I Made a Guide to Xperia/WinMo - Comments, Suggestions?

Hi everybody,
I recently completed an extensive guide to the Xperia and Windows Mobile in general. Most of the info might be old news if you're an experienced user, but hopefully there's something in there for everyone. If nothing else, it may be convenient to have all the elemental stuff gathered in one place.
I have tried to compile the best and most common tweaks and customizations, essential software in seven different categories, the many user-interfaces and how to get them, various modifications and some of the highlights from here (XDA Classics), et cetera. I did my best to include as much as possible, and the guide will continue to grow.
Here it is if you want to have a look:
A Guide to Windows Mobile
I put a lot of effort into this and I would really appreciate some feedback, what do you think of it?
I hope you'll find the guide useful.
Thanks --Lars
I am reading it now. You have done an excellent job mate.
This could be the perfect way to beginners to tweak their X1 without doing all the testings we did, with all the hard resets and restore of our backups we did to get all this... If you keep it up to date with all the new software, this could be the ultimate guide to the X1
Great Work!!!
Kudos! Check it out: http://xperiancer.blogspot.com/2009/04/he-made-guide-for-xperiawinmo.html
WoW!
This is a great guide
Keep up the good work
Excellent job - clear and comprehensive.
Comforting to note that I have already come across many of the tips and tweaks, but there are still a few new ones, for which I'm grateful to you.
On the profiles issue, my recommendation would be Phone Weaver - it costs a bit of money, but that is money well spent if you ask me. Highly configurable, very stable, and does the job very nicely thank you very much.
I'm going to have to investigate the JBed font size tweak though - I don't have a "Device Info" folder in the registry so there is no Java Font setting to change.
Thanks great job It will be great to create a wiki ! ;D
I would like to second the well done comments posted here and I have some suggestions. The trend in WM is for big one size fits all interfaces like TF3D and Point UI etc. While such interfaces are nice to look at they dont offer much opporutunity for user customisation, you can change a background and thats bout it.
I am a fan of the Previous system used on the today screen where users select plug-ins and configure them to there own tastes. The two I use most are HomeScreen ++ Floyd theme and TodayGif, all of which had there roots on this site.
How about a list of open source freeware Today Screen Plug-ins that users can customise and change, for users like myself who resent being put in a software straight jacket like TF3D. Other manufacturers like Samsung and Nokia and iphone, are going down the plug-in or widget route, increasing user customisation, while WM seems to be moving in the opposite direction, away from the more flexible, more customisable previous plug-in system.
Thats my 2P, once again good job.
i like the site, very useful!
A big THANK YOU for your work!
I just hoped to find such a great summary of profound knowledge here in the Wiki for the X1.
Once more: Great work! Keep it up!
I’m very glad for all the positive feedback, thank you!
I will make a news box at the top of the page with recent updates and additions, since my ambition is to add all things of interest that I come across to the guide.
msalmank: I appreciate the blog post, cheers
Mr Anderson: I installed the trial version of Phone Weaver, seems like a really good utility for profiles (if not the best of the bunch) - I’ll add it to the guide.
Mark A Cilenti: I intentionally left out the minor Today Plug-ins because I thought they would be of less interest, but I agree: there should be such a section as well.
remixtech: Even though you had a little wink smiley after your wiki suggestion, I took it as a dare and I will make a wiki version of the guide as well that anyone can contribute to (even though chance is no one will write in it)
Thanks again, folks. I'm off to bed
wow this is awesome!
Brilliant! Thank you for your hard work, i've found it very useful.
Altough I am already aware of most of the tips and tweaks listed on your guide I must tell you that it is definitely the best compendium on the X1.
Hats off to you!
Thank you very much for all your hard work.
excellent site.. great work..
I thank deeply from my side.
Definitely comprehensive and sufficient source of almost all needed WM/X1 info!
Any example on your WinMo Xperia Guide about Bottom menu of HelloWorldPanel example
Hi
I tried modifying the HelloWorldPanel example that comes with the SDK.
I still have trouble trying to show the custom bottom menus of the Xperia screen.
Could someone share the code snippets on how to get this to work ?
I like to have 2 menu on the left and on the right, and one menu has items to pick from the list when clicked.
Many thanks!n
Thx.. a very nice site with nice info ^.^
Thanks for all the responses! Great feedback.

[HELP NEEDED] Cool User Interface

Hi all,
I'd like to write some apps for mobile but I don't know how to have a "cool" (you know what i mean, iPhone like) interface instead of the flat one offered by .NETCF controls.
Please, help me or give me suggestions about where to find nice controls such as buttons (like the one used in phone dialers etc), scrollers, and so on.
Thanks,
Sergio
so are you asking for help with graphics and layouts? send me a pm. id love to work on some UI stuff.
heres several to choose from.
Free:
Manila Interface SDK:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566188
Silvermoon: http://silvermoon.codeplex.com/
Fluid: http://fluid.codeplex.com/
Commercial:
RescoeMobileforms toolkit: http://www.resco.net/developer/mobileformstoolkit/overview.aspx
Mirabyte Touchcontrols: http://www.mirabyte.com/en/products/windows-mobile/touch-controls-suite-for-netcf/information.html
Hi all and thanks a lot.
@Ren13B : I have just downloaded fluid, but i have serious problem on creating controls at runtime (no designer or my mistake) so if you have experience i'd like to see some rough/basic example code for vb.net
@S.V.I : I'm at office, when I return home I'll send you a P.M., thanks and see you soon!
I could help you with some graphics as well .
If you want, PM me.
I took a peak at the fluid demo application but never really tried using the controls in any of my projects. I think the developer has stopped working on it and is concentrating on silvermoon now. There's a forum section there so you may want to add a post there to see if anyone can help you.
Im waiting and hoping one of these days Microsoft will bless us with some finger friendly mobile controls. Perhaps the next .net compact framework will provide this but they arent releasing any information about it so who knows what it will provide.

[16 FEB][APP] ModMob 0.9.6 - Tutorials, Tools and Roms [Formally RomHelper]

I'm fairly new to programming but I thought I would have a go at an app that could help people flash roms, radios, change themes, find new apps etc. The app is simple (and I meen really simple) at the moment but I am hoping to extend its functionality soon. Basically what the app does is provide you with the tools, download links and instructions that you will need to flash a rom/radio/spl etc to your device.
I have also tried to include links to the best apps, mods & tweaks that your device has to offer, this part of the app is in early development at the moment but it is quickly growing.
I am programming this in c# and I'm a bit of a nuub at it so if there are any developers out there who like the look/idea of the app then please feel free to contact me, I will glady give the source code to anyone who wants it as I would like this app to be as helpful and usefull as it can.
Feedback is much appreciated and I would love some requests or ideas?

i cant believe over 100 views and no one has any ideas or feedback for me, i know its not the best program in the world but a few replys would be nice.
This would be ideal for looking into things instead of using the lame "search" feature (no offense) or keep looking through the pages .
But the tile is a lil bit misleading, as ROM Helper doesn't actually describes what does the app do . I mean it's just my opinion to change to something more informative, like ROM instructor for instance, title .
Also you won't draw attention in here, try posting it in a more specific section : ) .
Such a good app, keep up the good work because that what our community should do ! I wish i was a developer, even a noob one : ), cuz i have lots of apps' ideas but they're just in my head !
Keep it up

thanks for the words of encouragement, your feedback has been very helpful
I think you have a typo. You wrote KernAL insead of Kernel.
Its a great programm and i was looking for somethink like this a long time ago.
i know its a hell of work, but a start screen where you can search according to things like "6.5 or 6.5.3" and "cookie or "non-cookie", etc. I think its impossible because its just to much work as i guess you are connecting all the face manually.
Anyway, thanks a lot, i like it!
OT- Edit! I just noticed your Шапка-Ушанка - have u been to russia lately?

thanks and cheers about the typo, i will change it now, new version is being uploaded as i type this. and i wanted to add a search function but it wasnt working for me, im sure ill get round to it tho.
also i have been to russia but not recently, got my hat from outside the big museum in st petersburg, ive been learning to speak a bit of russian too for a hobby. dont know how you spell it in russian but i can say it ok "boy apinima paruski" lol
This is a great concept and could be a fantastic alternative to searching through the forums for what you need.
I'm sure you're still working on it, but at the moment some of the ROM headers link only to their download page (i.e. hotfile), and not to a description.
It looks like a lot of work, but it would be great if it becomes a comprehensive resource. Thanks for all of your effort!

[Q] Custom loading animation

Is is possible to replace the animated cog that appears when an app is being launched or a network communication is taking place?
I'm an iPhone user migrating from iOS to Android. I'm enjoying all the customization freedom that Android offers, but I'm having a hard time finding information on how to edit this icon. I'm attaching an image of the concerning graphic.
Thanks in advance
You need to root your device and edit framework.jar, although i can't tell you exactly how.
Why don't you try a custom rom like cyanogenmod? Much better than the stock software and a lot more feature rich.
I just didn't know if this was achievable at all, but thanks to your message I know it's possible so now I just need to figure out how to go about it.
I'm not familiar with cyanogenmod, I'll look into it, as well as into editing the framework.jar.
Thanks for your kind reply

Share your Custom Camera settings!

As tittle says, i decided create a topic where we can share ours custom cameras settings for various sittuations.
The manual settings, with or without effects, etc..
I dont find any videos(youtube) and posts(xda) about it, and i think is a good topic to be made.
Thanks guys!
