google fi invite - Nexus 6 General

So when you sign up all they ask is if you have service in your area by inputting your zip and for you email. They dont actually ask if you already have the Nexus 6. Ive been browsing around online and I see a lot of people signing up but then go on to say im not buying a Nexus 6 though. So if all these people are signing up without the Nexus 6 and then getting an invite, its just making it harder for people like me who actually own the phone and want to use the service. Google shouldve made people put their imei number from their phone in so those people would get picked for to try out the service.

You can buy a new phone at sign up.

What im saying is people who dont have a N6 are signing up and thats making it harder for people with the phone to get invited.

Google and privacy

Hello!
I´m interrested in Android as well as in the tm G1.
Now the G1 is announced here in Germany for the second of february.
My problem at the moment is, that I have read and heard, that google is collecting data (everything)! So if you read the "terms and conditions", what do you think about that or don´t you care? I mean they have the rights over everything you load/send/post/get....and more!
How do you handle that fact personally for you?
Greetings!
Carter
That's just the nature of the emphasis on cloud computing. Personally my stance is simply to not conduct any business on my G1 that I would mind Google knowing/datamining. Regardless of what companies claim in their privacy policies, the very best way to 100% guarantee your data will be misused is simply to not willingly give it out.
Edit: also keep in mind that the (potentially) datamining portions of Android generally revolve around those apps and services which are closed-source apps provided by Google that are not a part of the Android Open Source Project. These include for example the Market, GMail, GTalk, and so forth.
ok, I get your point, but what is the G1 without Gmail/Calendar etc.
And thats all google.
Because of the poor response on my question I think that the majority doesn´t care about google´s data collecting hype.
In my eyes their acting is scary....imagine the details they know about you and many many other people....
just my opinion...
Greetz!
They don't collect any personal information. Not only that but they don't have people looking at these records. A computer does all the work, and is only used to find keywords.
Look at this site's search (the one on xda not google) it works by taking every word and putting it in a database and when you search the word it shows the corresponding posts. so post1 has wordA and post2 has wordA and wordB, and when you search for wordB you only get post2. The same concept is in place for google... except it goes one step further. The spider takes out words that are not needed. Well they have been using this for your GMail for sometime as well. It is why they have excellent spam control and it is why google is so awesome. They use the same process to check emails when you click links. Basically they are just trying to find out who uses what sites for what reasons. If they figure out all this they can better help you and the company you were visiting.
Chances are if you are on a site that is doing something illegal Google already knows it exisists.
someone can always watch if they want, on a g1 or PC, or anything connected. Just don't do anything dumb.
i think its obscene and absurd how gung hoe they are with it. If you want access to the playstore gawdam they better have every member of your family and every person you've ever met profiled as well as around the clock location tracking with a serial # and every keystroke on your device. And dont you dare make any attempts to disable any of their spyware or you can kiss YouTube apps and the play store goodbye. Its pathetic what they've done to Android and its users. And the reason it pisses me of the most is because I don't even really use free apps. They're all either paid for or open.

I have a spare Google Voice Invite

I signed up for google voice months ago, and today got an invite through
Unfortinatly, its for US users only and i live in the UK.
Im willing to give this to someone here who is a active member of the forum, lives in the US and who deserves it because he/she helps people or has made great contributions to this forum ect.
So I think we should take a vote on who this goes to, and no voting for yourself. Whoever has the most votes gets it.
Too bad I'm pretty new to these forums, I would sure like one
Can I have it?
I'd be up for it.
I'm too new again to nominate anyone.
Course... I'm in the US and would love to have it :->
I'd love to have it.
If it is not tied to the email you signed up for in the waiting list, I too am willing to give out an invite.
i remember back when Gmail was invite only, i had the fortune to be one of the first and always gave invited out to everybody LOL
anyway, i would love to try this new voice service, any chance i could get an invite please??
thanks
A little tip for some of you guys. If you haven't already done so, go ahead and sign yourself up for an invite on the official google voice page.
Google is rolling out invites pretty fast right now. My brother signed up for an invite about 4 days ago and he just got his invite. He did sign up for an invite twice, don't know if that would make a difference, but trying doesn't harm anybody.
I already got mine about a month ago. Now if only we had an awesome app to work with.

Agreed this google voice thing is nice but without a app on wm its just doesn't do anything for me unfortunatly.
Still up for grabs if anyone who has a higher post count wants it.
Google voice seriously needs a Windows Mobile App.
I would like to give it a try if it's still available.
Not a mega poster or ROM developer, but try to help when I can.
Thanks!
Update: I got an invite from Google, no need to be considered. Thanks!
Google Voice is AWSOME Free Long Distance calls from home phone
i think it'd be nice to give it to someone with a high post count, contributed to the community and has at least a star next to their name. i'm not talking about myself.
nobody saw this app ?

GV Dialer
Though it costs 10$ after the 30 day trial www.gvdialer.com has a decent option.
It's the best I've used I think between OneDialer / iDialer, etc etc
It makes calling extremely easy, no doubt someone could replicate the concept and produce a similar app here.
Though we definitely need the ability to send texts.

Already saw those apps and I was concerned about privacy. Everything goes through a relay server which is not encrypted. The author of that app may have the best of intentions, but I don't take chances in this matter.
I'm not sure if my post count is high enough or how much contribution you're looking for but I had a few helpful posts in the early days of the Fuze, helped out Herg and 12aon with their interfaces and would love to have it if it's still available.
ITNV has the highest post count that was intrested in it so it has been sent to him.
I would like to try the google voice service. I do helps people in the forum and make roms for other. Hopes I can get the invite.

HD2 Services On Craigslist

Browsing through Craigslist for an HD2 I came across multiple posts of people that are offering to upgrade the HD2 to winmo 6.5.x or Android for a fee of anywhere from $30-$60 dollars. I don't think it's right for people to be making a profit from something that they did not create. I highly doubt that they are taking part of the fee that they charge and donating it to the developers for their work. I've been flagging their posts in hopes that they get removed and will post information as to how to do install Androids themselves for free. I don't know if it's appropriate to ask you to do the same in your local cities and encourage the public to donate to the developers themselves instead of paying the $30-$60 dollars to someone that has done nothing to earn them except for ripping off the work of someone else. If I was a chef and stayed up for countless hours, missed family time and what not and found out that someone was making money off my work, i'd be livid. Just wanted to make you guys aware of a situation that is unacceptable.
I don't personally feel that by offering to set someones phone up with all the bells and whistles for a fee is wrong.
If a person doesn't feel like reading up and spending time learning how to setup their phone and wants to pay someone to do it for them that is there choice.
Saying that the person setting the phone up for them isn't right because they are collecting a fee to set up "open source" and freely distributed software onto there phone to save someone who is busy and doesn't have the time to spend hours reading on this forum to accomplish this is just silly.
Yeah all us phone junkies who don't have anything else better to do then sit on XDA and read and learn about our (hobby) for hours on end may seem normal to you and I but a HUGE portion of people do not have the time or wish to waste time on this when they can pay someone to have a tricked out phone to show off at the office.
And beyond that..the economy is in the toilet. People are trying to make a buck any possible way they can to feed themselves.
I have been buying HD2's when I see them cheap on craigslist and bringing them home, tricking them out and then reselling them for $100 to $150 profit for awhile now.
it has kicked in some extra income nicely helping buy kids school cloths, wife a nice dinner, etc etc
Just my two cents.

+1... Unless these guys are giving donations to the chefs. These guys are also a lot here in Florida. That's why I also give an ad offering a FREE help in putting Android on their HD2.
Very much not trying to start a flame war here because I believe people have the right to do as they please...
But you must have some serious time on your hands to post on craigslist for free services. I need to reinstall my notebook, would you knock that out for me?
Just giving you a hard time.
But on the other issue you brought up. I personally donate to chefs who are elite and really drive some innovation with fixing issues, be it on the vibrant, HD2, nexus, etc. I own and follow six different phones and follow the serious chefs for those products. and kick into the beer fund from time to time. Again just like some who spend there time fixing up a phone for someone who doesn't feel like learning it themselves is really no different then people grabbing roms from here and throwing it on their phones. they technically (could) read, learn and create roms for there own personal use but they rather have someone who is a little smarter do it for them and if they are feeling generous they may kick in a couple bucks as a thank you.
People "don't" have to pay to get their phone tricked out but if they dont feel like spending the time learning it then hell....why not make a buck doing it for them.

If we lived in a perfect world sure it would be great if they gave part of the profit to the original devs, but we dont and honestly if it get more people into Android is that a bad thing? Most noobs cant even figure out how to put widgets on their screen(had to help a lady do that) so there is no way they can do it themselves even if to us its easy so why not make them happy and the geek can make a little cash. But I agree donating a little to the devs would be the nice thing to do.
All of you have some very valid points. I just found it frustrating that the dev's would see no money from their own product. At the very least what can happen is that the dev's get introduced to other groups of people who in turn may come here, learn to flash their own rom and eventually donate.
CL service providers
I agree with both perspectives on this issue.
a. Yes, there are sereral ppl providing such services
b. Yes, there are several students openly stating they learned how to do this and will do this for you for pizza money (Like $10-$15, so much for big business ideas)
c. Yes, the ppl doing this should donate to devs periodically.
d. Yes, there are several youtube videos out there showing step by step instructions on how to do the upgrades.
e. Yes, several so called craigslist experts end up bricking customer's phones, leave with buggy setups, incorrect radios, robotic voices :-D
I think its best for devs to continue their hard work for the community that appreciates and benefits from their work is far larger than the select few who go K2. The donations will continue to pour in as the development reaches to immaculate full-featured build solutions. At which point, the devs could consider options for official sales of their roms and android builds.

Everyone help join in and make google do this!!!!

guys, i started a discussion on GOOGLES FORUM regarding the implementation of google voice. PLEASE, add this. I use this so much, as do my colleagues, that im baffled by it not being used, especially since we all have ported numbers, it would be picture perfect. even if you dont have it....please just agree on the forum for them to add it so they can see the consumer need of it.
thank you CLICK BELOW (also please respond on this thread to let us all know you are helping the cause)

I would be tempted to PAY people to post there, I am so sick of them NOT adding these functions to the tablets due to US carrier greed and stupidity.
posted there...
Its moving fast!
Thank you guys. keep it going, google will listen. and even IF they were going to implement it...this will help them let us know..cause honestly..the suspense is killer.
Lets Go!

Help me understand how you want to use this with the Xoom. I know a little about Google Voice but I do not integrate it with my current phone... only play with it on the side.
Ok I read that thread. Someone help me understand something... do you guys want to carry around your Xoom and use it as your phone? Why?
I have no plans to stop using my Nexus One. I feel like a loser because I don't understand the big deal here. Someone explain it to me like I'm a child.
jesus christ no
ok clearly you dont get it. not a big deal.
its more then that, lets say im on my tablet, phone not near me
voice mails get transcribed/organized from it as well as textmessages (that are done through data!)
everything can be starred, controlled and archived
meaning you can organize your information on a much better level.
you can control how a voicemail are answered for particular people, have a do not disturb time as well.
you can download voice mails and phonecall recordings, and mail them.
its not so i can have a oversized phone. its just much, much more than that, and so convenient, so i can have that information on me and control it.
I hope this helped. you should try youtubing google voice videos to see just how amazing it is.
if you dont find it to fit your needs i understand (or you probably didnt really read more into it, i just got into it last year and pretty much got ALOT of people in it as well)
please help at least on the forum, much appreciated.
Yes, I'm looking forward to the day I can hold my Xoom to my head while walking through NYC and talking to my friends
I use GV on my ipad as I'll get text messages on that number. The GV client is for the iphone and doesn't scale up as nicely but it works. Also, I find it easier to listen to email and take notes on the larger screen.
Posted. Thanks for the link, that was quick and simple to add a reply on.
Lets cross our fingers!
I would've put money on this being an app Google would've included with the launch of 3.0. Posted.
thanks.

Totally needs to be ported over.

Off to throw in my comment. Count me into the people who don't use GV for voice, but for SMS and retrieving my VoiceMail. I'm in Europe a couple of times a year and this lets me stay connected to people in the States as it all works on WiFi too.
I'll bet that the only reason the .APK is FCing is 'cause it's tripping over the APIs needed for telephony, which probably aren't in a tablet-only codebase (right now). It might be as simple (OK, probably not ) as commenting that code out?
How about you just use it via the browser for now? Like how it was done on iPhone before apple let the app on the market.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
... because if I'm going to have to manually check my browser every few minutes to see if I've gotten an SMS, it somewhat defeats the point doncha think? I've moved nearly everything that sends SMS (even my credit cards and my airlines) to GV SMS because you're not tied to any particular carrier.
Luckily I'm still carrying an Android phone so I get my notifications there, but I've piled on in the request thread so that they can hopefully get what must be a relatively-straightforward fix in before I have to leave the States again- I'd like to be able to use my Xoom for everything while abroad.
keep it going
decent amount of people have posted, im surpised google mods havent replied. ive seen them do some swift replies else where for the most part too...intresting
I've never used it but there again, I've never owned an Android-based device. Just wanted to support your endeavors!

Sprint is screwing their Google-voice integrated customers!

Please see the following Google-voice thread to see how Sprint is charging absorbent overage fees to those who enabled their recent Sprint-Google Voice integration service.
google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=2562773645cde8a6&hl=en&fid=2562773645cde8a60004a37c24b42a07
Thats stupid. I hope they get it fixed as I was hopeful that Sprint would be just the first step in better google voice integration with carriers. I'd really like MMS to work with everyone for instance.
wow.... I had no idea this was going on. I've actually been contemplating linking my google voice and spritn accounts.
Good find.
at one point wasn't another carrier making it hard for google voice integration as well?
.
Thread moved. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
