All of these were taken at same time, 940pm EST. Quite dark to the eye but this picked everything up. I am going to go out in about 45 min and take damn near pitch dark ones.
And this was the moment I decided to return my S6

Stars....just amazing.
Perfect. As a former wedding photographer who decided to change hobbies, I sold ALL of my professional gear to buy a motorcycle lol. Now, with such powerful tools on a smartphone, I should be able to take semi-pro looking pics especially at night (where ALL phones up until recently virtually sucked balls).
I can't wait to get this phone tomorrow.

If you want a phone based off its camera only, Nokia Lumia 920 lol besides that phone, the G4's camera is supposed to be best on the market.

I had the Nokia 1020 on AT&T and it is hands down the best camera on a smartphone. But after having it for 2 months I returned it because I couldn't stand Windows Phone. The G4 is the closest to the 1020 that I've ever seen. The manual shutter and iso settings let me get pretty close to the 1020. That phone camera is still better though because of the 41MP and the ability to crop in majorly and still have an amazing photo. I'm not only picking a phone for the camera. It's the sum of the parts. Windows on the 1020 was a major breaking point. The total sum of the parts of the G4 make it better than the S6, in my opinion, not just the camera

Cameras phones on android would be galaxy k zoom which costs a third of of the price of the panasonic lumix cm-1 with its 1 inch sensor. The cm1 did not sell in many countries though and is quite pricey. An RX100 is a fraction of the cost.
i've had the k zoom for nearly a year now and been pleased with it. Nothing beats optical zoom. And it has a xenon flash which is a rarity now a days.
The thing is when you zoom the aperture gets smaller so you need a higher ISO to compensate or you could use a longer shutter which goes up to 16s. with people shots it means higher ISO.
In good light which is where the zoom can be used its the best out there and its OIS beats any other on android. No raw or manual focus though.

You should get a GOOD camera and compare the difference. You probably won't say the same thing after that.
Canon g11, Canon s90, or something equivalent (not all cameras are created equal)
^ Why would a $350-500 ACTUAL camera be a good comparison?
Those are cool shots man. I took some pics while in Alaska that blew me away at how good they look, even on a large pc screen. Very impressed with the camera as well.

What is your point? The SGS takes great pictures. Of course the S90 and G11 may take better pictures in certain situations, but the point of a camera phone is its always with you.
I went to a car show last weekend and brought my SGS and a Canon SD780IS. I ended up using my SGS the majority of the time because the pictures were amazing given everything was outdoors.
Have cameras
Since I do have a Canon G 11, Nikon D200 and D90 and I have to use all for my work They are all great cameras. The G11 is the best point and shoot out there) The comparison is not to compare cameras that have a 2.8 lens (1"+ aperture opening size) to one that is 1/16" lens, that is an incorrect comparison. The correct comparison is comparing to the other phone camera out there and this one is pretty easy and pretty decent compared to the 1/2 dozen I have had in the past.

Uh, because that is what a Vibrant costs?
Maybe you guys think that diffraction-limited, low dynamic range, under-saturated photos are great... but the only time I pull out any cell phone to take a picture is when I don't have a real camera with me.
They aren't horribly bad photos, but they aren't anything to write home about. You could get photos of the same quality from a $90 el cheapo digital camera.
If you make a post saying "hey, look how awesome these photos are", and the photos aren't awesome... then maybe its stupid of you get angry, eh?
Are you serious man?
Here I was thinking we were on a forum for phones.....
The effect
The point was showing the effect with a phone cam is possible and was kinda kewl not a rhetorical argument about the photos per-se I guess I should have mentioned I modified the camera app software as well, but I figured most of the ppl here would have already guessed that.

so you want to compare a $500 device that is practically a portable computer with a 5MP camera attached to it to a $500 device which is a PROFESSIONAL CAMERA with probably 12+MP.
Yeah thats a comparison. shut up.
The point the author and the rest of us are trying to make is that the pictures are amazing for what it is.
My girlfriend has a motorola RIZR Z3 with a piece of crap 1.3MP camera. she takes lots of pictures with it and sends them to me, and ya know what, they look pretty good coming from that piece of crap camera.
But when she sees the pictures i take with my nexus she's amazed that they came from a phone. Now do they look as good as the pictures from my olympus or nikon? hell no, but they sure as hell look damn good when you say they came from a phone.
And not everyone likes to carry around a big DSLR everywhere they go too. Hell i went up to Washington DC for a week long vacation and i didn't bring that thing along because of how bulky it is.
The man wanted to show pictures that in his opinion looked pretty good considering it was a cellphone. Im pretty sure we all know that for a fact cameras are only designed for quality pictures..and the only point you people are proving is how none of you care to show the world that you all waste your time with pointless arguments

Being realistic....a phone camera is just that, a phone camera.
Maybe in 5 more years they will take good pictures, but for now, not a single one is worth it to use as anything more than just a "it's all I had with me at the time" type camera.
My 10 year old Sony F550V blows my Vibrant out of the water in pic quality. Of course it has a real Zeiss lense....but hey

In my eyes, it doesn't. It does well and certain lighting conditions i do have to say but for most of the shots ive seen like the iphone vs. HTC One camera, the iPhone did better in nearly all of them to me. Once people get the non-demo models though we'll be able to see what others think.

To get some idea of how well the camera on any phone performs in different lighting hastag its name on Instagram
I personally am jealous of the camera on the iphone 4s/5. They seem to produce the sharpest pictures on Instagram and Facebook!
We can't tell yet the device software is not final and HTC didn't lift the reviews embargo yet and the didn't post many official samples either
Normally, I would like to see dpreview's comments for any camera reviews. gsmarena's camera section is also decent.
I think the argument is unless you're wanting to print photos on huge canvases etc then 4mp is more then enough for Facebook etc that most people use their camera phones for. And if you can develop a 4mp camera that is high quality with low light performance you're basically giving the majority what they want and need.
As a photo enthusiast I am glad to see them trying to get closer to what's necessary and needed rather then having a medium quality high pixel camera that I'll never use for top notch shots. I have a DSLR for that.

From a lot of comparisons I saw, there's no doubt that the best available mobile camera is Nokia 920 but hey, it's a windows phone.
Recently Sony released a Firefox OS ROM for some xperia phones. If Nokia decided to do the same releasing an oficial android ROM for Lumia series I could think about buying one but, that's not the case.
And about HTC One camera, maybe it's not the best but it's great enough for me.

When Maemo was in the transition of replacing symbian as nokia's primary OS they suddenly appointed a new CEO which came from Microsoft. And few months after they decided to ditch support for maemo & meego and decided to partner with windows. So most likely the reason why they went windows and not android is because microsoft infiltrated their administratiion. It all started with Stephen Elop.
How about Apple releasing iOS version for Lumia 820 and 920? Hahahha Nokia and android too much optimistic thought but let Nokia fall down again I think Nokia is under Microsoft's debt and ms is hypnotised Nokia to save their reputation in mobile world, Nokia will show their true color when his debt from Microsoft has finish atm Nokia don't want to angry Microsoft coz ms has been heavily feeded Nokia to make him healthy

I think it's a perfectly good OS, my sister has it. Very fast and fluid for what its a cheap phone.
I think they went with WP as they will be the manufacturer associated with it. Think iOS, think Apple (obviously) but for Android most people will automatically think Samsung.
I'd like to reiterate again, that demo units and preview units with unfinalized software have NEVER made a difference (for any phone) in the final quality of the camera. It'll be released in a few weeks. If it's **** now, it will still be **** later on. No more excuses. Optimism is no excuse for stupidity.
Here's one big problem with the HTC One. The 4MP is 4MP. You can go on and on about how it doesn't matter for facebook, but if we are going to place smartphone cameras to a higher standard (HTC says so), this compromise is almost dealbreaking. It's one step forward, two steps back. I take pictures of menus and sheets of paper and murals and such with text quite frequently. Even my Galaxy S2 with 8MP is sharper and easier to read than the blurry and poorly defined text the HTC One takes. Here's a text comparison.
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one-review-902p6.php
That's what you sacrifice with low resolution. Resolved detail. The text images are just the easiest way to see the problem with low resolution. It extends far beyond just text, Blurry faces, undefined outlines, and blur in general.
The other problem. The touted low light performance seems to be overblown. If you sacrifice megapixels for better low light, and the low light doesn't deliver, you just shot yourself in the foot. Here's a comparison in low light with the Nokia 920 and 720.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-One-vs-Nokia-Lumia-920-and-720-low-light-comparison-video_id40344
You can see the giant ass blotches of noise and grain, because the HTC image blows up the lighting and makes the noise and grain even more apparent. There's no fine detail, just a smear of color. Compared to the Lumia 920, it's almost like it has no OIS at all and the "ultrapixels" mean diddly squat. Most damning of all, is that the budget Lumia 720 takes better low light pictures. It doesn't have fancy OIS nor the same large pixels.
There are many more examples of the poor low light performance scattered about the net. This is the thing HTC touted as better than the rest, but so far its just middling if not mediocre.
In summation. If you want an average camera, or say "I don't give a shiz it's a camera-phone", this phone will fit the bill. But if you were expecting something more, some sort of major progress, you won't find it here. You will be better off with the Lumia 920 and its OIS. Or wait for the Lumia 1000 EOS which will even give point and shoot cameras a run for their money. But right now this is just a half-hearted attempt by HTC, with plenty of money thrown at advertising it but no confidence in making it a reality wit a bigger sensor, more pixels, better OIS, etc. The Galaxy IV will probably have a better camera. Hell, the Galaxy II and III have better cameras.

I looked through all the demo pictures and the ones taken by reviewers at MWC and the pictures where on par or better than the competition.
As for that GSM arena review, they describe the quality as being sharper and better overall than the LG G but then have photos that are blurry and say it is the One pictures but they don't match the full size pictures at the bottom of their review so I don't quite trust that source.
Honestly, if you want to take great pictures buy a point and shoot camera or a DSLR as nothing in a phone is going to out match them.
here are some samples from the One vs Nokia 920 and 720
I've came across Note2, S4, G2 and now I'm on Z1. And I've expected for camera to be top out of those, but left disappointed. I feel like hardware could do so much more, but that camera firmware is so.. so... Nah, don't even have word for it. It's like Krait 400 clocked at 0.5 GHz.
What was Sony thinking?
Colors are off, there's too much noise, no option for wide 16MP, or something like that, white balance is off... It's mess!
If Samsung had this sensor, I feel like it would rock 1020 with it's firmware.. Do you feel same?
Yes,I guess so.

highly disappointed, the camera is designed by the cybershot team man, how can it be so crappy. imagine processing is one thing, the functionality is a complete joke, 20 MP only then 8MP? Not even a 16MP 16:9 or 16MP 4:3. The sensor size would probably be great for 16MP photos, but 20MP is probably a bit too much. The auto mode is complete trash too, only time I ever get good shot is only under perfect light condition. Unless they are still trying to iron out a few things, or the cybershot team lacks experience writing software for ARM processor or something. There is no excuse of it being as what it is now. And it was out for a while and we still don't see any major improvement what so ever, they should be ashame of themselves.
Looks like not everyone disagrees with me like they did on my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2562211
Oh well, maybe the will improve it on the upcoming 14.2.A.1.114 firmware update.
Man I don't know why people complain so much about the camera! Maybe I'm just lucky but my phone takes absolutely brilliant pics! I threw a few pics onto a massive Samsung smart TV not so long ago and I was blown away by the quality! Sure it struggles a bit in low ligting conditions but honestly it's still good for a phone, I think people were expecting DSLR quality pics when they bought this phone or expecting it to be the same as a Sony Cybershot point and shoot camera? By comparison to the two cameras I mentioned, it will never be on par with those because it has a much smaller sensor. For what it is (a phone camera) it is brilliant.
I'm not denying that there is definite room for improvement on the software side but honestly currently it's still a killer camera (if you know how to use it properly)
I don't understand why people are so nit picky about this phone, people have ripped it to shreds over small details but at the end of the day it's a killer android phone worthy to be a flagship device. I know other's have had issues with displays... blah blah blah. Infact I did too, I had a tiny dead pixel on mine the first time I turned it on, sent it back and they gave me a replacement no questions asked! My point is, if you're so unhappy about the device then just sell it and buy another phone or if there's a fault with it then get it fixed or replaced under warranty instead of ripping the phone to shreds

It's not the camera that itself that people are complaining about. It's the auto mode. I think some of us know that it takes great photos with the right manual settings but what is the point of having the Auto mode if it doesn't work properly?
I really want to love this phone as it is probably the most elegant device out there, has excellent battery life, and the performance is one of the best but it's the unpredictable auto mode on the camera that bugs the crap out of me and most of the people who are not happy about the camera.

Ok yes, on that point I agree with you. Auto mode could be better. Im 100% sure that Sony keeps an eye on this forum as we are the most critical users out there, the average Joe probably doesn't care much about the camera and uses the phone for texting and calls so my point is they are aware of it and they will address it, give them time. They heard our screams with the bootloader fiasco! Btw Samsung wouldn't have even cared less about the issue but Sony does, so just wait for them to sort the software issues out.
First of all, Merry Christmas everyone
I've been shooting some photos yesterday and conclusion is this. Night or low light photos (indoors) looks awful, but daylight photos looks fantastic even on front facing camera. But, it's not proportional how awesome day photos looks like. I mean, there's so much detail, colors are good, and wb is just fine, but at night, there is so much noise, artifacts on front camera.. It's impossible that hardware is one to blame..
I sure hope Sony will fix it in new firmware update..

They don't want to take the effort to get better shots. One decent shot in the photo thread is all it takes to debunk them. Hardest thing to figure out is lighting. Get that right and the shots are fantastic. Same applies to any camera.

Was looking at the cybershot line and the bulk of them come with 1/2.3" sensors only the RX100 uses a 1 inch sensor. Meaning its around 4x bigger with carl zeiss glass.
The advantage these PS have is the optical zoom. But do they work well in auto in the hands of some one that cannot take a photo. No. Was just looking at vacation pics a friend took and so many of them were out of focus. Her compact has the same sensor size but only the outdoors photos come out ok. There is quite some noise in a double tap on the tab. Again using auto, indoors it uses a lower shutter speed and i was apalled to see 5/10 shots coming out blurred. The flash blows everybody away. When it does not you get a decent shot.
Indoors in artificial lighting in sub par lighting any compact size sensor is going to struggle. The hardest are indoors subpar lighting where you're forced to use the flash to avoid blur. Have to use higher ISOs in this case, no you won't be able to avoid noise but you will get better shots ie more natural than with a flash.

My point is, if you're so unhappy about the device then just sell it and buy another phone or if there's a fault with it then get it fixed or replaced under warranty instead of ripping the phone to shreds

yeah and then when they get the next device, they'll go spam the respective forum with more *****ing & whining. Take a look around the board and every camera gets bashed. This is normal. Expect it and ignore it.
Bandwidth bandits the lot of 'em
The reason we all expected this to be a great camera, is because Sony told us it was with all their marketing. I was so excited by the phone. But the camera was the reason I returned it. Otherwise, it is a splendid piece of kit.
judge for yourselves
as much of a supporter I am of android... iphones tend to have amazing cameras. ill watch the video later when i get home but its hard to judge IQ from a video.
It's really hard to say without knowing how the camera was set up on each phone. (They were at different resolutions, so what else is different?) However, assuming everything but the resolution is the same (a big assumption), and judging from the side-by-side video, it seemed to me that the iPhone tended to oversaturate a bit. This worked well in lower light (or backlit) conditions, but once in a well lit condition, it looked washed out. Also, the white balance looked way off on the iPhone.
It just generally looked "off" enough that I'm highly suspecting that the camera settings were different. For example, the grain and flower pictures looked like a fill flash was used on the N6, but not with the iPhone.

It's you..... the new iphone 6 is the highest rated ever on a camera phone by dxomark. The sensor on the Nexus is still the crappy old 1/3" sensor. The iphone 6 has a 1/2.66 sensor. You can still get a good image on the nexus, but it's not the same. MP = nothing really ( since most camera phones are over 10mp anyway ). Sensor size and f stop mean everything... ( along with good software to run it all ).
Without some sort of reference, those images mean nothing really in the video. For instance the nexus images looked washed out. However, without being there to see the true colors, Its impossible to tell.
I hate iphones, but you have to give apple this one.

The iPhone 6 still uses a 1/3 sensor if I'm not mistaken.
what did dxomark say about the nexus 6? i cant find anything about it.
i am just saying when the video first came up i thought to myself "that must be the iphone on the left" because to me the video on the left looked far superior.then the labels came up and the nexus was on the left. i was shocked.i know we all have personal preferences, i thought and still think, the nexus outperformed the apple product in these examples.
i am just happy that google took the camera seriously this time around.
maybe apple has a better camera ...i dont know ,but in this video i would have picked the nexus to be superior.
thanks
This is that weird video again. There's something suspicious about it. First off, Nexus 6 doesn't have 60 fps... This isn't right...

Note 4's camera is better than that of the iPhone 6/+
I would take this video with a pinch of salt... Seems fishy to me.

Its amazing you say you hate iPhones but sound just like a isheep trying to justify your purchase of a inferior product. ..it's OK one day you can come out of the hate android closet just because it's better and doesn't have a dumb piece of fruit on it

You have to be some major sheep if you can't accept that Iphones do have their ups. Same as rkennison, I dislike Iphones and I'm a fan of android, but I don't conform to all this fanboy BS. Just because you're a fan of one, doesn't mean you have to pretend the other is absolute sh*t. Android is especially lacking on the camera software side.

Your attitude is an example of why sometimes I hate the android community. You already assumed he's a fanboy and all that because he sided with an iPhone. He is stating facts, I have used the iPhones 1st gen to the 4s and after that android till today and its clear that one feature that iPhones are very strong at is the camera. Anyways, I am just glad the Nexus 6 has a comparable camera to higher tier phones, because I've used the GN, N4 and N5 and the camera on those were just crap. Can't wait to get my hands on the N6 and will be comparing it to my bros iPhone 6 Plus for a raw comparison.

I also didnt say it was bs or sh1t or anything else but i have seen note 4 cam beat iphone and from my point of view even g3 beats it in most situations ... iphones have their place in the market for kids that want to buy and be just like their friends and go along with everyone else and peoples parents who cant really understand how to work a android ....its just simple and its not for everyone .... that is the beauty of it ..i dont have to buy it because i dont want to ...just like all these people complaining about size and price of nexus 6 ... you don't have to buy it . I have had note 2 , 3, and 4 g2 and g3 wife has a iPhone 6 for work... i look at devices and check off boxes the ones that i can check off most i will get ....i won't even look at phones under 5.5 so that always narrows it down. Then i look at specs i have had many smart phones going back to treo 600 650 750 palm pre evo galaxy s2 s3 ...its wonderful to have your pick and not have to worry what others think .....
Actually I believe Note 4 was rated higher than iphone 6+. The colors were washed out on the 6+ in that video not the other way around. The problem here is that some people don't actually know much about photography and yet they still come on here and make random statements. MP means nothing anymore, but when you're down as low as 8mp in a phone it actually does. Usually poeple blow up photos more often taken with phones and this poses more issues when it is a low resolution. Face book, instagram and many other social media sites have created a place for people to post pictures and the need for editing. This blowing up of a photo to post as your profile picture or to crop someone else out leads to pixelated photos from iphones everywhere.
Hi, I'm made comparison with S7 and Nikon D3300 DSLR Camera, both devices are set on Auto mod. The Galaxy S7 has proved to be very good in compression with DSLR.

If you have suggestion or some idea what would you want to see next write here! :highfive: :good:
Interesting comparison. I'm a photographer and shoot with a Nikon d7000. On my recent travels to Australia over the summer I found those moments when I had the camera in my backpack and I needed to take a quick snap my galaxy s7 was more than capable and has produced some excellent images for me so I'd agree with what you are saying in terms of a point and shoot the gs7 really comes up trumps
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Good comparison video, I'd say in some shots the S7 looked better, the main places the NIKON won were zooming in on the images, the higher resolution really shows up there, but overall considering this is a phone vs a DSLR, it does pretty damn well
Thanks , Yeah S7 camera is very good. But DSLR have more settings in manual mode

Would be interested to see some manual mode comparisons too
Take the best quality shot possible with Nikon vs S7 in manual mode using all features each device has to offer, day and low light/night
dslr has also different lens dimension, no phone can be compared with such a camera

wait for Canon fans, buddy
Looks you're using stock 18-55 lens, right? those ones are very dim. on my old D5100 I'm suing 18-70 and it's a whole world of difference. You know what? Should I make the same shoot-out with D5100 and S7 and send you the pics? PM me if interested.
But in general - I was really impressed with s7 pics quality. Hands down, the very best I ever saw from the phone and well suppressed my expectations.

Yea do the comparison, it'll be interesting to see, no need for PM just post them here
S7 is very impressive camera wise, obviously it's never going to beat a DSLR but the fact that people are making comparison videos says a lot about it's quality

BTW, should that to be a video like you did or just a set of pics?
