I read something on the Android Central forums that the display models have more space taken up. A few people who have the phone have said there is about 22gb free on the 32gb version.
Jeez people don't over react. Those demo phones have a ton of crap on them.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk
Whether or not the demo versions have more space used or not really isn't the point.
The issue is that since there is no sd card the 32 GB of internal storage should be 32 GB accessible by the user.
What comes installed on the phone should be in a separate partition from the 32 GB of user storage.

Literally every company does this, I know of no phone manufacturer that wouldn't count the OS towards your internal storage even though it's not user accessible.
Samsung didn't start this trend, why should samsung be the ones to stop it? Its a common industry practice, and everyone knows it and has known it for years, anyone acting shocked or outraged over this hasn't bought a phone in the last decade.

So if one business does some shady ****, its ok for all businesses? Samsung isn't the only one at fault but they stripped us of 2 of the features that made a lot of people turn to them over other manufacturers. The SD card and removable battery. Yes the os being counted towards the user storage is common practice, but that doesn't make it right. Atm I'm using my galaxy note 4 and my galaxy s5 n I don't think I'll be buying from Sammy anymore.

Well go ahead and move to another company, but you're getting lied to in exactly the same manner.
Also, it's not like samsung didn't want to add mSD support, they had it in the Note4 because it used eMMC memory still and the eMMC memory controller also has SD card support built in. So the same memory controller is used for both. The newer UFS 2.0 memory controller doesn't have SD card support so samsung physically can't add an mSD card slot, even if they wanted to the memory controller wouldn't read anything because it doesn't recognize the SD standard. Samsung either had to go with slower system memory (eMMC) or leave out the mSD card slot. Which is why every phone that has UFS 2.0 memory doesn't have mSD card slots. It's not because they don't want you to have it, it' because it is not compatible with the memory controller.
I personally would prefer faster system memory to make sure my OS isn't laggy. But hey, you go with whatever phone you want, enjoy your slow eMMC memory.

Don't buy it, problem solved. Relax.
Relax. Store models have the retail experience bloat on them.
Everything ever made with any kind of memory and an os counts it towards your memory. It's how it is, it isn't new. Keep your Note 4, the Note 5 isn't for you.

Guess what....you didn't get to use all the memory you paid for on the phones you have right now either. You got the shaft when you bought those also. Why are you just now complaining about it?
You guys are acting like you're forced to buy and only use a Samsung phone... I also was disappointed in the no sd card, removeable battery, ir blaster, etc... But guess what I got over it and didn't buy a note 5. OS using some of the internal storage has existed for years. Don't be alarmed but you laptop os does the same thing.....

14Go used from the beginning is OK for a 64Go version but for a 32Go version, it's nearly half the space. Not so good IMO.
But I will assume that if you buy a 32Go phone with no SD-card slot, you don't need to much space for your file.

it's only 10.25Gb, not 14gb. Only the retail demo unit has that much. The normal is still just ~10.25gb which should give you around 22GB.

I'm thinking about getting the 8gb model, but is the 16gb really worth $50 more? What do you guys think? I'm not sure if I will have enough space for custom roms and backups. As for music and other stuff I'm planning to store it on the cloud.

just kiddin.
Okay, so a ROM usually is 300mb-1gb. But I'm guessing because they're AOSP roms, we're looking @ 300mb-600mb. 600 being a really bloated rom. Secondly, games will take up a bunch of space, so beware of that (1-3 gb's). Apps will take ~1gb. The partition will be reduced cause of the Android ~2gb. And don't even think about adding music, you won't have room for that.
In other words, 8gb's means you're sacrificing something. Either apps, music, or roms.
Get the 16GB. Honestly.

I forgot about the reduced partition, well at least it's not too much more for the 16gb.
I will get 8GB. I just don't need much space. I use my phone mainly for browsing, forums and simple games. After 1 year, I still have 10GB left. So, it depends how you want to use your phone? Lots of music, HD games? Then take 16GB.

16GB all the way for me! The more the merrier is what I say! Take all you can get!
Probably 16gb for my usage...
Don't know if this is important to you or not, but even if you were ok with 8gb, a year down the road, you will have a hard time selling it seeing as how 8gb sounds ridiculous even now. Games and apps are surely not going to decrease in size with time Its just 60 odd dollars more for double the storage, go for it!
Realistically speaking, 8 would work for me. I'm getting the 16 anyways.

B) Don't have to worry about how many pics I take (especially with Photosphere)

I'm also getting the 8gb.
I'm gona get 8gb and let otg take the strain if 8 isn't enough, however the N4 only has to last me a year max then it becomes my spare having decided what hi end LTE phone I buy at some point in 2013, presuming the Mayan interpreters are wrong.
Same here,getting the 8 GB too. :fingers-crossed:
8GB would probably work for me if I don't use it for my mp3 player. But I'm pretty positive I'll be going with the 16GB anyway. Better safe than sorry.
I will get the 8gb as well. Considering I don't use my phone for more than a year, I wouldn't want to spend more than I have to.
In terms of resale value, the selling price is quite low so I would be happy if I can sell for 200s

I'm going for the 8gb version. I have all 40-something gigs of my music on google music so basically the only thing on the phone will be apps and pictures which are going to take up nowhere near 5/6 gigs. Plus I have 5gb of google drive, 25gb of dropbox, and there are plenty of other free cloud sites out there.
I was considering the 16 gig but for what? I don't put vids on my phone, I do have pics but they don't take lots of space, I have plenty of apps that don't even use a gig of memory, the most that I use storage for is to back up roms. Everytime there's a new version of the rom, I back it up and delete the old back up. I think 8 gig is enough for me, 4gig was enough on my old sensation.......

In all the panic I ended up getting the 16gb, I'm very impressed with my phone, I'm coming from a Note but the Nexus 4 seems way smoother and faster, got a slim tpu case and a vertical flip cheapy off Amazon atm I'm waiting for a Nilkin Flip which will prob be the main case unless Poetic bring out an Atmosphere Flip for the Nexus 4.
8gb if you don't hear music and/or have a load of videos.
I don't, so I went for the 8gb, I have 3gb free and 50gb on my dropbox.

I'm gonna get a 8GB and seriously I'm gonna have lots of unused space...
I use online storage a lot, which reduces the needs of having large storage...as the trend the world is heading to lol
Most storage is gonna be for apps, and some games.
Basic calculation: 7GB free -> 3GB for apps/games, files will be on dropbox/google drive. So still have lots of free space...photos/videos may take a bit but just keep them sorted and transfer them to computer or online storage...
There's gonna be like 3-4 GB free space that's never gonna be used...
I am getting the 8gb because I have no need to pay the $50 extra to get more space that I will never use. I have all my music on google music, google+ instant upload for all my pictures, and have plenty of cloud storage if I need it.

Neither - Just not enough storage - 32gb min it should have 64gb, how hard can it be?
It may be vanilla android, but they just don't give their hand sets enough storage.
Not a crapple fan boy either, android all the way....
I would choose 8 GB if 50$ is too much for me and I am not going to use it as an Mp3 player (even in that case, I could use the cloud as Google Music)
I think 8Gb's will suit me just fine.
16GB for me.

16gb without a doubt.

Just wondering what the past history of Google phones and how long it took for larger sizes to come out? 11GB usable storage just isn't enough, I want the phone but the lack of Micro SD to make up for the small storage is a big no for me as I use more on my current phone. Problem is if it takes too long the GS4 will probably be out and then I'll just hold off for that.

Second, to answer your question, the N7 32GB came out 4 or 5 months after the initial launch of 8 and 16 GB, maybe that can be a model.
Third, then hold off for the GS4. Android is all about preference and if this doesn't work for you, find a phone that does

I just read in geek.com there are only 8.82Gb of internal user available space in the siny S4.
I would like to find out if this true for all versions and countries or if this is some carrier's wrongdoing.
I have not received my own S4, so I cannot speak for myself yet, but if you guys can confirm this, I am going to reconsider upgrading to the i9505 16gb.
I know we can use microSD cards, but it is not the same for many apps that need lots of space (GPS navigation, some fat games....)

Well, my 16GB S3 (i9300) came with 11,25 user partition, but in the S4 it is 78% of that. It is a big reduction;
I would be a little less concerned if I could buy the 32 or 64gb versions today, but, at least for now, I have not seen them available anywhere.
Since they are charging even more for the S4 than they did for the S3 on launch day (699€ vs. 659€) and now storage is even cheaper, reducing the user available storage to nearly half of the advertised capacity (16gb) is outrageous.
I even could get the i9300 with a direct 10% discount (which brings it to 593€) and a 50€ gift card on launch day; This time, the best offer I could find was 70€ worth of accesories. So, less storage one year later for more money, that is what upsets me, such a great device with a cheap mistake. It is simply silly!
I would like to hear from others who already have their carrier-free S4 to enlighten us.

I am not nervous:
copilot live (europe maps): 2.2GB
Sonic4 episode 2: 386MB
nfs: most wanted, 1.89GB
google translator: 0.98GB
Real Racing 3: 1,17Gb
Dropbox: 155Mb
Google Currents: 145Mb
Asphalt7 1,61Gb
These are apps which decide is wiser to use internal storage despite having a 64Gb card installed. Since no sd card can solve this, this is the Samsung flagship and the rivals are learning, it is absurd to have 8.8gb whith the phone brand new if they say 16GB.
Maybe Apple can get away with those kind of things, but look at what happened to HTC with their Desire (and other models) when they made the same mistake!
They can make the best device in the world, but if this is true for carrier-free phones, I believe it is a huge mistake in 700€. Not because it means is the end of the world, but because it can be a real burden, because they chose to save 20$ in the BIM in a device they are selling for 700€.
I understand the want bigger margins but they should know better.

iPhone5 and storage: Exactly, they charge 100€/100$ more for each capacity doubling they offer and they get away... (but WE do not want an iPhone for things like that.
We like Samsung Galaxy among other things because they have expandable storage and removable battery.
But we shall not depend on rooting and tricks to get the capacity they were advertising.
In a side note, this not the same as a reported capacity in a USB drive or HDD: That is the loss inherent to file systems, spare area -where aplied- and 1000->1024 naming conventions. We suffer that in smartphones, tablets and iphones, that is NOT what I want to draw attention to.
I would like to find out which is the capacity in the unbranded carrier-free Galaxy S4, since I am waiting for my unit to come.
It seems to me it can be a deal breaker.
Spending about $20 on a 32gig MicroSD card isn't that big of a deal, i'd just keep that 8gigs for apps.
JUST ROOT
and use
FOLDERMOUNT to save to sd
Rooting to move apps to SD card is not the solution as many apps wont work if they detect device rooted. And why should we mess with a £500-600 phone like this. We didnt create the issue, Samsung and Google did.
rooting doesn't take care of app caches like Google Play etc..
The only proper solution is the 32gb or 64gb but these are not being sold readily. BTW the 32gb has about 23gb free. The UK S4 has 9.6gb free.

8.3 gb for unbranded carrier-free S4. Built in Samsung and other apps (Flipboard, Chrome et etc) takes 600 mb. So it's like 8.3 GB - 600 mb free to use
Well, My last phone was the N5X 16 GB and I really dont know which variant of the OP5 I should be going for. OFC the higher end one has it's benefits but considering the price is it really worth it? I plan on using the phone for atleast 2 years and I've never used any device over 32 GB memory. Personally I think the higher end model is an overkill. If any of you have used phones with storages over 64GB what are the benefits (other than the obvious ones). I plan on flashing the phone every month or so. Mostly I'll be using it as my primary device for testing. Considering VR is in the scenes do you think 8 GB will be more than necessary?
I don't think 8GB of RAM is necessary at all, but $60 for a jump to 128GB was worth it IMO, and the extra RAM was just the icing on the cake. Most companies charge a $100 premium for a storage bump alone.
Better get 8/128 GB version to be future proof.

No need to worry about that. 1+ will ensure it's timely death in lacking updates forcing everyone to upgrade.

For a sub $500 phone and an unlocked bootloader, I'm perfectly fine with them botching updates since I'm going to get the same from Samsung, Motorola, LG, etc. on their $600+ phones.

Oh, no doubt. Was just saying a purchased based on the thought process of being "future proof" doesn't make much sense.

Yeah but I don't think saying it's not worth future proofing your phone is a reasonable response. With Custom ROMs, apps requiring more memory, and as more of life just relies on smartphones, I think it's wise to get more RAM and double the storage.

We are discussing this on xda. OP has enjoyed very good support from dev community. So "future proof" does make sense in that respect.

considering rom backups, music and pictures i dont think i'll ever exceed 30 - 40 GB. What do I use the rest of the storage for lol. Most of my stuff is already on drive and pictures on google photos. I don't think 128 Gigs will future proof anything.

hahah sure but there are custom roms.. and who uses their phone over 2 years these days.
These are my questions too. I had to wait til payday to buy the phone, which they didn't hold it for me like they said they would. So now I'm waiting for the 27th. I'm not sure if I want the 8gb/128gb or the 6gb/64gb. I'm currently using a nexus 6p, so the minimum alone is doubling my ram and my storage. So I know that's all I really NEED. They both feature the same everything else. But, it's available with 2gb more ram, and 2x the storage. Sigh... What to do... I'm pretty sure I want the 8/128
IMHO go for the 6 GB/64 Gb vers. If you have more space u will find more junk to keep. 6/64 is more than sufficient for your purpose. If you are using it mainly for testing what will you do with all the extra space ?
I went with the 64gb model. I was about to order the 128 but after thinking about it, I realized that it is a complete waste for me . Between the fact that 6gb of ram is way more than enough and the fact that with everything being cloud based and streaming , there is just no need for the higher end model. I am using a phone with 4gb ram and 32 gb storage right now and not even close to maxing either one..

Yeah I guess I'll go with the 64 GB one.
Super ! When you do purchase can you perform the following test for me.
1) Overload the phone with 20-25 open apps
2) Further load Chrome with 30 open tabs, several with embedded vidos
3) Now Launch a browser from inside another app (A RSS reader like feedly or even facebook / twitter) navigate within this browser till u find a page with videos (E.g. on techcrunch.com), play the video.
Now try to scroll up and down real fast, and see how the touch response is.
Thanks a ton.

I guess the decision to go with base model 6/64 or higher end 8/128 should entirely depend upon personal use.
If your usual use case is operating 20-25 apps and 30 chrome tabs + games and storing tonnes of photos + videos, sure, go with higher end. However, my usage will not be as demanding as stated so will go with the base model.
This might sound crazy but for me, I simply preferred the appearance of the black one.
I'll be glad to have the 128gb ram - a couple of years ago this would have been really important to me - although with unlimited 4g data and cloud storage / music streaming etc. its less of a factor nowadays.
The difference in price points between the two is reasonable but the biggest draw for me was I wanted the black one.

I do, not exactly rich enough to buy decent pricey phones every 2 years. still using a 920 that i hope to sell on
I don't think it's crazy at all, the black looks stunning and a lot of people buy a specific phone because of how it looks. If I didn't always use a case, I would have gone for the black one as well.
I opted for the 64GB - I've filled it with the apps I use, I use Google Pics to store my photos online .... I have like 40GB left ....Didnt feel the need to pay more for something that I wasnt going to use ( ram or extra memory ) - also i prefer my grey
