Currently own an s5 and wondering how I can speed it up and debloat it. My storage says I only have 12 out of 16 gig left but I hardly have any apps installed. I checked to see what is taking all the space up and is saying other files....another issue I noticed ever since I uprated to lollipop was battery drains faster than usual. What is the best way to remedy these issues? Does the latest update fix any of this or do I need to bounce back to kit Kat or even do a custom rom? If anyone can help I would appreciate it I am on Verizon.
The 16GB is a lie, they use a lot of that 16GB for the OS itself, you get what's left
Factory reset after upgrading from KK to LP, that fixes the majority of problems upgrading causes
But if I factory reset will I be able to go back to kit Kat later if the issues are not resolved with lollipop? I heard somewhere once you reset you can't go back?
Factory resetting isn't what stops you rolling back, locked bootloaders are
And from what I know, Verizon lock theirs, I'm not 100% sure about the cans and can'ts regarding locked bootloaders and stock ROMs, some people say they can flash stock back and forth no problems, others need to take their phones to the store to get it flashed back to KK
Either way, factory resetting is a must after upgrading from KK to LP
So if I do reset it won't prevent me from ever being able to go to kit Kat again if the reset doesn't fix the issues? If I root and install a custom rom will it make the phone much faster/bettbetter?
No, factory resetting does not prevent anything, just make sure to disable reactivation lock first
Locked bootloaders, which you will likely already have, ar what prevent flashing ROMs and such
If you are already on LP, you might already not be able to downgrade, like I say I don't know enough about locked bootloader phones (Verizon etc) to know what you can and can't flash
Chances are, you're already stuck with LP unless you take it to a store
Resetting has nothing to do with downgrading back to KitKat. That was determined when you upgraded to Lollipop. if your bootloader is locked from the upgrade to LP, you won't be able to downgrade no matter what (at least until someone finds an exploit).
If your phone does not have a locked bootloader, you can still downgrade, even if you reset the phone.

Cheers for explaining Mike
Thanks for the responses. How can I find out of I have a locked bootloader? And if I do is it still possible that verizon can downgrade back to kit Kat if I bring it in the store? And if all that fails is it possible to root the phone and put the best Rom possible on it ?

You do have a locked bootloader
Yea the store should be able to do it
Don't know if there are any methods for rooting / custom ROM locked bootloaders
Thanks for the reply detection. Does anyone else know if it's possible to root on Verizon with the s5? Or is it not worth it?
What is best to do to get my battery and the speed of the phone fastest? If I do downgrade to kit Kat is it possible to turn off updates somehow?

Which baseband are you on now? MF3? MJ6? Before which baseband were you on MDL? or MF3? What root method did you use?
It sounds like you rooted your phone, but did not take measures to prevent over the air (OTA) updating.
That OTA updating will destroy root, and lately also locks your bootloader in a manner that is even more restrictive.
It does not sound like you used any custom rom, and did not use Safe Strap either, but you need to provide more info for folks to work with.

You need to read all threads about 4.3, MJ6, and MJ9 in the "General" and " Q & A" sections of the forum to learn about what is happening with your phone.
Hi everyone,
Its been a long time since the bootloader was version MDL. As you may be aware this was the last version that could be fully rooted and custom recovery'd before the MF3 firmware locked everybody down. Well a year and a half later and my MDL Phone is having an issue that I can't fix. The Phone keeps failing to recognize the SIM card that is in it (Image), and previously it would randomly disconnect (Image). I've tried getting a new SIM card and that failed to fix the issue; I clean-installed by ROM to eliminate that as a cause, but no luck.
I'm fairly sure my only option now is to go to AT&T and have them fix or more likely replace the phone. Is there any possible way I could get a phone with MDL still? Or are there any alternatives I could try? I don't know what to do now. Thank you.

I wouldn't go to at&t. The first thing they'll do is "upgrade" you to nj4. You said you Chan installed the rom, does that mean you odin'd the stock firmware? If not I'd flash the mdl firmware in Odin
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
Well, there are several options; if you are on mdl, with a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, you can flash updated modem firmware (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496517), to see if it is just the firmware (this will not affect the bootloader); you might also be suffering from the "sim removed" problem, documented here and here
Good luck!
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone here can assist me. I've not played about with the phone since buying it and seem to have forgotten how to do everything in that time. I used to install custom ROMS on my older phones on an almost daily basis but having kids have prevented me having time to do this any more!!
I have the G900F model and after buying it, the first thing I did was root it and install Philz recovery and Wanam exposed. I haven't needed to do anything else since then. The firmware version on the phone is currently 4.4.2. I see now though that 5.0 is available to us and I thought it was high time I updated.
My preference would be to get OTA working, but having trouble with it due to the fact that it is rooted and has a custom recovery. After refusing to even check for updates, I used Wanam exposed to trick the device status into showing "Official" and I can now download updates OTA. The install fails though, but the error is not on screen in recovery long enough to see why, though I presume it has something to do with the custom recovery.
My first question is whether flashing a stock recovery back on will allow the OTA update to work? If so, where can I get it?
Secondly, if this will still not work I take it I will need to use ODIN instead? Will this factory reset the phone? I just want to update to 5.0 without the fuss of resetting the phone, so hoping people can help me get this to happen.
The chances are that you've tripped KNOX by flashing a custom recovery, if that is the case, it's likely that KNOX is breaking OTA, and will continue to do so no matter what you do. The only way past this is Odin..........

So, a few months ago I decided to root my phone with towelroot to give a try on a few root applications, as i was curious, but after that, I decided to remove through supersu it as, even with supersu, was more of a vunerability since I wasn't really using it.
Fast foward a month, I attempted to update my software and was denied with the reason that my device was custom.
Some important info:
- I'm running Android Jelly Bean 4.3, that has never been updated.
- I've attempted a factory reset through the phones recovery mode and made no difference.
- My KNOX waranty value is 0x0, and I would like to keep it that way if possible.
- Phone is factory unlocked.
Also, I've though of using Odin to flash the firmware back, but then I read that there is a possible that KNOX warranty gets triggered, even with a samsung official rom, is this true or am I safe to use it?
My objective is to have my phone back to factory settings (this means wannan xposed is out of the question), in order to be able to update my phone and keep using it, and while there is a lot of similar threads around, most of them reffer to GT-I9505 and GT-I9500 and mine is GT-I9506, which leaves me in somewhat of a doubt wether I should follow those or not.
Thank you for your time.

Flashing a stock rom trough Odin will NOT trip Knox. So just go ahead and flash the firmware you want.

Alright, I assume the proccess is about the same as on the other versions.
Also, should I flash 4.4.2 instead of 5.0.1? The reason I ask is due to this thread.
Update: I flashed 4.4.2 with Odin3 3.10, and it went smooth and knox is still safe, however, for some reason, so thank you Lennyz1988 for the reassurance .
However, I'm not able to update to 5.0.1 Lolipop through OTA, as attempting to update states that im fully up to date.
My phone is running as NL (T-Mobile), factory unlocked and due to my quick research, seems that there is no official OTA update for it. Is it correct or am I looking in the wrong place to update my phone?
So I bought this a while back with the intention of rooting it, but never got around to it. Now I just want to lock the bootloader, update the software and give it to my kid. Can I relock it? Will it be safe to update the software without fear of a soft brink (which is where my T500 currently is after trying to upload an updated ROM)?
Just perform in the reverse order? I searched but got too many "Unlock" results...
