Game of camera thrones: S6 vs G4! - Galaxy S6 General

Hello everyone,
I've made a video in which I test the camera of the S6 against the camera of the G4. In the video I am comparing a lot of camera topics, such as low light, OIS, audio quality (video) shutter speed etc. Hope you enjoy!

Great video.
Not that it makes a huge difference to the review, but I think you can turn off the feature on the G4 where it immediately takes a pic on launching the camera with a double press of the volume down button. I don't have the G4, but I've heard others say this.

[Q] Camera performance after Jishnu/xdabebb mod?

Hi all, I 've been thinking of buying a new phone & I really like the g2 very much but the only thing that is stopping me is the camera performance.
Can someone please tell me after the Jishu/xdadebb mod how is the camera performance under low light, how is the autofocus in low light also is the continuous autofocus in the video problem resolved. How much is the shutter lag after the mod.
I really want to buy this device for the camera & its under my budget if the camera ain't good enough even after the mods I may go with oppo find 7a/oneplus one which are in the same budget but have better camera.
I dont capture my photos in low light. But the camera is pretty amazing with xdadebb mod, and Mi2Raw enables the G2 to capture raw footage as well.
The G2 and G3 has the same camera sensor, just that the G3 has a Z-Axis image stabiliser and laser autofocus. So if I were you, I'll go look at those camera comparisons on review sites comparing the G3, OnePlus One and the Oppo.
Edit: Video performance is pretty good too. xdadebb camera mod allows for tap to focus in video to focus your subject and it works well. It has object tracking too!
Edit 2: With dorimanx's kernel, I was able to turn down the mic gain when I was at a concert. That + the stereo recording = pretty awesome recording
Thanks @lowjinyik.
Anyone else using these mods please comment about the low light performace after the mod.
I haven't tried taking pictures in low-light conditions yet, I should, will do and compare later but under bright, sunshine outdoor, with Normal mode, I see virtually no difference in term of performance and image quality. There are several features that I haven't tried out yet.

The low light camera quality is good. The mod makes very little difference to low light pictures.
Thanks guys for your responses. I think I might go with oppo find7. It's better than the g2 in every aspect except battery life & OS updates. Which can be taken care by the VOOC charger & custom roms respectively.

Yeah, but I consider almost every flagship phone released, so that doesn't mean I will buy it. I currently have an S6, but if the G4 camera and screen turn out to be better, and the software doesn't make me cry, then I would consider switching from the S6.

Gotcha, noticed some of your posts about the S6. It will be interesting to see if you will jump ship to the G4. Some members choose to believe the official releases will be better than the previous pre production units. Time will tell. From this video I see very similar results or besting the S6 with the camera, not so much on the videos however.
Thanks to these reviewers on YouTube we are able to see the difference as of today between the two flagships.

Some (in fact I think all) of the pics have that kind of water colour painting look when you zoom in to 100% and that's usually the result of over aggressive noise reduction (isn't it?) so that's why I'm keen to see some RAW files (particularly of low light shots)
I'm curious about the G4 as well, as I do plan on upgrading over the summer, especially since the camera is pretty much my highest priority. Thus far, it's between this and the S6. Of course, even if the pics are great, I need to see the phone in person anyway. I am worried about the size though since I don't have large hands... XD
I see the pics just fine, though I do have a Flickr account, so not sure if that's a factor to those who can't see the pics. Maybe the OP changed the settings, no idea. I like the pics you have so far, but I definitely wanna see some low lights shots and some indoor pics as well.

LG G4 Camera <3
Why i Love the LG G4's Camera:
In my Opinion, the G4 has the best multitalent camera in all smartphone's cameras.
Speed is almost as good as iPhone 6+ and S6
Superior Dynamic Range
All Photo/Video Recording Modes (4k,1440p,1080/60p,720/120p) and 16 Megapixels
HDR-Video is also on-board.
Laser-AF just needs 0.1s to Focus! Wow...
Good Low-Light Performance
Ranklist of best phone Cameras in my opinion:
LG G4
SGS6 (Has best speed, but only almost LG G4 Quality)
SGN4/EDGE
Nokia Lumia 1030 (Speed got much better than 1020. But is still not the best.)
Lumix FZ1000 Beats all phones
6 Questions about the LG G4 Camera, please answer, if you can
Question 1:
Does the LG G4 Record Slow-Motion Video, like i described here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/slow-motion-phones-device-how-to-imo-t2998500
Question 2:
The LG G4 is still not in the German Tech Shops.
How many Burst Shots can you shoot in row?
Question 3:
Is burstshot also possible with HDR?
Question 4:
Can you boost the OIS with Digital Image Stabilisation to maximize the stabilisation=?
Question 5:
Which Bitrate is used to record 4K-Video on the G4?
Question 6:
Has the G4 got a PHYSICAL shutter button?

what a coincidence I have iPhone 6 too with same UAG case just blue . Awesome looks and sturdy case. I am considering switching back to android with following priority:
camera must be on the par or better to s6 or iPhone 6
screen not as badly saturated as S6 . How does it look side by side with iPhone 6?
I hope it doesn't lag By the way how is the battery life and your impression over all?
many thanks

LG G4 Bad OIS

Looks like the G4's OIS is too aggressive and the videos taken look shaky.
Is this something future G4 owners will have to live with or can this be fixed by a software update, or perhaps a third party camera app?

I think LG depends too much on the OIS. OIS should work with DIS, not be an either-or situation.
The OIS in the G4 has more travel than the S6, which means it wants to stabilize the picture when the camera is moving during video and then snaps back more when it hits the end of the travel. The net result is, paradoxically, shakier video when the camera is moving around. This issue with video and OIS was pointed out in the Anandtech review of the S6, and was considered the probable reason that the iPhone 6+ disables OIS for video and uses only EIS.
I haven't tried it, but I've read that using EIS in conjunction with OIS on the S6 causes the video the pitch all over the place. Since OIS can't be disabled, it was recommended to disable EIS.
Technically, the OIS in the G4 is OIS 2.0 as they added another axis.
Yeah, that does not look good.
Yes, a software update can chill out the censors activities. The hardware is not just independently acting on it's own.
Umm....Those videos were taken at 1080p....not UHD setting. Not sure how that affects OIS.
All I can say is that my G3 takes very steady video on UHD...nothing as shaky or warping like as that video showed for the G4. I can't imagine LG screwing up so badly with the G4. I really want the G4 because of its better contrast screen(once thing I always found annoying is that the G3 always looked a bit grey/washed out compared to OLED screens). I will be looking to get the G4 full price, not on contract....so really hope this OIS thing gets sorted out.
Quite frankly, the OIS issue isn't really a big deal unless you really like taking video while walking around. For typical video shooting, OIS helps way more than it hurts.
Keep in mind these are early G4's with a non final firmware.
On the other hand if you send reviewers a G4 better have the OIS fixed.
Let's hope it will be not that bad.
The conclusions are too early.
The person who posted an another video of speed test said that this is not a review unit, It is a consumer unit which all consumers will use in comments when someone asked
Ha love the idea of quoting one early review and then stating it is fact and gospel. Ridiculous.
I am buying it. No matter what is OIS doing. It's better with it then without. I can't understand why we even talking about something that is hitting the shelves at the end of the month [ here in Europe ].
I use my G3 for video very heavily. (got over 2tb of videos from it and its only been almost a year since I got it.) None of my vids are that janky as in those review videos.
Just have to wait until the G4 is out for a while...see what happens.

Yes I've had the g4 since last Tuesday - got it from a work mate in South Korea - and my videos look fine.
Silly LG ! why don't LG just use common sense? if they give unstable, unreliable and unfinished phone or software version phone to people for try they will publish and talk about all it deficiency, problem and other bad things, most of people publish video, opinion and review based on this initial hardware and software, so instead of promotion LG is actually damage his image and product and ruin the successful flagship launch by doing it, also LG need to understand that when they give phone to thousands of people to try give them a best looking phone instead of just giving plastic version to every tester or reviewer, do you thing any tester or reviewer can impress their friends or family by showed this unimpressive plastic version???
One thing I will say, I just did a video testing myself with my G4. The video was a little shaky then what I thought was recorded but what did annoy me was in auto mode the focusing was just horrible.
This camera software is definitely not finished

Usually OIS can be disabled through build.prop
upload this file found here system/lib/hw/camera.msm8xxx.so
i will find what needs to be added to build.prop to disable ois

Maybe we should disable OIS and try to figure out a way to have DIS.
And on this review they say it has better stabilisation?

Would there be any way to disable OIS on a G3? Sorry to go a bit off topic with my question but this thread is the only one I could find anywhere on the web mentioning the possibility if disabling OIS on an LG phone.
I use my phone as a dash cam when driving my car on race tracks. OIS give a wavey distortion due to the various G forces encountered.
Defcomg, will a solution for the G4 work on a G3?
Upload camera.MSM8974.so from g3 I will find the build.prop property needed to disable ois
Sent from my NX503A using XDA Free mobile app
Edit:
Here are the OIS Control params they can be added to an opensource camera app such as a better camera/opencamera/freedcam
Key
Code:
"ois-ctrl"
Values
Code:
"preview-capture","capture","video","centering-only","centering-off"
this is from a g2 pro lib but it was the same in g3 lib not sure if it applies to g4
Thanks defcomg for a quick reply. I don't see any access to system/lib/hw/camera. I'm going to bet my phone needs to be rooted. I can give that a go but it may take a while for me to learn how. Sorry I'm a low level user. And Verizon is pounding me to update to Lollipop which I have been hesitant to do. (I read lots of complaints about battery degradation and wi-fi issues.) I should probably go ahead and do that in case doing it later unroots the phone.

Question: turn off video stabilization or leave on?

I've read the video stabilization option is software related and some have turned off on the s6 to only utilize the OIS hardware. What is the best setting for our S7 edges? My last phone was the S4 this camera is leaps and bounds over that but I've noticed if I shake the phone a bit while recording video is does seem to show that in the video on playback. I've never owned a phone or camera with OIS so is OIS just for small hand tremors or something ? Thank you!
ois is for stabilizing the photo or video but it's not completely fool proof. You can take 2 videos one with ois on and another with it off. In my testing the one with it off is more shaky while the one with it on makes the recording look more fluid if that makes sense. Shakes are still seen just not as jerky or harsh.
I personally like it off (just OIS, no EIS). Turning software stabilization on did make the video slightly smoother, but it also caused some edges to appear odd (fuzzy / jittery).

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the LG V30 come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I posted a video on my YouTube channel. Quality does seem pretty good so far!

Very nice. Overall, in good light at least, the camera is pretty top notch. Seemed to have some slight issues autofocusing on close up but may have not been the camera fault? Also, I really find the OIS very stable and the wide angle is even pretty stable too, HOWEVER, the only issue I have is that there is some intense wobble with the whole picture every few seconds when you are walking... that is quite frustrating, but overall I do love the stabilization.
Video Low Light Footage
Heres another video but in low light auto.
Initially I thought it looked good but upon reviewing the upload it sucked so bad.

Yeah, it wobbles like crazy, but I think it can be fixed with software updates. You can't image how horrible was OP5 camera in the beginning, but the fixed everything related to image stabilization in few months :good:

LG camera is much better. OP5 has no OIS, and all pictures look blurry when you zoom in even a little bit (watercolor look).
i was very disappointed with my OP5 camera. i am not disappointed with LG.
The only thing bad about the LG V30 camera is the front camera.. Its worse than op5
The portrait mode can be done with the pixel camera app but you have to move ur phone a bit for it.. Its a workaround and not a starightforward fix.
