TW vs Cyanogenmod - Note Edge General

Hi Guys,
I spent the weekend playing around and rooting my note edge, I ended up trying 3 ROMS that are available as well as Micky837s Cyanogenmod 12.0 ROM.
IMO,the base Cyanogenmod ROM is totally awesome, ok you lose the 'edge' (but the screen spills over), but this is compensated by the ability to use the base OS + xposed with mods which
really makes a huge difference, also the speed seems to be muuuch better than with the bloated TW.. the TW ROM is <300mb vs >3gb for the 5.01 TW Stock Rom or 1.5 - 1.7 for the tweaked TW based ROMS.
Anyone else have any experiences with the different ROMS?

Sounds tempting. How much does the screen spill over? Maybe show a screen shot or picture with keyboard. Thanks!

CyanogenMod pic
Here's a screen cap from my trebuchet launcher with some xposed mods..
Also a screen cap of the keyboard.. The numbers agent at the top but you can flip
Keyboard to PC of you want that.. It also adds extra characters so I don't like it
Overall I think with xposed it's awesome but some modules don't work like xhalo
And also deep sleep caused sustained CPU for me...
Thanks to Micky387 all the way for porting this....

I like the wider look. As I recall the Note 1 was wider than Note 2 through 4. Always preferred the original aspect ratio.

Loosing the edge degrades my note edge ... I could have bought a note4 instead, IMHO.
So no Rom without edge support for me

Don't Disagree, but to be honest Samsung have screwed Edge users with no official lollipop updates for most, forcing us down another road.
Check the 5.1.1 CM12.1 rom , this is blazing fast!

[Q] [q] cm10.1 galaxy s4 i9500?

Does anybody know if CM10.1 is coming to the GS4 i9500 (the octa core version)?
So far no one wants to deal with the Exynos 5 version isn't been lacking resources for ages now and samsung drove them off by keeping documents in private.
lets see perhaps another developer gets an intrest in the I9500 model and tries building a CM rom based on it....
some devs are doing great stuff with the stock ROM and they keep the device alive, so we will keep being petiance.

CM will be pretty useless on the S4 though. Even If it were made available, the drivers for the S4#s sensors are closed-source, so you would be cutting functionality by 40%. No IR blaster is a no go. Also, CM interface is outdated. Im all honesty TouchWizz has caught up with CM (Notification bar toggles, quickly scalable auto-brightness), so a slim TouchWizz will just be more functional. Just change the launcher and theme and you have a CM experience.
CM nostalgia is fine but not at the expense of functionality (at least for me).

I totally agree with you, for all i know we all bought this device not for its 8 core proccessor, but its fantastic features such as: MultiWindow, IR Blaster, Air Gestures, Unique sensors... and a pretty good CAM. if someone wanted this just to install CM will bad news he should have got a nexus.
who cares TW is fantastic some guys are *****ing about it will we have the gret Themers around they did some nice things lately though i think stock look is awesome lovely colors and eye relaxing its the reason they choose them and even if the brightness is a little down you are still able to see the button... after all GS4 had a great awaitting some were disappointed cause they wished and expected too much and others are flying around with it and loving each moment. iam on the second group after comming for the Note 1 i can say its the perfect replacment for me, good battery, a real great screen (not only HD but the size is like the best you can wish for a device this size), and features will you name it anything that samsung had in the past or thought for the future is installed a handy device and i believe lacks nothing we used to say Samsung releases devices with outdated Android version will 4.2.2 is the latest and smooooooth i can say for sure

I just changed to Trebuchet Launcher (because I love the zoom transition and it has more space for apps) and Chronus Clock (as a replacement for TW weather+clock) and I am really happy about it now.
I even put the AOSP browser, which is a bit faster (and brighter) than the Stock Browser (AOSP Browser installer from Google Play).
I also put EX Dialer for Phone and Contacts. And that's the best experience currently available.
The main case for CM10.1 is to have a pure Android experience that is "compatible", but in all honesty, I have no compatibility issues with TW. I use the slim version of it, so it is not bloated anymore. The only compelling reason would be extreme performance boost and fluidity, but I won't sacrifice the remote control and other functionality for it!
If Samsung does not release open source drivers with the Google edition, then we won't see CM10.1 evolve toward decent functionality I am afraid.

is it worth buying a nexus 4 now

Hi all,
1st post in this forum, I have a samsung s3 and am forever flashing custom roms, have a chance of getting
a nexus 4 cheap-ish and will have to get rid of my s3 to pay for it. But have a couple of questions.
1 - Will i notice a big difference in speed, battery use and camera?
2. Is it easy to root and install custom roms?
I quite often flash cm/aosp roms on my s3, and although they have come a long way, still have the odd problem because of
samsung closed sources, have flashed ported kitkat 4.4 roms and they are a big improvement but still???
At the moment running Liquidsmooth aosp and its then best ive tried but still get the odd stutter on my 1gb ram based S3.
So anybody got any advice should i go for it?
cheers

You can get the N5 for around 200 bucks on ebay. I'm using both(N4 and N5) and I can totally recommend the N5 for Android enthusiastics. But the N4 is fine too.
I would go for the n5 for just a bit more money.

Any TW user who has moved to AOSP and hadn't regretted since?

I don't know why I am asking this, but maybe because I can't use LP because Xposed isn't compatible with it yet, I mean for TW based ROMs that is, or something else, but I see that a lot of people are using AOSP based ROMs and even happy about it. I personally like stock Android too but for Note series they have always been a mess and either this or that never really did work fine, and I have used that Cyanogen thingy before, the experience was nothing short of awful!
So I am creating this topic, asking to the TW users only, who like TW, has any one of you moved to AOSP based ROMs and finding it good, or better than TW to put it simply? Does everything work, I mean S-Pen related features and all that?
I personally like TW interface. I'm currently using Lollipop TW and i find it really stable. I have also tried teamsek lollipop AOSP. It is stable but it lacks some samsung features like S-pen, S-cover and all those small sensor (smart screen, air view) options that TW software has. The latest version of AOSP that i have tried was teamsek 5.2 i think and it was really nice but battery life wasn't really good. But it might have changed in recent versions. So i suggest that you make nandroid backup and try AOSP and if you don't like it just restore your previous firmware.
Also there are apps on playstore that can enable some S-pen features on AOSP.
Hope i helped

I kinda qualify - I use and like Alliance ROM LP version - 7.1 currently. It is highly configurable and fast. The 'kinda' is because I normally swap to Nova Launcher as soon as a ROM is installed.
But I also use, more as time goes on, Temasek's LP CM12 build - currently 8.4 just installed. I'm liking it more and more as I use it - no Samsung bloat and the S-Pen beta from XDA does all I want with my pen and it's being upgraded pretty regularly as more features are added. I can't think of anything a stock-based ROM has that I don't have in Android 5 from Temasek.
Now if only there was a dual boot kernel around for the Note 3.

So with this ROM (Temasek) there is no problem you notice which isn't there on TW ROMs? Like poor call volume, crappy camera photo quality, the display going yellowish etc.? Basic functions, or the problems with basic functions scare me most.

You can try the one at http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448 - first post has email to join the beta program.
Also there is CM S Pen Addon from Play - requires root.

None that I have had. There was an issue with the AOSP cam I think where the video didn't work but changing the setting from 4K back to 1080 fixed that. No display issues I even seen mentioned - that was a problem with early AMOLED screens I thought...?
Only issue I have had is my custom ringtone and notify mp3's keep reverting back to default ones on reboot. Most annoying but hardly a deal-killer.
It's fast and smooth and Temasek and his crew are responsive to issues and good at their work.

What Samsung features are missing when you install CyanogenMod ROM?

What Samsung features are missing when you install CyanogenMod ROM? I noticed that all of the cool, stock lockscreen effects are missing. But what about things like:
Super fast boot time
multi-window
S Beam
Screen Mirroring
Floating Messages
S Pen
Etc
I tried CM only for couple of hours (that was quite honestly enough for me), and S Pen features were obviously missing, same for Multi Window, and most importantly for me the display profiles weren't there, I mean the ones you find under Settings- Display, Cinema is the one I use, and I won't use anything else, and CM doesn't have anything like that, they have some colour temperature altering option however, but quite honestly that was nowhere near same as Samsung's preset calibration. Another thing is, the camera photo quality won't be like stock TouchWiz camera, and then there is the call quality!
It was way too many things to compromise for me, for little speed bump.
Was in CM till the Lollipop came and yes I don't use much TW features even though I am in TW now.
but after Lollipop, TW is better in performance and battery (without Greenify or Xposed), I've freezed a few apps though..
Im using Lean Kernel and TW base gives better battery anyday!

Thanks, I think I'll stick with TouchWiz then!
Right but it's more to personal preference. Most importantly I hate the interface. TW is much better looking for me. I can live with some lags.
CM, overall it's fast but it has some lags when opening a dialer or so. And the battery life is terrible. No matter which rom i've tried on my note 1 & 3 nothing is better than TW.
If i want a stock android i will get a nexus.
Sent from my SM-N920C
Lol
For me TW is the ugliest.
Never used gimmicks so for me there is no point in TW. Haven't touched stylus in a year, I don't multi task. And there are apps that work even better than Samsung spen apps other than snote, but Microsoft note is great.
Can't compare nexus phones to others as their design and hardware isn't best compared to Sony and htc, and some Samsung phones. I like Samsungs hardware but I have cm on all my devices. I like smoothness of CM if you can sett it up the way you want. Never ever lags here.
For me SoT is up to 8 hours and I'm happy as I have no problem charging phone wherever am I.
If CM was so bad it wouldn't be so popular and used by millions.
And those that buy a Samsung device just like others buy an apple, there is no way they can accept anything else.
Those willing to try new things can try themselves and see if it is working for them or not. Everything else is bull****, as I have listened to those before and this way missed my dream OS till I tried different ones and finally found what I was looking for.
TW is best for those that can't live without it. TW is the worst for those that don't like it.
CM is best for those that like it. CM is worst for those that see no point in it.

I agree totally. Before tw lollipop, I couldn't stand tw. Now it feels just as fast as some cm roms, save for a few lightning fast ROMs like slim and validus and minimal.
I do enjoy cm/slim a lot because of all the well designed themes and built in mods/cherry picks.
On tw you need to use xposed, or an app, to achieve different tweaks. But if you cook up a ROM with those features, you're all set. Cough cough aryamod layers, mods, cough cough
I do need more battery life, so sadly I can only use tw for the time being.
But I can find touch wiz app alternatives that suffice when on cm. Although camera quality isn't as good.
I guess I'm a perfect candidate for multi boot...
Tw average sot for my usage: 6 to 7hr
Cm average sot for my usage: 4 to 5hr

I have tried few most popular roms for note 3 (even tho its TMO i was using supported ones) and i can tell you that stock lolipop gave me best experience and here is why.
My first rom ever to be flashed was darklord note 5 port by darkera13 and even though it gave me stunning battery idle time it also gave me some bad experiences using camera software which was either poor quality or simply not working when it was needed.
Next I tried s6 port by same developer assuming 5.0.2 base would be much more compatible with our official one but there were some massive memory redraws and weird display brightness bug(screen becomes dim on wakeup).
Since roms above were used as base to other port style roms I dont expect any better from them.(not saying they are bad, contrary, but when stability and reliability is in question ill prefer stock sluggy rom.
I must say that I have never used CM on note 3 so I must leave that to someone else but by the time I am writing this i am using stock and only 5.0 rom provided by TMO on top of lean kernel.(also its massively debloated ).
Cheers,hope it helps!!
AryaMod: Fully featured. Stable. Fluid too (as fluid as stock), and believe some features are really handy, like the alarm notification on lock screen which Samsung omitted from Lollipop. Just use it without Xposed, and you are good to go.

Try tazzy-aurora note 5 port with darklord kernel 1.5 & LS speed mod. Everything works fine and it's really fast with good battery life.
I flashed the s6 settings + stock ui mod (extra mods) and i'm really happy with. Also no camera flickering with darklord kernel
See my sig. Temasek ftw ^^

AryaMod IMO is by far the best Lollipop TW based experience available. I tried literally every single rom from here for 5.0 and nothing compares to Arya when it comes to stability, usage, battery... I highly recommend it!
Always back to cyanogemod CM12.1 = quick, slim, reliable. Only negative is of course the lack of s pen, but you got some third party apps for that.
Used to be great fan of miui, however they are now getting less popular by making their new MIUI 7 lollipop based, which is a sad thing.
