[Q] Hard disk connection with OTG - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a samsung galaxy tab 4 and I tried to connect via OTG an hard disk, WD my passport 2Tb, but it doens't work.
I read a lot of post in which the explanation is that the device can't give enough power to the hard disk and it could be a good explanation, but I don't understand why the hard disk works if I connect it to my galaxy note II, a smartphone!!!
How could be possible that a smartphone have enough power for the hard disk and a tablet doesn't?!?!
Do you have experience with this kind of problems?
Bye,
milus

Which galaxy tab 4 do you have? If it is a Wi-Fi only 7" then it has no otg capabilities. Have you used other things for the otg on this device that did work?

It is a 10.1", sm-535. It works with USB pens.

Is it possible to connect galaxy s1/2 via wifi and use the phone storage on tablet?

I have several questions will appreciate the users who can answer
-Is it possible to connect galaxy s1/2 to the tablet via wifi or cable and use the phone storage (incluse micro sd) on galaxy tablet?
- how much is the actual available capacity on a 16gb version? in galaxy s phone it is called 16gb but the storage we can access is around 13.43gb
I can't say for 100% that this isn't possible but I don't believe it is. Theoretically you could use swiFTP and make your phone a ftp server and use your tablet to share files. I believe the speed at which these files would transfer between the two devices would be severely hindered. You would be better off buying the USB adapter (when it comes ) and plugging in a usb drive.
thanks for your help
how about the second question? how much is the actual available storage on the tablet?
I was actually curious of this too especially since I keep seeing all these Wi-Fi drives coming out. I was wondering why they wouldn't work in that way. I did forget something though.
What about DLNA? Supposedly our tablets support the tech and so do Samsung Galaxy S IIs. Couldn't you just stream a video over to the tablet at that point?
I'm really curious about this and I'm kind of upset that DLNA isn't pushed as hard as Apple's Air Play stuff.

Connecting external hard drive?

I have a plan to possibly use my hd2 as a covert camera recording video onto an external hard drive, does anyone know if this would work? Theoretically it seems straight forward but on connecting my USB hard drive with a micro to usb otg cable the hard drive doesn't start up like it does when connected to my nexus. Is this simply because I need some software/ app that makes it recognise it or does the hardware simply not support this?

Would depend on OS running on phone and filesystem of hard drive.
With android it should be fine if you use rick's usb host kernel and the hard drive is powered externally, with the only issue being that the phone won't charge until you change to another kernel (or rom).
There is probably also a way for the video footage to be saved to the hard drive while being attached to a laptop using a file share or something similar.
At the moment I think its just on stock windows 6.5. So is this not compatible? What would be best to use, I've never really had a lot of luck with android rooms on it stability wise. Would I also be able to charge the phone from the USB cable as it would eventually just run down.

I'm no technician or anything, but wouldn't the hard drive need external power? OTG power from HD2? I don't think that would be enough for a hard drive.
You can try a powered USB hub. Or, what about a 64GB sd card?
Yeah the hard drive has got a power cable that I intended to use. You need to. Was trying make this work from what I already had, not to buy another SD card

Hello guys,
I remember a thread by Cotulla who worked on this for WM 6.5:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224652
Also the charging problem is solved but one has to do a bit of handicraft work.
Best regards

Using an External Hard Disk

Hi. I'm considering buying an external hard disk to use with my Nexus 10. I have a USB memory stick which works fine with the USB OTG cable I have, but need more capacity.
Will an external hard disk work with the Nexus 10 and a standard OTG cable, or would I need to power the hard disk for it to work? ie. Would I need to get a 'Y cable' or use another power cable for it to work? Or does it depend on the hard disk?
I've searched, but the answers I've found conflict or are vague as to whether external power is required.

USB is USB, as far as the device is concerned. If it can power the memory stick, it should be able to power the drive (as long as it is if the portable variety (I.e. the drive itself requires a power cable), although you probably could figure that part out yourself.
I haven't tried this myself, of course, but I can't foresee any problems. It should work without any problems!

good luck
I tried my otg cable with powered and non powered hard drives and it doesn't reed any data even if it recognises the drives. It's a known issue with the nexus 10. There is an app called Nexus Media Importer which should solve all problems for all nexus devices connected to external memories but i havent tried it. I suggest you to try somehow before buying.
I'm getting the impression that 'it depends'. Some say it works, some say it doesn't. It may even depend on the hardware (how much power it needs). Just hoped someone could draw on personal experience to advise rather than me having to take a leap of faith (buy one and hope for the best).

[Q] connect my note 3 to WD Live TV as thumb drive

I'm sure there is a easy answer to this and I wasnt sure where else to ask. I use a western digital media player to play all my media at home. Normally I have a my hard drive connected to it and use my PC for downloading. My PC has kinda crapped out so I've been using my Note 3 for all my downloading. I'm just wondering if there is a way for me to plug my phone into the media player as a thumb drive to playnmovies off of. I'm sure there is a easy way to do so, also is there a cable I can purchase to transfer files from my smartphone to my hardrive without a PC ? I'm currently running cm12 nighlties if that helps at all. Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this question. Thanks for any help I can get. Cheers.
You need to enable USB Mass Storage, which was removed from Android in 4.1.2.
Not sure if it can be enabled in CM; someone else might know.
As for transferring files between your phone and a drive, you need an USB OTG (On The Go) cable.

Is it possible to make tab 4 7.0 support otg?

As the title implies i was wondering whether my tab 4 7.0 support otg?
I bought an otg 3.0 usb and i couldn't open it..

My Tab 4 opens using various OTG cables and drives.
I have an OTG Cable which I use for connecting a PS3 controller and playing N64 games at my work with others.
My Meenova Dash Micro opens up with a standard Samsung File Manager pop up showing my files and connecting an sd card reader to a standard OTG cable works the same.
I would expect maybe the device itself perhaps is not compatible.
I have noticed with one in my store, the Wifi Only Version seems to be the one that has issues with OTG. The connected versions seem to be open to OTG. Personally that makes no sense but it seems to be the same with the Galaxy Tab 3 as well.
Can you specify the version of your tab 4? My tab 4 version is sm-t231
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
No, the 7.0 version of the Tab 4 does not use a Snapdragon like the rest, it uses a Marvell chipset which does not support OTG. I suggest you get one of these which works perfectly with the 7 inch Tab 4 (and unlike most other portable devices that let you access USB hard drives via wifi it does support SMB in addition to it's own app). Note that you must save the wifi password twice before turning it off or you will need to do a hard reset of the adapter (not the tablet).
