HAVE STATED IN THE ORIGINAL POST, both Samsung and US Cellular have failed to find a solution to this problem, I have tried the sim swapping thing with a friend, and as long as my sim is being used, the problem persists regardless of handset. I even took it to a friend in the wireless center at my local walmart, and no solution is found. All the settings in my messaging apps, both native and third party, have the split setting turned off, I have tried turning that setting on and back off to no avail. Then only way I have been able to send or recieve a text whole from someone on my account is to force it to be an mms instead of an sms, and I don't know how to make it do that all the time.

After some searching, I found a forum post from a different site dated 2008 with the same problem, but no solution was posted.

Try a SIM from another service provider (another mobile network) with your handset.

My handset is not unlocked, so it wouldn't serve any purpose to swap in a non-negotiable sim.

Both 3 devices has 1 thing in common your gmail id . Try changing your gmail for ones.there is nothing else to explain.the only thing that i can think of is your gmail is in all 3 devices thats how this issue is spread .because they do save the data of your app on google server. So g.ard reset the device and a new gmail id to begin with.

First response, I have already tried swapping sims with other handsets, I have even stated previously that I have done this. Second response, your logic is flawed, because you assume I am using the same account. That is not the case. Each phone belongs to a different person, thus each phone has a separate gmail account, and these accounts are not, nor have they ever been, linked in any way. Thank you for the suggestion though. Myself, my wife, and my son, all use our own set of accounts for everything that is online. It is more secure that way.

And, again, as I have already mentioned, I spent HOURS on the phone with the carrier trying to figure it out. They don't have a clue....so....not to be rude, but telling me that the problem is with the network is not helpful in any way.

Believe or not, there is a big chance that it is the problem with the network (SMSC I mean).
I'm working in the mobile network operator and we sometime faced with the same problem.
Don't tell HOURS because that does NOT mean anything. You should ask your mobile operator.
because you have the same problem on different handsets.
You can put your sim into another dump phone (non-smartphone) to make sure.

What does that even mean? I have mentioned more than once now that I have already spent quite a bit of time talking to both Samsung and US Cellular about this, with no resolution reached, so telling me to go back to them and do it again is an exercise in futility.
Sadly, I don't have access to any US Cellular feature phones. Everyone I know on the same network all use smartphones, but I will ask around and see if anyone has one.
Pardon my asking, but what is SMSC?

Hey everyone, just another thing I'm facing with my Note 4...
Ever since I got my Note 4, it's been having some problems with No Service, so I thought it was my old SIM card (that had to be hacked off into microSIM shape), but since I got it exchanged for a new one it's still dropping into No Service very often, like twenty times in 5 minutes. Then it seems to be fine for a few hours, but then it happens again a few times and so on...
Basic info:
SM-N910F
Stock, unrooted NK4 ROM with NK4 modem as there is no way to not trip KNOX yet.
O2 Czech Republic
In the same places, my S2 never had a single signal drop (No Service)—not sure if these two things are identical?
Questions/thoughts...
Could this be modem related or could it be something with the device itself?
Is there any way to test it?
I mostly notice it on H and H+, not so much (never) on EDGE, 4G coverage is rare in my area, so I can't say exactly.
Factory reset: could it change something in this case? I'm saving it as the penultimate solution, before getting a new one.
Thanks for your help.
I think I found a little bit of correlation between when and where it happens. Not really sure if it happens only when I'm close to some WiFi network, but I just noticed that when I'm in proximity of a WiFi network, the NO SERVICE is very often.
Plus, when I think about it, I haven't noticed it anywhere else, but in WiFi areas. Is the phone trying to tell me to use the WiFi?! Well, I can do that at home but nowhere else as I don't want my packets sniffed more than they already are by the provider...
Seriously, is there any way that WiFi networks could interfere with my phone's signal/service?
if smart switch is on, yes.

Thank you for the reply, I thought that smart switch was meant for transferring data from an old phone to a new one? Or do you mean some different "smart switch"?
look in settings. smart switch moves data from your mobile network to wifi and back.

Yeah, found it, Smart network switch in Wi-Fi settings. I have it unticked. So this shouldn't be affecting me(?) As the No Service happens to me when I'm on mobile data, in Wi-Fi range but my Wi-Fi is off...
no solution yet
I still haven't figured out what's the problem exactly.
But me and my colleague have the same provider, but she's got an S4 and when I had them side-by-side I noticed that both phones dropped to No Service at the same time, but my S2 didn't. The area is fine, signal-wise, there's even a mediocre 4G, but at the time all of them were on H+. And when they "regained consciousness", they were starting from zero signal EDGE back to full H+.
This makes me wonder, as it seems it's got to have something to do with some setting in both phones / SIM cards' setup. Both of them have new SIM cards and both of them did it even with the old ones.
I'm gonna call my provider's tech support to see what they have to say about it.
I am experiencing the same problem here in USA. I bought the phone from Amazon Germany, using it on AT & T network in US. For no reason the phone drops the phone call and goes into " Not registered on network" message. This lasts anywhere from 20 seconds to 5 minutes, then without me doing anything goes back to normal. I was using this phone in Czech republic for a week in January and had no issues.
I was experiencing no service on my Exynos n910u and I ended up reflashing ONLY the modem, and it's fine now.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
It seems to me like a modem issue too. I remember that I had to change modem on my S2 in order for H+ to work.
And since I can see there is an issue when changing countries, it would suggest it as possible... However, does flashing modem only trip the Knox counter or something? I can't read through the forums right now, so I'm asking politely here.
Anyway, I isolated the issue to 3G networks, because when I force my phone to be 2G only it never drops, my signal is green and seldom grey. No service never occurs, but as soon as I switch it to 2G/3G/4G or something else that includes 3G, it starts again.

Wanted to thank you for the input, this just suggests that the modem/radio is at fault. Because you relocated to a different area and it doesn't work properly with the bands there.
I had the same problem on my S2, which was unable to connect to 3G until I flashed the modem recommended to me by someone here on xda. But that was almost 4 years ago, I just don't understand why this happens, what's so different that the modem just wouldn't connect, plus the S2 was bought from my provider and it was branded with their bloatware and still, it didn't work.
But here on my N4, it's similar, but it seems to work just fine and then, all of a sudden, you're facing No Service message for a few seconds or minutes, then boom, you're back on.
I spoke with Samsung support today, and I guess they didn't even understand what I was saying. I'm gonna have to visit them and ask around, if they could flash the modem to something more compatible with my area. Can't use the phone like this, that's why I bought it in the first place - I need to be online and as fast as possible. But now, it would seem like I'm better off with my S2

Well, that sucks...
So, I had my phone serviced and they said everything was fine and that it's working the way it should.
Of course it isn't, the second I walked out of there I had a No Service a few times again, I already tried changing the bands only to what my provider has, didn't help at all, switched it back to all available bands. Naturally, I got really pissed. There seem to be only two viable options:
a) flash a different modem, as suggested in a previous post
or
b) get rid of the phone, which I really don't wanna do, but it's really annoying having to resend every second message (often twice), be it SMS or IM, because it drops into No Service...
ad a) I did a search and I was unable to find a modem thread or anything regarding modems for N910F, am I blind or there isn't one? Or am I supposed to extract it myself from a stock ROM file? (I don't even remember how to do that anymore, lol.... I guess there is a guide for that, but again, I haven't found it?! Or is it universal across Samsung devices?)
ad b) I love the phone but this makes me wanna throw it out the window
Thanks for any kind of help! I'm desperate.

I haven't solved them yet, but it got a lot better when I updated to Lollipop. It's got a different modem (BOC4) and it seems to have improved my situation. So happy I didn't have to throw the phone away after all.
To be clear, it still happens but a lot less since the update, maybe once a week, for a few seconds which I deem acceptable but not ideal.
