[Q] Note 3 says "Insufficient Memory" when installing apps Not Rooted - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum posting so bear with me. After gruesome research i've come up empty handed so i'm dying for some help.
So I was trying to update apps on my note 3 for Verizon, when i received a "insufficient memory" warning on my phone. I don't have this phone rooted, cause i hear you can't, besides the point. anyways, i was like okay let me delete some apps, i went to storage and something caught my eye. I have a 32gb note 3, but it only says i have 694mb left. i noticed that my count is wrong. it says i have almost 6 gb of apps installed. plus the 7 gigs of system memory and the rest are mb's worth of data! then i figured it was maybe hidden files or something, but i can't figure it out.
what gives?? at first i figured it was all the bloatware apps i turned off, but even after turning them on, it still shows the same numbers. Has anyone encountered this before and if so, can anyone help me?
thanks a lot ahead of time. any help will be greately appreciated. ive included images of what i mean.
New info: i added up the numbers and it seems there is almost 20 GB of unaccounted memory being used.

Maybe a reset will help

YOu don't say what ROM you are on so try DL and run SDFix from play store - it SOUNDS like you're trying to install everything in System which was a symptom of the Kitkat memory thing.

The phone is not rooted. It's just stock android on this Note 3. I've had it for almost a year and I just noticed this issue. As a matter of fact, I actually was able to somewhat back it up and factor reset. as I was installing my apps again I noticed something weird that I had not paid attention before. For example, on google play download screen it said that GTA San Andreas was 1.24gb file size as it was downloading, but then when you see it in app manager, it's only MB worth of data. So i've noticed small amounts of unaccounted used memory. That's the main problem. I don't know if anyone actually knows what the heck is going on but i would love to know. Thank you in advance again.

OK, something to try - remove your extSDCard and use an adapter to view it on PC/Mac and see if there is anything on there. Copy anything you want to save to a folder on the computer. Place the card back in the phone and format it IN the phone (Settings/Storage. Then see if you still have an issue.
After, you can copy back the things you want on the card.

Running out of memory?

I am running into the issue when I try to run an app there isn't enough memory. I don't have anything running in the back ground. I find that if I delete all my sms/mms it removes the problem for a while until it fills up again. I guess my question is what else can I clean out to gain more memory. I thought I was saving everything I could to the SD card. How do I isolate which programs are using the most memory? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!
Sincerely,
Lou
Clear Temp & Install to Storage Card
Hello.. I was having the same problem as well. I bought this phone about a month ago and I love it. I started getting a memory error, and eventually the phone stopped receiving texts and notifications. Very frustrating.
I searched online and found a helpful page and then decided to reinstall apps to the storage card. It takes some digging but you can also find tweaks for storing email attachments, temp files, etc. to the storage card (haven't checked, surely the folks here at XDA have suggestions to make this easier). Finally I discovered this really cool little app called cleanRAM.
I've noticed an improvement. Mainly because it seems the HTC apps sure love to eat up local memory and make things run rather sluggish on the Imagio.
I started with the "Troubleshooting: HTC Imagio (Verizon) Sluggishness/Freezing" over at the HTC forums.
(I guess I'm too new to post a link. Sorry!)
And then thought really long and hard about installing software to the storage card. I figured because I never remove it, and its a 8GB card, probably not a bad idea to start doing it.
I had to really think about it because I prefer to save my storage card space for music and pictures.
Anyway, I would install anything system-related such as file finders, registry editors, .Net CF, today launchers, Gyrator, cleanRAM etc to the device. Everything else such as Google Maps, 3rd party browsers, games, GPS utilities, etc. is now installed to the storage card.
I just found this today and it seems to work pretty well. Try searching for "cleanRAM windows mobile" in Google.
Hey XDA folks.. surely you guys have placed more tips and tweaks elsewhere for this sort of thing, specific to the Imagio..??
The only thing you should install to the device itself are things like MODS, not APPS.
ESPESCIALLY NOT the CF Framework. It is hugh!!!
As a general rule... MODS to Device. APPS to Storage Card
Hey, so I'm slow..
I haven't checked back here in a while. So I'm a little slow!!
Yeah, you know I never really gave much thought to where to install software to, and got into the habit of always internal. Ever since experiencing the memory issue on the Imagio, I changed that habit pretty quickly.
What I find interesting is, if a techie like me had all these "problems" I can only imagine what non-techies must go through. I feel bad for them, because if they would read the manual, take time to research Imagio memory issues, and take the time to tweak their phones they wouldn't have so many problems!
Anyway, thanks much for the tip. Been wanting (yes.. wanting) to do a hard reset just to clean things up and to install mods and apps in the right spots.
My only concern is with Bing. When I do the hard reset, I probably won't even start it. I miss the old version. It's installed to the ROM, correct? So should I accidentally start it and it automatically upgrades, where should the upgrade go.. internal memory, or storage card?

App starts to load then goes back to home screen

I can't find this anywhere else, so here goes. I downloaded Plants vs Zombies, it worked for a while, then I ran Link2SD and move it. It starts to load, then goes right back to the desktop with no error.
I unlinked it, same issue, completely uninstalled link2sd, put a different SD card in and it does the same thing. this happened with another app, and once I moved it back to internal memory, it worked fine. Not so lucky with PvZ.
I have to assume that there is still something written in a file somewhere that is causing it, just no idea where to look.
I am running Thor 14.2 if that is any help
I also used Switch me, thinking that may help.
Any ideas are appreciated, at this point it is not so much that PvZ doesnt work, though my kids love it, it is that I would like to know why something doesnt work.
i have considered going into CWM and formatting internal memory, but that seems drastic.
Thanks in advance

Only thing i can think of is to look for a folder with the title or Developers name on it . Delete that then reinstall the game. if you are root go to system/apps and look for it there and delete ..
Other then that Post this in the Rom Developer's thread..

SM-T23ONU Google play services accidentally deleted.

This might sound like a stupid question lol but I deleted play services and have no idea how to get it back can someone please help for anyone wondering yes I'm rooted.

I have the exact same problem as OP, on the exact same model, and I had already tried that site, but I can't figure out how to know which variant I need? Also, I will probably need tips on HOW to install it properly (I'm rooted, if that matters, but am still at a fairly basic knowledge level and try to touch as little as possible). TIA
Still really needing help/guidance on the specifics here... poor kid's tablet has been useless for months and I'm terrified to do something wrong again.
i dont think that when u download .apk variant means much..... if you install as .zip then yes but nit as .apk i guess.... i mean you cant brick or anything when you install regular .apk
Okay, spent HOURS on this thing, and still can't get it installed... whether I download/install from chrome on the tablet, or download/sideload on the pc, or download from MoboMarket on the tablet, or from the app on the PC, every time the installation fails because apparently I'm "out of space", even though I have deleted EVERYTHING possible (safe) from the system memory and have over 2.5gb free, and the apk is around 45mb... really wishing I could afford to just buy the poor kid an iPad, so the amount of space we have is almost actual, and I wouldn't have to spend hours upon hours rooting, mounting folders, moving apps to SD card, every single time, and STILL always having no space to install due to internal memory, while the SD card has loads of nearly useless space. He just wants to play games, lol!!! (sorry for the ramble, just seriously frustrated, more than I've ever been with our iphones/pods, and I still have the fun of figuring out how to do all of this on my other kid's Neutab... not feeling the Android love, since it made external storage useless for apps).

Continually "insufficient storage"

I have a rooted S5 w/ 16GB of internal storage, but I'm rarely able to update/download new apps. I have to scrounge for apps to delete for a half hour just to get it to let me download a new app or update an app. I have moved just about all the apps I can to the SD card (32GB, less than half used).
In the storage screen it says I have used 14.88GB in apps, and <20MB in everything else with "Free space" around 400-500MB. I usually have to get it to mid 500s before it will let me do anything on it. To make matters worse, somehow the apps I uninstall keep reinstalling themselves.
My problem seems to be this big "Applications" thing - which isn't right. I have some large apps, but they keep all their data on the SD card (like podcasts with PocketCasts). On my applications manager, from top down in size - facebook @ 190MB, google play services at 156MB, google app at 134MB... dropping off fairly quickly after that, so no way its 15GB worth.
What am I missing? Do others constantly have this problem? It is getting ridiculous! No reason that I can see that there should be a big bunch of stuff that is counted as used when it isn't.
Some things I've tried:
I heard about something the dumpstate/logcat, I cleared it but nothing got better
I used adb to set the default install location to the external SD card (I forget the exact command), as far as I can tell it is still trying to install in the internal SD card.
Any suggestions or more information needed?
EDIT:
More information thanks to DiskUsage (forgot I can download APKs - which install fine). It shows my internal SD card breakdown as 10796MB overall, 2612MB app data, 7815MB "System data", and 340MB free space (plus some other misc. that makes up the difference). I don't have a great understanding of how this is partitioned, but I'd imagine the ~16GB has 5GB off limits for ROM stuff? Then what is taking up nearly 8GB as "System data"? Is this normal?
EDIT 2:
Looks like it was creating duplicates in data/app (on a lot of phones I think this is data/app-lib). I used root explorer to purge the duplicates, and now have nearly 3GB free instead of a couple hundred MB!
I have the same problems but I use DiskUsage from the Play Store. Most of the time it's my cache for the download manager has several gigs of wasted space. Clearing cache fixes it for me.

I'll check that out the next time I am able to install an app but I should mention I also tap the "cached data" in the storage manager thing (in settings). Usually doesn't work I also use CleanMaster, which seems like it works, some times.
EDIT: Just checked it out, that's awesome! I have been looking for this kind of app, I use WinDirStat on windows that does something similar.

Can't run any game. All apps run fine. Wat?

So I destroyed my S6 the other day and decided to give Huawei a go for what's left of my contract. Pretty impressed so far actually. The only problem I have is that I can't seem to run any game from the store. They install just fine but when you try to run them they throw you right out.
I'm running stock Android 6, rooted with just a few Xposed modules, I don't think that's the culprit, but honestly I really have no idea. I'm also using part of my 128 gigs SD card as internal storage, so maybe that's what causing trouble? I really hope not because I just migrated a crapton of music on it and reformating it now would suck. Anyone else got this, or knows how to fix it?

I think Xposed is guilty. Remove xposed and see if ur issue is fixed.

Thanks for your input. I was about to do just that but then I tried switching preferred storage back from external to internal and all of a sudden I was able to launch games, download additional content and actually run them. I will look into that a bit more as soon as I have time but it seems like there's some glitch related to using SD storage as internal...

Try a full wipe then change the applications path to external sd card - reboot - the n install the apps.

I jumped the gun an did just that, but unfortunately after rebooting I'm stuck at the usual "this device cannot be trusted". I can access recovery just fine but I can't do much with that at this point except reflashing, which I guess is what I'm gonna do as soon as my snail pace connection manages to download a full ROM....
