[Q] should i upgrade to lollipop? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there!
i own Note 3 n9005 MJ7 rooted ,stock rom, with TWRP Recovery and my Jellybean 4.3.
i have highly customized my phone to the point its perfect for me, from the apps i need to its design.
my question is, there are some apps id like to buy install like UPSM, and i cant because it wont run on JB.
should i upgrade to LP? will it do something to my apps and designs? my data? my root??
waiting forward for your reply! thanks!!

My advice is stay with what you have. I "upgraded" to the Polish stock rooted Lollipop a couple of weeks ago and have had not end of grief with buggy apps (Titanium Backup & Dropbox) and battery drain. I will probably go back to Kitkat because the SD card permissions policy with Lollipop is making my phone almost unusable. Kitkat 4.4.2 is very good, especially with Xposed.

Get a custom rom

I just ditched the Polish ROM I mentioned above & have flashed Alexandr's Devbase ROM and all the problems I was having with the Polish ROM have melted away. No more annoying SD Card permissions nonsense!

thanks for replying... how would a custom rom help me with my issues?
any other more relevant suggestions maybe?

There's not a major issue with keeping your set up as you like it. LP and/or AOSP/CM ROM's can all be set up how you want, usually quite easily. Even with a clean flash it takes maybe an hour to do.
Not sure what the above issue with TiBu was - works fine for me but I have stopped Restoring Apps DATA and only restore the apps.
Before I change ROMs I make sure...
- full Nandroid of current system is done
- New ROM and SuperSU are on my extSDCard
- TiBu is up to date with backups to extSDCard
- Titanium app is backed up to a zip file on the extSDCard
- Contacts are exported to extSDCard
- Call Logs Backup and Restore is done to extSDCard
- SMS Backup & Restore is done to extSDCard
- Settings are backed up using ROM Settings Backup to extSDCard
- I have copies of my various folders needed over on extSDCard. examples are SPenCommand, Notifications, Ringtones, AutomateIt and Viper4Android
Then I can do whatever I like and Restore things easily to exactly how I like them
As I said, takes about an hour from full wipe (except MicroSD obviously ) to new setup.

I'd wait for 5.1.x... but Lollipop is ok. I just don't think in terms of battery life and smoothness as good as KK yet. 5.1x should improve things.
Custom roms are fine - but many think their custom rom is the best and works great --- yet when you try them, you find bugs. So just be aware that nothing is really flawless - it just depends what you're willing to live with. Be sure to read about each rom and any issues before flashing (and follow instructions carefully).

I will follow Bendigo but adding.
My 2 cents..
Upgrade your mobile to every available option after JB.. taste it..
There is always a way to revert back if you are not happy..

[Noob Time] Why FLash To CM 10.1 ?

Good Evening Dudes
I'm just introduced on this section and it's first time than i ve had a stuff like this awesome samsung
Smooth Fast Strong And God ! it's the beautifull customisable stock rom (it's really beautifull to compare with htc stock rom)
well the question is not here and the target also
i've never had the oppotunitities to try a CM 10.1 on any device Htc desire x hasnt official CM and not possible to port CM10.1 cauz Htc doesnt provide the kernel source.... damn
(it's was juste for put in situation)
What's the real interest -Gain can i expect with the CM10.1 on the Galaxy S4 ?
Whith this rom it's sound interesting to put a custom kernel also.
what can we do with cm 10.1 than we cannot with a stock rom ?
Yeah a know , i can make a backup on my stock rom , flash the cm 10.1 try and if doesnt like it restore to the backuped stock.
Thanks for your time
If you had any other suggestion better than the CM 10.1 (i know it s on nightlies sound like equal as alpha but
topic is open :s
Well the Stock ROM is pretty much as bloated as a whale. CM is only 200MB in size, so first of all it will save space on your internal memory. Second of all, you won't have a lot of processes running in the background like you do now, your phone will be a LOT more responsive. Ofcourse, as with any custom ROM, there will be some bugs and those ROMs will need testing and updates (that's why nightlies exist). But eventually there will be stable versions and imo, it'll beat the stock any day. On the other hand, the stock ROM has some functions like the IR blaster, the smart-pause, smart-scroll and hover function, etc. If you're a big fan of those things, stick with your Stock ROM. But if you would like to a clean, simple, bloat free and faster experience than you have now, a custom ROM is a great way to achieve it. But that's not the only thing ofcourse, CM also has some extra functions and customization options you won't find in your stock ROM, you can tweak your system quite a lot and there are some things I couldn't live without (for example swapping your menu key for your recent apps switcher, and putting the menu function on the long press ).
Thanks a lot
Sound really interesting
CM 10.1 it's more in touch with i'm looking for
The actual build of CM 10.1 can be used on a basic day usage ? or it's better to wait a few days ?
If i flash the cm now ? need also to flash another kernel or just flash the zip by philw touch recovery ?
can i come back to my stock backuped rom after if i want ? with the restore function of philz touch recovery ?
I'm using Philz Recovery too and yes you can flash CM10.1 from there (I have the latest build from June 12th on it). Before you flash, make your sure you wipe/factory reset your phone in Philz Recovery. You might also need to flash the CM10.1 rom 2 or 3 times (the second time it usually works), on the first try it always gives a Status 7 error (don't worry). Look at the thread for the Offical CM10.1 Nightlies, there's a lot information there!
It's working pretty good for me, I haven't found any major bugs so far. Just make sure you make a Nandroid backup in Philz Recovery first (and store it your external SD card for safety and to save space ofcourse ). You can always return to that backup through the restore function in Philz Recovery yes.
Also, if you update your CM10.1 with a new nightly build (for example next week, or next month), do it manually and flash it in the recovery each time. Updating it from the Settings->About->Cyanogenmod Updates menu bricked my phone today, so I guess there is still a bug there. Besides that, there are no issues what so ever according to me.
PS: You're from Liege? I'm from Genk
last question before the first try
With the original Cm we need to flash gapps separately or it's inside the rom ?
If external suppose to take the last release on goo
If I remember correctly you need to flash it separately
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Try This one -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2296266
Yeah after flash the rom 4 times finally she install correctly ( 3 times error7 but no affraid)
Ui is clear, phone running smooth and very well no issue with wifi or 3g
The first bug i ve seen was about the carrier name -- the carrier name is showed like an id on a database (think the code for showed the cells with carrier name is not correct)
For the rest no speciq issue detected
Thanks a lot for your help
PS : i ve also find a answer to one of my question
when use cm you must flsah the gapps separately and link is coming on cyanogen page.
I ve read also than the build for the S4 T-mobile seems to work fine on this phone more bugs corrected on it ?
No trying BT for the moment cauz i dont had BT device
@disturbed : i ll try the rom linked this evening . Thanks a lot

[Q] Imperium ROM SG S4 question, updating! (4.4.2 KK)

Hey!
New to the XDA forum, not new to Android!
I will cut to the chase and explain really fast what I need help with.
I have been using the Imperium ROM 4.4.2 KK for a few weeks now and I love it.
But as of a few days ago, Update 4.0 (up from 3.6) was released, and my phone just won't stop spamming me with "upgrade to the latest version 4.0!" . However, as far as I can tell, I have to re-download the 4.0 ROM and flash my phone entirely over again.
So, TL;DR:
I am using the Galaxy S4 Imperium 4.4.2 ROM 3.6 and I want to;
a)Upgrade to 4.0 without re-flashing my and having to re-install all apps, backup photos etc.
b)Turn off the spam notifications about updating.
Thanks in advance, sincerely

I have the same problem i was using 6.0 and now 7.0 is out can i just perform ota update or do i have to donwload the rom and flash it.....what about my apps installed in 6.0 can i just apply update from sd in recovery...i dont want to reinstall all those apps again.plz help
Guys come on. These are really basic questions.
- If you are not prepared to wipe everything from time to time, then you should stay away from custom roms.
- You can just try it yourself if it works. Make a backup and flash away. If you got problems, fully wipe and restore your backup.
Imperium
Hello, I managed to install Imperium Rom on to my phone but when I try to sync my phone with my samsung account it says sync error and also when I try to restore my phone with my samsung account it says could not connect to server but now I have gone back to my stock rom everything is fine. do you know what the problem could be?

[Help] choosing the right rom for my needs

Hello guys! fist thing, I searched for the answer on other threads but can't find what I'm looking for. Basically I'm a newbie in this sort of things, I rooted my Note 3 yesterday and now I seek for a good rom for my phone. I felt the urge to do so because I wanted to get rid of the stock apps (like chaton, s health and so on. I tried to uninstall them with system app remover but they keep coming back as soon as I turn on the Wifi) and to have more control of my device, but since there're so many roms I got a bit confused, especially when it comes to kernel stuff etc.
I want a stable rom (with a normal battery drain) which gives me the possibility to use the S-Pen (I use the stylus often for taking fast note and stuff) and NFC.
I really liked the DarkWolf rom which basically convert a note 3 into an S7, battery life is good, S pen works fine BUT seems like it comes with samsung bloatwares and NFC doesn't work.
So, is there a rom that respect my needs?? what about the kernel? which one should I use??
thanks in advance
PS. My note 3 is the N9005 model, rooted, running official Samsung android 5.0
Go for AryaMod - http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/rom-aryamod-v1-tw-lollipop-t2990920
If you by any chance don't mind about NFC then I'd go for Phronesis - http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...om-phronesis-rom-v1-0-stable-feature-t3241910
Both have solid battery life without the need of tweaking the kernel. The kernel is good out of the box.
About your problem of apps installing back then why don't just disable them from Settings- Application Manager or disable auto download updates from play store. Since your are rooted you can use a root explorer and go to /system/apps and /system/priv-app to delete them completely.
Remove bloatware via Titanium Backup Pro .
Dont confuse yourself with kernels use the one that comes with the rom .

First thanks for the reply I can overlook NFC if Phronesis is better or has additional features than Aryamod however is there something good based on marshmallow?

Marshmallow ports has lots of bugs and battery drains a bit faster than LP though not that much. I'm currently on Darklord S7 Edge Beta2 port. Though all basic things are working like Wifi, BT and Data so I can do stuff with an internet. Camera has bugs like modes are not working only the stock capture and recording.
Some bugs for marshmallow based on darklord's rom, some are already fixed in bete 2;
- Always on not working
- Sound alive not working
- Sview not working
- Some camera mode not working (hardware limited)
- Hotspot not working
- Do not disturb time setting FC
- Handwriting not working
- Direct input cant change language
I think Phronesis rom has more features since its a Note5 port with a little touch of edge feature. I'm quite happy with it overall. It's the rom I'm using when going out of town or out of the country. The thread also has a Q&A section so you can find things faster when you encounter a problem. It also has some alternatives for NFC in q&a.
Ah totally forgot about Titanium Backup. As @JJEgan said you can remove bloatware from it as well instead of manually deleting them using a root explorer.
EDIT:
Phronesis rom comes with a kernel so you don't have to worry about them. It is good out of the box without tweaking it. For Arya I forgot already, maybe it is using the stock kernel and that is the reason why you have to flash official rom first before flashing it.
Thank you bratboo and JJEgan for the help. I think I'll give a shot to Phronesis waiting for a more stable marshmallow based rom

Is there a Custom ROM / Rooted ROM for the S8 with automatic / easy Updates

Hello everyone,
I got a new S8 and am wondering, which ROM to choose. I have used Superman Rom on my S7 for a long time now and was happy with it, despite the fact that I had to wipe with every update.
Titanium Backup made it a lot easier - it still was a lot of work.
So my Question:
Is there a ROM which can be updated without wiping?
What I want is basically ROOT, google apps and if possible the original (or improved) Camera App from the S8. And it schould be stable.
I am aware of lineageOS, but the S8 support seems not to be so good by now.
Thanks for every hint,
H

ok so basically
stock s8 firmware rooted : no more Ota and many root related limitations etc, but maybe able to flash Ota manually not sure
s8 firmware based custom roms: as with every new update the rom is rebased to latest firmware, always clean install always as the rom is a modified firmware, so always different (of course dirty flash might work but often result in issues of all kinds)
and with aosp based roms , most of the time yes, to update you can just flash rom then gapps and then just wipe caches/dalvik and reboot is its the same rom as the rom is the same and in fact just stock android so no big changes between builds.
But yes it's annoying but clean install is ALWAYS the best option, and easy update = no rooting
and for stability, the closer to stock the rom is , the most stable it would be. (and good camera = forget about aosp)
so I would recommend you batstock rom or batman rom (s8 version of superstock or superman), but update without wiping, except on unrooted ... not really
Thanks for your detailed reply - That's what I was afraid of to hear.
I will try to live with the limitations of non rooted stock - otherwise Batman or Batstock will be the next to try.

In my experience, it's often more stable to root the stock firmware and then remove the bloatware (using Titanium Backup or Link2SD). That way you have a rom that's tailored for the device and you don't have issues like the camera not working on custom roms, certain video codecs that aren't supported, ...
Unless there's an official CyanogenMod or LineageOS for the device.

That is what I want, but can't seem to get it done. The newest Magisk is not working. Older versions aren't. Anyone got it done? Just need root to get storage rights for external SD for Syncthing..
ok, got root working now. used the "old" way, supersu, for an old ROM..
