we just have to wait the new lollipop version, normally this version of android gonna optimize the gestion of ram

i wish samsung fix it

i never have experience any lag in my prime, if you have a lot of apps in background it will get laggy just close the apps and always grab the latest update

RAM can be optimized by either running a newer (and supposedly more efficient) version of the OS,
..OR..
by shutting down apps that are running in the background.
There is no way to ADD more RAM. Internal memory can be supplemented with a microSD card, but this may only help performance if your internal memory is close to full (Android seems to reserve a small portion of the internal memory to run). If you add a micro SD card, you will subsequently have to move any apps and/or other files that you are keeping on the internal memory over to the card. That should free up space.
Good luck!

Lucky the cricket version has 1.5 gb of ram.

No problem of RAM for me. Juste installed the lollipop update after a factory reset and all work smoothy.

High RAM usage

Hi,
I noticed that ram usage on galaxy s4 is very high even when all of the apps are closed. I have used task manager to close all of the apps and then cleared the memory but there was still about 1.05GB of ram used. I don't know if this is normal since I haven't been using android phone for 2 years. Can somebody tell me if this is normal and why? If not what can I do to fix it? Thanks!
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
its normal for s4... some stock apps are being cached in memory for faster operations
unused ram is wasted ram. If an app needs extra space, something will be automatically killed to make that space.

all of this is true... also keep in mind, the gpu requires slightly more ram because of the 1080p resolution.
Ok. Thank you all for the help
This is the problem of Sammy ROMs, the only way to fix it is to... wait for a Custom ROM and Flash it
this is normal on SGS4 .
Reasons of that are mainly GPU and HQ resolution , cached services and process, and even more if you are using the included extra features (S-voice, NFC ...)
But the SGS4 come with 2 gb of RAM ! you still get like 800 free mb of memory that is good enough for all you needs ))
Personally when I close all apps i get 0.91 gb used memry and 0.9bg free memory

[Q] RAM on I9505

Hello guys,
i can't understand where disappear 2Gb memory on SGS4 i9505. I use stock ROM, minimum one time per day i need clean memory through "active aplication" manager because phone unresponsive, it is same situation as on my old phone SGS1 I9000 (512mb RAM). Even all aplication cleared still used 1.2Gb RAM of 1.78Gb physically memory. This is normal or i need begin flash a lot of custom ROM's for find something useful that realy works??? What is better way?
Thanks in advance for answers.

Stock ROM is full of bloatware and stuff. This means you have a ****load of useless apps running in the background, and some useful ones too. You should root your phone, go to application manager and DISABLE all of the useless bloatware you never use (use caution though - some things depend on others. For example don't disable google services if you intend on using any of their things).
There are many apps out there which show you what's running in the background and taking most space. Are you sure your phone feels slower or it's just the RAM that worries you?
Keep in mind that apps keep running in the background so you can later open them quickly, so if you force close them the next time you open them it will be slower.

Yes, i feel that phone slower, i wait too long time, while i check RAM it is almost full, and after cleaning RAM phone is more responsive.
Ok, i'll try disable some services in background with root phone, thank you.
I'm still using mine on the unbranded MDM which came with the phone.
I will wait a couple more days, and if they will not release a BTU update, i will flash the DBT one.
Since i have the phone ~May , i never had those lags and redraws like i see here from some users.
I'm not rooted at the moment and if i use apps/games and i just exit them, used RAM drops to ~0.98, i never clear them from memory, but if i do then the used ram drops to ~0.87.

let the android system manage your ram.
any way, you want to see more free ram?
go to developers options and set "Background process limit" to 4 or less

it saves a little bit of battery.
but setting limit is not so good for multi-tasking, some apps (not cached in the background) will take a little more time to open, maybe you will not notice that. so if you set limit for example to 2, open running app in setting and press on "show cached process", you will see only 2 apps are cached in the background

Yes, i did it, now on phone "Background proccess limit" is 4 app, but in any case during normal phone job 1.1Gb is used.
Simply i compare with my previous phone galaxy s I9000 that flashed with custom ROM on android 4.1 (comparable software) and i it perfectly and stable work with 512Mb RAM and 1gb (one core) proccessor. I don't play with games and don't feel high difference between two absolutely different hardware's & devices (i don't speak about screens). Old phone work very smoothly, it only uses half as much system resources relatively to new galaxy s4 i9505. Why i need use "Background process limit" option on newest device with 2Gb RAM, even think about it? What is payment for biggest high quality screen?

no need and not mandatory to set process limit, it is for dev and testing purposes.
linux is smart enough to manage ram

z1 Multitasking solutions ( fix)

Hello, as all of you know the Z1 has very bad ram management, and apps reload most of the time unlike other 2gb ram phones
i used ram expander ,worked very good for a month, then my micro sd died.
please everyone share his solution or alternatives and thanks.
I think too many people are blaming the wrong thing for the wrong problems.
No proper testers for roms... so the wrong thing gets fixed.
Kernel Auditor has Virtual Memory and LMK settings. If you want, have a try.
Anyway, is there any relation between Virtual Memory and Dead SD Card?

Not sure how Ram expander works, but it might just be those programs that create a swap file on the SD card - so i'm guessing that since data is constantly being read/written all the time to the external sdcard, it uses up the limited lifespan of the device. But it might just be a coincidence that this breaks the SD card
Yeah unfortunately SD cards don't like being constantly written to.

Yes it does. Nearly everything has its own lifespan. And in case of TLC Memory, it often happens.
However, since that TLCs are usually slow and not reliable, it shouldn't be considered as a main memory. There are some alternatives like MLC Memory.
And... cuz SONY Xperia Z1's SD Card Slot is even pretty slow, it is really slow compared with internal eMMC memory. It is definitely not for cache memory or virtual mem.

Speed or no speed.
SD cards don't like the abuse.
At hackaday we did tests with several SD cards to see how long different cards survived in a raspberry pi.
All of them failed in a very short time.
The constant reading a writing wrecks them unlike SSD drives that have RAM to help them cope with this constant write and erase..
Maybe i don't use the phone so much or don't have too many apps to put the phone really under stress but to me it really seams like the phone is flying. Or probably it's because i came after a samsung experience before i got the z1. I've never experienced app reloading until now, only an app crash, but it was because of the app (chromium for snapdragon).

Actually, I don't know that. No matter what I do, the available ram doesn't go below 800 mgb. I even turned off swap to gain speed and disk caching in Firefox. Believe it or not, but this also helps to lower CPU temperature by about 5 degrees.
Get rid of bloat both Google and Sony or better go for a custom rom.

it's the same, i had lg G1 , G2, galaxy s4 and i could open too many apps and games without getting any reload, but on this z1 4 apps, or a game and 2 apps, and boom, reload ...,
happens on kitkat, lollipop too.
i swear on my optimus g, i can open asphalt 8, asphalt nitro, gta san andreas, with fb and messenger on background, and i still get like 400mb free ram.
each game consuming near 200mb ram on task manager
5.1.1 came with great RAM optimisations and they streamlined the system apps memory usage greatly. Secondly it is all relative to what apps you got installed that run continuosly. I just cant relate to your problem with my Z1 as I just had a few times it has run low on RAM (LP 5.1.1) and that was switching between photo album and heavy photo editor (Polarr) after half an hour.
About the games well.. Optimus G renders it in 1280x720 and the Xperia Z1 at 1920x1080 which requires more RAM for the framebuffers.

Z1 compact has 720p and its ram sucks like z1 and z ultra
I finished Doom3 on my sgs4mini....
I cant get past the second level without:
1. overheating.
2. auto close.
Just set up your phone new (Clean Install through PC Compain) you notice that most user are happy with the Multitasking management of the Z1 always include me too.
Just flash your phone new to a older software (4.4.4) debloat maybe increase the swap profile( I deactivated mine completely swap=0 and happy with multitasking)
Also
Flash new Rom
Try Custom
Try new kernel when open a bootloader don't kill you
Be smart optimize it.
Buy new phone or go again to Samsung.
But please stop crying here

how to check weather a rom has good ram optimisation or not

Currently i am using ressurection remix which is pretty good but after closing a app the ram remain still occupied and doesn't become like it was before opening that app. please tell me which rom has best ram optimisaton
and for what you need free ram? If system or app needs more ram it will free it by himself, if you want install greenify and greenify apps, but for sure you don't need a lot of free ram.

I havent seen a rom with a really bad ram management here for our Bacon all the ROMs are based on one of the 2 'sources' we have. I wouldn't worry too much about it just enjoy the great roms
Verstuurd vanaf mijn A0001 met Tapatalk
If there's memory leak in the source, it will be there in all the derived ROMs. But you need not worry about it. Sources are quite stable and memory management must be equally good.
However, it can be a bit different on suppose an AOSP based ROM vs a LineageOS based ROM. This is also very kernel dependent. You should try them out yourself and see! Good luck.

RAM management (always low free ram)

Hi everyone. I have noticed that I don't have more than 1gb of free ram even if I close all the apps. And if I open my browser, it eats 500mb of ram. My phone became slower after few days of use, I notice constant lags. I have put most apps to sleep, and disabled some packages. But still very low on ram. Any advice please?

It is normal that your phone uses ram although 1 gb available is a bit low. Maybe factory reset the phone? If that doesn't work I would go back to where you got it from or contact samsung support
I checked and I have about 1.5 available after closing all apps and optimisation
I typically have 500-700 free on mine and experience no lag. Unix based OSes are supposed to occupy memory in order to launch things faster.
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Yeah don't worry it's normal !
Some OS almost use 100% of RAM, but keep providing a perfect multitasking.
It doesn't mean that you will only have 700-900 Mo available for your multitasking, your OS will free RAM if necessary and let it to the apps. And even with 10 open apps in window mode, you will still have 700 Mo of RAM available
Thanks everyone. I have 1-1.2gb free with no active apps and now i see it's ok. Phone becomes a little slower when there are many apps open, but I believe it's also ok, nothing critical.
Why do people care how much RAM is free? I don't worry about it on my phone or laptops. I just let the devices do what they do best -- entertain me

I noticed lags and then saw that I have low free ram. On my previous leeco le max 2 I've had 1.8-2 gb free. So i thought maybe i do something wrong and more free ram will make phone faster. But looks like everything's fine.

In Android unused Ram is wasted Ram. You normally want to have about 500 free. If you're noticing that every time you open an app again it has to reload then yes it's an issue.
release ram
Hi; if you want more free ram you can reduse background process in setting/developer option
if you set background process on 2 system will process only two apps.
if your phone is slow when ram is full you can use ram booster.
Force close it! and greenify (need root) are the best ram booster.
Just uninstall applicatiions that you dont use or disable them. Pretty simple
yes more ram usage is not more battery drain, and device lag if there is no more ram or not enough available but its like if you only fill 1/4 of your fridge , your fridge won't consume more power if you put more stuff on it and it become only a problem if you want to put a big thing on it but its already full , so its only now that its useful so empty a bit the fridge to make space , but empty your fridge to put nothing on it is useless, you know what I mean?
