I am really new to this and needed some input.
I have been trying to buy a note 3 SM-N900W8 locked to rogers. I am using a wind sim card. So I contacted both rogers and samsung to get an answer to my question. My question was simple. If I unlock the note 3 at rogers so the warranty will not become void, will the phone work with my wind simcard? I got 2 answers.
The Rogers representative said yes and the Samsung representative said no and referred me to this page.
So I am not sure at this point which one to believe?

"SM-N900W8 AWS vs. Traditional Carrier Frequencies
AWS vs. Traditional Carrier Frequencies
If a customer buys a phone from Group A to use on the Group B network, even if unlocked, it won’t work as these are two different types of phones using different frequencies.
If your caller is having issues with a traditional cell phone on an AWS network, you will now be able to educate your caller as to why it's not working. There’s no fix or work-around. They’re just incompatible. Each phone is designed to work on a specific type of network.
Group A - Traditional Carriers - In Canada, the conventional carrier frequency bands for Rogers, Bell, TELUS, Virgin, President’s Choice or PC, Fido, Kudoo, Chtr and Public Mobile are 850MHz/900MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz.
Group B - AWS Carriers - The latest carrier entrants, Wind Mobile, Mobilicity and Videotron use AWS frequencies 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz."
yes, Notes 3 work across all cell phone providers, it's a true multi-band phone for North America
I'm using it on Wind, you just need to SIM unlock it, and it doesn't void your warranty by SIM unlocking

Did you buy the phone directly from wind or was it locked to another carrier and then you unlocked it?

it doesn't matter, they are the same model across Canada, it just to which provider it's locked to
you can unlock it online, plenty of sites that does that for you, or any mall kiosk that does unlocking

The one I am getting is brand new and customer service at samsung told me that since it is locked to rogers then you have to unlock it at rogers so not to void the warranty. Unlocking at rogers is $50 + tax. Is there any other way of unlocking without voiding the warranty?
Considering it is now mandatory that all carriers within Canada need to provide the option to unlock the phones after 90 days of service I don't see why it would void the manufacturer warranty.

And as per warranty. Let's just say you picked up the insurance program from best buy or futureshop. Their check list for exchanging for a phone doesn't include a check for phone unlock. So unlocking it or not makes no difference.
I do suggest to get an unlock code from the carrier to ensure that your phone is actually unlocked. And for any instances that rogers said your warranty is voided, you can show them that they are the ones that unlocked the phone and they need to cover the phone.
At the end of the day, Samsung has the say whether or not the phone is voided on their warranty. Not Rogers.

exactly, SIM unlocking does not violate any warranty.
Don't confuse it with Rooting, rooting which is the Administrator Hack, that voids the warranty.
SIM card unlocking is not the same as phone hack Rooting.

Can I buy a Rogers Note 3 and unlock/lock it to Wind and use it on the AWS frequencies?
I just did. I have a note 3 I got through Rogers, I unlocked my phone (from some unlocker site, didn't care about warranty) and went and signed up with wind. Everything works fine.
Rogers not 3
I have a Rogers Note 3 unlocked, I have a SIM from Wind that I would like to use, BUT when I put my sim in can see network signal but no data.
I did check the APN and it has the correct Wind APN, what am I missing?
I would prefer not flashing the phone with WInd's N900w8 firmware as it is a work provided phone.
Thank you
It would surely works
carrier
Can i get some help plz.... I have a sm n900w8 Canadian note 3 but am not sure which carrier it belongs to and the previous owners don't know. Is there a way to find out? I want to install back the stock rom.
n900w8
All Canadian Note 3, does not matter provider should work the same way and user the same ROMs, be rooted the same way and unlocked the same way
Actually its not true they are all the same, they all have the same model number but they don't all have the same modem. Case in point I flashed my wind phone with Bell's file through odin and my modem no longer works. And as I can't roll back ( I flashed lollipop ) I have to wait until wind ( if they ever do ) release a lollipop update with the updated modem firmware. I know it should be all the same but I'm telling you it simply IS NOT TRUE.
I've even tried restoring my old modem files through TWRP, as I had a full backup of everything and still no go, it shows that its connected to a tower but it doesn't register on any network. My IMEI is correct, and non listed.
If you have it unlocked then it will work on Wind.
So I am going to buy a probably used Galaxy S5, most likely from Swappa.com and I am going to activate it with Metro PCS, which is a GSM carrier, so I know I need a GSM carrier GS5, like from AT&T or T-Mobile. I did a bit of googling and I only ended up with more questions... Are the AT&T and T Mobile versions of the GS5 carrier locked? From what I read online, the ATT is locked and the Tmobile is unlocked, but I cant be certain from the couple forum posts I could only find. If the phone is already unlocked, I can just bring it into the Metro PCS store and activate it, right?
Now, what if it is locked? Can I carrier unlock it myself? How do I do that? Do I really need to buy an unlock code online? Seems kinda sketchy to buy these codes from random unlocking sites, but if I have to...? Also, can I have it unlocked by Metro PCS or T-Mobile or ATT?
Next part of my question is about the bootloader. Again, I did some research, but found only one relatively... relevant forum post. So I come here for direct help. I was chatting with AT&T tech support on their site asking about the bootloader.
Anyways, ATT told me the bootloader on their GS5's are encrypted locked. What about TMobiles version? Supposedly if they are encrypted, there is near to no chance of really getting that unlocked. Although, if they are not encrypted, would they be able to be unlocked? I have no idea about T-Mobile having a locked bootloader or not.
Lastly, has the bootlader been unlocked already for any GS5? I ask because ive seen some GS5's with custom ROM's and launchers and stuff, but last I heard, they were still locked.
You didn't do much "research" via Google or searching this forum or you'd already have the answers your are looking for. These questions have been asked and answered innumerable times.
Very few carriers other than ATT and Verizon lock bootloaders. TMB's bootloader is not locked. Generally speaking, TMB model has the most GSM bands and is arguably the most desirable model but you need to check whether those include the bands you need with the carrier you plan to use. Do that by checking and comparing the bands that both carriers use or simply find out what S5 model your carrier uses itself.
Most phones, incuding TMB, ATT, et al are SIM locked. But you can easily get a third party vendor to provide an unlock code for about $20 and thereafter use it on another carrier.

Sorry, this is just totally new to me. Ive never had an android device other than a Nexus 7 I was gifted that i hardly use. Ive never even had a smartphone, so Ive had to find and absorb all this info about rooting, bootloaders, unlocking. Its been kinda mind boggling. So in the meantime after I posted this I pieced together this info.. I hope I am corrrect:
-AT&T and Verizon have been locking their bootloaders for a while and everyone hates them for that
-Any GSM carrier phone can be unlocked to work with any other GSM carrier
-CDMA cannot be unlocked at all
Kinda iffy on this one, not 100% sure... -Rooting is the same as unlocking the bootloader. If the bootloader is not encrypted, the phone can be rooted and custom ROM's/recoveries can be installed.
-Supposedly Verizon and AT&T GS5's can now be rooted... (cant link to outisde links, but just search "How to Root ANY Samsung Galaxy S5 Variant (Even AT&T & Verizon) in 20 Seconds Flat" and its the first link.
Based off this new info I have gathered... I want a T-Mobile GS5 (or AT&T if they can in fact be rooted and have custom ROM's installed on them). I will have to carrier unlock it myself unless it is already unlocked (someone on Swappa.com says they are selling a "factory unlocked" T-Mobile GS5 for $480, so I guess T-Mobile also sells carrier unlocked versions). I will unlock it using a code from theunlockingcompany website for $40 (seems like a steep price, but supposedly its the best site to use). I will then unlock it with the code which should take a couple minutes after I get the code, code taking up to 5 hours to arrive in my email. I will then have to take it in store to Metro PCS (hopefully I can do it online too if I order the SIM card online to ship to me for $10) to have it activated with them and get service. Then it should be activated, have my phone number, have cell and data service, paid/pay $40 a month. All is well in the world.
Is that info I discovered above true, what about the steps I should go through in the last section, above?

I wouldn't know where to begin. Yes, a TMB phone is ideal IMO for ATT because it covers all of the ATT frequencies and then some, plus has an unlocked bootloader. Most of the rest you have wrong.
Any GSM carrier phone can be unlocked to work with any other GSM carrier
No. You can unlock phones, but models will seldom work well on a different carriers frequency allotment.
CDMA cannot be unlocked at all
Not true.
Rooting is the same as unlocking the bootloader.
They are not the same thing.
If the bootloader is not encrypted, the phone can be rooted
Not correct. You can root phones with locked (encrypted) bootloaders.
Supposedly Verizon and AT&T GS5's can now be rooted
Almost any Android with a pre-June6th firmware build can be rooted.
so I guess T-Mobile also sells carrier unlocked versions
Nope.
I don't know how you managed to adopt so much misinformation. I can only assume that you haven't done much reading yet and /or made a lot of assumptions. You should read some of the sticky posts to get a better general understanding of how everything fits together. Then you can pose more informed questions.
It has nothing to do with being new to smartphones. You just thought that it was easier to ask than to do a proper search or puzzle out a few confusing points. It would be in your own best interests to do some reading, but whether you do or not is entirely up to you.

Hi,
So I purchased my phone directly from Samsung here in the UK and therefore assume its an unlocked variant. I am using a vodafone SIM in there currently but I was wondering if this has now locked the phone to Vodafone or if it is still unlocked so that I can use it abroad with SIM's overseas?
Thanks.

Unlocked means unlocked. Phones sold and distributed by Samsung directly are almost always unlocked. The U.S. being an exception.
If you bought it from Samsung UK, it's unlocked. However, if you are not already aware, just ensure that before you use the phone overseas, or in any region other than the one you bought it from, you complete a five minute call.
I'll just quote Samsung's own sticker:
To use sim cards from other regions a cumulative call over five minutes must first be made with the SIM card from European operators.

(even though this article is written about the S5, it still applies)
Check before you leave by trying a SIM from another carrier. I got my S8 from Samsung (Canada) It was unlocked but locked to the first carrier SIM I put in. Then I had to use the unlock code included with my shipping notice to unlock.
I purchased an S6 through Expansys when they were in Canada. I got the UAE model and it was unlocked. I never used it on a network from there however the moment I turned it on it updated so maybe that's why.
I'm pretty sure the only difference between the unlocked us variant and US Cellular variant is USCELLs bloatware. On the uscell unlocking page all past LG G series models were sold unlocked ( edit: except for the g3). I'll try and insert my ATT prepaid sim in a bit. Has anyone tried a different sim in their USCELL g6? The model number alludes they are the same.
Edit: here is uscells woefully outdated unlock page. the last g series phone sold by uscell that was carrier locked was the g3. It hasn't been updated for the g6 yet
Edit 2: I can't post links yet, but search Us cellular unlock on your search engine of choice and go to the official carrier unlock page
According to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g6/help/cellular-version-to-verizon-t3576440 he got his USCELL to work on verizon.
My only question left is whether the financed lg g6 will work with different sims/carriers. I have an att sim at home I'll try in a few.
It's carrier unlocked (SIM card unlocked) if you pay in full, but does not qualify for bootloader unlock -- even though it's the same model number as the one that qualifies for bootloader unlock.
They must go by IMEI numbers or something.
Hi dear tech bros
I am from canada. I want to unlock my s8 (G-SM950W) . Its orginal carrier is WIND. I am looking for a best unlocking site to purchase unlock code.
Please refer me a good unlock site
Thnks
You need to be a little more patient bud. Making the same thread 3x won't get you anywhere faster
Wind uses CDMA technology and is not a GSM network.
Wind's band can be found here https://www.frequencycheck.com/carriers/wind-canada
So, I don't recommend unlocking your phone because you will probably not be able to use it with any other network. But this depends on each phone. I recommend you check with Wind first and also check if your phone accepts GSM SIM cards and GSM frequency bands.
