[Q] Flashing my stock kernal

Ok, I'm a total newb to all this stuff, but I find it interesting. I've got a stock Tmobile Tab, love the thing, but want to know what else I can make it do. I'm trying to understand what flashing the kernal does...as well as ROMS.....can someone explain to me what the advantages are of doing it and how to? Or at least point me into the right direction. I've thought about rooting it as well. Thanks in advance.
I am still new to the Tab and there are people that know a lot more than me around here but this should get you started.
Before you flash anything you must root!! Rooting does noting more than allow you to add costume things and run some cool programs.
Think about it like a computer, If you set up an account for a kid you make it so they are locked out of a lot of things. So nonroot is like turning your phone on like a kid.
Rooting is like turning your computer on a the computer admin and you can do just about anything.
Flashing a kernel will/can help speed up your tab a little and allow you to run things a little better.
Flashing a ROM is flashing a customized version of Android, So they take what was on the Tab and make it more for the needs of them and/or the people around here. It is just a matter of finding a ROM that is best for you.
This has been a link I go to every day.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933400
It is a good list of what is out.
Hope this helps a little.
I think the best way to go is to check out two post already on this section:
Galaxy Tab - ****Noob Rooting Guide****, and
[REF] ***Galaxy Tab Directory (Bible)***.
Those will point you in the right direction and educate you with everything you need to know about your tab.
Other than that, please as away!

[Q] Need Help! I bricked my Sprint Galaxy S4!

So I bricked my Sprint GS4. I don't even want to get into how it happend. I was an being dumb and messing around with my rooted S4. I bricked it a while back but managed to find and install the stock rom and fix it.
I'm having trouble this time around because I wiped all system files. I only get the S4 logo screen when turning it on. I was on 4.2.2 VPUFNAE. I currently downloading the SPH-L720 VPUAMDC stock rom in hopes that I can flash it on my phone with Odin. I guess my question is...will I be able to flash that stock rom back on my phone without having to do anything else?
I know very little bit about this stuff. I research a lot and that's how I know what I currently know. Sorry if I sound ignorant or like a noob. I'm just really desparate to get my phone back. I'm truly greatful for any help I can get!

Hi mate ,
+1 with charris , as long you can get into download mode there is no problem , do the 3 buttons combo ang see if you can , flash stock and back into business , also if you have installed a custom recovery you could flash a custom rom that would solve the problem also
Thanx guys! Much appreciated! I fixed it. Just had to download the correct stock rom. Soo relieved!!

Real newbie help needed

Hi all
I know you probably get this a lot but could really do with some help.
Basically my wife has a nexus 7 2012 and it's become unusable now since lollypop. I have tried factory reset etc but it's still so slow. I have decided I'd like to delve into the rooting game and see if this will solve the problem.
I have a nexus 7 2013 so if I am honest if I brick it then I won't be devastated because she can always use mine so decided to bite the bullet and try.
I am not expecting a walk through guide but is there any good way to try and start this? I am quite techy but I know nothing about rooting let alone where to start.
I kind of understand roms and I want a basic one that will make her nexus workable again.
Any help on how I go about starting this whole rooting would be appointed.
Thanks all
Chris
Are you on 5.1.1? If not get that update fixed my 2012 & 2013 right up! If not, search for "nexus root tool kit". That's what I use without a hitch! But try the update first, it may just do the trick.
? Here there be Whales ?
Thanks and yea I'm on 5.1.1 I'll search that thanks
Once I root the device how do you put roms on? And what roms are the best?

An easy way to root is by using the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh, a good rom to try is chroma also mkernel works well with the stock rom. Make sure you make a backup before you start flashing anything .
How do you back up?

Super Bummed That the SM-G530T1 Has no Custom Rom Out...

Maybe im missing something but they have a custom ROM for Cricket and not for MetroPCS? Whats up with that? Is there one for Metro Or T-mobile? I have a unlocked Rooted SM-G530T1 With TWRP And No custom ROM Anyware I look. is there perhaps a cyanogenmod build that would work with the T-Mobile/MetroPCS Variant? That would be super cool. Anyone?

I have one built for G530T T-Mobile but.. I have not finished adding somethings to it yet. It's TW based and deodexed so you can install Xposed. The thing that is holding me back is not being able to restore backups when testing builds, as well as TWRP not being able to flash large zips since we don't have an official TWRP specifically for our device.

first off thank you for your work because without developers such as yourself we would have nothing and i mean nothing so thanks man. ok so it is so weird because i had previously ran a TWRP for a different variant that i thought worked great until i went to use the backups that i made.... it would only save the system and not even the whole system like 30% or less. i lost a lot of stuff but now im thinking there might be a connection within the grand prime.... its just very odd that you are having a very rare but simalar issue dont you think? come to think of it i couldnt flash large zips either!! man there is something to this because itwould let me flash superSU but if it was any bigger it would fail me out. i still have the TWRP if you want to look at it if it helps but im not a DEV but i do see clues here and there if something is not right. just let me know and thanks for getting back to me.
Hey I have never been a tester before it would be a good experience for me and since i have bricked this phone several times already and brought it back no problem it seems I have enough knowledge to do the job do you need a tester?

One thing you all will find is that the factory ROM with xposed installed is just about better then any custom ROM for any model phone in my experience because it more stable than custom roms. I think custom roms are over rated. I've bricked enough phones to understand this first hand.

you know i was just looking into that yesterday and i have to agree with you because although Cyanogen and the others are great and user friendly, (no disrespect because i have builds 10, 11, and 12 running on various devices as we speak) but they just dont give you the freedom i saw when i got lost in the exposed repository last night HAAHA! i couldn't believe that i was seeing the stuff i was seeing! You know when someone says " why are you getting apps and programs to hide your activities, i dont care if some corporation wants to look, i have nothing to hide". i just smile and then make an agry face and say " Listen to me clearly, it is not about having anything to hide, far from it, it is about me having things like the Right to Privacy and Freedom of Speech and so on" and a lil thing called the BILL OF RIGHTS EVER HEARD OF IT?... ..... you get the point. i dont think we need me getting into some political rant... but it just got me thinking as i looked at all those add ons in the repository, "why am i so excited about this? This should be in every phone right?" WRONG... Wrong because it has already started a little chip at a time just like it always does throughout history, our rights are disappearing make no mistake and until one day we will wake up and have no rights left! Maybe a Bar code on the back of our necks or some Johnny Mnemonic type crap! Remember that movie?... but seriously people need to wake up! oh and can you explain to me how to get exposed on my phone i think im doing it wrong or something... sorry bout the rant im a litte crazy when i want to be Haha!

The only one ive found that works some is TWRP for the SM-G530H ive heard of another but havent tried to flash it the link on here is closed so it says when i try to download.

Installed a custom KERNEL but it broke my phone (or I did something wrong) .

I really need help, my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has just got a red screen since i installed a Kernel and i cant use my phone at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The Kernel I uses was Super Kernel and I also had the Super Man ROM
Thanks A Lot Guys
Just flash stock boot.img from TWRP recovery and you will be fine if you cant get into recovery go to download mode and flash stock firmware with odin

Why did you flash a kernel? Do you know what a kernel is, and what is does? Do you know how to recover in case things go wrong? Nope, so you should probably do some reading before you decide to modify anything next time.
You probably flashed the "Flat" kernel. Download the Edge kernel and install it.
I always do a nandroid, and back up recovery and boot via Flashify.
Your phone will live.

Do you really think that people are lining up here to help people that have not read a single guide or anything? Do you think people are getting paid helping around here? I'm not giving him a lecture, but it's expected that you know what the F you're doing before doing anything. You must be new around here.

He would know how to recover from this if he had done some proper reading. If he isn't even aware what a kernel is, or how to recover, he hasn't been reading, has he? The solution is not to first flash, fail, and then ask questions. Read, read and read, then flash and succeed.
TL;DR: Read.

Basically sums up XDA. Also don't like people who go on spamming "HALP" without posting a logcat (or a last_ksmg in case of kernels) or any other info that could possibly help identify the issue and expecting devs to magically help them. People really need to read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
Although I would like to add that sometimes it's not totally the user's fault, as many kernel threads don't really provide any information regarding the behavior of the kernel in certain conditions, or the OP of the thread does a poor job at explaining which files to grab or how to flash and whether to wipe any cache partitions (or whatever the post-flash requirements are) or the requirements of the kernel. For example, I installed jesse's kernel and it caused my phone to fail verification on bootup, even when I had dm-verity disabled. Now, people should read the thread before flashing, because there's a possibility that someone else had a certain issue that you may face upon installation, but I feel the OPs should have a section called "Common/Rare Issues" in the thread where user-verified solutions to common/rare problems found when flashing the OP's kernel/ROM are available, so you don't have to search hundreds of pages to find a fix. If you look at the threads of some popular ROMs/kernels, they have one, for the same reason. In my case, I was the first one to face it, so I had to figure out on my own why it happened and find my own fix, that took me a couple of hours. But having such a section saves you time, which is helpful regardless of whether you're capable of identifying the cause of a problem and fixing it yourself or not. I have a "Common problems" section in my app's descriptions for the same reason, because I like to think from the user's perspective as well, plus I don't want my users to be spamming my inbox asking for fixes to common problems, it's more efficient to have a FAQ.
But yeah, READ, UNDERSTAND, LEARN, instead of just expecting people to magically help you with your problems.
