I'm trying to convert my SM-900F to the Google play vanilla android version, I've seen some old tutorials for loading an old Kit-Kat ROM onto the device, but I'm currently on Lollipop, so...
1. Would loading a 4.4 version ROM even work?
2. Would I then be able to OTA update to Lollipop?
3. Is there any other way to get a "clean" Google ROM?
(Yes, I know I can just install CM, but I do prefer stock google to CM)

0. Try to post in the correct section next time, there is a Q&A subforum for the s5
1. Yes there is, get a stock rom from sammobile and flash it via odin. Make sure to wipe data first.
2. Yup, provided you don't make any modifications such as root or flash a custom recovery/rom/kernel.
3. Please specify what you mean by clean google rom.. do you mean a rom with only google apps?

Thanks Akalsemann,
I'm new here so I wasn't sure where this thread should go
As for a "clean Google ROM", I meant a "Google play edition" ROM, i.e. no touchwiz or Samsung bloat. Googling around a bit more, it seems these never really existed for the S5, only the S4
(I'd link to an arstechnica article titled "Don’t cry for the Google Play edition program; it was already dead" but can't since I'm a new user)
I guess I'll install CM and be done with it, as the phone is painfully sluggish out of the box, often taking SECONDS to display the app-switcher screen.

If you don't like the ROM, don't use it.
Don't bash the ROM because of your inability in understanding how to use the ROM.
Don't expect much help from others if you're going to be bashing a ROM. It's rude to both users and developers.
Why don't you just NANDROID your current ROM, flash the full GAPPS.zip, and restart the phone?
That way, you can find the answer out for yourself AND could have saved the space on the forum and time you needlessly used to ask the question.
In short, just flash GAPPS. You should be fine.
Guys i heard official CM 12 for Galax s4 i9505 released, i wanna install it, the problem is im a completely noob for install custom OS, never done it, im afraid i might brick the phone, can you guy guide me to do this please, current stock version 4.4.2 is very laggy :S
Thanks
Firstly, you have to be rooted.
I used this guide to root my s4. Installation instructions on second post.
Warning: Make sure you have the right model. Do not use CF-Auto-Root if you have an AT&T or VZW branded s4.
After rooting you will need a custom recovery.
There are several custom recoveries. The most popular being ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
You can use ROM manager from the play store to install a custom recovery.
Or go here and use that guide.
After rooting and installing a custom recovery you can flash a custom rom. What you need to do when flashing a custom rom depends on the rom itself. See the rom installation instructions for that.
It's not hard if you follow the guides carefully. Or you can as a friend (who is more experienced at this) to help you

You could flash the Google Play Edition ROM found here. I use it myself and it's very stable and haven't encountered any problems so far.
Edit: Only downside is that you can't move apps to sd card. It's not supported yet.

that sucks :. im a heavy app user ,anyways did your phone lagg on stock android? mine is very laggy.. its on 4.4.2
Not able to move apps to sd card is only a problem when you have the 16GB version. But I heard there is some workaround for this.
In my opinion stock rom was pretty fluid. Didn't have any stuttering. Only lag I ever experience was when changing music tracks and the home button lag. But I have the international (unbranded) version of the S4. Which means no carrier bloatware to suck up the power and performance of the phone.
The gpe rom does seem faster and smoother compared to stock firmware.

Hi newman2015:
First of all, that can void you warranty since you will root and install a custom recovery on the S5 (Of course it depends on your region).
If you want a more stable and mature ROM, then go for Kitkat, some ROMS out there have great MODs like the Dragon KK CM11 rom.
On the other hand if you want to try something new and new capabilities then go for Lollipop, there are great variants out there and they are getting more stable each day, but expect issues.
I have tried several of them but the best for LP are Bliss, Dragon, CM12 from albino887 (UNNOFICIAL)... For KK i recomend Dragon ROM, Liquid Smooth and Vanir, all of them with great customization, but that's my personal suggestion.
I hope this helped.
Best! :highfive:

Hi newman2015:
Since you have the International variant of S5, you can flash any of those ROMs that I mentioned earlier, if you need further assistance don't hesitate to ask.

Hi newman2015:
Of course. IF YOU WANT FIND A GUIDE WITH IMAGES, just google it. But the basic steps are as follow.
- Always do a backup!!, since you can lost everything (CONTACTS, FILES, PHOTOS, ETC.)
- Download a stock image in case that anything goes wrong, that way you can boot you S5 once again
- Download ODIN, that way you can boot you S5 once again and just in case
- Download your desired ROM to your PC
- Download GAPPS to your PC (remember to download KK GAPPS)
- First of all follow the guide to root and install a custom recovery (Chainfire CF-Root, don't do anything extra FOLLOW THE GUIDE and you will be safe)
- Once you have root and a custom recovery and you booted into ANDROID OS, transfer the ROM and GAPPS to your phone
- Remember to do a backup!!
- Find your APN settings in your current ROM and take note of then, back up them, etc.
- Turn off your phone and press HOME, POWER and VOLUME UP button to boot into RECOVERY
- Find the option WIPE
- Swipe to do a Factory Reset (you will start clean... )
- Once it finish, select the option BACK (DON'T SELECT FORMAT DATA OR ADVANCED WIPE)
- Select the OPTION INSTALL
- Navigate to the directory where you saved the ROM and GAPPS
- First select THE ROM FILE
- Select the OPTION ADD MORE ZIPs
- Select GAPPS file
- Swipe to begin...
- Wait a little... a little more...
- If you don't receive errors select the OPTION FLASH DALVIK and CACHE (Just to be safer)
- Select the option REBOOT
- Enjoy your new ROM
- Restore your APN settings, contacts, etc.
Hope it helps
Best!
P.D. To be honest I can't remember if the hebrew option is there, but my guess is that it is

Hi People
Unfortunately not had any replies to my 1st post about what bloatware and preinstalled apps that I am able to remove from the device after rooting it.
Could I try from another Angle could anyone provide a link for a custom rom that I could try and install which would remove it by installing a custom rom?
Sorry guys but I'm desperate to get the crap off and free up the device storage!
Thanks
Paul

If you goal is to free up space just removing preinstalled apps won't help that much since you are only modifying the system partition which is fixed and readonly. As for custom ROMs, since you are a T285 user you have the benefit of a wide range of ROMs to choose from, for 5.1.1 you have the tinker edition roms, on the other hand the 6.0.1 (CM, Omnirom) and 7.1.1 (Lineage, Omnirom) based roms allow adoptable storage, of course the 6.0.1 and 7.1.1 roms have problems just take note of the issues and problems each build has and see if it works for you. Just take a look at the ROMs and custom kernel section of this forum.
Thanks Jedid, would these roms remove bloatware upon installation? Which would you say is the most stable? Are they installed using Odin?

when you "install" these ROMs they actually replace the entire system and boot partition of your device, so they don't remove anything they replace it. In theory the Tinker Edition variant is the most "stable" as it is just stock with some apps removed. For non-stock based firmware (CM, LineageOS, Omnirom) I guess CM-13 has the most hardware support. Yes you use Odin to install these.
You wouldn't have clear step by step instructions to follow would you please? New to this it is rooted twrp and supersu.
Also could you provide the Rom on the tablet as it is now incase ever what to return it to normal.
Hi Guys I managed to install the Tinker Edition 5.1.1, it's still got kids mode Hancom, Samsung smart manager still on there? I don't seem to be able to move to SD card I thought you could on this rom? If not could anyone assist please?

Only 6.0.1 and 7.1.1 based roms like CM, Lineage and OmniRom support adoptable storage. For Tinker Edition use root apps like Link2SD to move to SD card.
With links2sd can you move any apps on the device to SD card? Are there any that do need to be left on the device?
After turning on the device today I don't seem to be connect to my wifi. Saying failed to obtain IP address also won't connect using tether from my phone either. All other devices in the household are connected fine, and there were no issues prior to installing Tinker edition rom last night. Can anyone help please? How to rectify? I've switched off router rebooted I've switched off device and still won't connect?
Sorted problem, the IP address needed changing!
If I have now installed custom rom after rooting my SM -T285 how do I put it back to how it was from new with no root or custom rom, none of the apps like sky sports mobile virgin media anywhere will work on a rooted device!

you can download the stock rom from sammobile, updato and then flash using odin
Would that over ride any custom rom then? Or would have to unroot after installing stock rom

yes it would totally overwrite your custom rom.
Hi there everyone!
I've downloaded a lot of .apk files claiming to install the Google dialer on a non-rooted S4 but so far all have failed to install. Is it possible to get this dialer on a non-rooted S4 and if so, which one should I be downloading?
Thanks for your time!
The dialer only works on Pixel, Nexus, Android One, and Google Play Edition devices running Android 6 or higher. You're running Android 5.0.1, thus the dialer will always refuse to install.
Root, then install an AOSP ROM and GApps package to use the dialer.

Thank you very much for your help!
I was told on another forum that I could not root or replace the ROM on this phone, as Verizon prevented it with the last OTA update. Is this not true?
@schwim: The fact you have a Verizon device and have taken an OTA means you can't change ROMs to a newer version. Such information would have been more helpful if placed in your initial post, but no matter. The upshot here is that there is nothing you can do that will allow you to install the Google dialer.
