I did not realize the factory reset erases the internal storage also. Luckily I always back up everything before I do anything like that. I actually did it about a week ago but got to thinking about it and Just thought I'd tell y'all in case someone else didn't know. Because my last droid did not do that and neither does my tablet.
Yup it warns you before you factory reset that it will reset your internal storage

Hmmm. I must have missed the internal storage part. But I always back up everything before I do something like that anyway. Because we all know things don't always go the way they should with this stuff LOL
Indeed, ended up having to go to my desktop to get all my music, videos etc. back in.

And custom recoveries like TWRP which have the option to wipe without deleting the internal storage.
This shouldn't be a surprise. "Factory Reset" explains it all. It didn't come from the factory with crap on the internal storage

True but like I said my last Motorola Droid didn't erase storage and neither does my tablet. But lil goof up like I did this time "I didn't read the warning" is the reason I always backup my stuff before I do anything major like that. This ain't my first rodeo. I learned my lesson about that way back in the DroidX days. Lol
Just learned this one the hard way. On the bright side I've been meaning to go through my pics and clean it out. Well its clean now lol

TiBu isn't a backup if you don't save a copy off of your device, in which case it becomes useful even after a factory reset.

Well... My G1 has been running Super D for about forever now and yesterday I decided to try ZX Donut Build 2.3 and it was fast! But some things I needed did not work(they work in v2.4).
As I use nandroid to get back to Super D somne of my apps were missing, I used a previous back up and the apps that were not included in the newer back up were there.
Later I forgot when you repartition your SD card it formats it
I'll edit this later in a rush.
Meh Nandroid basically is just good for data.
e.x. if you make a nandroid then go download some new apps or update some, then nan restore you won't have those apps. And some apps are protected funny, specifically paid apps, and some others I've came across.
Start using a bart restore it has been way better to me.
And yea yea yea we know you repartitioned your sd card and lost your back up, we know the story
Yes, I used to laugh at everyone who said "is there a way to recover my data on the sd card?!!?" Now I feel foolish and hate myself... Need I dare say my G1 is annoying me but, I know the next day I'm going to praise it.
Well There Is One Good Thing.... IT RUNS SUPER FAST on SUPER D!

Little late huh?
I'm not that specifi and informed on Android now days.
But as far as my end user self see's it
Nandroid backs up data
e.g. texts
app info
Bart basically does everything
It copies your partitons, your applications, etc etc.
Then there is a funny difference between a nandroid and bart between installed/updated applications that I don't remember.
When I regret deleting something, I restore it using "Recuva".

You never need over 600mb. Honestly, there's no way you need 500 apps+ (which still probably wouldn't fill up 600mb.)
Does anyone think that it would be ok to simply resize rather than wipe/reinstall/reformat to lower size?
I don't think you can. If you could, I wouldn't. Just backup all your data on sdcard, reformat it, then transfer it all back.
It's not too bad.

Can you explain how such a thing could cause such a failure?
Its looking to update something that isn't there. When it doesn't find it, the update doesn't know what to do, so it fails.

He is correct about this. If you delete or remove anything system wise make sure you have a back up copy. Come time for an update and that file is not there, it will most likely fail. Make sure you take note of the file permissions also.

This was really simple to delete but what a mistake as I actually want to run it from time to time. If no one can give me a way to download it I will be forced to reset my device as new.
I don't really want to do this but I will if necessary. Live and learn.
SYSTEM Updates do not look after apps present BUT ONLY THE DEVICE SPECIFIC SERIAL NUMBER AND VERSION NUMBER !
System updates do NOT look after specific apps to be present or not.
After major complete updates all system apps disabled are reinstalled and have to be deactivated again .

Hard (factory) reset won't bring any files back. An update however, or a reflash of original ROM will do the trick.
To all saying that removing system files will fail OTA: Stop posting stuff you know nothing about. It's better to shut up rather than guessing.

So if I hit reset and wipe everything it won't restore the tablet like it was when I got it out of the box? You're kidding right! Every other tablet / phone I've ever owned will do so.
I guess I'll just have to back up some data to test this out.

This has been a proven case with the transformer series. So I would say we know nothing about. We are just stating that it could. I don't believe anyone stated that it would for sure.

Had the same thing happen with the rezound. If the bloatware was removed it failed to update. If it didn't have the stock recovery it failed to update. Again differences between OEMs as has been stated with Asus having done the something.

Deleting the screensaver app should not cause the ota to fail. Otherwise Samsung wouldn't allow that action to be performed so easily without root. Put it this way... if you can go into manage apps and click uninstall chances are it's not system critical.

I know I've already asked about Factory resetting, but I am just wondering what it does. My friend seems to think doing it could harm the phone, but I just thought it set it back to they way it was before I bought it. i.e. perfect condition.
It's just, I performed a factory reset on my phone because I was bothered about a virus. I then checked the box to back up my phone and it downloaded EVERYTHING. I did another reset to wipe it all, but forgot to uncheck the flipping back up box again and it did it again. I couldn't be bothered manually deleting all the apps, so I performed the reset again, and unchecked the box and got it right.
That won't do anything detrimental to my phone would it?
Sorry about my questions. Just not often I have a top end phone.
Nope. Just erases everything. So save whatever you don't want gone.

Okay cool.
And whilst am at it. If I downloaded an app that was a bit 'dodgy', and I uninstalled it, would a factory reset be necessary or once it's been deleted is my phone clean? I'm still unsure about viruses and Android, and concerned since I do banking on my phone.
I'm not sure whether to remove the 4Shared app from my phone.

A few apps, mostly Chinese, are called viruses but are actually mal-ware. They typically masquerade as a free version of a popular pay only app to lure smucks in. Google deletes them from the playstore whenever they find them but people can still side load them. Best defense is to not install any apps from Chinese developers or install an anti-virus app, I use Comodo.

Okay. The only reason I've kept on factory resetting is because I hastily setup my phone and kept resorting everything from my old phone. Stuff I didn't want or use anymore, so I ended up resetting my phone about 5 times lol. I took care on the last one and got it right, though. Was just worried about resetting a few times. Guess it's okay then.

How about OnePlus switch app that is already present at the phone. You can do backups and restores from the app.

But getting the backup from internal storage to somewhere less volatile is difficult - large files, slow even over USB 3 connection. Oh for a microUSB card...
