Unusual Firmware - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. from Maypo1.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-900V
Kit Kat 4.4.4
BBG900VVRU1ANK7 That's with a 7 not a 2
I am a newbie, and want to root back to 4.4.2 NGC. I have downloaded Odin 3.10,the NGC Firmware from SamMobile, and backed up my phone to my laptop all folders. I didn't see the ANK7 FIRMWARE on SamMobile only ANK2.
My question is can I still backflash my firmware to NGC with my ANK7 and then root and go back to my ANK7 with root. ANK7 is a fat thumb causing the first of 2 downloads towards 5.0 but I refuse to go the 2nd update to 5.0 and keep ig
noring the notifications from verizon. Any Help Appreciated,Maypo1

I have been searching all day, and I can't find any info on this problem. Can anyone help us poor lost souls?

Dude keep come and relax, just flash the ncg kernel and install towelroot and flash the nk2 kernel trust me you dont need to worry

I just followed the instructions for NK2 and below found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
It worked. I just get nervous when it doesn't explicitly state that it will work for me.

Yes. NK7 was the last kitkat version. You're fine.
Few people run it; it's just a prerequisite to upgrade to OA8.

Good news from Maypo1
Thank you Blair I'M ON FIRST firmware and got root with towelroot, and did a full backup withTitanium. Now soon I will upgrade to NK2 and hope to keep root
Thank'a again, Maypo1

No problem. You can take any update until BOD5 and not worry about being able to downgrade.
Do not take the upgrade to BOE1--that's what'll do you in. Specifically, it's the RPM, SBL1, DBI, SDI, and TZ partitions that you have to worry about. The extension .mbn indicates "multiboot", just in case you care, heh.

Abother quick question Blair
What if I choose to stay on ANCG instead of upgrading to ANK2 because last time I had to
Do a reset because I got stuck on verizon logo so I had to reload all my settings but the
OS ANCG took. Do you know what the difference between the 2 OS' S are ANCG seems
STABLE ?. and I am afraid of a BRICK.
THANK'S. Maypo1

It's really difficult to truly brick this phone.. You could write garbage all over the most sensitive partitions and recover it. If the phone can't load the first-stage bootloader, it falls back to a "duh, the light is on but nobody's home" mode and sits there. It will appear dead, but if you give it power and hook it up to your computer, you'll see an unusual device identifying itself as something like "qdloader 9008" There are low-level tools from qualcomm you can use to fix it, but there's an easier way. Search for "unbrick image" or something like that. You just write the image to the sdcard, and if the phone has no idea what to do, it looks there when you press the download mode key combination and you can get it into download mode.

Thank's
Maybe I will try it.I have my Titanium Backup of whole ANCG system, and ANK2 has to have some improvements over ANCG. I just don'the want Lolly pop right now. I hope I can hold root with the upgrade.
Thank'a again Maypo1

I don't understand, did you try to flash up to ANK2 and then get this problem?
Maypo1

Big Boo Boo
After reading my own Newdee thread .I realized that I flashed the whole sysrem firmware forNCG and not just the Kernal. So now I am rooted on NCG but if I try to just flash the Kernal for my original firmware which was ANK7,or use Kernal for ANK2. what happens? will I keep root and go back to ANK7/2 or fail.Sorry for being such a dummy, that's why I'm a newbee. I would like to help others but it seems I can't help myself. bI do have the full firmware for ANK2 from SamMobile downloaded in odin folder even though ANK7 is my origional.
Any help appreciated.

I337 AT&T S4 - Return to Stock (No WiFi)

I recently bit off more than I could chew with my S4 (I337). I had 4.4.2 KitKat on it and wanted to root it to add teathering. I decided thought there was no root for 4.4.2 so I thought I would try downgrading to 4.3 then root. This seemed best because I didn't like the way the SD card is handled in 4.4.2 and some of my apps (like ftp server) have stopped working.
When I got the phone back up from flashing with Odin it says it has version 4.3. My WiFi will not turn on. If I slide the switch to on it slides right back to off and the phone tells me that an operation was block (can't remember the full verbage. I have installed and attempted to install many things on my phone. I have used recovery mode / Odin3 and Kies (Kies doesn't allow much).
At this point I just would like to get my phone back to 4.4.2 with the WiFi working. Then I can restore my backup and be back to square one with a lesson learned.
I have an I337 that currently thinks it has version 4.3 on it. The baseband version is I337UCUFNC1 currently. The build number is JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2.
If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I have read and tried many things over a two day period and finally decided to ask for help.
Had this issue before on my Bell Canada S4, but don't recall exact way to fix it.
Think the solution was to find an older (might be newer) stock. I think I used a different version like the Telus Canada version as well and it ended up working. Then you update through kies after.

Wifi does not work because of the modem/kernel mismatch, i.e. MDB modem and MK2 kernel. Not sure what your goal was when you began flashing your phone but since you fortunately did not flash teh MK2 bootloader you are still able to locate the MDB full odin tar and flash back to stock which will resolve your issue.

If you don't care about losing your MDB unlocked bootloader you can get to the latest kitkat firmware by flashing the NB1 full odin tar from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223, then once flashing is complete go to settings/more/about phone/software update then take the ota update to NC1 which is the latest kitkat version for our phone.
But what I would do is keep your unlocked MDB bootloader and since you already flashed the MK2 AP file you can get your phone running well again by flashing the MK2 modem: https://mega.co.nz/#!pwESna5I!YK7EKG37xXIG1ReB-Z-mfSMoXNkXQ9t2EdMK9ofgJKg
From there, there are still a number of options available to get to kitkat which I won't get into.

excited to give this a try. rooted with the downgrade method a couple months ago but left with a non-wifi device. my only issue is that the thread says it's for I337UCUFNC1 and our devices are on jss15j.i337ucuemk2. will this fix still work? I've heard on other threads on the subject that the modem kernel doesn't match up with the flashed rom or build number or something.

Same question, different thread!
Not even an hour ago did I answer the same question in a different thread: How do I get WiFi working on my S4?
Well here you go.
My original answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-4-4-2-nb1-t2850878/post54978150#post54978150
The problem is, in order to get WiFi working, you need to install the NB1 modules, but to do that, you need to install Safestrap. However, you can not install Safestrap because the app keeps closing on you. There is a simple fix to this, which I will explain later. For now, just read this WHOLE post BEFORE you do anything, and keep in mind that I am NOT held liable if you mess up your phone. Use this at your own risk.
1.) Root your phone
If you're already rooted with something like SuperSU or Superuser, skip this. If not, read ahead. Download and install the Towelroot APK file attached to this post, open it, and click 'make it ra1n'. If your phone didn't reboot, now you have root (they need to trademark that). Now, down below, I also included the APK for SuperSU. Download and install it. Now open it. When you open it, let it install the 'Normal' way, not via the 'TWRP/CWM' way. Also, when it asks you to disable KNOX, say yes, wait a couple of minutes (it will still be loading) and reboot your phone. Open up SuperSU again, click 'Yes' to disable KNOX again, and now you have a good base to start from.
2.) Install Safestrap AFTER fixing the error
The error your are getting is easily fixed. Go to the Play Store and install 'SELinux Mode Changer'. Open it, grant it root access, and change the mode to 'Permissive'. Now, open up Safestrap again (you mentioned you already installed it), and it shouldn't force close. Click 'Install', and if the 'Reboot to Recovery' option below is not grayed out after that then it worked.
3.) Download and install the NB1 modules
On your phone, download the included NB1 modules ZIP file I attached for you, and once that is done you need to reboot. After the Galaxy S4 logo, you'll see a screen that says 'SAFESTRAP: DISABLED' and there will be a little robot. TIP: To enter Safestrap, press the menu button (physical, hardware key) under 'Recovery' at that screen. To continue to Android, press the back key (again, physical) under the 'System' tab. For now, press the menu button under 'Recovery'. Now, click 'Install' which should be in red, click 'Add zips', and navigate to your Downloads folder. Now click on the NB1 modules ZIP you just downloaded. Swipe to install, and reboot. This time, hit the back key under 'System'.
All done!
Now, Android should (and will) boot up, and you'll have working WiFi! If, for some odd reason, you don't have WiFi- do NOT panic! Just search around for the MF3 modules and flash those! All is good, all is good. A lot of this guide was taken from my post about my personal method of SIM unlocking the AT&T Galaxy S4 without the dialer codes or an AT&T SIM. It was just modified a little to work for you.
Remember, hit thanks!

Those are my exact words. Also, the attached files (NB1 modules, SuperSU, Towelroot, etc.) can be found attached to my post in the link above. Have a good night, and best of luck! :good::good::good:

Soft Bricked phone and now ODIN flash failing help!

So I upgraded from 4.4.2 kitkat to 5.0 lollipop. However, I soft bricked my phone by installing the wrong xposed SDK. Now I'm trying to flash 4.4.2 kitkat back onto my bricked phone and then update back to lollipop. Problem is ODIN is not wanting to flash the g900a stock rom back. It gives me an error saying 'SW REV CHECK FAIL : [ABOOT]FUSED 2 > BINARY 1' does anyone know how to fix this as I'd like to fix my phone soon!
900A? That's the AT&T model isn't it? That being the case, the locked bootloader on your device is only ever going to let you flash 5.0 if you had 5.0 on your device before you bricked....

That's good an all but where can I find a 5.0 in a tar format! My phone is literally bricked so I can't access it to flash the .zip files to it. I can't find a .tar of lollipop 5.0 anywhere no matter where I look all the links for ones have been taken down! You wouldn't happen to have one would you?
Not sure fella.....checked every hosting/firmware website I can think of, and all I'm seeing are KitKat firmwares.....
Have you tried Kies to see if it'll perform an 'emergency recovery/restore'?

Kies won't recognize my device! It just says it's not supported! ;-; this is really unfortunate I've been looking everywhere with what little time I have (I work and I'm in college and it's around finals season for the semester so that doesn't help with time to fix this). I've been scouring everywhere but can't find anything. This is really unfortunate and I don't have the money to afford to have my phone fixed ;-; I'm really hoping I can find a solution soon! Everytime I try to install a kitkat 4.4.2 rom it just says FUSED 2 > BINARY 1 or something along those lines. From what I've heard that means I can't downgrade. Like I said what happened was I installed the wrong xposed sdk and it soft bricked. Every lollipop 5.0 rom I've found is in zip format. Now this wouldn't be a problem if I had a custom recovery that could flash zips and the means to put the zip on the phone. The problem is I don't (yes I've tried using ADB it refuses to put the zip on the phone it only lets me put .tar.md5's on there with the sideload and everything else just returns an error). If you find a solution or anyone else does please let me know! I'm In very dire need of help!! Also, my phone it makes it to the samsung galaxy s5 powered by android screen and then after that I just hear the AT&T noise but the screen doesn't change it just hangs there. I've also tried a full cache wipe and system restore in the recovery menu!
First of all.....The obvious....lol
These zips you mention, have you extracted them to see what's inside them.....
I know that sammobile and Samsung-updates provide their firmware .tars inside zips.....
Secondly, until someone makes an AT&T Lollipop firmware available, it looks like you're going to have to play the waiting game......at this point, I believe that with the correct firmware package, you WILL be able to recover your device....that may not be true further down the line if you continue to try 'potential' fixes.....
My advice is to leave it 'as-is' (unsatisfactory...I know) and wait for the firmware to become available......
Do you have an older device you can use in the mean time?

Yes I unzipped the zip. It was just files inside. I might just take it by an AT&T I'm pretty sure with all I've done to it the warranty is void but it's a worth a shot maybe they will take it in. I don't have an older device right now and I need to have some my phone soon as I have important usage of it with work. It seems I guess I don't have a choice left ;-; thank you though for all your help I'm very thankful for it

Just want to boot my SM-T337A

I was just in your position myself. Just flash the lp fix boot tar with Odin from the bottom of first post of thread below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/general/rooted-nk2-att-t377a-t2992639
You may need to factory reset in recovery afterwards, I borked mine so bad I had to take to best buy to have them reflash 5.1.1 firmware since we do not have access to that file.
Hope this helps!
Did they do that free of charge? I have the tablet 4 8.0 sm-t337a and I rooted it, was working fine then got message about att found dead software blah blah blah..but now when it boots up, I can't get the samsumg setup menu...been like this for days now...I tried LP boot loop fix...and no luck.
Wrong battery info with lollipop?
Best Buy wanted to charge me forty bucks to upgrade from a rooted KK to L. Others have been more successful.
Can someone with a t337a running lollipop check their battery capacity in settings_general_about device. Mine is showing only 2400mah @ 5v. Odd.
I haven't changed the battery, so it should be 4450mah @ 3.7v. Right?

SM-G900F Downgrade problem

hello everyone
3 days ago I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F and the pre-installed OS was Android 5.0 Lollipop
I wanted to downgrade to KitKat 4.4.2 but when I flashed the 4.4.2 firmware at the end of The Flash the phone Rebooted but but there was nothing on the screen and the phone was stuck on a boot loop so I reflashed the lollipop firmware and everything worked
The question is it possible to downgrade to kitkat 4.4.2 knowing that the preinstalled firmware was Android lollipop 5.0 for rooting purposes to keep knox 0x0
thank you very much
The problem with using Odin to downgrade is that it doesn't fully erase what was on there before, it just overwrites it......
Did you try to wipe data in recovery after the flash? Sometimes this is all that is needed.
If you did, and it didn't help, then it may be necessary to flash a pit file at the same time as the firmware.
Before you flash anything with Odin, go to download mode to double check which model you have.....There have been a number of cases recently where devices have been 'rebadged' so that what is displayed on the sticker under the battery does not match what is displayed in download mode (download mode is correct).......

yes it does show SM-G900F in download mode
where can I find a pit file
and just for info when I flashed the 4.4.2 firmware there was nothing on the screen even in download mode I could enter it because the keys combination is well known
You can get the pit file in post 3 here....

Is there any risk on flashing the pit file
I just want to know before I proceed
Thank you very much for your help
There's a risk to any flash, but as long as your device matches the pit file you flash, you should be ok.....having said that, flashing a pit file carries a potentially greater risk than flashing a firmware/rom as it 're-maps' the data partitions.....In the case of a pit flash, if the flash is interrupted because of a power cut off or a premature device disconnection, the phone will be absolutely irrecoverably bricked......

the problem now is that when I flash kitkat 4.4.2 the phone does boot up but there is absolutly nothing on the screen
Do you have any idea?
thanks for all the help
When I downgraded from LP to KK, the first attempt was unsuccessful, the phone wouldn't boot at all
I did nothing else apart from flash it again exactly the same way, the next boot was fine and I was back on KK
You might need to factory reset after flashing, it's possible some apps are causing problems with the boot if they are not compatible from LP > KK

Factory reset first then
But if the screen is just black, not even the initial logo, then something else is wrong
Why flash KK anyway, there is a MM stock ROM port available for the G900F now

Nothing, I tripped mine ages back, everything still works
I read it might affect joining enterprise networks/domains, but never tried and don't use them
Try a different KK ROM, I assume you're trying the latest version atm?
It *might* affect OTA.....Some people say it does, others say it doesn't.....
But knox's main function is to prevent insecure devices from connecting to secure 'enterprise' business servers/networks.....basically if your employer expects you to be able to bring your device to work, and connect it as a business tool, you will no longer be able to do so.....*and* if the device was supplied by your employer, you could end up in all sorts of s**t with them too.....

Doesn't affect OTA, only custom (Root/Recovery) breaks OTA
Anyone saying tripped KNOX breaks OTA hasn't flashed back to 100% stock before trying to update OTA, unrooting doesn't reverse the custom status
Thank you very much for your help
I gave up I installed TWRP and flashed a custom rom
I couldn't resist any longer
I don't care about KNOX nor the warrenty anymore
Poeple are very kind in this forum
much appreciated for all your effort
Curious, why were you trying to downgrade to KK when Android 6 is available for g900f? I downgraded once myself (without pit file) to KK early on when LP was new, but Android 6 is a nice improvement over both imo. KK4.4.2 still has security issues, namely stagefright. If you're happy with custom rom, so be it, just curious if you were (or not) aware of Android 6 availability for your device, incl debloated, stock based knox-free ROMs.

AT&T Galaxy S4 Recovery fails at 24%

My s4 was rooted about a year ago with the logo SAMSUNG and Unlocked with an open lock below it when it boots up. I gave this phone to my girlfriends daughter and forgot to tell her not to try and update it. I don't remember the way i rooted it or what software it had on it at the time.
So when I go to recovery after it loads into an AT&T logo and tries to install it and it gets to 24%. After this it bootloops. Any help would be appreciated. My phone model is SGH-I337 , also not sure of what the original firmware is.

Open lock symbol means your phone is rooted not unlocked.
If you could go to the recovery mode (voloume-up+home+power) it would tell you your firmware version. You could try clear cache, factory reset in recovery mode. If it still gives you the bootloop, you might need to flash the firmware via odin.
You can find instructions and necessary files in here and here.
No recovery options
Sorry I left that part out. When it goes to recovery i get the blue text that say recovery then it goes straight to the AT&T installing. So no recovery options. I can still get to the Odin dowloading screen though and it says im running Samsung Original software

One reason I asked you to go to the recovery option was to know what version of firmware you were on before .
Do you remember you were on jelly bean or kick-kat or lollipop? If you do you can find the firmware for jelly bean and kit-kat on the links I mentioned in the previous message.
If you could not recall your firmware, the latest odin flashable firmware we have is kit-kat NB1.
You can flash that one to revive your phone. Then use twoel root to root the phone. After that you can go to lollipop if you want. All the instructions are there.
Woop Woop!

It worked. I have tried so many different firmware and kit-kat NB1 worked perfectly. Thank you so much, my girlfriends daughter will be so happy. I think i will leave it unrooted for now. I hope this post helps someone else in the future.

I am glad that it works out for you.
Rooting is so easy from that point. Just get towel root and root it. The link also included in my previous post. After the root you might need to disable the AT&T OTA update too. The instructions are also in that post too.
