Need help to update Motorola Defy - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all,
During one of the many hours searching the world wide web I came upon this site and I hope that people can help me overhere. I am one of many owners of a Motorola Defy who has not done anything to it and thus is still running it on (please do not laugh) Android 2.2.2.
Recently I read an article of which the message was something like "Defy refused to die" or "Defy goes to Android 4. something". This triggered my attention and me too would like to update my Defy. To me the expectation is it is going to be from the stone age to the 21st century.
As I am very well educated and not a complete idiot in the field of IT I started to look how to do it. And then my job got the better of me and frustrations ran high. Because after days of searching, installing this, installing that... still no result. And I found out I am not the only with problems so I comforted myself with the idea that I am not the only idiot who does not understand things.
The question I have: how do I get my Motorola Defy from 2.2.2. to (for instance) KitKat? And then litteraly from rock bottom?
I am what you can call a professional process engineer. Companies employ people like me to look at the processes going on within their company and to draw up a report with recommandations which can have sometimes huge effects on the ones involved.
But back to my quest. How I tried.. there is no manual or describtion to be found on the web that describs all the steps that have to be taken to get to the desired result: a working Motorola Defy with a higher Android version. Not a single one described the whole process.
Why? Perhaps because of the assumption people would have basic knowledge. Or perhaps (what I often see in my profession) is that certain steps are accidently left out because the writer does not see them as part of the process.
Now.. my question is.. can someone over here help me ... and perhaps help many others... by describing to me how I can get my Motorola Defy with Android version 2.2.2. to say.. KitKat?
Already my thanks to those who will respond and will make time availabe. But for those who respond and try to help... please be aware you will have to have a lot of patience because I can really play stupid on order to get all steps.
Ps. If this is in the wrong forum please feel free to move it.

HSPL and ROM virgin no longer

Everytime I google anything regarding my HD2 it brings me to this forum, which I know is predominantly for developers, but says a lot about the genuine customer service teams, whether it be manufacturers or service providers. So thanks!
I don't understand most of the processes or jargon used here, but got some good guidance from Wacky Bannana, who has shown me where to look for answers as opposed to telling me them, which has helped me get to grips with a lot of the terms I would never have known.
<b>Using the sticky thread Walkthroughs and videos, I've just finished adding hspl and updating my ROM.</b> Extemely pleased with myself right now, even though it's simple.
I was somewhat put off initially, after reading so may complaints about sms bugs, dodgy camera, the fact the US is getting better specs etc and people wanting to move to Apple or Google, but sod it, <b>it's been fun learning all this and a bit of patience and appreciation for everyone's hardwork, and I can look forward to building on what is already a great phone.</b> I'd hate to end up like my David Brentesque boss who answers every question by pulling out his Iphone and saying, "I've got an app for that!"
Laugh it up dickhead, I can run two things at once.
Cheers
hello,
strangely enough i popped my rom updating cherry tonight too. i imagine this is probably not the right place to do it but i just wanted to thank all of you for all the help you provide here. i was dazed and confused and like harris everytime i googled something i would be led right back here.
i have a t-mobile phone with its silly restrictions and lazy software. since updating roms, if i didn't love my phone before now i want to have its child.
i'm incredibly grateful for the assistance. much more to search through - next step registry editor. thanks again everyone and apologies for my maiden post most likely being in the wrong spot.

BLASPHEMY!!!
Most problems you find here is related to cooked kernel/roms there isnt based on official magic releases.
Anyway if you cared to make a bit research before starting topics with questions there is answered a lot of other places, you might get a bit more help. The questions asked by you has answers in the wiki and the sticky topics, you even asked question where you already wrote the answer. It's important to read carefully and understand the things you're about to do.
If people can see you got a problem which is either hard or doesn't have a solution for it anywhere yet, people are more likely and happy to help.
But as far as i understand is that right now you need to get fastboot to work. So first of all get the SDK and make the driver working for it so you can connect your device with adb. You'll find information about this in the wiki: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking#sec02
Good luck!

Windows=limited potential
Android= OpenSource= Unlimited potential
What you're lacking to understand that the devs here are dealing with an OS that has only existed for 3 years. While the exact same windows coding has been used for close to 20..
furthermore.. you can not compare the problems with WinMo to the Android problems. WinMo problems where because of ****ty devs. Android problems are from stupid users who can't follow clear directions. I've done over 100 successful Android flashes, and probably 1000 some tweaks to my phone over the past 2 years. Never once have I had an issue. How do you ask? Cause I do my research, I know my coding, I follow directions. Android modding isn't for people who don't know code and who are e-tards. If you want your safety net go back to WinMo. Now go play with an HD2 and tell me how it feels to have a phone with a 1ghz processor only do 2.4mflops because the OS is horrible and then feel stupid cause you can a lame phone with WinBlows on it.

Just want to say..thanks!

I wanted to detail how much different the subsections are in xda, and how much you guys rock in this one.
Rant!-
I got jumped on in the mt4g section for posting a bug that was persisting through SEVERAL factory resets and rom flashes..for some reason i kept getting errors for processes for Samsung (on a htc..) And sign in failure for verizon (on a t mobile phone ). Even after wiping and re flashing different roms these problems persisted..so i detailed my attempt to find out why i got the bug, asked other users if they had experienced it (none had) and eventually traced the problem to the test rom i had installed. I brought this to the dev's attention by linking to my q&a thread on his dev thread only to be scolded that the issues were known, it was a test rom that i had no business flashing anyways, i should have read the thread as the issues were mentioned and known (which is why other users had never heard or experienced the issue??) And then the dev, on my account, pulled the link to the rom which angered other users whom then joined in chorus to say it was my own fault for not reading the bugs, when i said it wasn't in the bug list, was told "he doesn't have time to make a bug list for every test rom" (so where i was supposed to read that this bug existed i was never able to find, even after requesting to be linked to it).
The real icing on the cake was the fact that i spent 7 hours troubleshooting the bug, only a nandroid backup fixed it and thank god i had done a backup before installing it, and had searched extensively on Google in general and within xda forum for anyone having similar issue and no result, but was looked at as if i had wandered in, said "oh this looks cool"and flashed it and then proceeded to spam the dev thread with my problems.
Needless to say, I'll be selling this phone and not returning to that section as i am clearly not wanted there..rant over.
I want to say thanks to the devs in this section for being patient and helpful in the face of extreme ignorance, and to the users for understanding that not everyone on this site with less than 500 posts is a noob expecting to be spoon fed. I fear some of these communities are becoming to exclusive rather than inclusive. Transformer owners and developers as i have seen are very friendly and patient and I've gotten to like you all..
Even you goodintentions..
Thanks for showing that xda can be an inclusive community!
OK, flame on...
WRONG SECTION - USELESS POST! MODS PLEASE DELETE!!11!!ONE!1211
Ok, joking aside, I'm guessing maybe because tablet owners tend to be older then you're average high schooler we have a maturer crowd here?
I go by, if I can't help, then move on. No need to "flame" someone and get in an online battle...
And are you really going to get rid of your mt4g because of rude/inconsiderate people on the internet?
To join in on the rant.... READ READ READ READ READ..... so when are you supposed to post?
You would think that low post numbers mean more reading and less "got any updates?" or "Ya i agree". I personally only registered because i had a question that i couldn't find the answer to. Having been around forums for a while now (and i mean a long time) i have seen your situation at least once a year and sometimes it can be because the bug just totally pisses them off coz they cant fix it.
Totally agree.... the devs and gurus here are amazing. This truly is the place to be if you wanna hack and slash the device you have.
So thanks to all of you that make our devices so much more than we bought so that we can do whatever the hell we want with them.
Thanks again
I agree with OP. XDA has become a huge flame war where I feel that most people just post in threads to get their post count up. You have very few in here that will flame you for posting in the wrong section or repeating something that has already been posted(8 pages back).
Nature of the beast I guess. Next to head-fi.org this is one of the kindest sections I know.
It isn't my primary phone, and was intending to do that anyway, but the fact that the community is so immature and now hates me, there is no incentive to keep it
Oh well..on to the next device
EDIT: (One more thing I found funny, but no point in starting another thread)
While researching NVFlash and ubuntu/debian on the TF101 I came across this quote;
.. WARNING:: some/all TF101G (the 3G model) are expected to have a
different SBK. Until you know the SBK that corresponds to your
device, you *can not install Debian*.
To acquire an SBK, perform rubber-hose or black-bag cryptanalysis
on the associated ASUS staff. Once successful, please publish the
SBK widely, as (AFAIK) ASUS cannot revoke it from units that have
already rolled out.

LMFAO, I just read Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier..if any of you are unfamiliar with 'rubber hose' and 'black bag' cryptanalysis, google it
I agree so far from what I have seen in this fora. I have only had my tablet for about a week. But in deciding which tablet to buy, I read many, many different device forums to get a feel for just as many things. ROMs, Kernels, un/locked bootloaders, support and even accessories. I did the same thing when I bought a new phone. That is where I remember Baseballfanz from. The NS forums.
The thing with the post count is kind of strange. I have seen several people with below 50 posts, phrase an articulate question with nearly all the neccessary info. Whereas I have seen others with 500, 800, 1k posts with like you said, small blobs about nothing. Those just waste my time and I want to delete them, but I can't.
Similar to your situation, only my experience was the knight in shining armor. There was this person in the Vibrant forums who would just pounce on noobs about searching. I had just come from a Motorola forum that was by far one of the most helpful places I had ever been. That is actually where I learned about, well everything basically. Anyways, back to the Vibrant. I had gotten tired of seeing this person post the same replies all the time and flaming noobs. I thrashed him really hard about it and brought to his attention why they were asking these things (ever been in panic mode with your $500-$700 phone?) and sometimes the search button brings up more info that you need. You can easily lose track of why you were searching in the first place. He actually posted a thread apologizing and stating that he would be more helpful in the future (it has since been deleted).
Best advice I can give to someone is read, read and read but also give all the information that you can when asking the question. YOU may not think it is relevant, but I might.

[Q] spy on someone's Samsung?

Hello, I am new to this forum and I came here to ask if there is any possibility for me to spy on my man his phone. I've tried Google, but all what I found is very priced spy software. Ive checked several threads before making this thread but I couldn't find answers to my questions. I hope I'm not at the wrong section or forum for this!
Also, please don't think I'm paranoid. I have all the reasons not to trust him because he lied alot to me, though he claims that he has never cheated on me.
I either want to bust him with this or be able to trust him after spying on him and nothing could be found.
I don't know alot about android phones since I have a iPhone and never had a android (my man has a Samsung, not sure which one but I can find this out if necassary, its quite new and has the size of a tablet so I'm guessing it's a note 3?)
His phone is not rooted. I rather not do that. I don't want to mess up his phone and as far as I know you can tell if your phone is rooted by looking at your downloads. Unless he agrees with me rooting his phone this could be an option, but I can't give him any good reasons why. Our computer broke recently, so rooting with a computer is not possible.
And finally I would like to state what features I'd love
Browser history logs
Logs of In and out going calls
Gps tracking
Recording calls*
Recording environment*
Make photo/screenshot*
Acces to images
Whatssap messages*
(*) I think that the ones with * really require a rooted phone, but I can always try, right..? Maybe there is someone here with a solution for me
Also, I'm not familiar with hacking, sorry! But if you are willing to help me with this, try to avoid hacking language please! (I dont know what a rom is or flashing for example, not being English makes it harder for me)
I don't mind donating!
Thank you in advance for replying!
If you've checked similar threads you would also have come across several moderators informing the posters that we do not support these activities.
If you feel you can't trust him, what the hell are you still doing in that relationship? Trust and respect are the very foundations of a healthy relationship. If those are gone, do yourself a favour, get the hell out.
Ohw! I haven't noticed that, I saw developers having threads that were offering these kinds of features. If that is the case then a mod can close my thread.
I agree with you that trust one of the most important things is in a relationship, but ending my relationship with him isn't that easy, we have a kid. I don't mind that he sometimes lies to me for his own good, I just want to find out if he's cheating, because if he is, I'm grabbing my stuff and leave him.
Looks like you should find some time and sit down with him to discuss the relationship issues between you and him... spying on him is one sure fire way to end the relationship.
Anyways thread closed.

Rooted Lollipop, want to try Marshmallow.

Hey all, I've spent a couple hours sifting through these pages to find an answer I cannot see. Or, I'm not reading correctly.
I am currently running Jasmine Rom on my rooted/unlocked OF1 Note 3. After several months of everything working fine but slow here and there, I would like to try one of two things. If anyone has some insight (Google certainly doesn't ) that may or may not help me, I'd very much appreciate you...
1- Is unrooting as lollipo to update to marshmallow a good or bad idea? Why?
2- If good, could you point me to a page that I don't have to read 700 posts to find clear instructions to do so?
3- If bad, I will stick with what I have...BUT, I'd really like to get rid of the bloatware (permanently, if possible). Is this possible? NOTE: I've sifted through countless pages of safe to remove bloat, so I'm asking if there's a way to do this upon fresh rom installation?
4- I love this place. I've rooted many a phone with all of your help. I must say that this note 3 vzw section is a WRECK. How can non-devs possibly sort through all this to find working answers? I'm legit asking, not being a smartass...there's active threads from 1983, and how's a regular Joe who wants to play with his toys too supposed to make sense of the endless this-one-works no-it-doesn't mess?
I'm sincerely seeking some final, working answers to the above questions, any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
There is no "update to marshmallow" AFAIK.
OF1 is Lolipop.
XDA has zero threshold to entry, so the postings here are from both geniuses and idiots. You get to sort through them.
Postings are made while the phones are in play - which is to say while stock firmware is changing constantly, and devs and hackers are making changes, revising their stuff and learning new tricks.
So in addition to info which is correct - and stays correct, there is also information that becomes incorrect with new software... or never was correct in the first place.
So yeah, XDA is a mess. But you are missing the point - that it's a hot mess.
Your expectation of perfectly curated data, 100% correct and up-to-date instructions that minimize your time (at the expense of others, naturally) is unreasonable for this simple reason: it doesn't exist anywhere else.
So... step up or step out.
All this stuff is optional behavior. If you don't have time for it, well... then you don't have time for it.
If you want to try marshmallow on your device flash this rom using TWRP : [ROM][CM13][6.0.1_r43][VZW][OTA-Updates] Temasek's UNOFFICIAL.
I'm using version V10.8 on my unlocked OF1 Note 3 and everything works, here is the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...opment/rom-temaseks-unofficial-build-t3364382

Thank you for the reply. I must say, though, there's a clear difference between everything being perfectly organized to my taste and organized for the everyman who doesn't have all day to sort through everything in the forum on a particular phone. Im not demanding anything, nor am I accusing anyone of laziness or ignorance. There's wasn't anything implying anyone should do anything. Rather, a question was posed to understand the processes. I get the point of this forum, and more to the point, I APPRECIATE this forum. But I will say that at some point clean up might be a good idea. That's an opinion, not a demand. It is silly to me how unkempt this PARTICULAR part of XDA is.
That said, I will continue to use it happily, messy, hot, or otherwise, and I appreciate everyone's work on these devices for the everyman to experience the full range of possibilities with our devices.
Thanks for the answers.

Awesome, I will check out it.
Forgive my tone on my original post, XDA. I believe I came across as *****y, and I didn't mean any offense.
