Stagefright updates. - G4 General

Just read that LG is planning on monthly updates for security reasons....
http://phandroid.com/2015/08/06/lg-...ey-too-will-release-monthly-security-updates/
Wish I didn't unlock? Or are we going to have those patches here available?

They better should enable bootloader unlocking for everyone.
Then each LG user can flash his own ROM and solve security issues very quickly with the community.
Nice announcement, but the stagefrighter hole is gaping and gaping...

you have unlocked the bootloader, so you have a custom recovery and could of course install any rom .
Sure at the moment there are not a lot roms available, but the official ones are however posted...
beside that, i don't think that unlocking the bootloader (and rooting the phone) will disable the OTA feature...

Not? On HTC OTA updates were not possible...
Yes those custom roms.... Sigh... I think we will get them if a can choose another phone[emoji3]

Or... Use an app with built in protection for that issue?

As I read OTA won't work on a unlocked phone.
But you can get the KDZ and flash this - you will need to root again though...

You will still be able to receive the updates, unlocking the bootloader does not stop you receiving OTA updates.

the bootloader itself does not change anything to the OTA process
but changing the recovery may block the OTA from working ... the phone may download the update but the custom recovery may not understand it :silly:
but most of the time, people find a way to create a flashable zip to make an update for custom recovery

I didn't try it myself, but people in the low effort root thread wrote it didn't work.
They got an error like "update not possible - suspicious root" or something.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62250050
I will try today and see if it works.
I could download the OTA Update, if it works I will try this evening.

Yeah they couldn't OTA as they had rooted, not because they had unlocked their bootloader.
OTA are still made available to people with unlocked bootloaders, just not to people who have rooted. At the end of the day you can just find the KDZ and flash it to update or make an update zip to do it from custom recovery.

That might be right, but as they said a simple unroot wouldn't work.
And BTW what is the point in unlocking the bootloader when you don't want to root?
I mean custom rom maybe but they are usually rooted as well for obvious reasons etc.

As I said one could always get the most recent KDZ and flash this and reroot. A working OTA would make this just a little more convenient...that's all.

Just unroot, uninstall SuperSu and fire up LG Bridge. Install update. Flash root with twrp. Finish. Did that yesterday.

does the new update fix stagefright?

On t-mobile it did.

Alright so I have a problem with the touch functionality of my phone. I have an LG G4 811 T-mobile variant. The new update is supposed to resolve that but I'm not sure how to update on a rooted device with twrp installed (update stagefrieght). I'm looking for a zip file and i have not managed to find it at all. Could someone help? Also if this is misplaced please devs move it or point me in the right direction to which my question can be answered.

and this for sure worked with you?

Yes, it worked perfectly fine for my LG G4 H815 unlocked! Now on V10d-EUR-XX. Stagefright is fixed. ****ing sim issue (com.android.phone crashes, does NOT restart itself) remains. Support is worthless. Found a workaround myself.

LG lied about that updates. They never repaired these bugs and now it has About 50 stagefright etc vurnerabilities.

What updates you say? I'm still on V20D since January LoL LG is a joke.

First, plug phone into computer, and install updater software from the phone that is on the device in 'Installer Mode'. Take the download on the PC, then follow directions below, and you can still have root after.

Hi again,
I installed the upgrade assistant in installer mode but for some reason it is not picking up the new NE9 update on my computer. See attached print screen. Very strange.. It sees the update on my phone to download though.:cyclops: Do you know why this is and how I can get it to see the update on the upgrade assistant as you mentioned?
Kind Regards
Can you explain why you want the update so bad? You do realize that rooting and accepting official otas is completely contradictory, correct? OTAs are generally what fix things like what towelroot exploits. If you accept official OTA, you will likely lose root.
But can't I just re root after the ota? I guess the reason I want the Ota because I heard of camera enhancements and stability fixes

No. OTA have patches for known security flaws as well. The flaw that towelroot relies on is closed after the new OTA. Meaning, no more root.
edit: in this case I believe folks have figured out a work around for keeping root with the update. In general though, if you value root and what it provides you do not accept official releases.

@ks3rv3rg I believe the links mentioned above provide a workaround for the Root to be kept after updating.
As for the problem nick, I can't help you there. I haven't personally take it as I see taking OTA's is silly with a rooted phone you can modify to be much more. Perhaps someone else who has done it will chime in...
Thank you both for your perspectives.. Plus, I can always just wait for a ROM that currently has the update installed.

That's how it works with all custom work. Once you're off stock, you're going to have to wait for someone to post a safe update/install.
Rushing in and taking an OTA is a very common way of breaking your build. Like what we see with running an OTA while rooted. Any number of problems can come up.
They could patch any number of things that would give you a very bad day.
With the support we have here though, we'll probably have flashable, safe OTA zips within a few hours of an OTA being captured/downloaded.

well i am from sony device..they release main update of android..and 1 bug fix, thats all...so we dont care..and no need to worry about relocking issues..
this is the first asus device...man they releasing update for every 10days..i thought we could apply just like that..but since they didnt gave unlocked bootloader tool ,i got these doubt..
and thanks for info..
so i must wait for zips which is modified for unlocked bootloader[if they trying to relock]
I honestly doubt they're going to find a way to relock it with an update, but who knows what voodoo they may come up with.
Either way, we'll grab the updates and get them ready to be flashed quickly. It's a simple process.
I highly doubt he will do anything regarding unlocking/locking bootloader. because:
1. last year they released their official tool to unlock zenfone 4,5,6 bootloader after 3-4 months of release.
2. This year when they launched the zf2 in US they hold contest and developer events via xda. Now xda is a place where no one keeps their bootloader locked. so they knew exactly where they are releasing and advertising the product.
So I dont think they would even bother about this bootloader . Maybe it is an unstable build in terms of their quality test.
Dang, and my 551 (2/16GB) is still in transit.
Was browsing the forum and this thread - has 2.19 been captured and saved somewhere else, or was everyone just downloading off ASUS servers for this OTA (when forced)?
I don't know if I would want 2.19 yet. Maybe to keep on my PC until the right time. That is, if 2.20 comes out and the BL hole is plugged, and those who were on 2.19 (and took advantage of the bootloader unlocking) still got the update successfully - if either of those two outcomes are false, I wouldn't use it.

Even if your phone gets here on a newer version (it won't), you could always downgrade everything and unlock from there. =)

Problem is they can't support any ROM that isn't official on the zenfone. They'll pass you off. Like most manufacturers.
These are just official update links from Asus. Not backups. Asus can shut those down at any point. Not saying they will.
See here for pre-rooted ROM backups:

one more doubt..
i think 2.17 is stable build from asus without the android os drinking the battery
now i have unlocked the bootloader ,can i reflash the 2.17[asking since it doesnt have the things which enabled to unlock bootloader] ...or once unlocked,we can do anything like other brands phone?

I downloaded the appropriate OTA the other night, so if ASUS pulls the file, I still have it and can share it on Dropbox and/or Copy.
I get the phone today! So hopefully tonight I get the OTA up to 2.18 and then wait to see what upcoming 2.20 has to offer. If we can still unlock the BL with 2.20, I will let that OTA happen. Similarly if we find out that those who unlocked their bootloaders can't take the update (at that point I will cry a little, if there is no official way to unlock BL released with the update ).
If both scenarios above are false, then I will apply my downloaded 2.19, unlock the bootloader, then accept 2.20.
Best one could do eh?

Quadrooter

So apparently our phone is vulnerable to a newly founded exploit being dubbed "Quadrooter" that allows for privilege escalation. Do any of you think that this could lead to root on marshmallow if used right?

Saw this today. Curious to know as well. Not that this might be any use for me anymore as I'm still waiting to see if LG will fix my bootloop issue.

That's unfortunate. I fear it may be any day for me. We're there any signs before it hit the hay?
I am curious how they claim to be able to gain root access on multiple phones running marshmallow. DM Verity in the kernel is supposed to stop a phone with modifications from voting, so I am not sure how it's supposed to work, unless it's only some form of temp root. Kind of corps of this will be the next 'towel root'. Probably not, but I could hope I guess.
I have the ATT model and would love rooted MM. Hopefully this vulnerability can be used to our benefit.
I hope my H815t could be rooted by that
I have H815T and it's rooted, bootloader is unlocked and running Genysis 4.3 with G5 theme.

You must flash a KDZ (for your G4 model) with LGUP. You'll lose root access, and OTA updates will be enabled. Or you can wait, and flash the KDZ with the fixes.

Actually I have a stock marshmellow rooted rom which I flashed it a day ago and OTA updates are enabled on that.
Another question, where do the updates store? On rom or some where in the recovery partition etc?
Why I'm asking this, I like Genysis rom so if I restore my device to Stock rooted 6.0 and get the air updates in september etc, will the updates remain on the device if I flash the rom(back to Gynesis)?

You can't apply a official OTA with a rooted device without a error.
And the updates are in the firmware (aka ROM), so if you change de ROM, you will lose all updates.
What to do?
Install drweb antivirus for check apps before install.
This is the unic risk i found.

If you are talking about the update.zip, it should be in the cache partition.

LG G4 - rooted, OTA update fails. How to do it?

Hi all,
I'm on the LG G4, UK version, rooted. I'm getting a prompt to update to:
V20g-JUL-20-2016
This does not seem to work with TWRP. Can I flash it manually, and if so - is THIS the file to flash like THIS? Can I do it without wiping all the data?
Thank you! :fingers-crossed:
I do not think you can flash it with TWRP. Why don't you use a custom ROM based on it? Whatever method you use to write that KDZ, you will lose root and the custom recovery. You have to wait for a TWRP flashable zip version, if it will ever be available.
For LG G3 was some kind of software with you can transform kdz file in a zip flashable file. Maybe it is a version for lg g4 also or maybe works for lg g4 ...

Hi,
You can do this :
- Get LGUP software and V20d kdz.
-Flash KDZ with "update" option checked in LGUP.
-Reboot your phone, you shoud have all your apps and settings.
-Launch the OTA update to v20g, boot on v20G.
-Reinstall recovery & root and enjoy
Assuming you can install a custom recovery on a unlocked bootloader G4, the list that @Aimixess gave should be the one to use for every official update. I did not root mine yet and I will probably not root it for a long time (because of the issues that could appear).

It is why I'm going to sell this joke of a phone as soon as possible. I don't think waiting is the thing to do.
After 8 months of waiting I have lost all my hope. Rooting and and upgrading remain complicated, time consuming and pretty riskie...
I guess the phone is not popular enough and there are not enough serious developers interested in this phone.
And now the phone is also getting pretty old. I don't think the situation will improve.
I give up!

Rooting is not complicated. I just do not feel the need for it. Do not blame the phone because of the hardware issues. I truly like my G4.

Hi!
Thanks for your message. That's what I was thinking of doing. However, the phone is prompting me to download this update:
V20g-JUL-20-2016
Where do I download this file, and does it need to be for the UK version, which is what I have?
Thank you!

I agree. Rooting is complicated. It's got hardware issues. Mine experienced the dreaded motherboard overheating where it would just bootloop and it had to be sent for repair. However, it's still a great phone.

You didn't just root it, cause root can't cause that problem

I think best way to update is by downloading LG Bridge sw for pc. It will update rooted phones. After update, just install latest twrp and with that latest supersu.

Thanks for the suggestion! It worked with LG Bridge - but I've now lost root. Any advice on how to root it now?

You should already have an unlocked bootloader.
So basically you flash latest TWRP think it was TWRP-3.0.2-H815. Then boot into twrp recovery and install latest supersu UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323. Clear cache and dalvik. Done.
Here is a pretty thorough guide, just use latest twrp and supersu. (I dont recommend xposed and viper due to higher risk of bricking your phone.)

What's the latest update we can use and not lose root?

I'm not well versed in this realm of rooting, but I've rooted my V20 (H918) and I'd like to update to the latest version possible and not lose root. I think it involves using some kdz file or something and flashing that, is that right? Let me know, thank you.
Wrong, you have to use this @runningnak3d tutorial to go back to root...but so far, even if you are on H91010T, you can roll back and root. ARB has not yet been implemented on this phone, so you're good to use any rooting method you see fit in this forum. Enjoy!

I think you may be responding to the wrong thread? I wasn't asking how to root, I've already rooted my phone. Also, I said I have a H918, not a H91010T.

Oops!!!! LOL! That darn 8 looked like a 0! My bad, bro! LOL. Late night!!!
You can use kdz writter to upgrade to kdz with new security updates. You will not lose root.

do not use anything kdz to flash... you will lose root! you need to flash a TWRP flashable zip to update and keep root

Thank you! That would've been atrocious. Can you point me to a guide that explains this? I'd hate to make a rookie mistake like I would've made and accidentally update the firmware past 10J.

I don't know what version of H918 you're on now, but if I'm not mistaken 10k is the last one that you can still mess up and still get root back by downgrading to an earlier version, root and then upgrade. any version after 10k will increment ARB to 1 whereby you will not be able to get root if you lose it. that said, the latest version out now is 10s and if you have root then you should also have TWRP. here's my guide for updating to the latest versions while keep root https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/rom-h91810q-stock-rom-twrp-flashable-zip-t3681312. looking at this now, I haven't posted the 10s update file, which I will do now... keep in mind that if you update to 10s that if you lose TWRP you'll be fscked and stuck without root, which at this point could be permanently.
EDIT: 10s is a go! original post updated with link. also removing the older versions from Google Drive to free up space... if they're still needed, PM

Hey, I followed the instructions per your thread and successfully installed 10s and kept root! The bad news is that I did a factory reset immediately after and now it keeps bootlooping into TWRP. Any idea how to fix this? Sadly I didn't make a backup because my microsd card was too small and I didn't have the patience to wait til tomorrow and go out and buy one, really hope I didn't kick myself in the ass and brick my phone. :crying:
Edit:
I was able to find a fix by following these instructions:
"I had this happen to me after installing TWRP for the first time. It would keep rebooting to TWRP. This was after making sure I flashed SuperSU as well. Eventually in a moment of "might as well see what will happen" I rebooted then held down the power button and volume down. Got to the option if I wanted to factory reset my phone which I did which booted into TWRP. Rebooted to system from there which got me out of the TWRP Bootloop."
I also set my phone up again and can confirm that 10s is still good with root! Thanks for the guide and work, man. Much appreciated!
