Auto rotate suddenly stopped working! Help! - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I only noticed the issue a few days ago. I turn on my tablet (running 5.1.1 stock, non rooted) and it locks itself into portrait if held in that position and likewise for landscape. Now when I attempt to auto-rotate the screen the usual way, nothing happens.
Any apps that use a forced orientation setting like Google Books (which I have set to forced portrait) will force it from landscape into portrait mode and remain that way, even after closing the app. Likewise for apps that force portrait to landscape.
I've tried checking that auto-rotate was enabled, tested. That it wasn't enabled, checked. Re-enabled it and checked.
Tried the same process above, but with a reboot in between each step.
Tried a few apps that use the accelerometer and found that it appears to be working fine:
GPS Status & Toolbox by MobiWIA - EclipSim - full range of movement detected.
Accelerometer Sensor by Victor Dmitrienko - full range of movement detected.
Sky Map by Google - full range of movement detected.
Heard people on Nexus 7 had solved it by disabling Google Now and Location Services. Tried both of these, rebooting the tablet each time. No fix.
Tried factory resetting the tablet - Backup & reset > Factory data reset.
Nothing seems to fix the issue. It only seems to have arisen since the recent 5.1.1 update. Anyone got any suggestions on what else I can try to fix this? Would I be right in assuming, that as other software apps seem to suggest the accelerometer is working, that this is an OS issue and NOT hardware?
I've become so despondent, I'm considering donating my tablet to my parents and looking for a replacement.
Thanks in advance for anyone that can help resolve my issue.
A desperate N10 user.

i don't think it's a problem with the 5.1.1 update as i had this problem on kitkat, it was working fine for ages then suddenly out of the blue it wouldn't auto rotate. then when i got the ota update for lollipop the issue went away and it has never come back even after the other lollipop updates. i never could find a solution to it so i can't really help you, i just got lucky that it went away by itself

Hi,
Can you try reflashing system firmware? It seems a system issue and this might help solving it.
All the best,

[Q] Wi-fi connectivity issues

After a recent snafu in trying to remove root from my Nexus 7 tablet and installing the 4.3 update I think there are issues with with it's ability to keep a constant wireless connection, Juice Defender be damned as way before root and even during root I was able to maintain a flawless connection although I think the issue may have arisen during my installation of a cracked google play store app.
This was a couple months ago though.
However I decided rooting wasn't worth it and wanted to update to the new 4.3, this is where the snafu occurs, unrooting wasn't a problem at all, nor was flashing stock recovery, but the process of installing 4.3 was since even performing the update in my settings wasn't working, it would download and my tablet would restart and try to apply the update but soon after it would error out and I had to perform a hard shut down.
After that it would boot like normal and there were no issues, other than the update failing to apply.
So I decided to try and apply the update manually and as it turns out, I was attempting to install the update for the mobile version of the tablet instead of the wi-fi only one that I have so it didn't install correctly and simply erased all data on my tablet except luckily for the devices fastboot mode.
Seeing that I installed the correct 4.3 factory image and this is where the wi-fi issues come into play (I wanted to explain in as much detail as I could that might shed light on my current wi-fi situation).
The tablet booted up seemingly normally, taking a bit longer than it should have to me and upon getting to the glowing X before the main screen it suddenly reset it's self and then booted up correctly; so I finished the set up process after linking my wi-fi up but while going through each app that uses wi-fi I started off with games like Happy Street and The Sims Freeplay which worked normally.
Then I got go my Bank of America app and it's the one app (besides the Play Store on occasion), that didn't work at all, instead it just timed out, there's a screenshot so you can verify for yourselves.
You can clearly see I do have an established connection but this is the only app that fails to work after the update, again besides the Play Store but I've removed root and the crack is no longer installed, not that it would work anyway without root access but it doesn't concern me as much since it'll connect after force closing the app and starting it again.
So that's my issue in detail, is there something that I messed up that's preventing the device from maintaining a connection? Or do I simply need to re-install the factory image to restore connections?
Hmm...I've been having some trouble with WiFi as well.
I was running CM10 and then installed the 4.3 factory image over that. That's where the problem started. Since then I've tried the 4.2 factory image, Ubuntu Touch, and I'm now back on CM10, but the issue remains that my WiFi seems to stop working even though the icon in the notification bar says that it's connected.

Well the weird thing is, is that every other app seems to work but that one where it just times out, I'm going to try just re-installing the update and see if that helps things.
Edit: After backing everything up I decided to re-install the 4.3 update and after downloading the Bank of America app it started up instantly, froze for a moment and allowed me to sign in.
I closed out of the app and tried again to check and after 3 attempts to sign in it worked each time, I think the re-installation did the trick.

Orientation / Rotate Problem with my Nexus 4

Every couple of hours my orientation get stuck on portrait. it means I can't play games that uses movement, when take a picture it doesn't recognize that I took it horizontal, my launcher stops rotate and also youtube and the image gallery. you got the picture.
downloaded "android sensor box". nothing happens in "accelerometer" and "orientation".
on CPU-Z sensor test it seems to work (values changes).
restart my phone fix the problem but it stops working again after a couple of hours.
I restart my phone 5 times a day because of this issue.
tried reset using GPS Status --> Tools. didn't work.
tried starting my device on a flat surface till lock screen. didn't work.
any idea what to do? my phone is 2 months old.
thanks.
I found what caused the problem
Just came back to update that I found out what cause this issue.
After full reset to my device, I've noticed that the problem started after installing a certain application from the play store.
It's an Israeli app called "Isracard" (to manage your credit card account).
When I've uninstalled it this problem solved. Reinstall it again brought the problem back.
I've notified the developers. Pretty sure this issue is unique to nexus 4 users because it's a well known app.
So for a couple of weeks everything is working fine.
If anyone else has this issue just try to locate which app caused this mass by enabling / disabling apps one by one and change rotation setting under display settings after each time.

Freezing and rebooting on lockscreen after screen rotate

Hi Guys,
I'm not sure if this is related to 4.4.2 or its a hardware issue, I've only noticed this issue this week.
When I wake my N10 and if I flip the screen around before unlocking it, it will hang and reboot.
It happens every time after putting the N10 to sleep for a few mins.
If I unlock it without rotating then flipping the screen around its fine.
Has anyone else had this issue? Anyway to fix it?
Hi
Just did it and it worked fine for me, I'm also running 4.4.2... You may want to try a factory reset before issuing this as a hardware problem

on the same boat
Same behavior exactly observed on my tablet, during last week. I suspect something went wrong with the newest updates.
Random crashes with reboots, mainly when rotating on lock screen. Tried a factory reset, however, problem still persists.
Never had a single problem with my Nexus until now, worked like a charm. Also, I have not installed new Apps which to blame for this problem.
At the moment I'm trying things like disabling rotation or pattern unlocking, will see if something works.
I think I've seen this as well, on KOT49H. Not sure exactly how to reproduce it, but it's happened a few times.
Do you have modded/unlocked system? My nex is working like never before. It is twice as smooth and stable as it was on 4.3
I have never rooted/moded this tab and never ever had issues with it...
tapped from my nex
Well, disabling rotation seems to improve the issue a little bit, the random reboots are still there, but just less frequent.
Yesterday I had a couple of hangs-reboots doing simple tasks, like checking GMAIL or interacting with Google Currents widget.
In my opinion, this is not a hardware problem, it is, somehow, related with the 4.4.2. KOT49H update. My N10 worked perfect until this last update.
Ironically, I read somewhere that this update fixes the random reboot problem in a lot of faulty tablets. In my particular case, the "fix" seems to trigger the issue in my tablet
It is worth mentioning that my system is not modded or unlocked.
Updating situation ...
During the last week I have used the N10 With the automatic rotation disabled, in landscape mode. Non a single reboot.
This afternoon I just enabled automatic rotation again and the tablet rebooted itself almost instantly, at the second orientation change.
So, IMHO, This issue is only rotation-based, nothing to do with the lockscreen. It is kind of annoying.
Any help?

Hi,
Do you mind sharing a logcat when it happens? It would help a lot to see what's causing the problem.

I never had this problem, but I just tried rotating twice before unlocking, and sure enough that does it.
There are still so many things that cause this device to reboot. I love the hardware, but god is it ever unstable
This is, I hope, my final update regarding this situation..
Well, It is kind of embarrassing to inform that the problem is, apparently, gone. I didnĀ“t do anything to solve it.
So, it looks like some app or widget was causing the instability, and it must be fixed now via a recent update. Honestly I have no clue about who the culprit was..
Thanks, anyway, for your comments and support, and happy new year
Same issue
So it seems I have the same issue too, except I have a Galaxy S4 Touchwiz 4.3. Anytime I go into landscape mode, boom it freezes and reboots. If I disable rotation, then it'll just keep randomly freezing throughout the day. Never happened before, everything was happy go lucky and then I don't know what happened. I reinstalled kernels, took off recent apps I may have installed, tried a different modem, nada... This is a pain. Anyone else with similar issues other than OP?

Ive seen this many times with 4.4.2 and 3. Now with 4 it likely fixed.
I had screen not rotating, I did a dalvik wipe and a cache wipe and haven't had a problem.

Fixing Screen Rotation Problem after 5.0 upgrade

Alright, for those of us who HAVE upgraded, both those who have the problem with screen rotation and not.. Can we collaborate to get this fixed?
My first thought was search the phone for a file with a setting changed somewhere.
I used Fx to search the phone and find things with "rotat" in the name (rotation) and I only got 3.
persist.sys.screen.rotation.Off (value inside = -1)
com.sec.android.smartface.smart_rotation.xml (see value below)
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<permissions>
<feature
name-"com.sec.android.smartface.smart_rotation" />
</permissions>
stayrotation.jar (opened and all I see is computer gibberish)
Anyone out there have suggestions? @elliwigy suggestions?
Does anyone have a copy of the first 2 files from 4.4.4 that they can share copies of or post screen shots of for reference?

my rom rotation has been working for me 100% and i flashed stock ota, muniz build and my roms like 10+ times lol dunno how it was before but mine rotates?
Sent from my SM-G900V using XDA Free mobile app
Mine was rotating initially after flashing the rooted 5.0 rom. However, after some debloating, it has stopped working. I'll try troubleshooting when I have access to a PC to flash, but that will be a couple of days.
I finally got home and wiped my phone. I flashed KitKat, re-rooted and then upgraded to Lollipop again. I did a clean install this time and have been slowly adding my apps from the play store and restoring data from Titanium Backup. I have modified my platform.xml for TiBu, installed AdAway and started freezing SDM & KNOX one at a time. So far so good. Let's hope it stays that way. I haven't done any debloating yet.

I have no idea. I flashed Muniz myself, and idk why it won't work.. Weird.
Shouldn't I be able to do a Backup with TiBu and "Factory Reset" to see if it will work?

Same happened to me. I only debloated the verizon stuff and google play movies, books, play music, newstand, hangouts, google+, and nfl mobile. I even cleared davik after but Screen rotation stops working.
I reinstalled the rom again and screen rotation is working again. This time i just froze all the apps listed above with titanium backup and screen rotation is working now. I am afraid to debloat now. I even changed the boot and shutdown animation and shut off start up sound and camera shutter sounds and screen rotation still working
Used to debloat all the same stuff in kit kat. Not sure what the issue is as none of that stuff is OS related so not sure why it affecting the screen rotation.
----------------------------------------------------------
Update!!!!
reinstalled lollipop and used jrkruse debloat zip and screen rotation working and rom is debloated now!
I am on 4.4.4 NK7 and screen rotation isnt working. I debloated too fast to track which one disabled screen rotation.
Stock unrooted and no screen rotation
I received the Lollipop OTA last week. Since the upgrade my screen will not rotate. My phone, Verizon, is completely stock. Never been rooted. Any suggestions?
I figured it out. I knew as soon as I posted I would fix it. I disabled the "Support & Protection" app and voila all fixed.

So I spoke too soon. This worked for a little while and now the screen doesn't rotate again
No screen rotation
Same here after debloating. I noticed you can still rotate the screen in the camera app. I suppose it has nothing to do with the tethering Addon. I also read somewhere that many people without root have been experiencing problems with contacts crashing, so that issue has nothing to do with the process of keeping root. I'm just putting some things out there. I'm not an expert, but root savvy. it has to do with debloating. I'll reroot and debloat one item at a time. Also, what is jrkruse?
I've pretty much established it's a glitch in the lollipop update. My gyro and accelerometer stopped working shortly after I updated. I did a factory reset with no luck, so I odin'd back to 4.4. Gyro working. I go through the updates again and all was good until I got the lollipop update again.
So, I went ahead and rooted and installed a rom based on 5.0. Gyro worked for one day, then crapped out again. I know it's the sensors because I used galaxy tools to test them.
Hopefully it'll annoy one of the amazing dev 's around here and we'll get a fix. After VZW released 2 updates in a week, we all know they won't be in a hurry to fix it.
Same here went back to 4.4 everything works. My Co workers have stock 5.0 and the accell works fine. On a side note my 4.4 rooted s5 is smoother and snapper.
Ok... well, another month has gone by... the bloatware and Stock Lollipop on my Verizon G5 has been getting on my nerves lately...
It seems that Lollipop has serious issues with causing the Battery to overheat and drain too fast. I dealt with these... I got the Lollipop upgrade when it was rolled out, and got the phone a year ago... never rooted it...
So when this screen rotation started last week, I figured it was time to root and use a rom. I ASSUMED it was related to the update... so after doing the research...and downloading an Odin that infected my primary desktop with a nasty virus... I tried to factory reset in recovery mode. This fixed all my problems.. however now, 20hrs later my screen has stopped rotating again... I did debloat some last night and no issues when I went to bed with screen rotation... now tho... Its gone... both the button in the pull down menu and in my settings is telling me that screen rotation is ON... bUT I have nothing working... except my poker game that loads landscape by default...
If there is no fix for this problem.. I will be forced to Odin back, root this phone and then use a rom, just don't have the time for it again.... any ideas? Anyone? Anyone?
Having the same problem after updating. Rotation works in the camera app but nothing else. Any luck finding a solution?
My experience
My Samsung Galaxy S5 screen won't rotate neither. I'm an IT Tech by trade so I did a lot of investigating into this. This seems to be a known issue with Verizon Galaxy S5's, but I have seen complaints from TMobile and AT&T users as well. I've read plenty of quick fix suggestions on numerous sites. Here's what I've done... I did the "figure 8" trick, basically turning the phone over and over in all directions. No luck. I turned the screen rotation button off and on, nothing. I turned the rotation button off, powered down, pulled battery for 30 seconds, powered on, turned screen rotation back on. Nothing. I've wiped the system cache. Nothing. Now here's what's interesting...
I boot the phone in safe mode and still the rotation didn't work. However, when I boot back in to normal mode, all of a sudden it worked! It worked for a good 10 minutes. Then I turned the screen off with the power button (put phone in sleep mode). A few minutes later I got a text so I turned the screen back on, swiped to unlock, and behold, rotation didn't work again. I did the safe mode - to - normal mode cycle again and it worked again, but only until my screened turned off.
I decided it must be a 3rd party app. I decided to back up all my pics and contacts and did a factory reset. My intention was to slowly add my apps back, maybe 1 each hour, until I found the culprit. Screen rotation worked after factory reset, again up until the screen was turned off for more than a few seconds. I installed no 3rd party apps. In fact I didn't even open Google Play Store. The only thing I did was set up the weather/click widget. I powered down and back on (no safe mode involved) and screen rotate worked again, until the phone went to sleep again.
I figured this must be a Lollipop issue, so I flashed the rom back to Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) using oDin. Right from the get go the rotation didn't work. Reboot into safe mode, then normal mode, and behold, rotation worked. Temporarily. Now every time I reboot the phone it'll work for just a few seconds or minutes. It only works if I do a full shutdown, boot in safe mode, then boot in normal mode. I disabled SHealth and a bunch of other preinstalled apps, no effect. The only ones I'm not sure about, or can't disable without rooting, is SysScopeService (or SysScope) and Unified Daemon.
Phone is not rooted, though I'd like to figure out how to do this. Still running Android 4.4.4. So frustrating that I can't text sideways, view pics sideways, or videos. Annoying and yet no one seems to be able to figure this out.
S5 Screen will not rotate
I have the 'exact' same issue with my S5 after updating to 5.0.
- Boot into Safe Mode > Screen rotation not working
- Boot out of Safe Mode > Screen rotation will work until I turn off the screen or it times out..!
I can reproduce this scenario easily and every time. This is definitely a s/w bug.
ARE THE DEVELOPERS EVER GOING TO FIX THIS..? Very frustrating that there are so many issues with Android lately. I've always been an Android fan/user.
Maybe the iPhone is looking good right now

Suddenly have no auto-rotation too. Any ideas - how to fix?
Any solution? I have not auto rotation too. Plis help
Me, too. I wish i knew enough to fix this issue. I have contacted both Verizon and Samsung. Verizon said safe mode, factory data reset, sorry we can't help.
Second verizon guy said try the usb recovery tool. Says it goes deeper than factory reset as it pulls some of the latest OS files from Samsung (i don't know if this is true or not) I will try that tonight.
Samsung offered to replace the motherboard. Sounds like this will be futile as it isn't a hardware issue.
The struggle is real.
I was fortunately able to resolve my issue with a battery pull and restart. Might be coincidence, but the rotation issue started a few weeks after I got a wallet case for the phone. It may be a long shot, but could the magnetic latch on the phone case be a possible culprit to the gyroscope going out?

Trouble with sensors after the recent update

This is a problem I didn't notice right away. I attribute it to the QF2 update because wife also has an S7 and experiences exactly the same issue.
In a matter of hours after reboot the internal sensors stop working or behave erratically. Sometimes the phone would go to the lowest brightness, the screen will not turn off by the proximity sensors during a conversation. Functions relying on shaking the phone stop working. Some (but for some reason not all) apps don't switch to the landscape mode. I downloaded several sensor testing apps and they confirmed my suspicions. After the reboot everything works, but several hours later sensors start showing random values or "no data".
Does anyone else have the same problem? With two affected phones in my possession it can't be a random fluke.
The phones are not rooted.
I had an issue where the phone no longer responded to "OK Google". Turns out I uninstalled all the updates to the "Google" app and reinstalled them from Google Play and that fixed it. I wasn't sure if it was the OTA for the phone or something else, but the OTA might have jacked something up somewhere. Have you cleared cache and such to see if that fixes it? Otherwise, I'm having no issues with the sensors not working.
Thanks for your suggestion. My phones are set for manual updates. I updated everything and rebooted. The sensors worked fo about 12 hours and stopped. Which cache you recommend to purge? Google app?
