[Q] Lollipop 5.0 aggressive background app quitting - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on 5.0 with Xposed and the ColorFade Memory Leak fix. However, it seems that Lollipop is still force closing background apps too quickly. I play Hearthstone a lot, and I used to background it to go on chrome or respond to a text message or something in Kitkat 4.4 with no issues. Now on 5.0, it will close very quickly. I even hit home sometimes and went right back into the app without doing anything else, and saw that it had closed instantly. Is there any fix for this, or do I just have to wait?
I also noticed that when I was using Google maps and Spotify, then opened Waze, the first two would force close as well. This wasn't an issue on KK 4.0 either.

have the same issues on the stock firmware

I'm on tmo and I have the same problem. it's with stock and AOSP. I can't run pocket cast and anything else for fear of pocketcast (or google music for that matter) closing. I wonder if there is a way to increase it's priority so lollipop won't close it.

I heard that TouchWiz by Samsung wasn't supposed to have this issue even though all other flavors did, but considering I'm having it, it's not the case.
There's a thing in the Xposed module, App settings, called resident which allows an application to be forced/higher priority in memory, but I find it either doesn't work because lollipop's force close background apps is too strong, or it only makes the background apps stay a tiny bit longer.

Update: I found out today that my issue was disabling Touchwiz's DVFS in the Wanam Xposed module. Re-enabling it fixed all my issues it seems.

Wow, is that what's been happening? I've been having this same problem on my T-mo Note 4 N910T (Lollipop 5.0.1) with apps aggressively being killed. I've been pulling my hair out because I had no idea why. After seeing your post and disabling the DVFS killer I no longer have this issue. Overlooked it because it just wasn't in my list of things that would be causing it. Thank you!

[Q] Fix to acessibility service TTS bug

I have been looking at improving the way notifications are displayed on my S4 and there are many apps out there e.g. iphone notifications which require a service adding to the accessibility settings. The issue is when you enable a service in there then you get partial TTS throughout the phone e.g. when browsing the internet you get page loaded speech etc.
Looking around the web this is apparently a bug with Samsung firmwares although I have not been able find a work around for stopping the TTS whilst there is an accessibility service enable.
The talkback service is disabled all its settings inside are disabled and driving mode is disabled. I would rather not completely disable voice by freezing the samsung TTS when rooted as I would like to use the voice commands.
I have the same issue - and I'm mighty PO'd about it.. I'd read about it affecting a lot of people with the S3, but I was lucky enough for it not to have happened with my S3.. Unfortunately my luck didn't hold after the move to the S4, and I get the verbal notifications in the stock (Samsung) browser. I tried all sorts of combinations of turning on/off Talkback before/after enabling/disabling the accessibility services that I want enabled in the hope that it would help. It didn't. I ended up disabling the 2x TTS services entirely which was something that I really didn't want to do. (And one of them wouldn't let me disable via Application Manager - I had to freeze it with Titanium, so had to be rooted to work around the issue.
For this to be a known issue with the S3 and to have made its way onto the S4 is ridiculous.
Have you noticed it happening anywhere else, or only in the browser? Browser is the only place that I noticed it, but I didn't really give it a chance to happen elsewhere before trying a bunch of things and then reluctantly disabling TTS.

I have do this same procedure. Do you have notice that with this, the air view don't work correctly on the email and that the upper and lower windows on the stock video player and gallery don't close anymore...

I have only noticed the TTS showing up in the browser so far but I haven't really explored far with it on as it does my head in.
Some devs have raised this with samsung here:
developer.samsung.com /forum/board/thread/view.do?boardName=GeneralB&messageId=232642
This is from iPhone notifications app page from PlayStore:
*** Samsung devices users with Talkback/Keyboard/AirView issues ***
* If your device is reading aloud some of your actions, note that this is a bug in Samsung's OS occuring with any accessibility service, here is a fix : http://www.productigeeky.com/faq#1
* You can follow the progress on this bug with Samsung : http://developer.samsung.com/forum/t...ices/77/204387
Just read the thread. So pathetic on Samsungs side.

Agreed.
Looks like Sammy was in a hurry to get S4 out.

Google should revoke their license till they dont fix **** like this. Developers just cant stop supporting Samsung devices when Samsung has most of the Android device marketshare.

[Q] Apps updated and now graphics is "choppy"

Hi all.
My S4 all the sudden has choppy graphics after a few app updates. All graphics are acting this way, the main launcher (stock) is even acting up! Graphic transitions are not as smooth as they used to be.
This happened before, after installing some camera app, I quickly uninstalled the app since the difference was immediately noticable after installing it and everything went back to normal.
However, a few app updates have been installed tonight, and I don't know which ones were updated, I cleared all the notiications without looking at them all.
Any ideas? Can I somehow see a log of updates for my apps? I really don't want to reset my phone!
Also, HOW in the world can this happen? This must be a bug in the system, that allows apps to mess upp ALL graphics! Very dissapointing.Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Well... I ended up uninstalling almost all my apps, more than 100. :-/
That solved the graphics issue.
Would be nice if this issue was resolved at Google but I'm not sure how to reproduce this since I have no idea what app messed things up!

[Q] Issues after kitkat update

I hope this isn't the wrong forum. This is my first post.
I have a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.2 rooted. I have a few issues that I wonder if others are having. In chrome i have 'location unavailable'. GPS is turned on, but if I tap 'use precise location' nothing happens. Waze works, so my GPS is functioning.
Second issue is if I follow a link that wants to open my Wikipedia app, I get the message that Wikipedia has stopped functioning and it closes. I've had the same issue with a few other apps but Wikipedia happens all the time.
I had changed my runtime to ART. I switched back to Dalvik and same problems. I'm also using GEL. Are these known issues? If so is it due to 4.4 specifically or is it the GEL launcher? I hope it's not the launcher because I really like it.

All I can say is that it's NOT the launcher. When I switched to ART, the TImely app kept force closing. Regarding the wikipedia app, u can wait for an update
Have you enabled the google ocation report? If you haven't, maybe that's why chrome can't detect your location. Also try using high accuracy option.

[Q] 4.4.4 Can I prevent the stock Task Manager from killing Pandora?

Hey guys, I've searched for a while and hope I'm posting in the right forum. I am just looking for a way to keep my stock Task Manager from killing Pandora when I close all apps. I know 3rd party apps have an ignore list but I prefer to keep my stock app due to how well it's integrated. I'm running a rooted Verizon Galaxy S5 on 4.4.4 and have the xposed framework installed. I've looked for a module but couldn't find one. Any ideas? Thanks
Modifying permissions maybe?

Try the AppSettings Xposed module, there you can set Pandora to "resident" --> it won't get killed by android.
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately it didn't help.
Just an update in case anyone else finds this thread looking for an answer. I also checked "insistent notifications" and forced "ongoing notifications" in hopes that it would prevent Pandora from being killed, no luck. I find this weird because iheartradio survives the "close all" with no changes needed. But iheartradio isn't Pandora.

did you do it for all app that belong to pandora? I use the "resident" function with my google now launcher, but I set both Google Search and the Launcher app itself to resident. otherwise it would get killed.
Still, i'm quite unsure what to do since you didn't give any details/sutations where Pandora would get killed.
Edit: forgive any typos. I'm on mobile.

Verizon S10+ Android 10 very aggressive app killing

I recently upgraded my phone (Verizon S10+ 128GB) to Android 10 with the OTA update. Since then it appears that i can't keep any apps running in the background. Before i could have a Pokemon go running, go to something else for at least an hour, and when I switched back to it was still running and i didn't need to reload it. Now I will open Pokemon Go, go to a different app and within 15 seconds i go back to Pokemon Go and it has to reload. I have even added Pokemon Go to run in the background and to the exception list under memory. Is anyone else noticing this very aggressive app killing since they have updated to Android 10? I have also noticed that while using Nova Launcher there will be times when the home screen has to completely reload. The icons will take a second to appear and another second for the widget to pop up as if Nova Launcher was reloaded. Does this have to do with the the phone killing all the apps in the background?
I am not rooted or anything. This is a completely stock phone.
That's odd, I am on AT&T and haven't noticed it. Of course I use the 3rd party app greenify as well. Maybe try a data factory reset or reflashing the Verizon firmware with Odin?

Don't think so. I am experiencing this issue as well and the "Don't Keep Activities" option is turned off, so it's not the developer options.
I believe it is directly tied to the OTA update to Android 10 Q. I didn't experience all this force closing of apps before the update on Android 9.
I am curious if I changed the battery mode from "Optimized" in the Phone Settings (Settings > Device care > battery > Power mode) to maybe High performance would it fix the issue? If so, then we have a problem as selecting anything from High performance would kill apps such as Nova Launcher, or if you're editing a document and need to copy and paste from another app it would kill the other app before you can go back to it. This puts your phone back to iPhone 3GS era, and we don't want that
Hope someone finds a solution.
I did a recovery Data Cache erase and that seems to have fixed it. Something must have happened during the OTA. I haven't had any complaints now.

I have a UK, EE locked 10+ and this used to happen to me when i was running a high RAM app (games basically).
I also believe it has been reduced (eliminated?) from the last large fw update my phone went through a week ago (the samsung UI update, sorry thats a bit vague - as opposed to a more recent 128MB security update).
So i'd guess this is not carrier specific and relates to the samsung fw?
Hope this helps.
I'm experiencing this, and I've been on 10 since beta2, but it just started happening today. Even apps that I "lock" are closing almost immediately.....
