So many negative threads about how the screen sucks, the camera sucks etc etc. Would be nice to hear from the people who actually like the Z1. Write down your experience with the phone. It doesn't have to be all rosy but hopefully it will give a little bit more nuance.
Sure.
Last Saturday I got my Z1, I've had a Gnex for a long time and my first impressions are very good. The device is amazingly fast, everything works as it should, multitasking is very good, all performance related things are nothing to complain about.
The screen 'dead-on' is also nice the viewing angles people are talking about is something I don't really see as a problem. I just held the phone in an angle and when the colours start to wash out it's an angle I would never use my phone at. Other than that the camera does have noise issues, although it's not too bad IMHO. (do bear in mind I come from the Gnex so pretty much every new device is a big upgrade) I don't think the noise issues aren't too bad though, as Sony can easily fix the noise issues with a software update. Speaking of updates, the Z1 already had 3 updates. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is up to you, but to me it sounds like it's well supported by Sony.
Battery... I feel mixed about it. It's better than my Gnex, but again, pretty much every device is. I did expect a lot more from a 3000 mAh battery though. I had about 23 hours of standby and roughly 4 hours of screen on time. That is with 3G on all the time, wifi on most of the time and applications like Twitter, Whatsapp and Facebook running in the background. It's a weird thing though, the xperia ZR gets 11:30 (11 hours and 30 minutes) of browsing in the GSMarena test. While the Z1 gets about half of that. I have the feeling Sony has to do some software optimization, since they can pull it off. (note: the ZR battery is 2300 mAh) How long this will take, and if Sony will even do it, I have no idea. If the problem is related to Qualcomm it may take a long time though since they're not very keen on doing things in a different way. (look at the Nexus 7 2013 and binaries)
Overall I personally think the Xperia Z1 is an amazing device. It's super fast, the build quality is amazing and it feels really good.(get a case though!) There are things to improve on such as battery life and it depends on whether you trust Sony to fix these issues or not.

Got mine yesterday.
S/W: problems yet
Performance: Extremely quick 9/10
Screen Quality: 8/10 but too early to say if I'm just being jaded by all the moaning.
Camera seems pretty good to me, what a blessing a proper camera button makes.
Shame I can't upload samples of photos / videos etc. I will find a way if request. Anyone wanna buy a Galaxy 3? ho ho..
Oh one thing I don't like, is having to uncover the charger port to charge it up (i know its re waterproofing).
My options are :-
Cut the cover flap off or buy a magnetic charger unit £30.00 !!!!! (I probably will.)
So far pretty dam good phone.
Paul
I've had my XZ1 since Saturday 21st sept, and so far I love it, the camera is good but has issues like the grain and noise which prevent it from being a great one.
Love the sharpness and colours of the screen and it's resolution makes browsing the Web or forums so easy.
I've gotten used to the waterproof tabs after having my Xtz before I got the z1 but at least if you don't like having to keep opening the flap you can use a magnetic charger cable or dock.
That's all I can think of at lol

screen is best... best contrast and color you can get... no yellow tint or extra blue. no issue at all..
screen performance not so good from an angle... but who use it like that... 98% i use head on... 2 % ready to sacrifice. for head on awesomeness..
battery is a ****. (Wifi and bluetooth on, may be due to this)
Auto mode of camera is a ****..
play around with ISO in manual mode to get best shot for each scenario...
sound from speaker is not so good... even headphone sound (wired) is not good...
performance... nothing can beat it... samsung s4 struggles before this beast..
i am still on 518 firmware and no software issue so far.. using wireless headphones...

For me it's this above plus
Weird touch screen issues where it goes a bit bonkers when doing the pattern unlock.
Wow a positive thread about the Z1, do my eyes deceive me?
Seriously it's nice to see positive in all the threads of doom and gloom.
Nice

My showers have become a lot less of a chore and more of a pleasure;
https://vine.co/v/hvY5MVFTLXd?fb_action_ids=10151847100714799
Just add 2 hooks with a little bit of sugru
So I got mine yesterday.
Hardware: I can't tell you how gorgeous this phone is if you haven't seen it yet, the blend of pure vanilla white with the aluminium frame is a spot on direct hit in my eyes. Under the hood HW is even better. The S800 chip seriously flies and it's been a long time but Android is now becoming just as fluid as iOS and WP and it's great to see that.
Software: I am a big fan of the Sony UI simply because it's easy and it looks pretty vanilla, I haven't installed a Homescreen in 2 years now ever since I got a Xperia S and I am not changing that now. There is some minor SW bugs where some dialouges just doesn't show up but I can still press them(if I know their real position)
Camera: The camera is a serious SW mess because I know and I see that Sony has a good camera HW-wise BUT their SW and esspecially Auto mode is seriously one complete mess. Other than the major problems with the noise the camera app is fluid and it's quite promosing to have some nice options like AR and the Livestream mode.
Sound: THe loudspeaker is decent and nothing you would cheer about but it's better than my old XS of course. The headphone jack for me is perfect and I hear absolutely no difference when playing the same song on my XS or my Z1
Screen: THe screen for me is supersharp, I can only see a little difference in sharpness between my XS and Z1 but that is expected but still it's a nice feature. The colours are almost accurate(I had to increase my blue level by +3 to +4), viewing angles aren't the best but they are clearly better than my XS besides head on is the way to go in my world.
Battery: Battery is a mixed bag; Standby is EXCELLENT hours can go and the phone is still on the same percentage. However and this is a big one the battery during Web browsing or other minor things is seriously underperforming. Clearly this is also something wrong with the SW because other Sony phones does not have the same problem.
I hope this gives a good view on the phone, clearly Sony needs to fix the battery and the Camera and for some swap out faulty screens. Other than that my money was well put!
I got my XZ1 on monday and I love it so far! Yeah the viewing angles aren't the best but who is gonna use their phone from those angles? The camera is good, yes it needs some improvements but it isn't unusable.
The waterproof tabs take some getting used to after coming from a Nexus 4 but my battery lasts me about a day and a half almost 2; so I don't have to undo the tab to often.
I like the speaker, it isn't as loud as the one on the Note 2 I had but it is WAY better than the Nexus 4. I really like the notification LED also, its in a really discrete location and its pretty visible; and paired with light manager it is really useful for me.
Wifi has also been good for me, at least compared to my old N4. The overall speed of the phone is awesome! This thing rips!
Coming from the Nexus 4 this was a SOLID upgrade for me. SD card slot, better camera, Snapdragon 800, better speakers (ear piece also), and its waterproof? I can't really complain on my end!
I think people are just being a little too picky. I mean come on the phone has only been out for almost a week now. What else can you expect? Sony has been releasing updates pretty frequently so hopefully everything will get better soon.
So i will do that short: Sony Xperia Z1 is just good. Not perfect. but good and defently better as my old Xperia S. (Whiches i aso not so bad if i compare to to other cellphone from this timewindow)
Mine is good so far, only got it for 2days will test camera etc some more
One thing I can say about the screen:
I went to local store and compared to ZU screen, both on full brightness and my Z1 screen definitely has better colors and details then Z1. I tried the Sony sample pics and compared those.
Better details is due to 5" vs 6.4" I guess. But colors are really better on Z1, also in video I noticed the same result

Love the z1
Got the Z1 on pre-order, arrived the 17th.
- First thing i notice, phone is not bulky (in oposition to what reviewers say). Second thing, sony actually provides screen protect (Awsome)
- Phone turns on great and continues to perform great, Loving 4g and the speed and smoothness of the whole system.
- Screen contrast is not superb, lost in comparison to the s4, but during video streaming/playback, it performed amazingly as being hit directly by sunlight it was still very clear.
- Overall The phone is amazing, everyone says constantly i can't stop playing around with it (so true).
The only negative i have is battery life. Due to my constant use it drains very very quickly. But i think i'll be able to fix that.

I see you're from the Netherlands. Could you confirm we are still on 14.1.G.1.518 firmware? It seems everyone who has been able to upgrade to 534 firmware has far better camera results, yet I cannot update to this new firmware, still stuck on the old one. I'd love to update the firmware to get better camera results but I do not want to root this phone. I'm on Vodafone RED 4G btw, dunno if it mathers.. Thanks.

I am. I can confirm I didn't get any updates on my unlocked Z1. I updated to 534 manually via flashtool though. (doesn't void warranty) I have no idea why we don't get the updates pushed to our phones.
thought i'd give my 2 cents here as i have been seeing a lot of negative comments, especially from people who judge way too quickly. Back when the Z came out i followed it madly and already had it on pre-order but i ended up getting a htc one. Ive had this phone for 2 days now and compared to my htc one it is a definite improvement. The only thing im getting used to is the size of the phone, i have small hands so you can imagine its not a 1 handed affair, but you cant fault the build quality, i love the fact that sony puts its own screen and back panel protector on (remember the x10). Call quality is amazing i have to say, loud and clear. performance is amazing, i can see the improvements in the chipset s800 has over s600 (was in my htc one), in real life you wont notice it too much but its defo there, games run amazing no lags and hits a very good fps (wild blood, real racing 3 in particular looks and plays amazingly). I've not really played with the camera much but its better than my htc one, that was the only thing i was disappointed with that phone. Now i have been constantly messing about with the phone so cant really give an accurate example of battery life, but what are you supposed to expect from a phone specc'd like this, yes it has a bigger capacity battery, it also has a big screen and a powerful cpu too, if i get a full days use out of it il be happy.
The Z1 is easily the best phone ever built. Its so nice to hold and use. Definitely my favourite phone to date and I have owned nearly all the previous flagship phones from most companies.
Absolutely blown away by this phone it's just amazing for me.

Hi,
I'm totally new to android and the Z1 is my first personal android phone. My expectations where so high coming from many years of All iPhones.
I don't want to start a flame but yes I think android is a little behind (in some aspects) to ios7 BUT this device is actually freaking awesome and looks to me the only one that can beat the iPhone quality.
- High quality. When you touch it you feel that your money are well spent.
- The camera (if we consider is a phone) Is just super good.
- The Sony rom doesn't make me sad as and in a hurry to grab a random 3th party rom
- Display is super good colors looks real and rich. Yes view angles are not awesome but only crazy people use the phone in that way. One thing that NO ONE MENTION is that any phone is close to the iPhone under the sun. Surprise surprise according to phone arena the Z1 is in 2 place. That's for me means A LOT more than insane view angles. The only difect so far is the black. The display show (only in some circumstances) one of the lightest black on the market. You'll may notice it watching a movie (a dark one) in a dark room.
- screen protector: isn't so fragile as many said but yes isn't olephobic
Am I satisfied? A lot!!!!

So after 6 months with the Z1 I left it for and S5. Well actually my girlfriend dropped her nexus 5 in the sink and it didn't make. After playing with all the new phones I settled on the the S5. So far I do really like it but I still hate touchwiz as much as I did on my Note 2. This time they really screwed up the settings menu and it's just so hard to look at.
The things I like about the S5
screen is much nicer
fits better in my hand and is more comfortable to hold
heart rate monitor lol joking useless to me
I like having my menu buttons built into the phone so there is less space used on the screen although 4.4 help sony in this regard
removable battery
wireless charging
I have an unlockable bootloader ( my fault for buying the Z1 from a carrier)
Thing I miss from the Z!
Metal and glass construction
I found the camera to be slightly better than the S5
Camera button
walkman app ( I really liked that app)
Sony's skin is much less intrusive
Performance comparison
To tell you the truth despite the S5 having a newer processor I found the Z1 to have a little less hiccups and I'm sure touchwiz is to blame here.
My recommendation for switching if your thinking about it. Unless you really find the Z1's screen that bad I would stick with the Z1. I am happy with my S5 and overall I do like a little more than my Z1 but really its new so I'm not sure if I'm still in the honeymoon phase.
Any questions feel free to ask
Glad you found a phone you can like more,,
And from my experience playing around with my cousin's S5, i found all the same things you dont like from S5...
Freaking weird setting menu, slightly worse camera (faster focus, yes -- slightly, but stuttering UI and slower shutter), UI hiccups, and the 'isthisthingevenworking' heart rate monitor
I do found the screen to be really gorgeous, but to my hands, both Z1 and S5 are comfy in my grip.. Probably because i have big hands
I also tried to remove the back cover and sure it reminds me of Xperia ZR, but with thinner and smaller rubber shields which worries me

Bleh s5 should probably get play edition as soon as they figure out how to implement the heart rate monitor or the fingerprint scan, because look at the z ultra play edition, it has x reality in the settings lol

Honestly I could care less about either one of those features my GF is a nurse I'll get her to check my pulse lol, the fingerprint scanner has been flaky in my experience doesn't work good one handed which is useless to me. Only thing is the S5 has a knox on it and a counter so you trip it in you flash custom recovery rumor has it that voids your warranty but on the upside there will be a way more active development community for the S5.

But interesting that the s5 should have more devolpment

Ya I'm not sure about american carriers but I think only Verizon locks the bootloader not sure though, either way it seems like it is getting harder and harder to flash roms and do what you like with these new phones. I really wanted the oppo find 7 but it was on back order and needed a phone

All my friends have Samsung and they have alot more Problems then i have with Lags, UI Hiccups and more. For me Sony is the best, i had iPhone, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and alot of Phones but since my X10 i only had Sony becouse i hate the Samsung UI and i like Sonys UI alot more then AOSP. The good thing about Sony is the Quality of the Production and the simple but nice UI, good Camera and for me the Sony Phones look alot better then Samsung. I dropped my Xperia P alot and even once when it fall down the Stairs i thought it was completly broke becouse it was more then 2 meters but had not even damaged Display, 3 of my Friends dropped their S4 from not even 1 meter and Display is broke. Another reason is i dont like Mainstream Phones that everyone has like Samsung or iPhone haha

Samsung's UI is very ugly Nova launcher helps a bit but it is heavy and is the main cause of lag for sure. As for build quality my Xperia ZL broke after a month (mic died) then replacement lasted 2 month before the usb port broke. My xperia Z after two months of use the back glue came undone from the heat the phone produced. My Z1 has been great no complaints. They all have issues but I had less problem with my samsung devices then I did Sony just my experience. No doubt the Sony looks nicer though, and I agree I first went from samsung to sony because I wanted something everyone didn't have.
Thanks for sharing your exp. with us mate.
To be honest i cant find more attractive than Z1 for now , performance wise i am happy with it and i am loving the camera specially with i hackers mod , one question how is the build quality generally ? because i owned Note2 and the build quality was terrible.

The quality is the best Samsung has put together, everything feel tight ans I do like the textured back, but the Sony has more heft and I wish Samsung would have at least make the frame aluminum.
I the S4 and a tab 3 10.1, a combo that put me off Samsung for good
So i dont have a good opinion about the S5

Samsung seems to be focusing on to many gimmicks rather than improving what people want most. I have yet to try a samsung tablet that I like. I work in I.T and we have never had great success with samsung tablets. As an android fan it hurt me to suggest Ipads for my company but they just worked better for what we needed. I have a Nexus 7 that I do really like. We do have a BYOD program at work and samsung's don't cause much problem but neither do most newer androids, but the fragmentation due to slow updates does cause us some headaches. Blackberries have been the worst since BB10 though.
best phone they did was the SG2 game changer.
Sticking to my z1 should last a few years and still be a good phone.

that and the note 1 I had the galaxy s then s2 and then note 1, I wish they would pool together their resources and start making some deadly exynos chips again
Before owning a Z1 I had a Xperia X10 Mini Pro and a Galaxy S4. When I decided to upgrade my old X10 Mini Pro I started to search for the best device available in the moment, I had 3 options back then, which were Xperia Z, HTC One and Galaxy S4. After reading a lot, I decided to change from Sony to other device, and many people started to pressure me to get S4 because it was Samsung. In the end I got the S4, which was an amazing device indeed, very powerful and had an amazing screen.
Back in January, my S4 broke (apparently bootloader problem ) and Samsung refused to fix it (I never asked to do the repair free of charge, actually I said I'd pay, but they still didn't want to fix it)! So, I'm staying away from Samsung after this. And when you have such a powerful device you don't want to downgrade anymore, so I started to search for a great device that would be good for me. I was between Nexus 5 and Z1, personally I'm not a big fan of LG, and the point that I already had a 32GB Sdcard from my S4 made me go for Sony again, if I have to change a device it'll surely be Sony again lol.
Now to the true comparison between S4 and Z1 (I never used a S5 before, so I decided to share what's the experience of changing from Samsung to Sony). When it comes to processing power, Z1 simply destroys S4, true, it's not fair comparing a Snapdragon 800 to a 600, but not only the processor is faster, but the OS in Z1 was optimized, so it gives you a better experience, not only Xperia UI is faster, but is way better looking that Touchwiz, which looks too colorful and somewhat "childish" to me (just my personal opinion). It takes me to another point in UI, now comparing Sony, Apple and Samsung... If you look at Apple iOS 7 design, it's all colorful like Touchwiz, personally I'm not a big fan of those colorful "happy/childish" designs, sometime back if you asked me about iOS design (before 7), I'd say it is professional looking, while Touchwiz was focused more on a different aspect. Now, if you ask me the same thing, I'd say that Xperia is the one with professional looking, while the other two are fighting for a younger fanbase probably.
In terms of holding the device, I never had a problem with either, however, I feel using my Xperia with two hands more than I think I did with S4, not that it is a problem though, as most of times I'm using the cellphone with only one hand, but, being a person with 190cm I have very big hands, which probably helps in this. The thing is that Xperia feels more premium due to the glass back, it's also more comfortable to hold feeling it like this.
And talking about the exterior characteristics of the device, there's one thing that's really funny that happens. When I owned a S4, people would look at it and ask: "Is it a S4?", and only after I answered "yes", they'd say "OMG! That's so GREAT!!". Now with Z1, they don't even know the device, they look and say "OMG! It looks amazing!! What device is it?", I never thought the device aesthetics would do much, now I know how it changes the way others will look at your cellphone.
Another thing that I need to say is about the camera and screen. I'm not a professional photographer, actually I took just a few, so the amazing Z1 camera is just a bonus for me, but I think Xperia's camera beat easily Galaxy's camera, specially having a physical button! When changing from X10 Mini Pro to S4 I actually felt a little harder to took more focused pictures without a button . And the screen is hard to compare, both have an amazing screen, but I will give the point for S4 on this one, the viewing angles were way better, however you have a display over saturated in Galaxy, which can be a little annoying, that's why I loved Sony's display .
Also, like said by someone before me, I think Samsung has many useless apps, while Z1 had apps that I actually used or if I didn't use there were just a few anyway. At least, but not last, I like the exclusivity of being a Sony user, as everyone either has an iPhone or a Samsung .
Glad to know that OP liked his new acquisition . Personally Samsung is a no go for me anymore, hope you enjoy your device ^^.

Just to make clear I do like the S5 a lot but my main point to the thread was to give people an idea of what the next gen was like comparing it to the Z1. I agree with all your points I'm 6'4 so my hands are big and neither devices is that easy to use one handed. Although I do like how samsung puts the back button on the right. Despite sony having some odd hicups with software there skin is way better and way nicer to look at.
The main reason I made this thread was for people to ask some questions and mostly to tell people not get envious of the new phones. My gf has my Z1 now and I still miss it. Performance in benchmarks are better on the S5 but as the saying goes that means nothing. I turned off all the animation on my S5 so the UI would be more fluid and that says a lot about Samsungs UI. Basically the only things that really makes me feel like I improved on is the screen. I am photographer and both cameras are good for the small sensor size but the sony camera app is way better. I use mostly pentax K3 and K2IIs for most my shooting and just bough the Sony A7r and I can tell sony has been really pushing advancement in the full frame camera world. I too like you switched to sony because everyone had a samsung and I wanted something different, If the Z2 was availible here to buy I would have gotten that one

Hi,
I get what your thread was, sorry if I went off topic . I saw some people sharing their experiences with other Samsung devices and I felt inspired myself hehe. I didn't intend to rant at Samsung, S5 or anyone, just a personal opinion .
For Sony camera app I completely know what you mean! When I installed a custom ROM on my X10 Mini Pro I really felt the lack of the camera app hahaha! And now Z1 is great for me, reminds me of a Cybershot camera (you know, those small ones).
By the way, I ended up forgetting to ask a question . I saw some pics of S5 and it looked a little bulky, do you feel the difference in it? Also much do you think they've improved from the older devices build? Because personally I didn't like build quality of S4, specially after some time the back started to get scratched, but I did like how the bezels were small, which I think they didn't do in S5...

I'm really Disappointed with Z3+ and I believe the Z3 is better because of the following reasons :
1- Z3 screen brightness is markedly stronger (you have to turn off the auto brightness in both of them ).. Even I felt the Z3 Screen is clearer!!
2- The frontal speakers in Z3 are better and louder especially in hard rock for example..
3- the battery life in Z3 is better
4- I'm disappointed with the build quality of Z3+ especially the back glass.. I felt it's even a plastic !!.. the Z3 build quality is noticeably better
5- believe or not.. I use the main camera to take a selfie especially while using 20.7 because the target will be farther in the photo frame (the camera lens is wider) ... and the secondary camera lens of Z3+ in skype or any video calling apps is not wider !! it's the same of Z3 !!.. this is very important for me in video calling apps
SONY what is going on !! please come back to the battle soon !! you are the best !!

It's better after the latest update.. I should talk about it but this is a known issue
Z3+, as the name says, was probably not meant for Z3 owners. On top of that, we all know about Sony's two flagships per year policy. At least they called it Z3+. But Z3 itself should have been called Z2 Slim (not even Z2+) lol Z3 was the most underwhelming addition to the Z series.
Coming from a Z2, I found Z3+ as a perfect upgrade. It brought all the jazz Z2 slim ( I mean Z3 ) did along with the upgrades that actually matter - 64 Bit SD810, Adreno 430, DDR4, LDAC, faster LTE Cat 9 (300mbps for now which is still > Z3's 150mbps), 5mp front cam, better rear cam sw. It was quite easy for me to take these over Z3's louder speakers & better battery life.

Did it ever came to your mind that you are somehow biased by the overall bad reviews? Do you really think you are able to judge without a bias?
Sorry I can't stand this complaining and whining about this device.
It's the same on all new devices. At first there is a big hype, then comes the reality which is behind the expectations. Same thing with the nexus 9 I own and nexus 10 I've owned. Both are great devices, but there was a great amount of people who were talking bull****.

Read what I wrote slowly and see by yourself in real life while comparing both of them as I said exactly and tell me then..
Only thing that is bull**** on this device is procesor. We must admit that Snapdragon 810 is heating. After update things with heating are better but Sony have to fix laging UI especially when phone is hot. Other than that phone is good. I don't understand why is screen on Z3+ worse than Z3 when screen on Z3 was calibrated to cold sometimes white looks gently blue. You can say what you want but Z3+ has better screen to me. Not to mention better viewing angles on Z3+.

Cold colors issue can be reduced by adding more red in white balance settings
But how to fix the lower brightness ???
Yes, you are right. Brightness can't be fixed. And Z3+ has brighter screen.

You mean Z3
I gotta throw in my thoughts on this as well.
Have had the Z2, Z3 and now the Z3+. While overheating is no longer a (big) issue after reflash in SBM or PC Companion, I kinda feel like the Z3 was snappier (lagged less), camera launched faster, apps didn't crash as often, battery lasted longer, and charged up faster. And other niggles.. (no root, for instance.. CM12.1 would be blisteringly fast on this thing).
However, I'm confident that these are issues that stem from Sony hastily putting out an unfinished .24 update/5.0.2 update.. not hardware.
Oh, and I actually liked the Z3 matte copper finish better than the more glossy they put on the Z3+.

Had to revisit this thread.
During the past week, I did a factory reset on the phone itself (no computer involved). I did this after doing a PC Companion repair phone thingie the week before.
Holy change in response time, Batman!
It's truly back to Z3 standards, and then some! I really really recommend anyone being begrudged over buying the phone to do a full wipe, first with PC Companion and then on the phone it self. Not sure wether it was the one or the other, or the combination.. but everything from battery life, to heat issues, to lagging is -gone-. Speakers might still be bad, don't know, never use them =)
Now, if we only could get a good root...

I use GPS (Waze) every morning to work. With OTA update applied it used roughly 20% on the trip to the office, and was HOT when I took it out of the car. After wipe (And rewipe) before today, it used 12% on the same trip. It still gets hot doing it, mind you, but not nearly as hot as it did!
One issue I have found is apps with access to radio (i.e. data signal) keeps it alive (As reported by battery monitoring app), even if the app is dormant. I believe this is a 5.0.2 / .24 issue though, didn't happen on the Z3 I had.

Can't say I have noticed any difference in screen brightness, though!
Z3 got warm, like my Z3+ does now.. nothing out of the ordinary there
I returned my z3+ two times now. There was a gap between screen and the frame. Poor build quality vs LG G4.

Three day battery life? I'm up for that!

I'm so used to plugging in my Droid MAXX once every 3-4 days that when I saw this review I thought, "Ok, maybe it's about time I consider a new device..." and so far the Z5C looks to have everything that I want in a smartphone these days, including a 1280x720 display. Call me "behind the times" or something but, I just don't give a damn about super high resolution displays on small handheld devices anymore. I wouldn't mind 1920x1080 either but, 1280x720 just works for me and I know for a fact it most definitely contributes to massive battery life on the Z5C - the MAXX I have uses an AMOLED panel so that helps considerably on mine as well.
I could just get a new battery for it and I'd be getting a solid 4 days of battery life like I did when I first got it almost 2 years ago now but, the Z5C is currently sitting at the top of my "That's worth buying because I could actually use it" list.
Can't wait to see more reviews and hands on testing, as well as seeing the potential for custom ROMs as time passes. Definitely a device I intend to keep an eye on.

Yeah, many people just quote everything they read, without some real evidence. It might use more energy, but just like the gains against its predecessor the changes are pretty much marginal.

I remember Sony boasting about the new display tech in the Z5's that turns the CPU off when a static image is shown on screen. Looks like it's compensated for the more power hungry SOC quite nicely!
I have the same opinion as @br0adband. I'm perfectly fine with "just" HD display, especially if it means much better battery life. Around 320 ppi is enough to get sharp images. For me the most important things in smartphone are: camera, battery life, design and pocket size. All these things Z5C have so it's perfect for me. The only thing I whish Z5C had, is metal frame, but I'm ok with plastic, because it's matte, that looks so elegant.
I also found this Spanish test:

Nice little video there, nothing really new but it's cool to see what all comes in the box. That of course is not necessarily what we here in the US might find because of the provider but if I could manage to afford it I'd most likely buy direct and get the yellow one, I have this thing about yellow and black color combinations. I kinda like the boxy quality about the Z5C, it's just different and that's fine with me.
One thing that always irked me about Xperia models is the placement of the buttons - if I didn't know better I'd think that Sony believes it lives in a world full or right-handed people 'cause the overwhelming majority of people I know that use smartphones are left-handed and they hold it in their left hand so, having the side buttons on the right side of the phone is somewhat odd - that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Yes, my Droid MAXX has the buttons right-mounted but they're up in the top half of the right side, not the lower half which is what just seems so odd.
The hardware camera button is awesome, however. So far so good, Sony, I'm liking it more and more all the time.
There is no reason not to use it left handed
Just use an other finger than the thumb...?
The device is small enough, to grap around.
I think to remember guy in a video hands-on did so.... Right hand people tend to film with right and act with left for some reasons...
While mounted in the dash holder (car) or resting on the table people naturly use other fingers than the right hand thumb to unlock....

Kinda messed up when they consider a 1280x720 display a negative in today's world, it really is. Nobody NEEDS more than that, I truly believe that's a nearly perfect resolution for most any purpose but that's just my opinion I guess. Super-duper high resolution screens, pretty much pointless in the palm of our hands.
On a wall as a high definition display, or a desk as a high resolution computer monitor, sure, that makes a lot more sense but, extreme resolution in a handheld device, I'll never understand that one.

Yeah, 720p is the perfect resolution for this phone.
I'd consider it as a "PRO", something like:
"Has the optimal resolution for its screen size".
Some reviewers say this is a "contra". But this resolution saves a lot of battery power in all sense:
CPU power / GPU power / Screen's Power / Baseband/modem Power (lower DPI phones requires less internet bandwidth) (And lower resolution too, YouTube needs 720 instead of 1080).

I already made this thread in the Z5C section and heard the reviews from there, now I'm willing to listen to the users of the XC.
I'm a user of a Z3C (had a Z1C before that). Now that Nougat isn't available anymore for our phone, I was wondering if I should buy a Z5C or a XC.
I'm not a stock user. I use a lot of mods and custom stuff on my phone. Stock isn't for me. I know that Z5C is more powerful and more affordable that a XC, but it only has one more year of support.
Would you recommend upgrading (at all)? And if yes, which of the models
I was thinking about waiting for the new Nexus phone...but damn, that price! Also took into consideration a Nexus 5X or a Samsung S7...I don't want a big phone, nor to sell my kidneys for a phone.
I upgraded from the z5 compact to the X Compact and I have to say I have no regret whatsoever.
The x compact is like a dream phone for me it just fits in your hand like a glove. You won't find a more comfortable in hand feel ever.
Performance is also snappy and Battery life slightly better, camera and display. Everything is just a bit better than the z5 compact.
I was a bit skeptical at first upgrading because the reviews on every big website aren't great for this phone but screw all of em they really have no idea what they are on about.
I follow damir francs reviews on YouTube he's really picky but spot on everytime.
I'm telling you right now this phone is amazing you will not be disappointed at all go get it!

I recently reinstalled the stock firmware on my phone, which made me realize how much I use that would likely require root on the latest versions of Android. In comparison to something like the Pixel, the limited interest is one of the reasons I'm reconsidering buying the X Compact. I haven't followed the Z5 Compact for some time, but I'd guess there are probably more developers using that phone.

Personally I'm only going to buy from a major US retailer for easy returns, so the two phones are currently about the same price for me. I watched the Z5 Compact prices after it came out, but realistically I would have already bought it if I was going to. The following video makes the X Compact look faster than the Z5 Compact for the sorts of things I would do most often.

Would you recommend upgrading (at all)? And if yes, which of the models

I can't say if upgrading makes sense for someone else, but I'm probably going to replace my Razr M before the end of the month. The X Compact would be my choice of the two, mainly due to the newer processor.
I was thinking about waiting for the new Nexus phone...but damn, that price! Also took into consideration a Nexus 5X or a Samsung S7...I don't want a big phone, nor to sell my kidneys for a phone.

I'd prefer a multi-network phone (CDMA compatible), so the Pixel and Nexus 5X are the other phones I'm primarily considering. In comparison to the Sony it's not necessary to mess with the DRM for bootloader unlocks, and they have a lot of people using them. If I can get over the larger size, it's probably smarter for me to go in that direction, because I want updated stock Android with root. If I could get an S7 for cheap on Black Friday, I might consider one, because I greatly prefer the S7 hardware over the Pixel, but generally it's too locked down for what I really want in a phone. Since I'm coming from a Motorola that had an easy to unlock bootloader and a fair number of people using the phone, the Pixel is probably most in line with what I'm used to for software, but it's considerably larger than something like the X Compact.
I too upgraded from z5c to xc and was very surprised by this phone, it is absolutely amazing.
although I too must admit I was a little skeptical because of dumb reviews that only look at no of cpu cores, synthetic benchmarks and fails to research deeper and take in considerations like the never efficient cpu core's (A72) and next gen gpu that might also look weaker in benchmarks, does not seem so at all in real life, contrary it seems to offer the same (+Vulcan) at much lower battery use. this might be cause the design of the soc is better than the previous series and the first 64bit cortex (A57) is notorious for overheating and throttling back which also hurts the gpu. what do I know? I know I love the z5c but the xc does excel in every perspective speed, screen, insane battery life. etc.

Agree. I'll say it again.. The smoothness and speed of the phone is superior to all previous zcompact models. Not sure what Sony did but it seems very well optimized.

What do you think of the battery? If you had the z5c, how is it compared to that based on your experience?

I never really check screen on times and all but honestly it's at LEAST on par with the z5c. I think the battery is more on par with the z3c as I thought that phone was better than its successor. I'm a VERY heavy user and have about 20 percent when I lay down to bed.

Wow, the XC's battery on par of the Z3C? I had the Z3C and loved it because of the battery. Thanks for the feedback!
The only pro's i see in the Z5c over the Xc is ability to root without losing TA, micro usb (C is too new, my otg flash drives dont work), and the lanyard hole. I'd almost rather go back to the Z3c with its magnetic charging port, that was such a great feature.
A couple of observations: 1) XC fingerprint scanner is MUCH faster and more accurate for me than Z5C fingerprint scanner. 2) plastic sides of XC are more grippy than Z5C.
I prefer XC over Z5c so far.

So I found someone who's selling the XC and Z5C around the same price. Can I know some opinions now that some time has passed since you got the device? Is it worth upgrading from the Z3C? Thanks!
Z3c doesn't get updates anymore, so probably yes very soon, if not now.
Also for that reason, I prefer the newer device. Also, the fingerprint sensor on xc really is very good.
I upgraded from the Z3C to XC. Not sure how it compared to the Z5C, but it's quite a nice device. The XC is a tad bigger than the Z3C was in the hand, but still easy to be used one-handed for the most part. It's much faster and instantly responds to input. It also has similar battery life to the Z3C on Marshmallow (nothing will be able to match what Stamina did back in KitKat and Lollipop). I updated the XC to Nougat as soon as I bought it, so I can't say how it behaved on Marshmallow compared to the Z3C. It also comes at the right time for me to upgrade since the seal around the USB port cover was finally pulling off on my Z3C. Not having to mess with that anymore is a bonus.
However not everything is perfect. Bluetooth connectivity appears worse than it did on my Z3C. I don't know if this was the case in Marshmallow as well, but it's constantly disconnecting from my car while right next to the radio and my Z3C maintained a much stronger connection. I also lost the ability to use an app for streaming my screen to my car over USB and am not sure why. I've gotten around that by installing an Android Auto hack on the head unit that tends to work better overall, so it's not a total loss. USB-C also required all new USB cables, although this isn't as big an issue.
So it's a bit of a mixed bag. It's positive for the most part and if the bluetooth issues get resolved then I will be much happier.
people who have been using XC for a while (longer than 6 months or so): is there any signs of the structural deficiencies that plagued Z3C such as the screen detaching from the front (or back)? i'd appreciate any input on this.

Phone was released just over 3 months ago (end of September I think) so to soon to tell. I upgraded from my old Z1 Compact and haven't had any issues with the XC yet. Granted I have only had my XC for 2 1/2 months. That said I do work outdoors so my phones go through more abuse than what most people put theirs through. So far so good, time will tell.
What about XC vs Z5C camera?? I am undecided to buy... Please help.

That depends on whether you want to take 4K video or not. If the answer is "yes", then the Z5C is your only option. If you don't care about that, then you might want to consider the XC. I'm not a huge shutterbug, so I can't tell you how much better it is. It does seem to be faster than it was on my old Z3C and has a larger sensor (although it should be the same sensor for the Z5C). The video recorder also features that multi-sensor stabilization which is pretty cool. I just wish it also worked for still images. Still, it is an overall improvement if the lack of 4K doesn't bother you.

Ok... I really appreciate your points of view, the 4K recording it doesn't matter to me, I'm just look after the best photos, I mean, color, resolution, withouth foggy efect or dragged photo :/ . I think XC is my final option!
Thanks!! :good:
I have used both since release and while I keep our z5c phones around (I collect Xperia phones) I have not gone back at all after being on X compact, which in my opinion is so perfect from user experience to in-hand feel , speed, and fluidity... with a greatly improved camera over its predecessors, that I actually end up using it far more than the larger Xz phones.
yeah I believe you because some days back I found someone that was willing to exchange his XZ with my XC without any money changed (because here XC is rare to find but not xz) and I didnt do it! as far as Im concerned X compact has the same 3 GBs of ram and the same speed and user experience and a much better screen size to be used in one hand
