Maybe I'm misreading those reports? But it looks like the stuff that triggered it is lower down. All of what's displayed says "Not Found." Could you scroll down to the problematic bits and show them as well?

This comes as no surprise. Another reason why the end goal of any phone is to obtain root.

2x on this, it should be no surprise that CIQ is on any carrier's standard phone build - especially T-Mobile. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe parts of CIQ are packaged in the My T-Mobile app, for the purpose of "diagnostics." That app even asks for permission to collect diagnostic data and send it back to the mothership.

It is for diagnostics. I'm in T-Mobile tech and its the most helpful thing ever.

you wanna talk scary.... my first G4 came with a buggy SD card slot, sometimes detected, sometimes not.... Anyway, I called T-mobile support and the tech I spoke with on the phone KNEW when my SD Card was inserted and when it was not. WTF is THATTTTT??!?!?!

Who cares about CarrierIQ now, NSA got you all even without carrierIQ. So what's the matter about removing it.......

FWIW, I checked my Verizon G4 with 3 different CIQ apps (Lookout, Bit Defender, Trend Micro) and it came up clean. I remember a few years ago that they said they wouldn't use CIQ, but I'm sure they have the same capabilities, under a different name.

So what exactly does CIQ do/why is it important to be aware of it? I have a VS986 and would like to know just how much data is being collected about me and what I do/where I go.

I'd like to know, too. I'm on T-Mobile, but why should I care? Other than paranoia that people have, how does it affect me?

Omg carrierIQ!!

Can't you just turn off diagnostics (on the H811 at least) and CI is disabled?

Korean Galaxy S Missing Features and Laggy

I just got my Galaxy S about a week ago and I was very disappointed to see it didn't have Swype installed. I also noticed it was missing the SocialHub app which, doesn't really break my heart but was more of a "Huh..." moment. I do know the Korean version is slightly different since it includes the DMB Antenna for TV and whatnot but I was curious if anyone else knew about this and if there's a way I can get Swype on my phone. I'd also like to flash some new firmware on here because my Galaxy S is lagging quite a bit and at times is completely unresponsive in which I have to either attempt to power off or just remove the battery. I am using a task killer but I think it's more than just killing a few apps to solve my problems. It really doesn't seem to be nearly as snappy as I've seen in several videos. Hope someone can answer some of my concerns. Thanks!
Not sure if you tried this.
Try long press the text input field until the "input method" dialog box appears. Swype should be selectable from the box.
As for it being unresponsive, before trying to flash the new firmware, try to find a program call 'Advance task killer" and have it automatically kills useless tasks that continues to run in the background.
Other than that, if you are still unhappy, then flash away!

And if it does not appear for selection, go into setting, locale and see if Swype is there but unticked. If unticked, you should tick it before it can be eligible for selection.
Being laggy is a serious issue affecting all models, it seems. I'm too very disappointed with that, but I'm waiting for Froyo to come around to fix it.
I suggest you to flash JG3 or JG5 firmware. My SSGS seems faster than the original firmware after flashing. However, you should use Titanium backup to backup some Korean app that you like.
This European firmware has Swype kb, I can guarantee.

Hey tra, thanks for this.
Which one do you use? Do you have a direct link to it? What if you want to restore back to way it look (including the Telco customization) before handing in for servicing and warranty? Any idea how to back up your firmware first?

That's a fine way to brick the phone.
22.Can I flash an Asian ROM on my European device or vice versa?
Flashing should work without any problems. There are no known compatibility issues as of now. If any should arise, flashing back to Asian firmware is always possible.
Check your current ROM by dialing *#1234* to make sure you do not have a Korean variant of the phone (which is NOT compatible!).

@eaglesteve & @kcharng
I tried and checked both suggestions when I first got the phone because I really wanted to try Swype but didn't see the option. Only Samsung Keyboard existed. Now I have that and Swiftkey Beta since I installed it.
@kcharng
I do have Advance task killer installed and have been using it at times but for the most part it's pretty laggy. There's also the ever occuring GPS issue as well and I've had the camera mode sort of lock itself on my phone so I can't press the home button to exit. I'm hoping there's a Korean firmware that I can flash to fix it all or that Froyo will be my Godsend.
Thanks everyone for the helpful and kind replies btw. I was afraid I'd get flamed, call it first post jitters.

I also have the Korean Galaxy S. I had my Korean friend call up Samsung Service to deal with some of my issues. They didn't include Swype because of the double consonants in the Hangul, seems dumb that they didn't have an English only option. I've tried to use the apk from the I9000 but it just FC on me. The stock keyboard, really, really sucks on the Korean version, but right now I'm using Swiftkey which is really great for prediction but kind of frustrating otherwise. I've heard the Droid X has a great keyboard, so I'll try that soon.
I personally only manually kill apps with ATK, I don't let it background. At times I get laggy, but overall I find the device very responsive. FYI, if you didn't know they've put out two firmware updates already for the Korean version, connect to Kies if you haven't already.
Please reply or PM me if you have any questions. I wouldn't change the firmware, Korean version isn't easy to get international support for and also we will be the first to get Froyo, no reason to delay that! Also, I've noticed other features missing, like text-to-speech isn't as universal in our version.
Also you can try to root your phone.it is worth it just to run app like auto killer, cache cleaner, titanium backup.
Personally auto kilter is a much better app than ATK.

Is there any support here or elsewhere for the Korean Root? Then again, I think I'd wait at least 2-4 weeks until I get Froyo before rooting.

I think the biggest missing feature is tethering, but I guess that'll come with Froyo anyways and SKTelecom has advertised they'll move to unlimited data with free tethering in August to support this and other devices on plans 55,000 won and up.
*Edit* Tethering is not missing, I just didn't know the name of it, it's found in the same exact place as it is in the international version, wireless & network, mobile AP.

Swype
Not sure if you've already discovered this but..
I just upgraded my korean galaxy s firmware to DH09 with Samsung Kies and it included swype and a really good RAM clearer. Makes it a bit more snappy. Actually it may be too good because it can clear the widgets out to.
Not sure what else it has yet. Still playing with it. Actually someone just called me and an option to record the phone call was on the screen.... Can't say I'll ever use it but interesting.
If this is what Eclair 2.1 is like then Froyo 2.2 is going to be amazing
Cheers

Hi I'm new to this site and new to my phone as well. I also have the korean version of the Galaxy S and was able to upgrade to DH09. Im sorry but do you mean when you say good RAM clearer? I noticed that my phone has 326 RAM and the I9000 has 576MB RAm. Is there a big difference on that? Also, can you tell me where I can find the radio? I only found the radio app in the TV widget. But if I try scanning channels, it can't find any. Is it because I'm in the Philippines?
Does your phone also limits sms characters to 80 letters? Coz mine does, and the standard number of characters in the Philippines is 160. But I just downloaded handcent sms and I was able to send more characters
Thanks in advance!
I'll try to update this thread since we don't get enough answers! I kind of think we should try to get an "official Korean FAQ" going, as this thread is inappropriately labeled for general questions and issues going forward. Also, I edited one of my previous posts bc I'm a noob who couldn't find the tethering settings, I believe at the time of writting it was available, though it could've come in a fw update I think I just overlooked it.

Hopefully your radio is an easy fix, I had a similar problem with the DMB until I figured out how to work it. I did a little test just now to make sure the functionality is essentially the same, and in my experience, - it is.
On the top right corner of the device (if you are looking at the screen) you will notice a little cutout break in the device, this is the DMB antenna. In my apartment it is the only way I can find radio stations, even having headphones in (the way normal phones sans tv antennas work to get stations) wont work without having the antenna up and out. Obviously an eye-sore and a bit of a design flaw, imho assuming it can try an alternate if both are present, however, I don't have much of a use for the radio so I can look past it and I don't even fully understand the need for it with the TV but Korean's are just used to having these janky antennas protruding from their phones. My iRiver mp3 player didn't even need a DMB antenna to pick up stations, it worked fine with headphones, I'm not really sure why they necessitated the need for the antenna.
In my test, the only radio stations that came up were in the national scan, but this is probably location dependent, try to scan metro and national to see if you can find what you are looking for, if nothing comes up there is a technical problem with frequencies being scanned or something else.
Regarding the memory, this is how all the SGS variants report their available memory. No SGS, AFAIK, reports the full amount of memory and there has been plenty of debate on how much memory the units actually shipped and last I read Samsung never released an official presser on the quantity. These questions might have been answered over time, by Samsung or teardowns, or what have you, but this isn't unique to the SHW-m110s.
Regarding the SMS letters. We have an 80 byte limit on our phones, this means 80 english characters and spaces and each Korean syllable (composed of upto 4 characters, or letters if you will) will count as 2 bytes. I'll assume this has something to do with the carrier restrictions on SMS/MMS. Handcent might help us get around this, but might not, if it's truly a carrier issue. In your case, have you tried just sending something with 100 characters? For us it's a "soft-limit", meaning we can type 150 characters but it requires to be switched over to MMS, but you might not find the same with your carrier. Do a test if you like, especially if you prefer the stock app it's worth a test.Try to send a bigger text and check online to see how they charged you. In my case it automatically switches to MMS and they are treated the same for cost/phone plan purposes so it makes no difference to me (with the exception of having to switch 3G on when I have it disabled, ugh). With my previous dumbphone my long text messages would actually be sent as 2 text messages, another thing you should check to make sure isn't an issue to you (I think handcent would be able to get around this, again, I think this is a Korean carrier limit but it doesn't change our pricing...as a matter of fact, if handcent sent 2 50 character messages it would be more "expensive" if we go over our limit than if we sent 1 100 character MMS.
Hope that helps!

Yeah, I did discover that, also the latest firmware gives faster 3G data connections. If you are ever wondering what is going on with the FW upgrade go to naver and search "갤럭시s ____" fill the blank in with the updated FW build. Then translate the results from the page you've found.
Regarding Swype specifically, they gave us an old build, which is a bit disappointing. The latest/greatest has voice input, amongst other things. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

It seems that the Korean government is currently blocking this for competition reasons. This really pisses me off because, first, at least last year KT was growing faster than SK which means SK should be given every opportunity to make changes. Second, and more importantly, one of the president's platforms was decreasing the price of wireless services, this move would have to be followed by a similar move by KT if they want to be competitive so we'd all have cheaper options for massive data. I'm about 70% sure I'll write him a letter personally, I just think it'll be thrown in the trash because a 6 year old could probably articulate a better argument in Korean than me, of course I could have someone do the translating but I actually want them to be my words and it to be that much more authentic.
Hi,
Yes I do think we should have our own thread. It will be good in sharing things we find out about our phone. Our country doesn't support DMB yet that's the reason why I think the Radio or TV is not working. I found a link giving all the apk files and I tried copying it to my phone. But still it won't work. I guess I really won't be able to make it work. I found the list of all the apps from android forums.
I tried installing Handcent SMS and I was able to address the 80characters problem. Now I can send up to 160 characters per message.
I'm excited to see what Froyo can do for our phone.

Yeah, I'll write something up and post a new thread within a week. I'll try to get it translated to Korean because at least a few prominent hackers in Korea visit so if they can share their knowledge in either language at least we can start to ask questions a bit easier and in a setting we are more comfortable. Plus, if we get their devs in house a bit more then the rest of the GS community can learn more from them.
Anywho, I'm glad you replied because I have a question. What is the cellular radio frequencies and technologies you use in the Philippines. I want to know more about the world comparability of this phone, so any info you have on the radio tech in your area and what bands this can access would be great.

Stop calling pri primary rate interface its not right

OMFG>>>> FOR THE LAST FRICKEN TIME!
PRI DOES NOT STAND FOR PRIMARY RATE INTERFACE!
IT STANDS FOR PREFFERED ROAMING INDEX!
I hate typing in caps but people nowadays-- forget it
Any ways, PRIMARY RATE INTERFACE is from WAAAYYY back when dialup was the only thing around... There used to be some modems which chould use ISDN, and you could actually scale the modems (use them jointly). They each would work with ds0 to get a full 64kbps (as apposed to the 56k dialup). Which would mean together they ran at 128kbps... Back then it was a HUGE difference... Of course nowadays we have 1x everywhere (for cell phones) which exceeds that... Not to mention 2g 3g and 4g.
Anyways... STOP CALLING IT PRIMARY RATE INTERFACE!
this all started from some dude on PPCGEEKS reading up on PRI in wikipedia and finding that acrnym... BUT hes WRONG
Oh and for those who dont know what it does... ITS IN THE NAME...
Its an index pointing to several thousand radio locations in which to roam with... And by roam i dont mean using another networks' tower... I mean using an unregistered (same-service) tower. Within your SID/NID and Home address (HA) there are TONS of radio crap.If your SID is set to another state in which you are not in, there WILL be towers it cannot connect to. If it shows that your phone has the wrong SID, it will 'roam' within Sprints' towers which otherwise you wouldnt be able to use... With an outdated PRI we have a limitation on how we connect (its marginal but it does matter)
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...ed+roaming+index"&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=
You seem to be the only person who is saying this. Over and over again, I might add.
Your description of what the "Preferred Roaming Index" does is suspiciously similar to the commonly understood function of the PRL (Preferred Roaming List) as well.
I think the term you are looking for is "Product Release Instruction" and it has nothing to do with the function you are claiming it does.
You're rather misinformed for someone who likes to rant about the fact that this is a development forum as often as you do.

Would you mind providing a citation for your source of this "information"? I am having trouble finding any mention of a "preferred roaming index" in any of the documentation that I have access to.
Google does not even have a record of the term except for a few listings of your own forum posts.
This is a complicated one.
PRI, as Primary Rate Interface, still exists and it is used today. This is for TDM telephony ISDN lines, and it allows for multiple B Channels being controlled by 1 or more D channels. This is called CCS (Common Channel Signaling), utilizing an OOB (out-of-band) signaling.
To give an idea, i normally order 668 B channels for each 3+1 D Channels, completing a DS3 worth of voice traffic, when i design voice automation systems.
The "waaayyy back" explanation is actully of a BRI line, not a PRI, which allowed for only 2 B channels for each D channel.
I don't think this PRI has anything to do with our PRI at all, but i might be wrong here.
I thought it was the Pizza Redelivery Interface. For when you order a pizza then go to a different location. No need to call the pizza place. Just use the PRI.

Per HTC.
See email below:
Dear xxxx,
I understand how frustrating it is when there is an issue concerning the PRI for your Sprint Evo 4G. The PRI stands for Primary Rate Interface, which is used for carrying multiple digital frequencies for voice and data transmissions between a wireless network and the end user. The only thing that HTC is able to assist you with concerning the OTA update and the PRI is to verify that you have the correct software number on the device. The Sprint Evo 4G FroYo update should have installed software number 3.26.651.6 on your phone. You can verify this information by going from the Home screen to Menu > Settings > About phone > Software information.

Nexus NFC: ~The Forgotten~

So lovely developers, a note from the proud users: MAXIMIZE NFC USE.
I haven't found anything, correct me if I'm wrong, that currently uses the NFC capabilities of the S. I expected 2.3 to have something that would allow us to add CC info and use NFC at Pay-pass stations etc. So please developers, (Or even an app request?) find a way to use that NFC and we will love, Truly. That, and you users know it, will become a make/break for a ROM released.
Thank you for all of your hard work, and continuing work:
Flame.
Ps: If you ever need someone with some free time/Copy of Photoshop/ Beta-Testing, and some Common Sense I'm here!
As of right now, the NFC can only READ information. It has been confirmed though, that a later update will add the WRITE function to the NFC.
http://goo.gl/neyS6
It would have been nice for the retail packaging to include something like the places poster that Google gave to the press, just so we could test out the NFC.
That is on stock. Hopefully when source it out later today we can inspect and tweak. My hope was to enable fast data transfer similar to Bump, anyone know any maximum transfer rate speeds for NFC? Obviously wit read/write enabled.

You need to read more and post less. There are no APIs to write via NFC yet.
I like that you say "we" can inspect and tweak it, which its obvious you can't even search the forums, let alone RE or develop code.
I would keep an eye out on the Toshiba Regza phone from NTT DoCoMo in Japan. NFC is huge here. Every store has it and allows you to use it to pay for whatever. The new phone may have some APIs when it is released.

how do we use the NFC as a credit card?
normally we have to insert the credit card to the device to scan..
if by nexus S, how is it going to scan since the device only reads on chip from your credit card..

I have Chase, and both my Chase "check card" and MasterCard both have "Blink" which is their NFC enabled cards.
When Google finally enables read/write/send capabilities of the NFC, this is what I would guess would happen:
The Chase Android App, you log in and enable the NFC feature. So then you're at the grocery store, you lauch the Chase Android App, login, then "wave" your phone at the Credit Card terminal to pay.

BUSTED! Secret app on millions of phones logs key taps

An Android app developer has published what he says is conclusive proof that millions of smartphones are secretly monitoring the key presses, geographic locations, and received messages of its users.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/11/30/smartphone_spying_app/
You can download the app to see if you have CIQ from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110
Im running Miui and came out ok. Need root to run the app / clean it out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122569&highlight=ciq
That's pretty f**ked up. This logs keys as they are pressed, even in dialer. It doesn't appear to be installed on all android builds, seems to be carrier dependant.
I ran TrevE_Logging_TestApp_v7 to check for CIQ on my SGHT959 stock froyo.uvka6 rooted (Tmobile USA) and it came back clean, no CIQ found.
It would be good to post a list of which carriers/phone manufacturers are utilizing this rootkit so they can be avoided.
Anyway I think the only ones affected would be users of stock roms like me, CM7/MIUI and other custom roms should be fine.
Vibrant
just ran it on my Samsung Vibrant running Trigger 3.2 and it came up clean...

I found it on my T-Mobile SGS2.... :/ I killed it with Titanium backup and rebooted. So far so good. I backed it up just in case it does mess up the phone by removing it.

From my research the only way to tell if your phone has icq is to run log cat on your phone. Also just uninstalling the visible program didn't stop the program. I have found that asop and Muiu roms do not have ciq installed and only custom roms or kernels (in sgs2 case) which specifically removes listed as it removed.
I talked to a customer rep @ T-Mobile and she had no idea what I was talking about when I asked about ciq.
Can't wait for the class action law suit against ciq and see if this company can survive especially after eckhart's new video showing the program logging everything.

Does anyone know how i get sqlite3?
Hey man! this is ****ed up. How do we remove this?
It depends on which rom you are using. If you are using CM7/MIUI they don't have CIQ because they are based on open source android builds. CIQ is added by carriers and some phone manufacturers so if you are running stock rom or hacked rom based on a stock rom there is a good chance you have CIQ.
You need to download TrevE's Logging Test App to check for CIQ:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110
There's different versions, try them until you find one that works for your phone. This will tell you if CIQ is found. To remove it you need to pay 99 cents for pro version of app and your phone needs to be rooted.
**EDIT
Here's some more info on Carrier IQ from the author of Logging Test App. It details what Carrier IQ does and logs.
http://androidsecuritytest.com/features/logs-and-services/loggers/carrieriq/
IMHO CIQ would probably be useful software if
A) Subcribers voluntarily participated
B) The software can easily be removed
As it stands this is classified as a rootkit because it is carefully hidden with no way for an average person to remove or disable it.
**EDIT ++
On the plus side there seems to be a plethora of apps available in Android Market for checking if Carrier IQ exists on your phone.
https://market.android.com/search?q=carrier+iq&so=1&c=apps
I have a feeling there will be eventually a simplified method for removing CIQ. Just be patient.
vibrant doesn't have it...

What to do if CIQ is active...

OK, just tested my Legendary 2.1 set up with Voodoo CIQ detector from the market and it said CIQ was active with a score of 370. So I reflashed K0nane's CIQ remover and all was gold again. It then said there are CIQ components but appears to be inactive with a score of 170 as expected since there are neutered files andf folders required still in the system. Here is K0nane's thread if you don't have the file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340083
It is possible a theme or lockscreen may have restored CIQ components in your system so check after you flash stuff.
Keep checking - it will stay inactive for a while, but I see the score jump once in a while and I have no mods or themes installed on Legendary 2.1, so it's more likely that rebooting your phone was what did the trick (temporarily) rather than flashing noCIQ again during said reboot

Have you read the articles or seen the video of what it is recording? Keep that crap off my phone! The only thing they need to know is which towers I am hitting to improve service there. That they get without CIQ Bullsh&t!
I have installed legendary rom AND flashed konane's ei22-nociq-signed
voodoo carier iq also says 370 and active (a lot)
but a reboot and it says 170 and dormant
the thinking is that these are false positives.
Well I cleared Dalvik and cache, flashed the noCIQ file and keep checking and still inactive. Went to the Market and inactive still (thought that might have triggered it). But can't get it to show active again. So I have to agree that something is causing a false positive. Maybe this will be fixed in an update to Voodoo detector. In the meantime it doesn't hurt to reflash the file.
I'm running SleeperRom and mine says elements are found but are inactive with a score of 70. It's been consistent every time I run it.

typical knee jerk reaction. me thinks you should review the video by treve. while it did notate a text had been recieved, he makes it seem as though it keylogged him tyoing the text or the body of the recieved text. ciq did not. it notated that a text had been recieved. the logging program he was using on his computer picked up the acual text of the message. no carrieriq. check the code on the screen all around where his text pops up.
ive linked you to the exact instance in the video.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=T17XQI_AYNo#t=12m25s
this is what ciq accually gathers.
Browser page render event: Internal page ID, no data related to page contents or URL Page renders
Location event: GPS and non-GPS location data Location changes, telephony-related events
HTTP event: Request type, content length, local port, status code, URL, no page contents HTTP request sent or response received
Network event: Internal identifier Network state changes
Telephony/radio events: Misc. radio and telephony data Call dropped, service issues, radio event, etc.
Hardware event: Battery level, voltage, temperature, etc. Hardware state change
Keystroke event: Key pressed in phone dialer only
Miscellaneous GUI events: Network type, battery state GUI state changes
Call event: CallerID, state, phone number Call initiated, received, or failed
Application event: Application name New app, app stopped, app gained/lost focus
SMS event: Message length, phone number, status, no message body SMS received or sent
i personally am fine with all of this. no page data, no personal data, no problem. i think they just need an opt out system.

I don't think it's false, because there are still 3 CIQ files remaining on the phone. These files are so engrained into the system that when I deleted them, the phone would not boot past the Samsung screen. So these 3 files are still being used somehow, and they are accessed early in the bootup process. If I have a free moment to purposely cause a bootloop, I'll capture a logcat that shows the errors generated when the system is unable to load the CIQ files...

When you boot up look at /Dev/ttyCIQ0 if it's present, your scores are likely because that pops up at boot and disappears. It's within the kernel.

I do and dont. I agree that it isn't being used for anything malicious, and sprint only has the parts enabled that they need. However, it is a battery draining service, and the parts sprint doesn't need can be turned on by them. So its a do i trust them type thing. I don't.

If you have the noCIQ mod installed or are running a ROM with it removed, it is gone. Period. The Voodoo Carrier IQ Detector app is not yet compatible with the noCIQ series of mods.
Only libiq_client.so must remain in the boot process - and in fact, it does absolutely nothing. It only matters because it's statically linked. libiq_client.so is 100% controlled by the framework-side pieces of code - which are removed with noCIQ.

My thoughts exactly. Not only that, but if Verizon has the "most reliable" or "best" network, and they don't use CIQ, then why do the other networks need it?
Or I could be wrong, and maybe Verizon has their own spyware instead of subing it out to CIQ.

Have you read the articles for WHAT they are collecting? Probably not close enough, because no one knows exactly what data they are collecting, just the abilities they have to collect. I seem to think, this has been highly sensationalized. Just because it had the ability to do certain things, doesn't mean that's how it is being implemented by Sprint.
Everyone is so eager to label things as data miners, and spyware they forget that they cannot actually see the metrics.

The ONLY Metrics Sprint needs is what tower I am hitting and when as well as how much data is used through it. That they already get from tower data. They have no business checking out what URLs I visit or any of the other crap that can be collected. I already get enough spam from data miners latched onto sites I visit at home. Don't need it on my phone too.
