Sony Xperia Z4 Teardown - Xperia Z4/Z3+ General

Sony released Xperia Z4 nearly silently in Japan on April 20 this year. Most of the users are highly praise magnetic charging port and uncovered USB port. But how about the inner of Sony Xperia Z4? Let’s have a look by this teardown of Sony Xperia Z4!
First of all, open the Z4 cover flap and remove the SIM & SD card tray. Never forget or it will be a barrier to remove the motherboard.

Here is the sony z4 lcd screen.
Next, it’s the back glass. We really have rich experience to remove Xperia Z4 back cover because we have dealt with the teardown of Z1, Z2, Z3 and so on. Give the back cover a heat, open a gap, insert into the guitar pick to cut the sticker underneath, and remove the back panel successfully.
Now we can see the components clearly. Yes, Sony Xperia Z4 is a little different from Z3.
It’s easy to remove battery. It features 3.8V and 2390mAh. And here, we released all the connectors from motherboard.
After twisting off several screws with Phillips screwdriver, we can take away the motherboard easily.
And then, we can remove all the components on the top part such as rear camera, front camera, headphone jack, earpiece speaker and several pcs of securing covers and brackets.
As we know, Sony Xperia Z4 is a kind of waterproof cell. And besides the cover flap, what other protections are used to help anti-water. Sony Xperia Z4 3.5mm headphone jack is customized by ALPS. And around the headphone jack, there is waterproof foam.
The earpiece speaker is stuck on the top of the frame with waterproof sticker.
Sony Xperia Z4 rear camera features 20.7M pixels while front camera features 5M pixels.
And now, we move into the left components of Sony Xperia Z4 including charging flex, main flex, sensors assembly, vibrator motor and loudspeaker.
Let’s see some details. There is no USB cover on Xperia Z4 anymore, but for waterproof, Sony applies waterproof rubber gasket around the USB port.
What’s more, there is a cover on the MIC.
That’s Sony Xperia Z4 motherboard.
We stop Sony Xperia Z4 disassmble here, have you know clearly about that phone?

[Q] Camera Module and Battery Cover issue, anyone experiencing the same?

I just got a S4 in Vietnam and currently having 2 hardware issues that I'm getting very annoyed once I know it's there:
1. The battery cover's camera hole is not fully matching with the camera module, I can see the space around the camera hole when the battery cover is put on is not even, there is more space on the above side of the hole and I believe after long usage, dusts can easily get into inside of the phone.
2. The camera module itself is not hard fixed, I can put my thumb on the surface of the camera module and try moving it around, I can feel and hear the "click-clack" sound and the module actually moving a bit around!
So I want to confirm if anyone having the same issues? Currently there are several other cases in Vietnam that having this same issue!
Together with the screen issue that mentioned by other people, I'm really disappointed with Samsung build quality with S4!
UPDATE: some images to illustrate my issues:
This is taken on my Black S4

The lens has a piece of plastic over it which on mine when pressed made a noise. I removed it by prying along the edge of the lens with my figernail, Others have done the same.

I know that piece of plastic and I took it out myself already, but that is not the issue that I'm having, you can try using your thumb and put it on the camera, then try playing/moving with it, if you can't feel it moving then good for you.
So I went to a service center today and the guy said the camera module is supposed to be like this lol

It's a rough microsoft paint job i did but the idea is a light stripe between the metal frame and the phone itself, either transparent or dark despending if light can show my friend helped me with the glow. Since i did all this in paint things are low resolutiond and offcentered the light would be able to show any colors anywhere as shown in the rainbow picture above
I also had an idea for something called hybrid resolution, that changes resolution to 4k if you connect a tv or if you want to watch a movie in 4k. you can also use 720p,1080,4k throughout the phone or you can have it automatically change to 1080p when you play a game or a movie.
so the 4k resolution would be optional when you want it so it's like a computer.
Screen size would be 4.7 inch and if that dosn't make sense 5 inch.
battery 3800 mah if that would fit
Each corner has a speaker it's hard to see but if you zoom in you can see bad speaker grills next to the power and volume buttons.
The idea is that the light stripe is invisible once off so it won't ruin the phones overall apperance, i hated the plastic on my z1 so i thought about replacing it with a light stripe like the sp just all around that can change colors everywhere, like red at the top blue at the bottm you also wouldn't be able to see every individual led dot so it would be a clear light.
It needs 10000mah battery

And a fifth speaker, gotta have that 4.1 in the phone you know!
i like your concept, aside of:
camera and xenon position needs to be just a little bit down-right.
xenon possibility is still very low - change xenon to dual LED flash.
"G lens" needs to be horizontal.
sony logo on the back needs to go back to it's original position like in the Z1.
front facing camera needs to go up to the center of the bezel or to the center-right.
add infra red eye next to the camera sensor like in the Japanese Z1 version.
sony won't compromise thickness for huge battery and 3800 mah won't fit your concept thickness because the phone is shielded from water and dust.
the glow doesn't fit the phone so much and seem a bit unnecessary also it would have to be oled light so it doesn't suck battery life. otherwise, a stripe on top front and back should be enough.
the glass needs to be shatter resistance or ditch the glass design for all aluminium back and sides - we don't want that annoying shatter film that makes the touch less responsive and is scratches easily - no pre installed shatter film SONY.

How to use your Xperia Z as your Motorbike-Navigation System

Hello there, this should probably not be worth an own topic, but i thought it could be helpful for others alike me, looking for a quick
and cheap solution to use your XPERIA Z on your Motorbike to Navigate through the Streets.
I first (sucessfully) attempted a "prototype" case in which i basically build up a "negative" case, that just flipped right over the Xperia Z and the Dockinstation, basically like a cassete-case:

}
But i had my doubts that it would probably not withstand a bigger fall (yet to happen ) and the the mini-usb Port on the Dockingstation would be prone to rain if not siliconized properly.
So... i kept looking around and probably found _THE_ sollution or more precisely the case that just fits the dockingstation and the xperia both inside and is sturdy enough to withstand a fall alike some mayor rain falling on top of it
It's the PELICAN 1040 Case!
I first had my doubts if the "grid-like" bars at the translucent front would allow to have a clear view, but yep, it absolutelly has, you just have to remove the sticker.
And then the Xperia-Z+Dockingstation fit in like its been designed just for this purpose, you just need a right-angled Micro-USB Cable as there isnt that much space to fit in a straight one.
Just drill a hole, push it trough the box so that it is centered as precise as possible and then plug in the dockingstation to see if everything fits okay.
Then clean everything with rubbing alcohol and after that apply enought silicon so that it sits in there and want come out that easy.
I used some sand-paper to grind it up a bit and give it more grip on both sides.
The way mount it unto your bike, depends on your bike and the way you like it most, i justed used some absolutelly standard Motorbike-Mount fixed by four screws (drilled trough the back of the pelican-box) that sits just in front of the spedo
Like this basically just thinner aluminum.
I will make some pictures as soon as iam able to get my hands on a secondary camera (wouldnt make sense to take a picture of an empty box with my xperia :silly:
Hope this might help someone, that is probably thinking about something similiar!

Z3 compact drop test. Get a Case guys!!!

I found this video on youtube. Be careful with the device. Here is the link

Seen this video. It's a re-upload of this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIFgcCoWEZs
Luckily I've also read (on here, I think) about someone who's z3c fell from a microwave oven onto the counter and then immediately onto a hard floor and it didn't have a scratch, so it's not like the glass is guaranteed to break.
But I will probably get me one of those crystal-clear hard cases when I buy a z3c
Mine suffered its first drop today, from about pocket height onto tile. Not a scratch. I can't even tell where it hit. I plan on going caseless, but buying a Worth Ave Group insurance policy for it.
this can happen to almost any device. A bad landing and it's gone. Others get dropped again and again without problems.
I always thought that the people moaning about the shatter-proof film were idiots. I have never had a problem with the shatter-proof film on my Z1 Compact and have dropped it several times. (I also installed the screen protector over the shatter proof film).
An even better solution I think is a phone design like the old Motorola RAZRm / RAZRi -- I think it is the best design style of any phone out there (and much better than the more recent Google-influenced Motorola designs). This phone has a metal rim at the edge which protruded slightly above the screen, giving it that extra bit of protection as well as preventing accidental touches to the screen. It also has a kevlar back so strong and grippy (not crappy glass that shatters and is slippy), and I've dropped the RAZRi more times than I can remember any only came away with scratches. It also has a nice ergonomic wedge design -- just such a pity that Motorola abandoned this design.

Question is. How many manufacturers have made cases for our Z3 Compact mobiles?
According to this, the Z3C has front and rear Gorilla Glass as well
http://www.wired.co.uk/reviews/mobile-phones/2014-09/sony-xperia-z3-compact
Not shatter proof, but good to know they haven't cheaped out

I wonder where they got that information though?
No idea, but Wired is reputable. Many of the other reviews also mention Gorilla Glass, though they don't specify if it's rear as well.
I guess Corning's marketing just works out so well that "Gorilla Glass" is widely used as a synonym for tempered glass. Anyway, I sent them a mail, maybe they'll back up that claim with a source.
Somebody on another thread mentioned Dragontrail glass which is similar I believe

Z3c teardown video

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I found this Z3c teardown video. No close-ups so it's hard to see much detail, but at least it gives a good idea of the guts of the phone and how it's assembled. And the back glass didn't crack when it was prized off!

I may not like the fact that this phone lacks a user-removable battery, however the ease of access to the battery itself is a relief.
I wonder how opening affects the waterproofing. I remember I opened by waterproof watch once to replace the battery and it was never fully waterproof after that.
I wonder how difficult it would be to add wireless charging...
1. Wow that's a big battery... no wonder
2. Teardown videos should really be in 1080p
@jug6ernaut There doesn't seem to be much room to play with, the QI receiver would have to be very slim. The one's I've had in the past had PCB components that would be too thick to fit in there. Anyone know which QI receiver is the slimmest? I love QI charging and plan on playing around with something DIY, but it will probably be something external case-based.
@banjker I too would like to know about the waterproofing. It looks like there's an insulated rubber strip around the edge, you can see it better in the Z3big teardown. They mangled it, but I'd imagine you could do it non-destructively by heating it up first.

Ok so with all these cases of cracking back glass it looks like it's quite easy to remove the back panel and replace it with a new one your self off eBay or somewhere?

Perhaps, but there's no indication of how easy it is to reattach the back and without the right foam/adhesive the phone will no longer be waterproof ( I doubt the existing foam can be saved, even by heating)
