People on the Vz S4 thread are reporting success rooting 5.0 using KingRoot, however keep in mind that if successful there is no way to recover an I337 running 5.0 if something goes wrong other than taking it to BestBuy or an ATT store. Vz makes the full Odin .tars available and ATT does not.

Did you try following the instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59970133? Remember, since you're already on 5.0.1, you'll have to down grade to NB1 using Odin and then root and update back to 5.0.1. The post details all of these instructions. Good luck.

I have the same phone with the same problem. I flashed mine with odin back to 4.4.2 then I rooted it with towelroot. I had to install safestrap to unlock with regionlock away. Worked like a charm, now my phone is rooted and unlocked. There is also another post on here somewhere to help keep root and upgrade to 5.0.1. I hope this helped.

By using the Kingroot 4.1 app. Easy 1 click root then go to the Playstore and download the Super sume app to replace Kinguser, which is in Chinese, with Super Su which is another easy 1 click process. Then reboot

Yes you will but you can easy re-root.
You have to be stock rooted with no mods and stock recovery to get it.

Easy way to do it is to wait for the notification to show up again. Go into the notification pane (drag down from the top of the screen), long press on the notification itself, go to App Info and then uncheck the Notification box in there.

Just a small clarification. You don't have to be rooted. That may work too, but I've always done the updates with an un-rooted stock ROM and recovery.

Yes I know that you can unroot and still update that way but people tend to take updates when they are rooted with mods for some reason and then come ask ehy cant I take update. so yeah I said that just to safe the process of odining back to stock.

Are you certain that you are writing 4.4 versions and not 4.3 versions? Everything kernel and recovery related is (slightly) different between 4.3 and 4.4, and because of the downgrade restrictions in 4.4 you can never write 4.3 stuff!
Yep tried different updated kernels.
Would the write protected has anything to do with it when i am in download mode?
After i updated to kitkat i also cant delete files anymore with a.o. xplore.
Maybe its related?
Grtz

Thanks man for your post.
I checked the reactivation lock box a while ago and that seemed to be the problem.
Already had the right kernel.
After installing cwm to become root had to install superSU 1.91.zip
Thru cwm.
The thick red sentence warning wasn't large enough ☺

Were you able to pull the zip file?
im going to go with you got that message due to flashing a 4.4.3 rom then going back to a 4.4.2. rom. im pretty sure when you get a real update it always says are you ready to update to kit kat 4.4.3 or something like that. but i could be wrong. this is just going off of memory, and the fact that you look like you have a custom rom on the phone.

I'm going with that also since i don"t see anything inside the cache folder and indeed i was returning from liquids official KK 4.4.3 build. But since i have been going from AOSP custom roms almost every week I never got this until now. I did read about this bug in CM though. Sorry guys false alarm.
Kindly please guide me which S4 version I have, is it normal AT&T i337 or some other variant?
And what is it written on recovery menu, it comes every time I boot into recovery.
