compiling your own roms

so... here's what i'm thinking.
how about setting up a vmware machine with all the source code for android on it, so that when a new version comes out, you can compile your own rather than waiting and then flash it to your phone. you could add your own modifications and any others that are out there.
this is a win / win situation as you get your own compilation, your own custom build and can screw about with the code it as much as you want as it's on a virtual machine.
you could update the android source code by pulling it online. and because it's a virtual machine, you don't need to worry about compilation issues across different machines.
i'm thinking about doing it - who'd be interested?
That's what I'm doing. It's FUN but to be honest it's quite a pain in the a$$ when you sync the master branch, compile, flash, and found out that the resulted ROM does not working properly and can't find any information about how to fix it.
BTW, I can hardly find the info on modifications -- most topics here are ready-to-flash ROM releases but no info on development. I did found some useful information in Nexus One forums, though.
Any suggestions on where can we find the resources regarding compilation and modification of AOSP?
well, my instincts tell me the modifications are "closed-source", hidden away from you. who knows what sorts of nasties are in the actual rom that's sitting on your phone. logging your every move, grabbing every site you visit, logging everything you type etc.
so, what's needed for a more successful dev community as far as i'm concerned is to allow the users to pick and choose what mods they want. this is an adp after all, and is one of the easiest phones to compile for.
so, if there's an active community compiling their own roms, then mods will perhaps become more open source with diffs / additions to the android source, which in itself will be better for users, developers and heck, who knows who might actually add it to the android source?
as for info for building:

[Q] some help on porting aosp to n3

Hello guys, :good:
I just started yesterday on building a aosp based custom rom for note 3, but I'm stuck somewhere and I'm here to ask something about my port session.
Firstly in the guides I've readed there says that I have to find the device tree and vendor propietary files. I have found something on git hub:
https://github.com/sibeveyh/device_samsung_hlte
https://github.com/sibeveyh/vendor_samsung/tree/kitkat/hlte
found these two binaries what do I have to do with these? Which one should I use? Where do I have to place it?
Thanks for the help
some help??

Kernel source?

Hi there,
New to XDA,
I have found a link to a repository called HermesRepos on GitHub . I am quite new to Android modding, so I'm not sure if it is what I think it is but before there was an repository of the same name which was a custom kernel by Dinolek. Most of this was commited by MediaTek a month ago so it looks like something official. But no one on the internet seems to mention this so I don't understand. Thanks.

Development on Essential?

Hello,
Just wondering if there's any development/developers still active on this device?
I've been toying with the idea of some mods and feature ports to stock. Unfortunately, I am limited to what I can do currently. (mainly repo builds because I don't have an appropriate computer. however, apk editing and porting is possible.)
I'd like to breathe some new life into this great device. So if anyone is active please let me know.
You might find some help here depending on what you want to do https://t.me/EssentialPH1DEV

[REQUEST] Help Update security patches for discontinued roms.

There are many custom roms for OnePlus 2 but most of them are discontinued for various reasons.
I did search and try but I didn't get enough information to do it myself as I'm just an end user not a developer.
So I would like to request any Kind Dev here to post a guide in the relevant forum to update just the android (not vendor) security patches of these discontinued roms to latest ones, so that users can use their favourite roms without depending on or bothering rom developers.
There are videos on YouTube to compile certain roms from their source codes on Linux machines in cloud platforms like Google cloud or Amazon servers. Some video guide like that for updating security patches would be much appreciated.:fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance to any Dev who is reading this.
Cheers :good:
