Hi,
I recently came across a problem when listening to music on the DHD on stock rom and the newest OTA. When not listening to music I easily get two days on a single charge. When listening the battery is out of juice in around 11 hours, thats way too fast for me... I found out that a process called "mediaserver" is using around 50% of my battery when listening to music for more than 6 hours. HTC Music only takes around 2%. Is that normal, can the mediaserver be stopped? Already killed all of the media applications and cleared their data, also formated the SD card and put all my music back on. There are 1400 songs on that card, all in mp3 or m4a format, nothing else... 11h is a joke compared to the iPod Touch I had before...
Best regards
Oliver
I would just like to say that an ipod touch does not have cellular processes and hardware to drain the battery further.
Just saying that the comparison made may not be the best.
Sent from my Desire HD
Yes, I know that is a bad comparison, but I dont know why the music is draining my battery. The mediaserver seems to be the cause of the problem, but I dont know what it is and what it does. I also dont know how to solve the issue...
Best regards
Oliver
Try using a different music player. The one that is in the rom supports DLNA so it is possible that it tries to share your music with other devices. I have used it to stream music from my pc to my phone, but probably medaserver is the process that streams music from the phone.

Could it possible be that mediaserver keeps running even when it's not supposed to? I would understand if the mediaserver was running when connected to WiFi and listening to music.
But what do I know? I'm keep using spotify instead of using the built-in player ^^

Thanks for the replies.
Converted all tracks to mp3 today, so there are no m4a in my playlists anymore. Also renamed some songs with lots of characters, just to make sure everything is fine. Will see if it makes a difference. Are there any recommendations for alternative music players on the DHD?
Regards
Oliver
There is player pro and stock player, rest seem to drain too much battery.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
try Music Mod. i've been using it because the stock music player widget doesn't have a 'previous track' button, and so far it seems to be a better player.
Hi,
tried a different music player yesterday. Sadly, the mediaserver process still needs around 50% of my battery... I really dont know what is causing that problem. Could anyone with a lot of music on the DHD test how much battery the mediaserver needs after playing music for a few hours without pause? Maybe it is normal...
Also, I've read that mediaserver is indexing the sd-card. Maybe there is a corrupt file which causes the problem. How can I narrow it down on specific folders. Can I exclude some folders from indexing?
Best regards
Oliver
Have you tried to listen to your music while phone is in airplane mode?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Not yet, will try that. Thanks for the hint.
What if the battery lasts longer then, where lies the problem?
Regards
Sadly, activating the flight mode doesnt help. Still drains the battery as much as before...
Any other hints, there must be a solution... A friend of mine tested playback on his DHD, the mediaserver only needs around 10% after a few hours of playback.
I used mine a lots today playing music....a hour and half playing over bluetooth to the car stereo and the way to work then i would say about 12 till 1.30 before dinner and then 3 till about 5.30 play thou exturnal speckers at work...
with a fully charged battery at 04.30 when i left to work till 18.00 when i got to the bed and breakfast and i was down to 68 present battery.
Hi,
thats impressive! Not possible with my DHD. May I ask you how much music you have on your sd-card, any which file types? I feel that there is a corrupted file somewhere in my card, but I dont know how to find it...
Using the hidden battery info tool (*#*#4636#*#*) I found out that the DHD was awake about 80% of the time. That means it doesn't get into sleep mode anymore when listening to music. Also, the back of the phone is getting hotter the longer I listen. Maybe that is the problem...
Mediaserver is a process that is playing back media on android. This includes sound and hardware accelerated video playback. It doesn't actually have anything to do with the internet, its name implies that it "serves media" to Android, to the user, to you.
Kill the mediaserver and you also kill the sound.
Also, it's normal for a phone to not go to sleep when it's playing audio. Something has to feed the mp3 data to the decoder right? In general, phones are not the best for listening to audio since they have to be awake to play it and keeping them awake wastes battery. Keep in mind that an iPod is a music player and has been designed as such so it probably supports a hardware mode to play music where the main processor is not required and can sleep (and not waste battery).
got about 10 albums all mp3, which rom are you using , some manage better then others.
Power management / battery better i mean..
I have a stock T-Mobile Tab. I have a 16gb memory card installed in it, with quite a bit of music on the card. Whenever I play an mp3, it works fine....for the first song. It seems that about halfway through the second or third song, my tab always freezes. It doesn't seem to matter if the music file is on the sd card or my 16gb's of internal storage, it still freezes. I even placed an mp3 that plays through fine the first time on repeat to make sure it wasn't just bad files. The mp3 that worked on first play freezes upon being repeated.
Is this just me with this problem? Any ideas what it could be?
My tab doesn't freeze, but it does stutter/skip after a few songs have been played. I think there are two possible solutions. First, try a different music player from the market. I think skipping/stuttering is a known issue of the stock player. Also, maybe the quality of the SD card could be the problem. I bought the cheapest card. So use someone elses card to test that out.
Let us know how it works out.
My uk tab o2 has this issue to every time I start a track in music app built in the phone it shuts down. Also happens with stock email client.then opens on second try.
This is my second tab with o2 and the last had same issues.....

Check the notification area if the media scanning is running, it is the sd card icon. If you have thousands of mp3 as in my case, scanning uses up the cpu slowing down the tab considerably.
If you want to cancel the scanning, you need to root your device. You can download z4root to safely do it. Then download Rescan Media Root. This program enables you to disable scan.
Note though you need to really run the media scanning for newly added media files so those can be accessed by the stock media player. You do this at night before sleeping. Mine takes about five hours to complete.

Hey guys, just thought I'd throw this one out there to see if anyone has had any better luck than I have with music on the Droid X
I am currently playing my music off of my SD card in winzip but I only get just about 8-9 hours out of the battery I was wondering a few things:
1) is winzip the best way to play music?
2) is there a way to put your music into internal memory so it doesnt have to access the SD card all the time?
3) is there any other way to make my battery life better?
I don't know if this is really what you were looking for exactly, but I thought I'd share how I do it just in case. I've recently been playing around with an app called AudioGalaxy, which allows you to stream your music from iTunes straight to your phone. It works really well. I can't imagine it is exactly kind on battery life, but I haven't seen any major problems, although I don't stream 24/7. It takes just seconds to load songs, and seems to work really well. Its a great solution for when you have more than 16 GBs of music, and don't want to spring for a 32 GB card, and it allows you to have so much more room on your card.
Only problem is that you have to have your computer up and running for streaming to work (obviously).
Use poweramp for music and 8-9 hours is actually average for battery
Connected music player is the best
music player I've ever used...

poweramp 6hrs straight with gtalk and exchange push brings me to 40-50% on the vzw extended.
so it sounds about right to be low on stock battery.
please keep in mind our phones so a ton more in the background than a standard pmp.
Another vote for Poweramp. Buy it and don't look back, it's the only music player for Android in existence with a good equalizer. (and alphabetized song/folder views, for those of us that keep all our MP3s in one folder; plus decent ear bud button support)
Hello,
My music player ( pre-installed in Milestone 2 UK retail ) go freeze sometimes, especially after a song finished.
This happened randomly and not so frequently, sometime music player works perfect even I played all songs ( 80+ songs ). So I don't know whether a solution really works immediately.
After the music player freezed, I cannot operate any thing in the player interface, just force close the player in process manager, restart the player, then I can't play songs anymore ( freeze again ) .
And, I can't start any SD-related apps like video players and some games ( like Asphalt 6 ). But I can copy/cut files in the file manager.
Remount SD card or reboot the phone, everything backs to normal.
Is this the microSD's problem?
I tried different ways to format it but never solve the problem, and, Watching movies/Playing games goes well. I also try to replace the music playing libs with Droid X's (http://yuanjie.name/entry/milestone-2-mp3-crackling-playback-issue-solved), but music player freeze again last night.
I have no idea what happened.
Thanks in advance.
Try an alternative music player such as WinAmp or PowerAmp.
Check if your problem persists.

Thank you very much!
I'm try PowerAMP now, I really enjoy this powerful app.
I'll give a feedback if it doesn't freeze after several days.
This looks like SD Card issue. New player won't help IMO. Try testing on another dard.
I really think it's a kernel problem, or at least a problem with the media scanner. Sadly, I think we'll have to wait for GB update =/

I read the thread, it has some similarities with the problems that waigx and I are facing. Can you open any other application after PowerAMP shuts down? Does it really shuts down or crash (stays in memory but doesn't execute anything)? Can you open a file manager when this happens?
I'm using Cubed as my player - though all other players I tried (default from Motorola, Meridian, PowerAMP, WinAmp) behaved exactly the same.
Sometimes the player keeps on thinking it is still playing (i.e. track progress is moving without sound), but usually it just ends up with ANR. All other applications [that I need] seem to work fine after this. I do seem to remember Goggles and Camera not responding after a crash, but they crash on their own anyways, so can't really put blame on music player crashing.
A couple of times I did have a case where I couldn't open up SD card anymore, but I've gotten so used to this (8 hours of work+music with 2-3 crashes [or more?] every day) that I stopped trying - just reboot and continue where I left off.
The crashes happen around the same time (but not exact) - around lunch, then at around 3-4pm. Sometimes it also crashes when I'm on my way home ~6-7pm. I think it is somewhat related to power management - I notice it crashes more often as the battery is going down (although I do charge pretty much every night) and there's that "standby called" log message. I did try various battery settings with no luck - any suggestions what I could try more?
There were also a couple of times where I would just leave it at rest after a crash, then start Angry Birds (seemed to reset media/sound system or something), or just wait 15-30 minutes and the sound would come back and the player would unfreeze after a force close and everything would work fine. Until the next crash, that is.
I'll try the remount SD trick and I'll double check the file manager the next time it does this - presumably just after lunch on Monday
I freezed the media scanner with Titanium Backup and scanned music media with PowerAMP, but I had the same problem afterwards... Looks like a deeper problem or a problem with the sd card

This thing has worked on my gf's milestone 2 ... but I am not sure if it will work for you ...
1.) Backup ur device/settings/messages etc
2.) Factory reset the device
3.) Sign in your motoblur a/c after factory reset
Immediately after that
4.) Open connected Music Player .. press menu button and find the options for tunewiki lyrics/covert art downloader ... uncheck all of those
5) Settings->DataManager-> somewhere u will find similar options as above .. disable all of those
Basic Idea is to completely diasble all sort of data that the connected Music Player will ever need ....
Sorry, I could not give you the exact Menu operations because I dont have the device with right now... But it works if u r ready to do the factory reset...
You will actually like the Connected Music Player after this because it has a nice shoutcast integration and neither does it crash so often like Winamp...
Also as far as I know the bug with the Connected Music Player is such that Music in all sort of other players including Winamp also stops working ..
Tell me if it works

My Goggles and Camera also always crashed long time ago, but your problems is really stranger than mine.
I think you should WIPE your phone ( don't forget backup data before it ).
Before I flashed the Argen2Stone ROM, I suffered from the same problem. The CMP froze spontaneously.
Now - after using A2S - I never recognized such a behavior again.

Hey anupash,
I really appreciate for your detailed answer, I was bought PowerAMP. Even thought it cost $4.99, but I think it worth that.
I delete up CMP in the file system, my phone runs well in these days. Players like Winamp, realone are using system decode libs, so they also meet some problems I guess.
Connected Music Player have a great integration with the whole system, but I need data sync and album-arts.
Thank you again, If I meet additional problems I'll post in this thread later.
Best regards.

File manager seemed to work - at least for browsing the folders.
Unmounting SD killed the player. Remounting it back and trying to play anything made the phone reboot on it's own. Go figure.

Thanks for the tip Sadly, I don't have time for this now - as I mentioned - I pretty much got used to it constantly crashing... But I'll probably do that if the upcoming (hopefully soon...) MotoEurope update doesn't help.
Im having this problem also. Random freezes at playback... using winamp thereĀ“s no problem...
All we have always heard about the "media server" draining battery bug on S3/Note 2...
Well, i never suffered of this bug... but today my phone wake up with media being on top of the battery panel and being always active...
My rom is XDME6
what shall I do? Any other with that issue?
u probably need to use better battery stats to check first.
1) It could be due to Corrupted SD card , either the songs or pictures.
- My personal experience for this. My SD card when i check number of files, it shows 900, however, when i check i only have 700 mp3.
200 extra hidden files are creating problem. I formatted the card and recopy the mp3, issue resolve
Or it could a new App you have installed, it doesnt shut down properly leading to wakelock
- I too have this issue, after i installed one game, i realise this issue. (probably coz i play the game with max volume )
anyway in the end, i greenify the game, issue resolved.
I too experianced this recently. But after searching a bit I understood that the problem was in my 32gb external SD. So I copied everything in my sd to my PC and formatted it. Then put the only the important files back. It takes sometime but it's worthy. And now I'm having superb battery life

I experienced this when I had it plugged from my phone micro-USB to built-in USB port in the car.
It turns out the car was constantly looking through my phone to browse for music and show on the dash. Once I stopped plugging it into the car, I no longer saw it.

The problem is REALLY SERIOUS.
MicroSD unmounted. 4 cores at 100% .... process android.media 84% cpu usage...
OK PROBLEM FIXED
:victory::victory::victory::victory::victory:
It was my fault!
On formatting and restoring my old settings (upgrading the rom) I copied the EA Real Racing 3 data folder on the wrong directory
So the media scanner was going crazy for this..... :silly:
