Given, the current understanding of Fire HD, the prior instructions can be considered obsolete:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/root-supersu-stable-appstore-custom-t3113311
There is a more efficient way to get the latest GAPPS fully working, and the updates to Google Play Services no longer have to be blocked !!! Everything will be updated to the latest version. Thanks to DoLooper for helping to understand this point fully!!!
Note that the level of skill required to do this is a bit higher than just simply to get root.
0) get ADB drivers working on your PC, etc:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/root-supersu-stable-appstore-custom-t3113311
Tip: A quick way to debug your adb connectivity issues is to use USBDeView : http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
1) Determine your FireOS version, versions up to 4.5.3 are rootable, 4.5.4 will need to be upgraded to 5.0.2 and then downgraded to 4.5.3 :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-downgrade-to-4-5-3-root-device-t3139351
2) Disable OTA updates ( adb shell ; pm block com.amazon.dcp or "Debloater" http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294 ),
sideload Kingroot ( http://androidxda.com/download-kingroot-application ),
and let it root. Don't bother with SuperSu at this stage, you'll get it done later.
3) install TWRP
a) either sideload "Flashify" and download the flashable image here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347756852, for convenience I attached this img in this post as well,
or
b) use this app (if it works): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager&hl=en ).
There are some other tips in this original thread by JMZ:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fir...recovery-twrp-2-8-6-0-touch-recovery-t3129617
4) upgrade the FireOS to 4.5.4 with SuperSu and GAPPS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-4-5-4-twrp-root-t3141648
5) Optional: uninstall KingRoot app, to keep things tidy
Note that in step 4) the /system partition is formatted, so no junk from KingRoot in /system. It will still be in /data/app, so that's why you need step 5)
6) Now go explore the goodies offered by Xposed :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/twrp-xposed-modules-fire-hd-t3149990
For example, a popular request is to get wallpaper working, so read this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-wallpaper-custom-launcher-t3123009
2nd post :
I'll fill in some details as I get a few minutes here and there. For now everything is pretty schematic ...
has any one tried the newest kingroot 4.1.0.703 on 5.0.2, ( http://androidxda.com/download-kingroot-application )
I can confirmed KR 4.1 worked fine for me, still had no problem putting SuperSU on it and wiping /system.
[edit] Only 4.5.3, does not work on 4.5.4
Are you saying KR 4.1 will work on 4.5.4?
Thanks,
Mike
I Have tried the newest kingroot on 4.5.4 and 5 with no luck, still only 4.5.3
I've uploaded my 4.5.4 update file to a Dropbox, so now the upgrade to 4.5.4 is very straightforward, no need to mess with the repackaging, please see the relevant thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-4-5-4-twrp-root-t3141648

The posted instructions work like a charm. Thank you.
It worked like a charm, thanks ! :good:
However I have one problem, I can't get the Play Store Kindle app to work.
I have managed to find a hacked older version that works, that I have also sideloaded previously when it was unrooted.
At first, I've tried to install it through the Play store, it failed.
Then I tried to install it as an APK, it failed.
So I've decided to erase the Kindle app from /system/priv-apps (along with com.amazon.kindle.otter.apk), then it installed fine through Play Store, but the app simply crashes when launched. Any thoughts ?
BTW, why do I often see "Killed ads" popup ?
After following this and installing the update 4.5.4 zip and su zip I do not have a Nav bar anymore. Is anyone else experiencing this? It is very annoying to not have a back button or home button.

For stock Kindle to work, just keep your Amazon experience handy as per this thread (sometimes I go back to it just for kicks):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/fireos-4-5-x-root-quickly-switch-to-t3145613
Basically, when you re-enable all the Amazon stuff (and otter in particular), everything works as originally, including Kindle.

For the language choice, is it coming from the Amazon looking interface, or Google ? Basically, there is an annoying *otter*oobe*apk in priv-apps, which I blocked by renaming.
But this tell me that you made the update zip yourself? Perhaps, something else is messed up? Get my twrp update file, and re-load 4.5.4 again, it's pretty quick:

DoLooper's suggestion to unblock almost everything is good too.

I did use your update file that is when it all started. Now I am stuck at 5.2.0 developers preview with no root or twrp thinking I would be able to downgrade back to 4.5.3 but I can not for the life of me figure out what I should change the values too in the build.prop file to make my fire think that the downgrade zip is a more current update. I would appreciate any help. Also, I was putting everything back to stock with the adb commands and I never seen the nav bar.
No nav bar solved

I'm having the same issue. Everything worked fine for me up until I got to step 2), then things went astray.
See my [Q] posted in the Fire HD 6 and 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting forum.
Problem with driver in recovery mode
Hi
I have my Kindle 6" driver works fine when it's in normal mode. But when I put it in recovery mode by [adb reboot recovery], and install the 4.5.3, my computer doesn't recognize the device anymore. I check in the Windowns Device manager, it becomes [ other devices > KFARWI ]. and when I type adb devices, nothing shows up.
Please help
Don't have it in front of me but steps are like this: Right-Click KFARI/update/browse (forget name of choice, but not auto) /let me pick from list/ scroll to your installed driver and click it.

Thank you! I got it fixed by this way.
Also, I have successfully rooted my kindle 6. Then I used JMZ to install gapps, and go to play store to download Youtube. But when I open utube, it asked me to update google play service. When I tried to update google play services, it pops up an error "Insufficient storage available".
Can you suggest me a solution for this ! (I already tried to clear cache, and I still have 4GB storage)

It means space in /system. Get DiskUsage app to easily see free space in /System. If you have a lot--close to 1 Gb, say--I'm not sure problem. But try deleting some fat apps or move to /data. (Get an app that converts system apps to user apps. Rom Toolbox works.) I deleted the office program (mOffice, i think it's called), and converted Maps and Weather.

It has been less than 12 hours since this was discovered (thanks to @rb11701) but potentially big news to those with 3rd gen devices that will not be receiving FireOS v5.
It appears FireOS v4.5.5.1 can be directly rooted with Kingroot! This greatly simplifies the process of obtaining root for those running FireOS > 4.5.2. Simply allow the device to update to 4.5.5.1 via normal OTA and then root.
There are early reports that Safestrap v4 and GAaps (Play Store) also work on 4.5.5.1. More testing is needed, especially wrt Safestrap. I strongly recommend against installing one of the Safestrap compatible custom roms until further testing has been done.
One thing you should immediately do after rooting 4.5.5.1 is block over-the-air (OTA) updates in the event a successor to 4.5.5.1 removes root and closes the vulnerability that Kingroot exploits. Instructions here.
Please note these are early reports. It may not work with all devices. There may be hidden 'gotchas'. All your hair might fall out. Amazon may have installed secret trackers in 4.5.5.1 that transmit your whereabouts to their secret base on Mars (built by Curiosity in cooperation with NASA) before bricking your device. Go in with eyes open.

Well - you took your device into uncharted territory and may have paid the price. Safestrap v4 is not a true recovery environment. It was developed with one purpose in mind: host a small subset of roms on FireOS v4 that otherwise could not be installed.
Flashing (injecting) GApps into FireOS with Safestrap v4 is untested and therefore risky. It is also possible there is an unknown incompatibility/conflict between FireOS 4.5.5.1 and GAaps; I think that unlikely, at least one severe enough to keep your device from booting. That said, the presence of Safestrap v4 throws in a wildcard.
The symptoms you describe mirror those following a 'factory reset' from the native recovery menu. If accurate there is no known recovery.
Have you tried to access the device via adb?
i tried factory reset in kindle os menu but nothing happend...
is their a solution to to factory reset with adb?
UPDATE: now i am in a factory reset Loop..... i can select the language... an than kindle tried wifi Connection... than black Screen and select language again... and so on....
Hi,
I tried Kingroot it on my 4th gen HDX 8.9 with FireOS 4.5.5 installed and it worked fine.
Followed these instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59160158&postcount=1 to disable OTA and instalL GApps.
I can install stuff from the play store, use Chrome. So far so good !
Thanks to the rooting gods!

No - but if you can get the device to identify itself via adb there is the (slim) potential for a future solution. It's a shelf item for now; sorry for your loss.

First time I have heard of that approach working! Thanks for sharing.
Do you still have Safestrap v4 installed? It sounds like FireOS may have been 'damaged'. One path would be to reinstall (replace) FireOS with a known good version (4.5.2) but that requires Safestrap. Note - I'm not suggesting you reinstall SS if it is not present as you may end up in the same situation as before. Have to act with caution as your device does not have a true recovery. You need a functioning OS to commence most recovery/repair operations.

Thank you. Suggest holding off on Safestrap and custom roms for now. If you are following the conversation there have been some issues (albeit somewhat unique). Also consider whether FireOS v5 (lollipop based) would be a better long term choice. It's not bad...ran it for several weeks before switching to CM12 on a 5th gen Fire. Too soon to say if other LP options may become available for 4th gen devices.

Count your blessings!
Question: What is your long term goal: FireOS v4 w/Play Store or any ROM that supports the Play Store? If the latter I would give consideration to Nexus v4 or CM-11. Both run under Safestrap v4 and offer a complete android experience with full access to Google Services and applications. Difference between the two boils down to eye candy and a few obscure functions geared toward enthusiasts. I can provide further guidance (if desired) with a better idea of where you want to be.
my first Goal was... Google Playstore... but that dont work correct with this package

The method of using "supersume", doesn't work surely. I tried it personally.
And the other link u provided is for replacing kingroot with supersu only.
I made this thread for people to get the whole procedure at the same place, no need to Google more.
Hope you understand ?
And ur question is really appreciated ?

Doesn't work for me. Did everything exactly like you said, but trying to update supersu binaries didnt work.
I then rebooted and got a soft brick until I wipe dalvik and cache from recovery.

Bro now tell me, is that problem still exists.
If yes.
U can just flash system using Twrp backup.
And then follow the procedure again but with a new version of kingroot.
Bro this method is personally used by myself, and always works for me. You can check the images.zip file. That is my own phone.
No fake things, my only motive.
????
What do you mean does it still exist. I literally just tried it yesterday.
I used the newest version of Kingroot and still that happened, but then again I dont use stock rom so that is probably interfering with it.
I probably just stick with Kingroot, it doesnt seem so bad.

With Barnes & Noble now selling the Galaxy Tab S2 710 (32gb) for $299 in the U.S. (and an extra 10% off if you're a B&N member), I picked one up yesterday and immediately came here to research rooting and set up. What I found were a lot of guides written a while ago, and a lot of confusing (at least to me) information. So I thought I would consolidate, in one place, in a new thread, what I eventually did, on the assumption that there might be a lot of new Tab S2 owners in the coming weeks. Obviously, you undertake these steps at your own risk, and YMMV. Also, hopefully equally obviously, none of the fantastic tools here are original with me -- credit goes to all those, like chainfire, ashyrx, wanam, engine95 and many more who have built and/or developed them.
1. If your Tab comes with anything but 5.1.1 XXU2BPB1, feel free to take the OTA update. In the US, it's the most current build as of 4.30.16 and you will still be able to root.
2. If you don't already have it, download Odin 3.10.7. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
When you run Odin in Windows, probably better to run it in administrator mode (right click on the icon), although I haven't always found that to be necessary.
3. Flash a Custom Recovery using the PDA tab of Odin. Put your Tab into Download mode by turning it off, then pressing and holding the Home, Power and Volume Down buttons all at the same time. When the download screen comes up, press the Volume Up button to continue. Now you're ready to attach your Tab to your PC. Load TWRP 3.0.2-1 from Ashyx's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-7-x-lollipop-5-1-1-t3205686 into Odin. Follow his instructions carefully -- once the custom recovery flashes, you have to manually reboot into the new recovery (so untick the auto-reboot option in Odin) or else your new custom recovery gets overwritten and you go back to your stock recovery.
4. Backup your Stock Rom -- While you're still in TWRP (or if you've already rebooted, go back to it), it would make sense to do a full backup of your stock ROM. That way you can restore your Tab to its original state if you ever need or want to.
5. Root -- Here's where I found the most confusion on these forums. You can do a systemless root -- i.e., keeping a stock, SE Enforcing, kernel (as opposed to flashing a permissive kernel and always getting the red SE Noneforcing Kernel message on a reboot and/or needing to use CF-Auto-Root). All you need to do is install Super SU 2.71 (BETA). Get the zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133 and put it on your Tab. Then flash using the "Install" choice within your TWRP recovery. Reboot -- and when TWRP asks you whether you want to install SuperSU because you're not rooted -- you have to say "NO" (OK, that's counterintuitive, but chainfire's instructions are clear).
5. Debloat -- That's beyond this thread's scope, but I recommend Titanium Backup from the Play Store. If you want to get rid of the "Nook" logo on reboot, flash the zip file from post #2 of Engine95's thread (using TWRP) found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/rom-neked-nook-oj1-5-1-1-710-t3317823
6. SD Card Fix -- if you find your third party apps can't write to your SD Card, the attachment below describes how to fix it. If this type of editing scares you (make a backup first!), the Play Store app SD Card Fix supposedly still works with Lollipop and you can try that.
7. Netflix Fix -- for some reason, Netflix doesn't like root on the Nook Tab. The fix for this is as simple as renaming the file "system/lib/liboemcrypto.so" (using a root explorer of your choice) as "system/lib/liboemcrypto.so.bak"
8. Xposed -- I happen to like Xposed and don't find it messes up anything, while giving you a ton of customization options. Installation is a two-step process. First, find the correct version of wanam's Xposed zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3180960, and flash it using TWRP. For Lollipop on the S2, I used his SDK 22-arm version (SDK 23 is for Marshmallow). Don't worry if the reboot takes a long time -- that's normal. Then, once rebooted, simply install wanam's Xposed apk (XposedInstaller_3.0_Alpha4) that's available in the same thread.
That's it. I hope this saves some of you a lot of my trial and error, and, if it does, please press the "thanks" button.
EDIT -- Here's a #9 I just discovered --- Microsoft Office apps, although pre-installed on the device, will not open once you're rooted (or maybe it's just flashing TWRP that does it). Moreover, if you uninstall and try a re-install from the Play Store, if you're like me, you'll get a device not compatible message. My solution was to sideload the apks (e.g., Word, Excel and Powerpoint) from my Note 4, but I suspect you could also change your device ID within your build.prop file (backup first!) and get a similar result.
ANOTHER EDIT (5.2.16) -- #10 -- I can't get Google Play Movies to work at all on my T710 after rooting. Tried renaming libemcrypto.so without luck. Tried editing boot.prop to disguise myself as a Nexus 10. Tried the Xposed module Root Cloak. All no good. Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks! I just got a new nook and have started to come into these forums and also noticed the old and randomly updated threads. I appreciate the clear instructions. Are there any roms right now that you are recommending?

Sorry, I'm trying to stick with stock. Engine95's rom seems to have some happy users though....
how do you manual reboot to recovery mode after download mode? i have tried the (pwr+vol up+home) but it does not work at all.. once i reboot normally the TWRP which i flashed cannot get installed at all. I need HELP!
Hey guys, just bought a Oneplus 5 in China and want to change from hydrogenOS to OxygenOS and also install Google Apps
I've followed all the steps to flashing a rom using a USB connection. I've downloaded ADB, TWRP, ect and enabled developer tools/ allowed bootloading and usb unbugging.
However, after i run command prompt and reboot into bootloader using "adb reboot bootloader" and attempt to flash the twrp.img file, I get the following error:
writing 'twrp'....
FAILED (remote: Flashing is not allowed in Lock State)
however, did I not already unlock the bootloader from the dev tools section of settings on the phone?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Sorry if some of the things I said don't make sense I'm a beginner, let me know if you have any questions.
You need to unlock the bootloader first. Boot into fastboot, and type: fastboot oem unlock
This will wipe your data!
After that, boot into fastboot again, and type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Good luck! Hope i helped

turning on the "OEM unlocking" setting in "Developer options" only enables unlocking the bootloader.. this setting does not do the unlock itself..
to actually unlock the bootloader, you should follow what my previous post suggested, i.e., do the following commands..
first, in a computer command prompt, enter:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
the in bootloader mode, enter
fastboot oem unlock
and follow the on-screen instructions..
all you data will be wiped after the 2nd command..
Have you managed to install the ROM? My problem is about activating the phone, after the very first boot. In China it's not possible to connect to google, and I do not manage to pass this first setup process.

I managed to find a solution by myself. No adb method would work, but entering in emergency call: *#812# has fixed my problem.

Hey guys. I actually managed to get OxygenOS and Play Store on my China OnePlus 5.
Just do a google search "OnePlus 5 OxygenOS Global Rom"
Download the latest OxygenOS on their site.
Put the zip file in your internal storage.
After you have done that, reboot into OnePlus 5 recovery mode.
Press whatever language you guys are comfortable in
Install through internal storage.
Select the zip file and wait for a couple of minutes.
It will then restart by itself and you're done.
Tell me if yours work. Good luck!
In certain chinese site famous in Italy, I read that download the latest OOS rom and flash it through the "update" page on settings lead to a simple flash of all the rom
(choose manual update and select the fullzip)
Partially Working

I had a similar issue today after I flashed hydrogen os. Solution is rather simple. Sideload the google gms apk, latest version and google play store. Now download google installer and install the apps using the installer. Once this is done, just manually install the 2 mentioned apk's and it should work like magic. Let mW know if you need the files.

You need to plug in USB, then on the phone notification change from "Charging Only" to "Transfer Files" mode. Also, you maybe need to enable USB debugging in developer options (google it, super easy).

I got it working after installing "googler installer apk". It will only work if you are using a VPN (assuming you are in China, otherwise you won't need one). Just run it once, and accept the permissions. At the third or fourth point through it will stop working, but it doesn't matter because the fix has been applied in the first and second step.
After running this App, just run Google Playstore and you can login without problems.
Problem solved much simple. Is very important, after install the "global rom .zip" via stock Recovery, when finished have to select WIPE Data RESET. Doing this reset, Google Play is working from first try. Without doing this reset, have to install Google installer apk same described above.
Timduru's KatKiss MM 6.0.1 ROM running stable with no bootlooping GUIDE
As many of you know that have tried to bring your TF101 back to life with timduru's KatKiss 6.0.1 ROM. I've been working with this tablet for about the past week and finally got this thing running stable with the play store and has not bootlooped once.
First all credit to timduru for this rom. All I did was figure out a way to get play store on it without all the rebooting. Now that I've got this thing running stable it's definitely a clean ROM and very fast and efficient. The actuall KatKiss thread has a bajillion posts and way too much reading, and since it's the most updated ROM that people are likely to be using or wanting to use I made this thread/guide so you all can enjoy it also without the bootlooping.
YOU'LL NEED A LINUX VIRTUAL MACHINE OR COMPUTER. I used Ubuntu 18.04.
1.)First of all, if you don't already have the ROM and SuperSU you can download it from timduru's thread
KatKiss 6.0.1 by timduruSuperSU BETA 2.52 from timduru's thread2.)Do a fresh install of the ROM from TWRP
3.)Install the F-Droid app
4.)In F-Droid Settings, Enable "Expert Mode" and "Unstable Updates"
5.)Add a repository for MicroG "https://microg.org/fdroid/repo" leave fingerprint blank
6.)From F-Droid search and install
a.)microG Services Coreb.)microG Service Framework Proxyc.)Apple UnifiedNlp Backendd.)NominatimNlpBackendNow is when you have to break open your linux machine...
7.) Make sure you have ADB and fastboot setup properly
PHP:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
8.) Then we're going to use ale5000's "tingle" from GitHub to achieve signature spoofing. The method posted using Haystack no longer works.
PHP:
git clone https://github.com/ale5000-git/tingle
sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python3 p7zip-full default-jre android-tools-adb
sudo apt install python
9.) Once it's all setup connect your tablet to your Linux machine via USB. MTP mode and enable USB debugging.
10.)
PHP:
cd tingle
python main.py
Select "1" and press enter
11.)Let the commands do their thing, it may take 2-3 minutes, it'll finish automatically. Once done reboot tablet
12.)Open MicroG Settings in your app drawer
a.)Tap “Permission Missing” and give all permissionsb.)Enable “Google device registration”c.)Enable “Google Cloud Messaging”d.)Go in “UnifiedNlp Settings”, tap both “location backend” and “address lookup backends” and enable the backends there.e.)Go back to the main menu of microG Settings and goto “Self-Check”, check “Battery optimizations ignored”You'll know everything's set up right if you see "System Spoofs Signature is checkmarked on its own
13.)Download the latest Play Store APK and rename it to "com.android.vending.apk"
14.) Then in terminal, be in the same directory as the location of the play store apk you downloaded and run these commands
PHP:
adb remount
adb shell mkdir /system/priv-app/Phonesky
adb push com.android.vending.apk /system/priv-app/Phonesky/
15.) Reboot and log in to Play Store with no issues.
All credits to timduru for the rom and leading me down the path of searching for working signature spoof options. and credit to ale5000 for his tingle program. I hope this helps all of you. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Thank you for the great guide.
Does Google Play Store works well after all those steps? (Self-Check in microG shows all marks checked)
I've authorized properly but it shows "Error retrieving information from server. DF-DFERH-01" after.
Great guide. Quick question. When you say download googleplay apk, which version? Where from? Is this the genuine google play store or G-apps? Going to try this at home tonight.
great guide
has anyone had any luck with this? personally I can't open any apps downloaded from playstore
Also get a message after boot:" Nominatim Geocoder Backend isn't responding"
ANy hint on how to update Android Webview
Chrome and other apps do not work
Thnx! Works great
Chrome v 49 works well for me.. the later ones crashes.
Got use for the old device again..
Just installed this...(without playstore)
Now what apps do you guys recommend for smooth video and web browsing and file managers?
And where do you download from ?
hello, just went through the whole process and my tf101 works but: cant get play store to work, every time i sign in i get a message that tells me i have already signed in and the play store will not open up. by play store I mean com.android.vending.apk , and I used my laptop running Mint to push every script in the order and directory as described in this post. before closing I would like to thank aarron and Timduru and others like them for the hard work that has let me make my phones and this tf101 something really special and blast to use. btw, the tf101 does work, and no bootloops!
Hey, I just went through your tutorial and everything seems to be working perfectly. Great job and thank you!!!
Dusted off my old tf101 and tried this set up and I was not able to get playstore working, went back to the old setup with v 6.0 and g-apps and back to boot loop, I will attempt the whole set up again. Thank you for your works guys.
I also tried this guide, I'm able to install apps from the Google Play store, but almost every app that I try to open made the TF101 crash and reboot. For some apps by google, it goes into bootloop. Similar issues also for apps installed via F-Droid. @aaron2z I'm wondering if this guide is still valid and if there is a specific version of Google play and other apps such youtube and hangout that are supposed to be used in order to avoid bootloop.
Thanks

Hi !
I tried this great guide. Thank you !
Despiste this guide, I have problems with apps from Google Play Store : self-boot, bootloops.
I'm trying to install APK apps directly without Google Play Store. TF101 seems to be stable, for the moment...
Hi!
I also got the bootloop and google play errors, so I decided to go without google services. Formatted, installed ROM and SU, wiped dalvik and cache. Everything goes smoothly, but when I try to install the K.A.T. app, I get a "Can't open file" message. Same thing with any other apk. Of course I don't have a file manager installed, and it's the first thing I wanted. I tried to install it by browsing to my apk using the "hidden" file explorer (in Settings under Storage and USB), then I also tried to download the apks using the browser and opening from there, but I always get that same message. Of course I have the Unknown sources enabled under Security (it is enabled by default on this ROM apparently).
And now I don't have access to my Ubuntu box (F*** Coronavirus).
I don't mind having to download the apps and install them manually (as opposed to through Google), but if I cannot install anything, then there's not much I can do with the tablet :-/
Anyone has a clue what's going on? I'm sure I'm overlooking a small detail, but I'm just wondering what it is... Apparently I cannot open apk files with the buit-in file manager, but there's nothing else I can use to open files. And I can't install another file manager since I cannot install apk's...

Hello,
I installed "simple file manager" with fdroid
Thanks. I tried to download fdroid, but same thing, couldn't install the apk. For anyone interested, I just used ADB to sideload the apks I wanted. Once I've installed a file manager, I can install apks from wherever.
Hey,
Does somebody has an idea to update webview ? Some webpages don't render well or don't even work ..
Thanks
I dusted off my tf101 last week and attempted to go through the steps to get TWRP and get the newest possible rom which seems to be katkiss 6.
Well I tried using adb commands through powershell on my pc and also tried installing the TWRP app so it would help install the custom recovery but i can't seem to get this to work. The threads I tried to follow on here for installing a recovery are all over the place and seem to gloss over step by step instructions so I am stuck. This is only my second device that I have ever attempted to install a custom rom onto. The first one was my 2012 nexus 7 which went smooth and easy without any problems so I was thinking the tf101 would be easy enough as well since I already cut my teeth on the nexus, lol. All I know right now that I can tell you is my tf101 is running android 4.0.3 from 2012 and I haven't ever tried anything with it until now except I did do a factory wipe/reset last week during the process of trying to figure things out. The TWRP app doesn't seem to work with the tf101 and it does say "device not rooted" at one point when backing out of a menu option. I read that the tf101 isn't required to be rooted and does not have a locked bootloader though. Is this correct? Should I be trying a different custom recovery?

Hey,
To install the custom recovery, you have to put your tablet into the APX mode.
For that, you have to connect your tablet in USB to your PC then, switch on the tablet while pressing on VOLUME +
The screen will remain black it's normal. Your PC will detect the tablet, You're now in APX mode.
Now you just have to use this tool https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012 and it will flash an old version of TWRP, just use that recovery to flash the latest version of TWRP and you're done !

Okay I installed the Easyflasher 0.8.3 a little while ago and then I believe I was able to get the tf101 into APX mode by holding the power and volume up buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds. My PC made the little connection noise for stuff plugged into a usb port so I assume that meant that APX mode was active. The screen was still off on the tf101. Then I opened Easyflasher and let it flash TWRP 2.2.1 and it said "finished, now boot into recovery!"
This didn't work. I restarted the tf101 and held down power and volume down until the prompt for pressing volume up to start up the custom recovery kernel. The android bot picture shows up and there is a loading bar underneath but then after a few seconds he is on his back with the red "!" triangle and the progress bar is gone. Tried this with both versions of the easyflasher modes for tf101 S/N that are below and above B70. Neither one worked. hmm
