Vault type aps - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have some weird but probably noob problem. The thing is that I love private mode on s5 but it encrypt everything on internal sd which is very annoying. I haven't found a solution on how to hide my ext sd media on my ext sd. Installed plenty of vault applications but every single time I couldn't change vault location to my external sd card. The card is 32gb made for Android with primary fat32 and 2 gb swap ext4. I got Samsung s5 g900f European model running Android 5.0 without root.

Theyre going to be easily accessible no matter what unless you encrypt them or something, you could use privaye mode included woth the phone, or theres some apps that will make an encrypted volume for you.

For starters, afaik private mode makes its own partition on the infernal sd, theres no full encryption, just an encrypted partition. As for the encrypted volume apps most need root so, i found two that look good though, cryptonite or eds lite, i would check those.

Custom System Status with no Root?

How is it possible to have a custom system status if I did not root my phone? I tried to do a check for a software update, and it says "your device has been modified. Software updates are not available." I have not rooted my phone, so I'm not sure how the system could be "custom". I checked the Knox kernel and warranty void, both are 0x0. Any ideas?
UPDATE: I unmounted and removed my sd card, restarted the phone and it's fine. This is the same sd card that I used in my rooted Note2. I wonder if there's something left over that's making the Note 3 think it's rooted....

It works until you reinsert the sd card and reboot. I'm not sure what on the sd card is making it think it's rooted. I think I will try wiping my sd card. Will report back.
UPDATE: Ok, wiping the sd card works.
its because you have a 64GB SD card...note sure why, but i had this issue since my S4 and still have it today on my note 3. It sucks but it will come back whenever you start putting stuff back on your SD, there is no way around this, i've been working on a thread in the S4 section and have over 300 replies but no one was able to fix this

yes it looks like to be specific to a 64GB card...
but I've done a few tests one year ago on my S3 that also had the same problem...
it was working fine with a newly formatted card.
it was also working fine with a small amount of music file... but as soon as I filled my card (with at 5GB space left), it started to show custom status.
Today I found out that I had the same problem with my Note 3 when trying to detect/install the latest update. Sad to see that Samsung did not fix this problem.
it looks like that that process that scans the SD card at boot is causing some type of false identification...
I'm sure it would be an easy fix for Samsung... but you have to find someone to first understand this problem and work on it.
I've contacted Samsung support in the past and the only thing they told me was to use a 32GB card max.
I found something interesting today...
I synched around 50GB of music files today... And after a reboot, I got the custom device status. My sync folder had a few hundreds of files and subfolders.
I moved all the files in one unique folder and rebooted my device.
Boot was faster... Media scanner finished a lot faster... And device status was back to normal.
It's not a fix... But at least it's a work around that might help someone.

Private Mode saves to internal storage, can I make it to external SD?

Absolutely love this feature more so because it's encrypting the data but it is currently limited to internal storage which is very limited with only 16gb models.
Anyone figure out how to make it use an external SD card for directories?
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of private mode? If someone wanted to look at your files they could just remove your card and put it into a computer...if it's on the internal card they would first need to unlock your phone before having access to it's contents....I could see where it could be useful for hiding files from someone who has access to your phone but isn't that tech savvy tho
Sent from my SM-G900P using xda app-developers app
Well the files are encrypted so even if removed SD card they still need to Crack encryption. But I agree it's safer on internal memory but what if you want to store 10gb or more?
Hmmm idk I haven't messed with private mode until just now.it's pretty cool...I didn't realize that it encrypted the data. I just thought it hid it on your phone. Maybe someone will figure it out eventually...
Sent from my SM-G900P using xda app-developers app
I read that it's basically a stripped down version of Knox without the protected application environment. So it's easy to move items into it and let any app access them rather than restrictions Knox approved apps only.
I'm guessing the encryption is the same as Knox too
I can't get it to work. Is it because I'm rooted?

Yes most likely because it is a form of Knox and root breaks Knox

That's because the encryption is on the container, not on the files.

so i'm trying to create a container on the external SD card then that is also encrypted using Private Mode
otherwise Private Mode is seriously limited to internal memory size which is also shared with apps (and camera burst mode)
16 GB is starting to look real small

I would personally also prefer to have the option to select a section of my MicroSD as a 'private sector' so to speak. That way, if your phone dies, you can transfer the microSd and access from the new phone, or potentially unlock it via a PC with a password/ software suite. Now if your phone/screen dies, you're f*cked..

You can toggle it quickly by choosing to display the button in the notification bar drop down.
If you're having trouble with it and set it up for fingerprint then delete all your fingerprints it should turn ask you the backup password you created at the time of fingerprints registered. If you don't have that you are either someone trying to hack into their significant others phone or just very forgetful

Use Samsung's own app for file moving, worked for me with with multimedia files.
Save it to phone memory then transfer to sd card using my files app.

SDFix definitely fixes the issue if you are rooted. Android 4.4 changes the stock permissions, so apps only have read/write permissions to folders that they create and can't write to folders created manually or by other apps. SDFix restores permissions to how they were prior to 4.4. Its less secure, but it allows programs like Titanium Backup to function again.

I have no problems with nova backup to sd on my s4,and its on 4.4 too
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Right now there isn't a way to change the folder where the Nova backups are stored (/sdcard/data/com.teslacoilsw.launcher/backup). What you can do next time is make your backup and then copy it to your SD card or PC. When you do your next reset you can copy that backup file back to where it's expected to be and be back in business. Kind of poor coding that you can't just save it to your SD in the first place...
Omega ROM doesn't have that glitch.
An app called File expert can read/write to external xd card without root. They have sorted this issue out
Sdfix did work guys. I used it to backup Nova setting on ExtSd

strange.. I have no problem before OR after rooting,(I have an s5 Active on AT&T)... Is it too much trouble to try restoring and starting from scratch? Quite obviously youre having a problem others aren't,(storing music on an sd card). That would lead one to belive its either a software or hardware problem specific to YOU only. Something has happened since your last clean set-up..
I don't know.. im quite slow witted but that's an idea..
of course, however, im adding them to the sd card FROM MY EXTERNAL HD. NOT from the s5 internal memory to the sd card... ...if that's the case, try moving from the phone's memory to a folder on your desktop and then back into the phone via sd card
Doing it that way yes I can achieve the desired result.
I have a media server that I used to be able to acces as follows
Es file explorer > media server
Copy file from server to sd card
Now I cant do it that way.
So I add the additional step and it works.
The other issue is quikpix or any 3rd party viewer I used to be able to delete pictures straight out of quikpix now it says I can only delete from the pre installed view (sviewer)
I hope that makes sense

Probably a permissions error. Kitkat restricted third party app access to the SD card to make the OS more secure. Which broke a lot of apps. But I'm just guessing because you didn't provide any details that would enable us to troubleshoot it properly. Lots of errors.. uh huh. But what were those errors? What firmware version? How is the SD card formatted? What app are you using when the errors occur?
It's like saying your car is having problems.. but not giving any idea of what that really means. Did you have trouble starting your car? Won't go faster than 70 km/h.. stall.. weak brakes.. oil pressure light on? And for that matter, what model of car are we talking about? Knowing what specific SD card errors you had is rather essential information and it's odd that you wouldn't give us those details.
I don't think you did a forum search or you would have literally tripped over all the SD card problem threads and mentioned that. Most of the recent threads talk about the problems Kitkat introduced and it isn't hard to find posts in many of them describing how to fix the issue.

TWRP nandroid backup on SD card with Marshmallow

I have a question about doing a TWRP backup and restore from an SD card. I was able to backup my current ROM to my SD card (I should note that I am running Marshmallow and using my SD card as adoptable storage), but I am not able to access the backup from my PC or from any file manager app on the phone.
the backup appears to be in /external_sd/media/0/TWRP/backups but I can't seem to find that folder anywhere to copy that backup folder to my PC. Is there a way to overcome this?
Yes, make your sd card portable storage.

SD card formatted portable, but not recognized in recovery (TWRP). So, I reformatted again as portable. Still nothing. I cleared data for media and external storage. Still nothing.

Should I try another recovery? Did I miss something?

This is an old post but this answer might help someone now also, it tricked me for a min. In twrp when you hit backup at the bottom of the screen it says "storage" click that, then choose your SD card or internal memory for the backup.
