Hey folks!
I´m one of the most enthusiastic Streak user within us (coming from an HD2 ) and I´m loving my new phone...
BUT: As all of you surely know, the camera is a not-so-funny-joke compared to phones like the HD2. So after many months where nobody has talked about this, my question is: What are your solutions/workaraounds for better pictures?
I´ve just tried the obvious: camera360 & MagicHour. But no, it doesn´t make it much better.
Last but not least: Is there some hope e.g. for getting some better drivers? Hope dies last, I´m praying for some very kind devs with similar intentions
Hmmm everyone knows the Streak's camera is no great and I think this has to do with the camera module itself. Look at HTC's camera, they mostly suck especially in low light conditions and in video recording at night - till now even if there is a great amount of developpers working on htc phones, no one has successfully modded them. And to tell you the truth, considering that the Streak is not that popular for modders, chances are really really weak that someone will work on it.
I think Sony Ericsson X10/Arc/N8/Infuse/Mytouch4G Slide are among the best camera phone if I'm not mistaken.

i also agree. sony ericsson and nokia always best in camera. i also own a streak 5. but my old nokia 6600 slide is 10times better quality photo thn streak though its only 3.2 MP.
I find the Streak's camera is perfect for quick shots, but prefer using my three-year old digital camera since its CCD sensor is larger than the one in the Streak.
With Camera360, the photos come out with a quality more pleasing to the eyes than the stock camera. It's ok to take photos if you are not picky about quality but don't expect jaw-dropping photos!
My fav camera phone goes definitely to the Nokia N8 and Sony Satio/X10 - they maybe a bit old, but when you take photos or videos, you can show them to everyone since the quality is high above than most smartphones!
I use a proper camera if I want to take proper photographs, the Streak is handy for the odd snapshot but it's a phone/tablet device, not a camera.
Yeah, my solution to poor phone cameras is to not use them. If the Streak didn't have a camera I wouldn't miss it.

May I ask you which LG port you mean? The one from this thread?
not 100% but that might be it
I find the camera on the Nexus4 somewhat lacking.
GSMarena just reviewed it and came to the same conclusion.
gsmarena.com/google_nexus_4-review-860p9.php
By looking at their Compare Tool it seems that LG phones have consistently bad cameras.
1) Is the comparatively high noise in Nexus4 pictures most likely due to limitations in the camera hardware
or is it the result of bad software calibration that can be re-adjusted?
2) I'd like more control over the camera like manual ISO and shutter speed settings.
Is there a custom ROM or 3rd party app that can expose these to the user?
EDIT:
The camera module on the Nexus 4 is "Exmor R" IMX111PQ.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964850&page=25
The LG Optimus 4X HD shares the same hardware camera module.
When comparing the 2 phones with the GSMarena's Photo Compare Tool it looks
like the LG Optimus 4X performs better noise-wise but has color balance problems (too much red).
http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=2&idPhone1=5048&idPhone2=4563&idPhone3=4238
Although the Nexus 4's camera is not as good as that of the Samsung Galaxy S3
it seems as though it could be calibrated to perform a bit better than it does at the moment.

Sounds like you have a lot to contribute, asasione. Don't let me slow you down with my useless query.
The camera is important to me. I bought the Nexus4 in a rush without much knowledge of the camera.
After some use I find it lacking so I would like to know if it could be improved.
If not then yes, I will start looking at more capable phones.
Should have done your homework first
Definitely should've done your homework first. Learn your lesson and don't impulse buy next time. With such superior build quality, some things have to suffer to retain the price tag it has. This isn't an $800 iphone after all
The funny thing about you guys making fun of him, is that you don't exactly know what you're talking about either.
Back when the Evo 3D got upgraded to ICS, the Virgin Mobile version of the Evo 3D got significant camera improvements, and the Evo 3D (Sprint and GSM [international]) were left hanging with a camera that was essentially the same as the one that they had back with Gingerbread.
Here's a link to it, if you'd like to see. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1717113&highlight=vm+camera
So to answer your question, yes. Software can be used to enhance the camera. If I were you I'd look in the direction of Sony's mods (Photo editor and related) and check that out. I know that there is a ROM that currently uses this.

Camera module is excellent. on par with probably iphones and s3s, its just a matter of time till someone figures out what lg did wrong with the drivers

Seriously guys, what's the point of these comments? That's a strange attitude.

Thank you, akbisw and thebeastglasser!
This is my understanding as well - there are only a few camera modules out there (mostly Sony ones).
The phone firmware must initially calibrate the module. When taking a photo there are algorithms that work with
the metering system to assign color, aperture, shutter speed, sensitivity and other parameters for each shot.
After the picture is taken it's immediately compressed to JPG and a number of filters like smoothing are applied.
In a real camera there's a processor doing all these tasks but in a phone you already have a CPU and GPU.
The camera drivers have a great influence over the final picture. If we have the source code to the drivers
and people who are knowledgeable in digital photography it's not an impossible task to recalibrate the camera.

I don't comment much but the replies in this thread are ridiculous. It's a simple question. I also bought this phone knowing that the camera wasn't its best feature, but I'm also curious if there is a way to improve the software/drivers to improve it. There have been several examples on XDA where this has happened. If you're going to be an Internet tough guy and only offer useless posts then don't post, you not only waste your time but the OPs too.

I have a suggestion. You can rephrase the question, to something like this:
"I found out that the Nexus 4 has IMX111PQ camera module, which should be on par with the IMX145 found in iPhone 4s. Yet the quality of the image is somewhat lacking [...]"
Citing reviews from some website just invites the trolls waiting around to waste your time.
Back to your question.
I don't think Nexus 4's camera is on par with iPhone 4s or GSG 3's camera. For starter, the pixel size is 20% (edit: 25%) smaller, thus more noises.
But, I do believe in the same thing as Mindroid, akbisw and thebeastglasser, that math can do magic and someone will figure out something to make it works better.

I spent a lot of time thinking how to phrase my question without inviting the trolls. :silly:
GSMarena did scientific benchmarks, their review states the facts, not an opinion.
Can you verify the camera module in the Nexus4 is IMX111PQ (link)? I will update the OP.
AnandTech claims the LG Optimus 4X HD has that camera module.
Using the GSMarena's Image Compare Tool I can see that the LG Optimus 4X has much better
noise performance than the Nexus 4. The colors on the LG 4X are a bit off though.
If both phones share the same camera hardware it seems that the Nexus4 noise issue could indeed
be caused by a bad software calibration.

Hi Mindroid, I am glad I could help.
Nexus 4 detailed technical breakdown can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964850
It is claimed that the module number is from the kernel source code
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33645116&highlight=camera#post33645116
Edit: I looked at the photos.
Nexus 4 is clearly more noisy than Optimus 4X HD, but it is also somewhat sharper.
Assuming the information is correct and the two phones share the same camera chip, the software can definitely be tuned.

Wow, who are you guys? The OP asked a simple and reverent question in the right subforum. Proof of what's become of XDA.
Okay, we had a similar question in the HTC Inspire thread, and we ended up with a good list of camera settings (reduce sharpness, don't use auto-ISO, etc). We get the same question in the Nexus 4 thread and you guys jump down his throat. Nice.
My Nexus 4 hasn't arrived yet, so I haven't had a chance to experiment with it. Admittedly, there is only so much you can do with low-cost hardware, but there are techniques to consider. Until we get some useful answers, you may want to consider some of the things we did for the HTC Inspire (which also has a bit of a lackluster camera):

Great thread indeed. If I have time (probably next week), I'll get a camera app that can enable those settings (hint:stock camera app doesn't have those settings) and do some science
I tried the lgCamera app from the Play Store which is supposed to allow more settings like ISO.
I don't think it's working, the pictures look very similar on all ISO settings. It's impossible to tell
for sure because the picture headers don't have the ISO information.
My old Chinese phone has an Engineering Menu that exposes some of the hardware parameters.
Is there anything similar in Jelly Bean?
You could try Camera FV-5 from the play store. I've used it on my One S and it offers a lot of manual controls. My N4 arrives tomorrow so can't tell you how it works, yet, for this phone.

Agreed, the man asked if the camera can be improved. Don't freaking defend the crappy camera. This is xda. This is where we mod **** till it freaking explodes. Not whine and defend stuff.
Forget picture quality what about sound ! Its terrible on recordings. Background noise sounds garbled. In fact its a chorus for flanger type effect which could be down to the stereo mics?
I think these may not have been discussed before and appear to have been taken with a Z:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mooringrope/
Pixel peeping at 100%, sure they seem to not be that sharp from the noise reduction but I think they'll still do very good prints, maybe as big as A3. I'll probably try printing some when I get mine as a test.
Also, I think responsiveness of the software / speed of capture and control is more important than minor image quality issues.
Edit: I think it may still be a pre-production device. As it's listed on flickr as C6603...
Edit 11th Feb: Later on in this topic, hush66 kindly posted some links to new sample photos which are from a production device and seem a lot better than the ones in my post below.

Edit: Having browsed these images a little bit more, I feel the Z image quality may be a bit disappointing.
This combined with a review mentioning there not being a big difference between 720p and 1080p on the display and the seemingly average battery life as a result, has made me start to consider whether to cancel my pre-order.
First batch looks good to me. Alot different to the second album though... wether the 2nd guy has wobbly hands or just typed the wrong device i have no idea. But from what samples i have seen the pictures usually are very good, and as people say Sony are good in the camera department
Looking good. Maybe it's nothing revolutionary, but low light photos are amazing.
I'm very happy with what I'm seeing in the first batch and those night/low light shots. It is only a phone camera after all so it's unrealistic to expect the world out of it.
Pretty good for a phone. Phone Photos will never be great, even with a big sensor like the nokia, simply because the lens will never be great.
Personally I rather have a thin phone and a separate camera like the rx100 than a heavy and large phone like the pure views.
Photo quality
I read two reviews that said the picture quality Xperia z is not all that. They said there was not a lot of progress in relation to phones like iPhone 5 or galaxy s3.
Very noisy and marketing ...
Companies have to stop fooling people ... cuz eventually lose credibility with the public.
Sony xperia z = Tefefone too thin to have a better camera to nokia 920 and nokia n8
13mp was only for marketing!
Sigh... You only signed up to write that?

Before concluding things it's best that you try out the phone for yourself.
And you may say/think that the pictures aren't all that, but qw all have our different opinions, some may find it enough for their needs, some don't. Some use a dedicated camera, some use their phone. Should I continue?

Companies have to stop fooling people... agreed, but look it from their point of view, in the end they are only doing it to survive in this world. So can we blame them? I'd say no.
Eventually everyone bought a product because some company said that product X was better then product Z from another company. It's for us to figure out what true and what's not. People in general have to look passed their nose and see the actual truth instead of being "misinformed".

Is that your conclusion that the telephone is too thin or did you copied that from a review(s)?
You named 2 other phones... well I'd say test it out and proof that to us.
And yes of course the 13mp is a marketing scheme, but some company has to be the first to announce these kind of things, in xx months I bet there will be more companies introducing a 13mp camera in their phones, will you also call it a marketing scheme then? Or won't you, because multiple companies have the "technology" (referring to the 13mp).

The Nokia pureview 808 is a class all its own. The pictures from it rival just about any point and shoot I've seen at least from 2 feet away or with tux limit of the Nokia zoom.
I was hoping the Z was going to put up a close fight but I'm skeptical at this point. There certainly is hype created by companies but on the case of the Nokia its all backed up. Hopefully Sony hasn't let us down.

Yes, I'm positive the photos were labelled correctly.
I agree the first (labelled no HDR) has better details in the shadows, very interesting.
I agree with people here the photo's that are shown before are not that flash, however the ones posted by hush66 seem to be better, although hard to know for sure because they don't seem to be full res.
I agree to comments here about phone camera being around marketing. HTC tried something around this with the HTC One, I gave the HTC marketing department a bollocking about this, they pulled this marketing off the site a few days later. They were claiming you couldn't tell the difference between photo's taken with a DSLR and HTC One, hahahaha. The sample pictures were 364x268 pixels in size. I challenged them to tell the difference between photos from my Old Nokia N70, Blackberry 8900 and HTC Desire at the same pixels.
The biggest benefit of a point and shoot over the camera of the phone are the optical zooms, image quality is the similar or better than a lot of point and shoots.

Damn, hush's photos are by far the best I've seen of everything posted from the Z so far. I just spend the past couple of hours sifting through random shots taken by the Z before finding this thread, so I'm very aware that the sharpness is quite a bit better in these pics.
Could it be there's a newer firmware update at play? Or are there still others out there taking photos with pre-production units? I know a lot of pics so far have come from websites that've recieved the Z, but what are the chances that Sony sent them pre-production phones vs. final retail units? It'd seem like a silly thing to do, but there's a real world difference between what they were able to do with the camera, and what hush was able to do.
I was really excited to see the spec for the M8.
The spec turned out pretty decent, but the camera.....unbelievable. How can a smart phone be shipped with a poor camera....a flagship smartphone that is.

No OIS equals blurry pics unless you walk around with a tripod.

Thanks much, was looking for something like this for a long time
Thank you very much sir. I like it, easy to get it, in fact I've learn very much from it. hope to see more from you sir:thumbup:
Really nice article, up to mark regarding the current accessible features of z1 (there still were 1 or 2 things i learned, )...
Will you update your blog when we get 5.0 update?

You can count on it!
I'll do so as soon as the update goes live. It's what I'm most excited about anyway, out of everything from Android 5.0 Lollipop
Oh and thanks everyone for the kind words! I did not expect this tutorial to be so interesting for people. I might seriously have to start doing a YouTube tutorial soon (after all, I prefer watching videos to reading as well).
I am following your photos since you first posted in the other thread - also following you on Flickr. I saw this thread when you posted it, but I was too sleepy...
Really nice tutorial, I am using the Z1 camera to take photos and I love its features. It is really a beast! I'm posting them on my Flickr.

Hey XDAers!
I noticed that a lot of people were interested in photography with the Sony Xperia Z1. I'm a hobby photographer and a couple of people seem to appreciate my photography with it.
That's why I decided to share this with you:
A tutorial about the BASICS of your Sony camera phone
A tutorial about the more ADVANCED features
I hope you guys find this useful!
Happy snapping; try something different and creative; keep checking out that blog for more (general) photography tips and most importantly: have fun!

Those Sony Lenses (QX10 or QX100, or the newer variants of which I forgot the model names) are separate cameras meaning that they have their own sensor and software.
It's therefore unrelated to the Xperia Z1's camera and algorithms of course. I'm not sure what you're asking about actually, with these lenses. You can always find people who have tried the lenses (or rather cameras) via Google, to see test shots for example. Again, they're unrelated to the device they're used with anyway
Thank you for all the effort
Great articles Herman, you've clearly spent a great deal of time and effort - thank you for that.
My one gripe with the camera is the spot metering. It would be so good if you could touch the screen to say "meter on this" rather than in the centre. A bit like the touch focus. I guess you'd need some setting to say what to do if the user touched an area on the screen (meter or focus or both).
I previously asked Sony to tell me what was the difference between spot and center metering and they gave me the usual answer - please try repairing your firmware - which was pretty lame.

That's actually a hilarious reply from Sony, in my eyes. Kind of reminds me of the high 10 guy meme.
Thanks for liking the articles! Right now I feel like I've missed a couple of things however, like a more elaborate explanation on Night Mode versus other modes. On your issue: I'm more concerned with other issues like how you have to re-set the ISO after choosing a scene mode or not being able to set shutter speed or shoot in RAW, rather than the metering mode. It is of course a really useful feature to have, but it's a minor one compared to these others, in my opinion.
If I were taking a guess about the spot and center metering is that it's the same as with my canon dslr. Only Sony left out an important keyword that describes it nicely : center WEIGHTED. Meaning that as opposed to average metering which takes the average of the whole frame it will rather focus on a circular section in the center section of the frame. Maybe somewhere there is a tech spec that can disclose how big an area that circle takes. Spot should do what it said. Takes a reading of the object under the meter area which can be the middle of the frame.
On a decent camera you would do a spot meter on the object, lock your exposure and then reframe your shot, focus and take the pic

I'm quite frustrated taking photos near sunset, when the lighting is more favorable, because all of the light sources in the image create long streaks of flaring (as in the sample)
Is there something wrong with my camera?
I've tried adjusting EV, and scene modes, but the flaring is still there.
Any ideas?
