Awful battery life with any ROM/kernel - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i've a i9505 and my battery life is awful, no matter wich kernel i'm using. I've already bought a new battery (RAV Power) but nothing changed. There's a way to check what causes those incredibile drain/a way to solve my problem? Right now, i lose up to 10% with a 15 minutes video on YouTube...

Search for Better Battery Stats on the forums and install it to check to see if you have a wakelock or other issue keeping your device awake.

Why is that drain? In general you only have battery drain when you lose lot's of battery while screen is off.
You screen uses power. Your cpu uses power. Your gpu uses power. 10% battery when watching 15 minutes on Youtube is perfectly normal.

Not when you've everything off except for Wi-Fi. Also, i'm always with just 15% of brightness and i locked all my cores to 1600 MHz, that's just not normal, my battery life was way better 3-4 months ago.

10% per 15 mins extrapolates to 100-0% in 150 mins. Which is 2 hours and 30 minutes of on-screen time. I'd say it's rather bad.
@Madafacca do you have a good signal reception? Bad signal can drain your battery a lot. I'm talking about carrier signal, not wi-fi signal.

Facebook is a resource hog. I haven't seen an app to use so much RAM as facebook does. And it also cripples the performance of the phone.

Everything is disabled in FB app, notifications, refresh, so when i exit it, it doesn't do any background refresh.... you can't say that is because of FB because I had like almost every phone until now ( except 2015 flagships ) and only s4 is so bad at battery, switched from s5 to s4 because I was broke and had to sell it, before s5 I had note 3, lg g2, m7, m8, z2, s4 active, note 2 ( 2nd best battery life after lg g2 )

Well, I don't know what's wrong with your phone. I can get 100-50% in about 2 hours gaming. I generally don't let it go under 50%. So that should mean about 4 hours total if I were to go 100-1%.

Battery calibration is a waste of time. All calibration does is wipe batterystats.bin, which is wiped when the device is fully charged anyway. Thus a waste of time.

In general I never get more then 2,5 hours of screen on time if I even make it.
It depends on how you use it I guess and the state of your battery.

Well, something is obviously draining your battery. 100-0% in 2 hours is just too much. In 2 hours I go from 100-50% when gaming. Of course, no wifi, lowest screen brightness, no bluetooth and no useless app's (like facebook app) running in the background thanks to greenify.
Put your phone in airplane mode and see how much drain you get. In airplane mode there should be practically no drain, since keeping the device connected to the network eats battery.

Yes there is but until we get some data from him we're basically tossing darts blindfolded. I recommended in post 2 that he install Better Battery Stats from the forums. If he runs it and posts its output, that should be of assistance in pinpointing where his battery drain is coming from.
OP, help us help you. Get the app, run it, and save a log of its data before your battery dies.

[Q] Battery life?

I apologize if this was asked before (I did a search of the forums but nothing really came up), but I'm wondering what others' experience with the battery life of the S4 is? This is my first smart phone and coming from a non-smartphone, I'm not sure if my expectations on battery life are unrealistic.
I got the S4 on 4/29 and brought it through one full charge cycle and several part cycles. Battery life is pretty important to me so I put an all black background (since its AMOLED), keep the brightness to below 10%, turn off all the fancy sensor things, turned on power saver mode, turn off wifi and data unless I really need to use it, turn off all sync so it only happens manually, etc. Yesterday, I charged it to 100% to see how long it would last and the stats I got were:
At 6% battery left, I had a total screen on-time of 2 hours and 58 mins and 1 d 2 hr on battery. Then, when I charged it to 100% and took out the charger, after about 5 minutes of it sleeping/screen off, the battery percentage dropped down to 97% with no data, no wifi, no active apps running.
With my pretty battery-friendly settings on my phone (or at least I think so), is this battery stat normal to others with this phone? Or do you think something might be wrong with the battery?
That sound horrible. There must be some rogue apps running/some wakelocks - try using better battery stats and find out.

For a smartphone, an 'all-day' battery is fine, and given that the S4 has so many sensors, large screen and a powerful processor, I am happy with the battery lasting for 12-16 hours. I don't turn off any sensors, why get an S4 to run it on power saver mode and turn everything off? It defeats the purpose, in my opinion. I am trying to use as many features as possible on my S4. Of course, there are a few I don't, but just for personal preference. What you are doing is (no offence) in my opinion like getting a BMW M3 and running it on 4 pistons to save fuel.
Anyway, your battery life will improve after about 10-15 charge cycles, I noticed that with my past phones as well. If you need your battery to last longer, I would suggest getting a spare battery and keep it charged at all times for any emergencies. These are some of the reasons I love Samsung, removable batteries and microSD card slot.
thanks for the replies guys. I'll try the betterbatterystats app out. i'll probably take it back to sprint and see if they'll replace the battery for me. the screen accounts for about 50% of the battery usage in the stats and other apps take up the rest. the battery curve is pretty linear in a downward slope too (except when i don't use it at night, it becomes much flatter, albeit still downward).
haha its funny you say that, because i agree completely. the m3 is my dream car and if i could ever afford one, i would probably baby the crap out of it the reason why i got the s4 (and i also compared it to the htc one as a possible candidate) is because of the removable battery, sd card, nd most importantly: camera. that 13 megapixel shooter + hdr is really great for good photos on the go. speaking of which, i use the camera alot. is the physical use of the camera and the screen use a big power hog?

[Q] Battery drainige on ALL custom roms \ kernels ever tried since 2011

Hello
i'm new here, but not new in ways of flashing and rooting and stuff.
My main problem i'm stuck at for over 4 years
Galaxy S2 i9100
Galaxy S3 i9300
Galaxy Note 2
Galaxy S4 LTE i9505
Galaxy S4 LTE T-Mobile (Netherlands) GT-i9505
BATTERY DRAIN ON EVERY CUSTOM ROM\KERNEL EVER
Let's go:
Samsung Galaxy S4 T-Mobile GT-i9505 (NO NOT THE SGH-i337, I DONT LIVE IN AMERICA)
Whatever ROM \ Kernel i tried: DRAIN
Kernel : Any
Location off
bluetooth off
signal strengt: Lived almost under a cell tower, 100 percent signal
Airplane mode, wont make a difference
Sync off (ALL SYNC)
New battery : Not resolving anything
Wipe? I could wipe for billion times wont solve ****
Brightness low - (auto disabled)
Disabled automatic time
disabled google maps log report + Disabled the whole app
Disabled auto update play store
disabled virbration
disabled touch sounds
disabled automatic wifi scan
Removing SD Card : Nope not solving anything
Trying different roms? : I tried all possibilitys
Calibrated battery? Check no solve
"Settle the rom (bull**** but was worth trying) No solve
Replaced model??Check! No solve
Gsam Battery monitor? Check, Not a drastic drain...??
Undervolting, .. nope
underclocking,,, nope
powersave governe? nope
Using 2g as priimary network? you can already guess it
Average battery 100-0 5 - 6 hours. When using losing 2 percent in 3 minutes average, playing simple games (COC) 30 percent in 10 mins
The solution to get normal battery back?? TOUCHWIZ STOCK (EVEN CUSTOM BASED TWROMS DRAIN)
So my phone lasts longer, if it only has 500 mb ram left instead of 1.3 gb (wich was on custom)
Battery goes longer with bloatware from samsung + tmobile running in the background
Its like if you drive 200 kilometers per hour on max rpm using less gasoline then driving eco mode on low rpm.
IM SICK OF IT FOR OVER 4 BLOODY YEARS ALL THE SAME BULLS*T
ANY HELP IS MUUUUUUCH APPRECIATED
THANKS IN ADVANCE
YOU GUYS R AWESOME!!
PEACE!
Custom roms don't have the same battery life as stock roms, true.
But what you're describing is clearly not normal. Last time I charged my phone was 18 hours ago. I'm now at 75% percent. There was some moderate usage (mostly texting) but the phone was mostly idle.
Well the only constant factor is you. I think you just expect to much of a smartphone. A screen on time of 2-4 hours is normal. Also it's common to charge it every night.

Maybe it has something to do with root. Since it happens only on rooted roms.
I can't find any explanation why you have good battery life on stock but bad battery life on any custom rom.

Remove all apps you don't need. Install wakelock detector to see what is consuming battery on your device Then disable them using greenify or servicely . You can also run this script http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/guide-reducing-google-play-services-t3139032 .
Remove extra bloatware , avoid using wifi , reduce screen brightness .. or go back to kitkat.
I would rather suggest to change your battery dude, 2 years for a mobile battery is more than enough.
Only apps was installed on my device is WhatsApp, facebook, Instagram and Greenify.
Yesterday I downgrade to KitKat and the battery very bad (Cloudy 2.2)
Same problem here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/help/lg-g2-d802-battery-draining-5-0-2-t3256313/
I also got bad battery life with all LG lollipop rom and stock kitkat , but I get terrific battery life with cloudy g2 2.2. Like 6.5 hours of SOT. Just make sure you clean flash and reduce background app by clearing recent apps.
Are there any apps that show the battery Wear level

6.5 hours?!?! Are you sure?
1.5 to 2 hours of SOT is the most I can get out of my two-week-old G2.
I bought is from a "mobile shop" on aliexpress.
Yes, it is refurbished... ,it looked like brand new on the outside.
... however, when I disconnect it from the charger in the morning (7 am) a few hours, and a few phone calls later it is already at 85%
at noon there is 65% left.
at the evening - somewhere around 22h - the battery usually dies completely ...
14-15 hours of usage on battery... NO games, NO Youtube videos.
Max 30 minutes browsing the news (on WiFi)... and an hour of phone calls (city center, so no problem with reception...)
When the screen is on (btw. I set it to 70% brightness) I can literally see the battery percentage indicator decrease every few minutes...
Looks like I got a phone with bad battery... didn't I?
I'm on KitKat (4.4.2 stock) D802 version...
I had this problem on my freedompop(sprint) "refurbished" phone. Even though it looked like new on the outside, I would only get 2-3hrs sot. After replacing the battery I now get more than double that. Factory reset, disable/uninstall the apps you don't need, and only install the apps you do need. If you still get bad battery life then the only option is a new battery.
Btw, a custom rom will NOT give you significantly better sot unless it severely cuts performance and lcd brightness.

Well if you are using kitkat then i must say you got a faulty or old old battery . G2 on kitkat is/was a beast , I can recall those days when i used to get 7+ hrs sot on kitkat . you should call or email to your seller and tell them the problem you are facing.
After sorting through potential power draining apps etc.. You could try a battery calibrator of some sort. I used one and a big difference noticed, however after it's fully charged in the morning I take it off the charger and leave it sit there for at least 30 mins without touching it and battery life is even better.
Thank you all for your answers.
In the mean time I installed this Battery Monitor Widget.... and it gives me some "interesting" readings:
1. my phone charges ridiculously fast. From 37% to 100% in 70-80 minutes... Connected to the charger at 00:04. At 01:14 it was already at 99% (This widget gathers info every 10 minutes)
https://goo.gl/photos/DDerdsk2mSdKipMt7
...and it charges with an insane amount of current (over 2100 mA)
https://goo.gl/photos/VJd7iUFMm5A4s3UeA
2. there are some kind of "spikes" in battery usage, but after a few minutes the battery seems to recover...
this is the battery voltage statistics:
https://goo.gl/photos/Uh96utz1aBJNV3qCA
So, It is more and more evident, I got a faulty battery...
Now, only if I could know where to buy a GENUINE LG battery...
Aliexpress is full of "shops" claiming they are selling "original" LG batteries, however there are quite a few negative reviews about them... (batteries are lighter, thinner, deteriorating fast... etc.)

Help with new s7 edge PLEASE

Hello,
After reading alot of reviews about the s7 edge battery life i decided to get it. so i got 2 days ago and was really excited about it. the problem the battery is draining so fast and thats really confusing
ive seen screenshots with 50 hours and 60 hours with estimated time. mine barely shows 7 hours. today for example i left the house at 8 with 92% and now im back wth 36% left screen was on auto with wifi
and 3g and sometime gps on. is this normal? am i being paranoid? is it true that the battery will get better with more days of use?
Please tell me what should i do im really worried that its faulty or something.
PS: i did a factory reset before i use it.
Yes, it will take a couple of days for the battery to level out. Do you have the Exynos or Snapdragon processor? What apps are reporting high battery use? Have you disabled any apps?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, but all of these things play a role in your battery life. I recommend GSAM battery monitor and Greenify with aggressive doze, but I will say that 50-60 hours is ambitious. I can usually get 25-30 hours with about 5 hours of SOT. That is with a combination of wifi, 4g, gps and Bluetooth on (android wear), some gaming and facebook, instagram, etc.

Hi thanks for the reply, yeah its my fault i forgot to mention some information
I am using the Exynos model in Netherlands. the screen is always on the top of the list of the battery usage. im using gsam to monitor the battery and i dont think there is anything unusual there android system on the top using 25% or something. im really scared of using anything so it wont die on me outside today i was only navigating and doing some whatsapp calls on the 3g network "not even 4g". i only disabled facebook and using nova launcher and the AOD is off also. im not sure if i should send it back... how many days are we talking about for the battery to get better? i only want somehow a good battery not worse than my old grand prime. as i said i got it wendesday's evening and now its friday and its still bad

If I'm reading correctly, you are losing about 60% in 5 hours? If so, that is definitely excessive even during the first 2 or 3 days unless the screen was on and the phone active the entire time. Can you post screen shots of you battery stats? Maybe some app is causing the problem, but is not being reported as using too much battery.
Some folks say that the different firmwares have different battery usage. Has yours updated?

ok someone told me to turn it off and charge to 100% so i dont have enough data now. but im doing a test now with pokemon go lol
the screen is on about 70% brightness wifi and gps are on and radio is off (i have low cell signal now) and music app playing in the background and now after 50 minutes i am at 89% with screen on all the time. do you think this is good or bad?
i just noticed something in most of the screen shots from other people gsam shows about 3.80v near the temperature but mine show 4.07v does this makes any difference?
That sounds normal for an hour of paying Pokemon Go. It's pretty battery intensive. That voltage is just the current battery charge. It'll drop as your battery percent drops.

Stock QC2 Firmware - Battery tips?

Hi Friends,
Just wonder if this is normal for this phone, or you guys could give me some pointers for extending my battery life, specifically the Screen On Time?
I have:
- Stock QC2 firmware - I believe this is Nougat with the March security patch
- No Facebook installed (Disabled)
- I am on data about 8 hours a day, rest is WiFi, Bluetooth for my Watch, and NFC is off
- Generally use a black and red theme
- Doing Ad blocking with the AdClear VPN solution
- Sometimes I make conference calls of under 2 hours
- No games, no YouTube watching
With this set I can barely manage like 3 hours of SOT. Is this normal? What am I doing wrong? Any pointers? Thanks!
3 hours SOT is not normal for unrooted stock. I would suggest downloading GSam Battery Monitor and finding out what is hogging the battery. Note that you will need to manually enable the battery statistics permission with ADB for some reason, but after that it will work like normal.
The top two lines should be Android System and Kernel. If you see any non-system app in the vicinity, that is your likely culprit unless you can explain it with normal usage (for example, Firefox is at the top of the list on mine because I surf the web with it)
Alternately, if nothing odd shows up, you may have a bad battery.
The other thing you might take a look at is shutting off the Location setting that scans Wifi/Bluetooth. That is a massive battery killer
Thank you for the helpful responses guys! I'll try GSam Battery stuff... What are your SOTs BTW?
Thanks!
Also my vibration is always on, my back lit keys are always on, and a 30 second screen timeout time, if it helps? Thanks!
Finally, this is the AT&T model with all the bloat disabled.
I'm typically off charge 18 hours and on data the entire time. I do run a Exchange email app that pushes email, my SOT isn't really huge, maybe around 2-3 hours and I also have BT always on and connected to my S3 Frontier. At the end of my day, I end up with with battery around 50% ish.........
Did you recently update, or did you do a clean install? Sometimes the battery can take a few days to settle in

That's pretty amazing! Yes, clean install and updated from MM to Nougat and then the latest patch.
I've got a battery monitoring app installed now... Let's see what it unveils... I'm thinking maybe it's my settings, syncing and etc, cause I NEVER get the SOTs people report on XDA LOL, on any phone really except the Mate 9 I had...

I'd give it a few days to settle in.
Battery life is SO subjective. The app's installed and the person's usage habits play a massive part in battery life, and you saying that you never get what others are, speak a lot to that.
The built in optimizers in Nougat seem to do a pretty good job at putting unused battery sucking apps to sleep.

Hi Friends,
Just wonder if this is normal for this phone, or you guys could give me some pointers for extending my battery life, specifically the Screen On Time?
Thanks!

I notice one thing, when i connect my Gear 2 by bluetooth battery on phone less about 10-15% less. With out watch and no FB and FB messenger, NFC on, most of day on data, wifi off, 5-6 hours call ( do to nature of my job) i get around 3.5 hours SOT.

I agree bud, so I think my usage pattern must be horrible, cause from the earliest Androids like Droid Incredible to Axon 7 and S7 Edge and others, I never get what people mention. And some of their claimed usage is ridiculous, they say they play games all day, LTE, Videos and still get like 5 hours or etc... Boggles my mind. My biggest battery hog I suspect is my VPN based AdGuard, maybe the vibration, but compared to gaming and etc, they sound so insignificant.

Yeah, that's more like my usage. Without my Watch, this may be the case. I don't use NFC. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

3 hours SOT is not normal for unrooted stock. I would suggest downloading GSam Battery Monitor and finding out what is hogging the battery. Note that you will need to manually enable the battery statistics permission with ADB for some reason, but after that it will work like normal.

This is a actually normal for USA SAMSUNG battery which is why no1 should get Galaxy S7 on USA carriers battery is even 100 maH smaller at 3500. Battery is always crap usa versions. And I am stuck in them nougat is bad for battery nothing you can do but downgrade to Android 6.0.1 with Odin. Best battery I can upload a vid for proof att Samsung S7 edge battery sucks and so will all USA carriers s8 never buying Samsung again GG. Switch phones best option iPhones have best battery but I hate them. I'd go for a phone with biggest mAh in specs and read reviews for battery. If downgrading doesn't work sorry for all Samsung lovers who read this it's just fact if you actually compare USA version to international. Battery on international is 92 ish hours not even close on USA version +1 sorry for my rant. Second best option I went to zero lemon and got a battery charging case that was like 10000 something maH and I never loose battery because I keep case on entire time makes phone weigh 4 pounds tho

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, bud, I think I would agree, this must be reality. An update for me, seems like getting rid of the VPN based Adblocker has helped battery. Last night, I finally got 4 hours SOT, but that was with the VPN app. Trying without it all day, let's see how it goes.
BTW, hands down, the best battery I have ever seen in the US is on the Huawei Mate 9, even on Nougat. The HUGE battery helps, but legitimately, I was getting 7 hours of SOT.
Thanks guys!
Got the attached SOT after turning off the VPN based ad blocker and using it as needed, rather than on the whole time... Is this closer to normal? ?
I only get 3-4hrs SOT but it is connected to my huawei watch and music is playing when it connects to my bluetooth fm transmitter in my car. I also usually have it plugged in while driving. The best battery life SOT I've seen is on the moto z play. My sister has that phone and she got almost 9hrs SOT. Usually gets at least 7. Someone got over 10.
