Some annoying apps use lots of mobile data when the signal is bad. Is there any tool could prevent a specific app from using data when the wifi signal isn't good?

I noticed that my phone does not switch to any mobile network whenever my wifi strength is too low for Internet connectivity. I have to manually switched to airplane mode then back..
I googled around and found out that it is a common prpblem and Samsung is looking into a fix for it. Is it true?
Is there any app out there that I can use temporarily that switches to the best signal strength? This would help on the battery life of my phone too!
More info: I'm on a Sweden 4.1.2 stock rom (DLL1) with my country's default modem (AJL1). Will it affect the switching? Also I have frozen some samsung default application/service to prolong my usage..

I don't have a data plan so I have data turned off always(I use WiFi only). My question is since data is off anyway, will setting the option for 2G only in Mobile Networks make a difference on battery life?

If you disable mobile data, there is no mobile data. 2g is mobile data. To answer your question, no.

I dunno, but sometimes in different areas when i get a bad signal, setting to 2g only helps even if i have data off.. shrugs.

Umm no that's not the case. "2G" is GSM and Edge is data (of the 2G kind, there's also 1G which uses GSM but uses GPRS for data). This is why i freaking hate "G"s!!!!!!!
Using 2G only networks will force the phone to use GSM for voice rather tham UMTS/WCDMA (3G).
There used to be the case where using GSM would save power because 3G radios were power hungry (similarly to LTE radios now) but they've long been integrated into 1 chip now so power savings would be nill or very small.
Hi. On my gm-g900i (australian) s5 i have the latest XtreStoLite installed with the correct bootloader & modem.
For some reason at all times it shows 4g in the status bar, even when i am not in an app that requires internet. It will only drop to 3g when i am in a poor signal area.
Why does this not dynamically change based on apps used, as it did in kit kat? Have i done something wrong? I am after the power saving of 3g for background data, then 4g when using an app like facebook, chrome etc. This was automatic before?
thanks in advance.
If you're in a 4G enabled area, it'll connect to 4G
If you don't want it to, disable mobile data
I have recently gotten a new data plan (before I had like 500MB so I didn't even bother with using mobile data) and started using mobile data a lot more. I have found however that when I get 3G signal (it displays 3G in the status bar) no data actually gets transmitted, and I have to keep going until it connects to 4G or H for it to work again.
What can be the issue? I'm on EE, running the latest Pure Nexus ROM and ElementalX kernel with the Amanuensis profile. Thanks!

It seems on this phone I can only restrict. An app from using background cellular data. How can I restrict an app to ONLY WiFi?

Most of the apps nowadays need wifi or mobile data access to run. If you have a limited data plan then your best case scenario is don't use them while you are off wifi.
The apps only purpose for data is advertising. The advertising uses LOTs of data. I currently turn off cell data when I use it. Some phones using Nougat offer a way to disable Cell data on an app by app basis.
