This could be a Noise Cancelling mic,
Now i know for sure that there is many different prototypes floating about, the HD I used in London did not have this noise cancelling mic hole(if that is what it is). But the early prototype video from Solopalmari had the same pin hole right by the flash.
I think there is definitely three prototypes of this phone, and i would not like to hazard a guess at what one we will end up having;/
Look for videos of the HD in the london events, you will not see a pin hole by the flash, yet we see one in this pre-release video...
Check the pictures below, one is a screen capture from the GSMonline.pl video, and the other was from the event in London three weeks ago, where did the hole go? I asked a HTC rep at the event, where did the noise cancelling mic go, he said that was on only an early prototype(solopalmari video prototype). Now it has made another appearance....
HTC WHAT PHONE ARE WE GETTING??? lol
The plot thickens
JD
Yes I noticed the little hole and I also think it's a mic. I hope it is a mic for sure! I've noticed some prototypes have the SRS/Dolby branding and some don't too.

Just would love to know what phone im actually getting, it seems that HTC themselves dont even know;(
The two pictures on the OP confirm this, I hope it does come with noise cancellation

The screen and now this, I quite like a bit of mystery.

also the first video showing the DHD which was uploaded by Solopalmari all those months back has a hole there too.

Yep,
That was the video I stated on the OP about Solo's video... This was deemed to be a prototype when i asked a HTC rep at the London showcase... Now it seems there is an actual advanced prototype of this version. The old one was a metalic blue casing, now this one has a brown casing.
Man this is freaking me out, haha
I hope it does end up with a noise cancelling mic, It would enhance the desirability of this phone;P
JD
The Mic is missing from the retail version, which means that the model that GSMonline.pl is not the retail Desire HD!!!
JD
It was a prototype which was sent back after the review.

Strange to show a prototype in a online review for the actual retail product?
JD
A second mic for noise cancellation would have been cool, even without it the phone is still mouth watering.
Go ask one of the guys who has their phone already. They should be able to tell you if it's there or not
The mic hole isn't there on mines so must just be there on the prototypes
Hi!
Im very intrested in the sound volume / quality on this phone when on speaker!
Anyone can film a video of it playing music or something?
Thanks in advance!
Can't give you any videos, but I've tried the Arc, and the speaker is very impressive for such a thin device. Louder and richer sound than any other phone I've heard!

Give me a couple of hours and I'll see what I can do I can also attest that the speakers are very loud and clear though. The only other phone I've heard with this kind of speaker quality is the Toshiba Regza phone, and that's a Japan-only model.

**Edit: Fixed the first link.
Sorry for the wait! Finally got some work out of the way.
Clip 1
Clip 2
Here are 2 clips, the first clip being a comparison of 3 phones I happen to have handy, and the second clip being some music (equaliser off). Volume is at max for all devices in both clips. You might have to wait a little while for Youtube to finish processing.
For the comparison, left to right: Arc, SGS and the Toshiba Regza phone.
All 3 have pretty decent speakers, but I would put the Arc at the top and the Regza at the bottom, because despite the loudness there's noticeable distortion. It's pretty close between the Arc and the SGS though.
I chose Angry Birds over music for the comparison because all the music in my library has been re-encoded at 89db, which is a little quieter than typical MP3s (around 100db). This might explain why the 2nd clip sounds a little quiet.
I also flipped the phones over in both clips to demonstrate the effect of each phone's speaker positioning in blocking the sound. As you'll notice, the Arc sounds much better when it's not flat against the table.
You linked the same video twice ^^ Arc does sound cleaner compared to the other devices! How's the Arc's headphone jack with really good in-ears or a big headphone? I have a Sony Walkman (A805) that should get replaced with the Arc if the sound quality is high enough.
Something else, could you give me the name of that case you have around your Arc, looks very well made!

Whoops, you're right. Updated!
Unavoidably subjective but I think the Arc has slightly better S/N than the SGS, and comes across a little stronger at the high end. Not a huge difference but noticeable if you're an audiophile. I've tested it on my Westone UM2's, but I haven't had a chance to really listen, so I could be wrong!
I can't draw any worthwhile comparisons because I haven't used either a dedicated mp3 player or wired earbuds for years now.
The case is the clear TPU case made by Elecom. It probably has the best cutouts (compared to the Rayout and Buffalo cases I looked at earlier), but the finish is kind of sticky/rubbery in a bad way. Warm water with a bit of dishwashing liquid usually does the trick for TPU cases but it didn't work for this thing so I'm actually thinking of replacing it.
And Misty Silver is awesome

Please let us know you final thoughts on this as a music player.
Thanks for posting the info about the speaker I use the speaker phone a lot so it's quiet an important feature for me.

I still haven't really used the headphone jack that much, because I stick to bluetooth headsets these days. Convenience over sound quality for me lately
A bit of informal testing concludes that based on subjective opinion and S/N ratio, I would rank the Arc's 3.5mm jack output through my UM2's and Sony MDR-CD900ST's as follows (higher is better):
1. Hooked up to my PC with an M-Audio 2496 soundcard and through RCA to a fairly cheap BTECH BT928 amp.
2. Sony CMT-FX250 micro Hi-Fi unit.
3. Sony MZ-RH1 MD player
4. Xperia Arc / Sony NW-A1000 MP3 player (tied, they sound quite similar)
5. Galaxy S (which has great sound mind you)
6. Hooked up to my PC's default headphone jack using the onboard Realtek HD soundcard. I don't have recent drivers installed so take this ranking with a pinch of salt.
7. iPod 4G (one of the old HDD based ones)
This is based originally on LAME 320 cbr mp3s as opposed to lossless files.
Hopefully the items on the list aren't too obscure, it's just the stuff I happen to have in my apartment right now
In conclusion it's more than good enough for most, and excellent for a phone. The people that would find the Arc's sound quality non-satisfactory are likely the same ones that wouldn't consider using a phone as a music player in the first place. Or at least not without using a portable amp
I hope this gives you an idea!
Edit: Forgot to mention I used tracks with either strong vocals/acoustic guitar/heavy bass for the testing.
Edit 2: Added more items to the list.
Heh, I picked up a pair of Ortofon e-Q7's last time I visited Yodobashi Camera.
Should be nice with the Arc.
Thanks for all the good info BTW.

Nice! I'd love to know how good those things are. Not that I can afford to buy a pair right now
Didn't see an aggregation thread of this kind for the Note, thought it might be useful for people.
First off, the Engadget review, surprised me how positive they were!
Then I've got a few of my own pieces (with lots more to come, fire away if you have questions!
Unboxing:
How to Root (Odin method), also has first demo of MHL and the Note that I'm aware of (showing off Shadowgun with a PS3 controller):
What else have people seen that is cool?

I notice in none of those last two reviews do they mention the pentile matrix, or banding, or anything much of substance in relation to the screen. Precisely that sort of thing that makes me increasingly go off those major blogs reviews - they don't really get the concerns of us uber phone geeks...
More stuff, massive connectivity video:
Next part of my review is up here, covers entertainment aspects (audio quality, music and video playback, the browser, gaming).
Part one, if anyone missed it is here, and covers Unboxing, Initial impressions, Design/build quality, Screen and Benchmarks.

A review by Ben Stevens of the UK "Which" magazine that gives a nice demo of the Note plus a desk full of official Samsung add-ons including:
Additional Battery Charger/Desk Stand
Horizontal/Vertical Desk Dock Charger
Car Dock
MHL/OTG Interface Leads
Protective Flip Cover.
Thanks NZtechfreak for tip on getting the Youtube video embedded here and for all your excellent experiments and info on the Note.
Had never heard of the Phonejoy gamepad - now have one on back order. Also getting into MHL and OTG experiments myself !

You just need the ID tag, the string of letters and numbers after the "=" sign.
@htc6500uk: Thanks for that, I have the flip case, but haven't seen the other things.
I am sad to say that after all that waiting and pacing and nail biting, the Galaxy Note was NOT the gadget for me. I actually didn't give it much of a chance. I had it out of the box for about an hour and what I felt to be a "horrible back cover" convinced me to take out my sim, take my Galaxy Tab 5" down and put the Note up in it's place on eBay.
I am not big on tweaking and rooting etc. My gadgets just need to "FEEL SOLID" and the Note didn't .. My Galaxy Tab feels GREAT .. My iPhone 4s feels GREAT ... but the Note was lacking .. JUST MY OPINION .. some people want thin and light weight. I wear a purse so it doesn't matter.
FINGERS CROSSED for some other gadget to come around soon .. I'm kinda waiting for something like the Note from HTC .. I will be in search of a solid feeling gadget, with phone and data on T-Mobile. That's all.

This is the wrong thread for this type of post... but I must say - what about a unibody frame, beautiful full glass screen and classy (if a little slippery) textured back didnt "feel solid" to you?
You are quite vague in your criticism...
There are no 'official' threads here, frankly, a review is nothing more than opinion. Let's keep the door open to everyone and respect their opinions, people are entitled to them.
THAT... WAS... A REAL... PLEASURE... TO.... READ!!
Grab a cup of coffee or your favourite beverage and enjoy the review. I damn sure did.

You may read my ever updating blogs dedicated to the Galaxy Note here.
Mind you it may not be as professional as the rest of yours but will keep getting updated constantly.
Hmmn, read the GSMarena review, interesting that their audio results were so impressive (I wonder if they still have the problem with testing with headphones, Supercurio previously was very critical of their testing results). Good to see an objective test confirming what my ears told me about the loudspeaker.
The GPS coverage was pretty anaemic, I think mine is much better:

Yours was without doubt was better and a joy to watch. I actually watched the whole video/route.
Also I do enjoy reading GSMArena's reviews, because I'm use to them(very old visitor/follower) but surely they are biased from time to time(or at least they seem so) and many times I did not agree with their reviews/remarks/findings etc.
P.S: Different thread for this but, it's kinda tricky that they did NOT mentioned the Note's front glass, since they even state it on their specs. My guess? They did not bother to remove it from the specifications.
For the record NZtechfreak, I love your reviews... to the extent that I have androidnz on my google reader now.
It's rare to find such in-depth coverage of the actual user's experience with a phone.
Review from the Telegraph UK:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/samsung/8894595/Samsung-Galaxy-Note.html
2.5 star rating. Complaints about the Note not replacing pen and paper seem to be the main focus and criticism.
Although I am holding my final judgement of the note until I have it for a while (only had it for a week), my opinion so far differs sharply with this review. I am guessing that the Note will get panned by some for its size, regardless of features or performance.
-Alex-
The Telegraph are just a newspaper though right? Not specifically a tech site? Most newspapers are terrible uninformed when it comes to technology.
http://www.amazon.com/CIYOYO-Bluetooth-Wristwatch-Pedometer-Anti-lost/dp/B00NEQDUBS
Saw this and thought it interesting. Apparently it's new (no customer reviews). From the pictures I can deduce it's made by the same people who make the imfamous U8, which isn't really encouraging, but it looks fairly good for what I want it for. I'd be interested in it primarily for controlling music playback on my n5, but I suppose everything else would be a nice bonus. Anyone brave enough to go for it?
I'm more seriously considering the weloop tommy. Like a pebble, only semi-decent looking. Unfortunately you sacrifice software for looks.
EDIT: I found it on ebay! The official name seems to be the UU smart watch. China branding http://www.ebay.com/itm/251652613864
From all the stock photos I'm seeing, the screen isn't straight. Bad photoshop or reality?
Further edit: here is a link with the most detailed pics so far http://www.amazon.com/Smartwatch-Wristwatch-Multimedia-Smartphone-Geekbuying/dp/B00NHKA334
Fortunately it looks like the screen is straight, and it looks like a simple no nonsense UI. The home clock on this one looks kinda ugly to me though.

Received my S6 today from Samsung. When i collected the box i was surprised at how big it was?! On opening i was pleasantly greeted by a picture of Captain America on the side of an Avengers box. At first I was confused, but then remembered about the avengers themed phones. I didn't even ask for this version, but i got lots of freebies bundled in with the handset, bloody cool. Even more happy that i went for this handset now!

Here you go!
Got a free diary, adhesive phone stand and a sweet cover too! Plus the cool box that it came in
Very cool! Samsung is going hard with this Avengers tie-in. I saw the movie last night and you can clearly see Black Widow taking a video call on an S6
