Nexus 7 2012 rooting, is it worth it? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just purchased a 2012 16gb version of the Nexus 7... Tablet is like new condition, recently upgraded to Lollipop 5.1.1... Have always heard really great things about this tablet and so far I'm not impressed!! From reading on several forums, it appears that lollipop ruined this tablet.. I have no idea since I owned it for less than 2 hours before updating to Lollipop...
So my question : Is this tablet worth rooting? Will performance improve?
Haven't rooted a device in a Looooooooooooooooooooong time... What's the best guide to achieving root and installing a custom rom?
the tablet doesn't have to be perfect but man right now, it sucks donkey balls, Facebook doesn't work at all, so I uninstalled it and it's constantly lagging or freezing..
Thank you in advance

Huh? Where did you hear that?
This tablet is infamous for having the worst NAND ever.
And yes, rooting will give this tablet a new life. Either stay stock on 4.1.x or install a custom rom with system and cache partition formatted as F2FS.
You don't really need a guide. Just get the Nexus Root toolkit and format F2FS from TWRP itself.

Thank you... I just decided that I wanted a tablet about a year ago.. I wanted to install a tablet in my car.. The nexus 7 is the most popular tablet next to the iPad BUT I realize now that the tablet that's always featured in the installs is the 2013 version and NOT the one I have, and mostly because of its wireless charging capabilities making optimal for installation choices... Oh well, I never wanted the wireless charging option anyway I prefer to make a slid in dock...after posting this I continued to investigate and looks like achieving root is rather simple and I hope this saves this tablet, as I said it doesn't have to be perfect just better than its been... Thank you for your reply... By the way even now when I read reviews of this tablet, the reviews ARE saying that this otherwise good tablet was ruined by lollipop

[Q] best way to root 4.1.2?

Hello, my girlfriends new Nexus 7 for some reason wont update to 4.2, its stuck on 4.1.2. So whats the best way to root it on 4.1.2? And afterwards, its possible to flash 4.2 on it, correct? Ive rooted a couple of different phones and customized them, but I want to make 100% sure I dont screw up her second love lol. Thanks for the help!:cyclops:

sorry, meant 4.2 LOL
Try Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit. It does a great job and walks you through each step.
thats the one I was looking at! I wasnt sure if I should use that one, or the other Toolkit, but the other one seemed a little more confusing. Thanks!
Wugfresh worked great for me this weekend.
The only unexpected headache was having to deal with device driver issues since I was rooting the n7 on a laptop that I used to root my Galaxy tab a year ago. There were 6-7 Samsung drivers that I had to remove and then reboot the laptop.
Still an easy process but the driver situation made the process take longer than expected (maybe an hour total).
Still, a lot faster and more newb friendly than rooting in 2009

Toolkits are fail. Learn to use adb and fastboot. That way you can be sure of exactly what your doing to your phone and fix it if necessary. It may sound daunting at first but in the long run it's much better.

Completely agree with this...
-----------
Hi, zidane1341...
Rooting is really simple.
(You will need an unlocked bootloader for this).
Get a custom recovery .img for your device...
Either CWM - http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
...or TWRP - http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/103
...it matters little which.
-----------
fastboot flash it.
-----------
Get Chainfires SU .zip package here http://download.chainfire.eu/310/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip
Flash it using the custom recovery you've just fastboot flashed...
Reboot... and you're rooted.
-----------
Having said all that though, I don't see how root will facilitate an upgrade of your girlfriends N7 from 4.1.2 to 4.2...
For that you will need the factory stock image for your device, available here http://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images.
There is a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796, that details how to flash factory stock images.
-----------
On a final note... it's kind of puzzling why your girlfriends N7 isn't being automatically upgraded to 4.2.
When I flash back to stock, (as I do, from time to time), I use JOP40C (4.2) and as soon as I get a WiFi connection, I get 'nagged' about upgrading to JOP40D (4.2.1), which I always allow. And it does so without problems.
If your girlfriends N7 is running (even at the slightest level) a modified version of JellyBean, then the automated update procedure from Google's servers will fail.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Well I know from personal experience, after I rooted my optimus I could upgrade to a newer version of android, I can just flash 4.2 after rooting correct? I called Asus and they said to send it in, but they didn't know what was wrong. My girlfriend is pretty mad about that, so I was thinking I could bypass that by doing it myself.

just bought the old N7 32gb for just under $200 last week. Decided that I don't need that much space and would rather have the better hardware so I'm returning the first gen and getting the latest 16gb version! :good:
Not sure if I missed it, but it should be noted that unlocking the bootloader wipes ALL your data!
Has anyone tried this using Clockwork instead of TWRP? Not a big fan of TWRP

If I just bought a nexus 7 from best buy today, do I have the 2013 version? I assume I do? Also, probably dumb question, but I assume 2013 nexus won't work with nexus 7 roms/kernels?

If you're serious about these questions then yes, it's the new one. You probably should have done your homework before even buying it if you had to ask after you bought it. Best Buy never even carried last years model.
No.. Don't use anything from the original N7 unless you want a nice heavy paper weight.
My suggestion would be to start reading everything on the 2013 model very carefully in these forums before you attempt to flash anything.
I'm not trying to be rude, but the above are how people get in messes. Especially if they have to ask the community what they bought.

Lol I look like an absolute fool. When I bought it I didn't think there was a new one, but after some research, I figured out that I obviously have it haha
I have read through all of the threads regarding root and will root it later tonight. My previous comment made me look like a complete noob, but I assure you I have rooted phones for years and understand the goings on. I was just confused at the time because as I said I didn't know there was a new model, I thought it was a firmware update or something.
I can't wait to see this attract devs that can bring amazing kernels and roms
No No Kernel Optimized Galaxy S3
you mention "fastboot.exe" in the video, but where do we get that? I keep getting "ADB not recognized as a command" when I type the command in the window.
Never mind... I figured it out... I wasn't navigating to the platform-tools folder before opening the command window. I'm now unlocked & rooted

Just bought a Nexus 7!

I'm excited to say that I have finally invested in a tablet and decided to go with the Nexus 7 that I bought for a GREAT price! I am curious about rooting and s-off etc. I was curious if there was any information that I needed to be aware of in regards to not being able to root or s-off with updates. I would really like to have a smooth experience with accomplishing root on my Nexus but I know there could be some bumps in the road . Any information or links to threads etc. are much appreciated, I haven't unboxed yet just due to the fact that I want to make sure I can root it without it auto updating something.
Thanks In Advance
Very easy to root using nexus root toolkit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389107
Just be sure the toolkit updates itself to latest version.
You need to first "unlock the bootloader". I would recommend to do that in the beginning because it will wipe your device.
Personally i had best experience with stock kitkat 4.4.4 rooted and all unneccessary software disabled. I dont like volume adjustment on lollipop 5.0.2 but i always update to latest version just for fun.
Congratulations for your new tablet, it is a great device!
Thanks for the link and the info, any recommendations on roms/kernals? I'm new to the Nexus series so I am not familiar with any of the development/developers.
IMHO the best thing with Nexus is you'll always get the latest official rom. I have only used stock but feel free to experiment.
On my phone with 4.4.4 I use stock with xposed framework. Some great modules there. However i read that xposed is not yet ready for 5.0.2.

I suggest the elementalx kernel. And if you want a (improved) stock experience go for Cleanrom.
From what I remember from my HTC Wildfire days, S-OFF = Unlocking the bootloader.
If I'm wrong, can someone explain the difference
Thanks.

Can you confirm something. When did you get your Nexus 7 and from where. There have been problems with recently released Nexus 7 tabs from Groupon, Frys, and Best Buy that have made things difficult to do things like flash. There was a revision in google/asus latest batch that makes mounting any partitions/memory difficult.

Unlock is no problem, Wugs can get you there but not root. you need cf-auto root to achieve that.

Just out of curiosity, and to just make sure we are all on the same page. You got the 2013 (2nd gen) Nexus 7, correct? Being this is your first Nexus Device, and tablet if you weren't aware there is a Nexus 7 2012, and 2013.
Probably a dumb question, but don't want to link you to all these things and have you brick your Nexus because it was the wrong gen. Enjoy, thing is awesome.

Its been a month... So I assume you are sorted but in case you aren't... To ensure cleanest install, wipe data and cache through twrp then flash new ROM. This will delete your data so back it up first if there is anything you want on it.
If ROM is from same family.... You can try dirty flashing ( ie not wiping data ) but it may end in boot loop or force closes in apps... I always just wipe as it ensures clean install to give you best experience with the ROM.
Enjoy

Real newbie help needed

Hi all
I know you probably get this a lot but could really do with some help.
Basically my wife has a nexus 7 2012 and it's become unusable now since lollypop. I have tried factory reset etc but it's still so slow. I have decided I'd like to delve into the rooting game and see if this will solve the problem.
I have a nexus 7 2013 so if I am honest if I brick it then I won't be devastated because she can always use mine so decided to bite the bullet and try.
I am not expecting a walk through guide but is there any good way to try and start this? I am quite techy but I know nothing about rooting let alone where to start.
I kind of understand roms and I want a basic one that will make her nexus workable again.
Any help on how I go about starting this whole rooting would be appointed.
Thanks all
Chris
Are you on 5.1.1? If not get that update fixed my 2012 & 2013 right up! If not, search for "nexus root tool kit". That's what I use without a hitch! But try the update first, it may just do the trick.
? Here there be Whales ?
Thanks and yea I'm on 5.1.1 I'll search that thanks

An easy way to root is by using the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh, a good rom to try is chroma also mkernel works well with the stock rom. Make sure you make a backup before you start flashing anything .
How do you back up?

Re-purpose Nexus 7 as a Dedicated Comic Reader

Hi there. So I've got a Nexus 7 (2012 WiFi) that I've had since launch. It's obviously quite old now and thus it's incredibly slow. I had issues updating it to the latest version of Android that was made available by Google for it to the point that I had to sideload the update using adb. Basically, the reason I even bought it in the first place was to use it as a dedicated digital comic reader. So that's kinda what I want to use it for going forward. But in its current state, it's just so slow and sketchy, I'm hoping to flash a new ROM or some kind of custom stripped-down version of Android with just the basics to extend the life of the device. The size is great and the screen still looks great, but many stock features are no longer necessary for my purposes. If anyone has any suggestions on a good way to strip down features to improve performance, or advice on a good ROM that's been known to greatly improve the performance of this dated device, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I know I risk the wrath of the purists here but Wugs Nexus root toolkit or the Skipsoft one are handy. If you want to truly get down to the nuts and bolts you can do as the purists suggest and use the ADB /Fastboot command interface in the Android software development kit.
You will use one of those to install a custom recovery such as TWRP. You will then download the rom (and gapps) if not already included. You may also need SuperSU to handle root management. You flash roms, gapps, etc. through TWRP.
Thanks for the response. I'm just about finished my Root + TWRP with Wug's kit.
Coming from the stock nakasi-lmy47v-factory (5.1.1)
So I think at this point, I've:
-unlocked the bootloader
-installed TWRP 3.1.0-0-grouper.img
-Rooted using SuperSU v2.79-SR3
Just based on what I've done, and my intention to flash a custom version of Pure Nexus, my rooting may have been redundant for now and will need to be done again?
I guess the next thing I need to determine is if I need to flash a new Kernel. I'm currently using 3.1.10-gf5d7b8b stock Kernel.
Oh, and decide if I should switch to F2SF.
I've successfully got Pure Nexus running with Parrot Mod installed, and it's running beautifully! I opted not to bother switching to F2FS, but may take a look in the future. Thank you so much wtherrell for all your help!
