I am trying to reinstall the original system and data onto my S5. I had Cyanogenmod on it, but before I installed CM12, I made a backup of {System, Boot, Data, Modem} as they existed with the stock system using TWRP.
I restored the partitions from my TWRP backup. Now when it boots, after the Samsung animation is shown, I am presented with a screen that says "Device memory damaged" (see attached image).
If I click the "Reset device" button, it boots into TWRP and attempts to clear some data. I assume it's not working because Samsung's stock recovery is supposed to do some magic that TWRP isn't capable of?
I have tried to clear the cache partition, and also tried to restore the data from backup more than once. The MD5 check on my backup files passes. Any ideas?
flash with correct pit and try to root, install cwm/twrp, restore your backup rom
I got it sorted out. I had to use Odin to flash the stock rom, which I downloaded from a questionable source online.

Hello people my phone getting old i think 1.5 year so far my phone started to freeze having lags getting too hot while browsing. And bootloops started without flashing anything. First bootloop happened 2 weeks ago. Today happened again twice i wiped dalvik cache and everything is fine how can i fix it? I thought rom cause it i flashed stock firmware rooted it and removed bloatware. Still happens lags, freeze, getting too hot and bootloop. Is it lollipop update? I never had this issues with kitkat. How can fix this and keep my alive?

Try a full factory reset. Be careful as this will wipe your internal storage.

Thank you for your answer but I did it after flash stock rom via odin. Wiped data / factory reset , cache partition , mounted cache , system , data , wiped dalvik cache..
Wiping data does not equal a factory reset. Wiping data does just that, wipes user installed apps. But generally leaves the internal storage alone.
A factory reset returns the phone to the settings it came out of the factory with, including a clean internal storage(If you have the stock rom). I heard that changing roms and just wiping data, dalvik and cache will still leave behind some files.
But it could also be untrue.

Flashing stock rom is same with factory reset i think clears everything.
I don't know. Haven't flashed stock on this device yet.
But don't most guys recommend doing a wipe before going back to stock?
I dont know i'll try that when i have free time. I did research some guys saying lollipop causing these problems. I'll try wipe before flash stock rom again , if issues keep happen i'll use lates 4.4.2 custom rom. Thank you for your answers i'll report back.
Real reset
This method will wipe everything, including operating system and efs files. Before you do this:
you must root
Download twrp recovery
Install the recovery using the app from the play store
Boot into recovery mode and have twrp backup everything
save your backup to an SD card and the computer (can't hurt to have two backups)
Doing the above will preserve your phone important data like your imei and efs
in case something goes wrong.
NOW
after you have backed everything up use twrp recovery to wipe data. Have twrp wipe everything except for your SD card (don't won't to lose the backup)
After everything has been obliterated have twrp boot you into download mode.
Download Odin from XDA preferably 3.09 (most stable release) and then grab an official stock firmware from a trusted source. The latest stock firmware should be at least 4.4.2
If you have carriers other than t-mobile you will also need to find a PIT file for partitioning.
When you have all of this open up Odin with your phone connected in download mode and make sure repartitioning, clear efs and nand-erase is checked along with the defaults.
Select pda button and choose your firmware (unzipped tar.md5 format.) Then select repartitioning PIT file button and direct to where you have the PIT file downloaded.
now click start (be sure that the Com port is recognized by Odin: will be highlighted in blue or yellow.)
This will take a while depending on your computer.
when it finishes your phone should reboot with a fresh os and filesystem. If you get stuck in a bootloop reboot into recovery mode and do a wipe data and wipe cache. Reboot and your phone should be good as new.
IMPORTANT!!! It is vital you keep your TWRP backups for as long as you have your phone if you lose them and something goes wrong while flashing your phone you will lose important things such as IMEI baseband which will prevent you from connecting to your network and Sim card recognition.
Thank you so much i'll try this now.

Is that another custom recovery?
If so then yes just make sure you have all of your system files and most importantly your efs backed up.
Run odin as administrator if that doesnt work, try using another version of Odin.

What carrier are you using, model number of the phone, etc.
Have you backed everything up? And can you flash the custom recovery through Odin if it fails?
Try it without wiping efs first just to be safe
Look here for your device you will be able to find standalone flash able versions of twrp that should work through odin.

Using i9500. And i did what you said and works fine thank you! Mods close thread please.
I was bootloader unlocked, latest TWRP installed, systemless root with SuperSU 2.6, cataclysm rom, ex kernel, layers, xposed. I had made a ton of backups and even kept some of them backed up in another locations. I needed to restore a backup in TWRP. At first it wouldn't let me, kept saying that phone system was mounted as read only.
this is my question #1 - How do you mount system for read in TWRP? I see there's an option called "mount," I go in there, i see settings I can select, but I don't see any option to "execute" or "apply" settings (like TWRP has on other screens - swipe to backup, swipe to restore, etc). There's no "clicke here to mount option." what do you do here?
#2 - it finally mounted rw, i think, but after picking my latest backup, it started and then when it got to 19% it reboot the phone. Phone is softbricked.
#3 - I'm very confused about all the checkboxes to restore, and all the checkboxes to wipe.
What should I be wiping and what should I be restoring? When making backups I checked all the boxes.
I had the galaxy nexus before and I knew that phone and clockworck mod inside out. TWRP is confusing and glitchy to me. I'm stuck and work with a phone without an OS and I'm starting to freak out, and don't have A to C cables with me.
Please explain where I went wrong here and how to do things correctly. I want to understand what I'm doing better, not just follow steps.
When you restored, with all the check boxes did you click "system image" for restore?
You should wipe then restore only system, data, and boot.

Yes, I selected all the boxes, including system image I believe.
I did a wipe. I selected all the boxes. Went back into TWRP and now all my backups are gone. I said reboot, and TWRP said there's no OS installed. I think I deleted everything. I should not have wiped. I do have a backup saved on a computer, it's a folder with lots of .img files inside. How can I get that onto my phone with only having fastboot and TWRP modes available? I mean how can I place it on the phone in a way that TWRP would recognize it and restore from it.
I ended up just flashing the stock google image and that at least gave me a working phone back.
Yes. You beat me to it, that's what I was going to say. You have to reflash. Just remember for future references you only need to backup boot, system, and data( and efs etc). But Not "system image" that'll Bork your stuff up.

I'd like to really understand this better. Do you know why system image borks the phone? Also, when you say efs etc., do you mean "absolutely everything except system image"? (I actually didn't see EFS listed there)
Well boot system and data. But you also need efs cause thats your imei. So just look around and familiarize with what youve found so far. Right now Im trying to flash 6.0.1 with a systemless root. Its kinda goin ridiculous right now because there aren't any directions or suggestions.
If you get to "no OS installed" restoring system image, then system will get you back

After it said no OS installed, I tried to restore system image from my TWRP backup, and the restore failed and the phone reboot itself at 19% restored. I had to ADB flash the factory system image from google. This brings me back to the original question.
Why was the restore in TWRP failing?
Did you mount system in TWRP before attempting to restore?

actually in twrp you could of wiped, then restored boot, system , data and it would of restored everything
Hello,
before I played around with getting root and flashing custom roms, I backup everything in Samsung Smart Switch.
After getting root and install TWRP, I backup the whole system (except the recovery partition) to the external sd-card from TWRP.
Now - after getting some experience with custom roms - I will go back to the stock rom from my TWRP-Backup. Set everything to factory default, wipe cache and dalvik and press restore. Select my backup... swipe to flash... everything seems ok. After reboot - no bootloop - a thousands of alert-messages pops up "blabla-app stopped"... Then appears only a black screen.
How can i restore my backup from TWRP? Or is there a stock-rom, so i can backup from smart switch? My System is a LRX21T.G900FXXU1BOJ1
Thanks alot!
Try clearing the caches from recovery and boot again
If it fails, try wiping everything again, then restore all partitions except DATA
See if it boots
If it boots - either reinstall apps etc manually, or use TiBu to restore the DATA partition
I've got it!
I flashed a stock rom with odin and restore with smart switch. Some settings are missing, but i think 90% is restored
Nice job
I just got a s5. And I got it succesfully rooted and also got TWRP working on it.
All the data from my previous phone was transfered to the s5.
Now I made some backups with TWRP with the default settings: Partitions boot, system and data.
With the backups in mind I was thinking I could easily restore it to a previous state.
Thinking I backed up all the data and wanted to make it fresh again, I wanted to restore it.
In the menu I chose the restore option with the same settings as the backup: Partitions boot, system and data.
And it gives a message restoring system succesfull.
But when rebooting, it keeps hanging and at the moment of loading the android system every bit of the system keeps 'hanging'
It keeps saying
'Unfortunately touchwiz startup unsuccesfully'
'Unfortunately youtube startup unsuccesfully'
'Unfortunately greenify startup unsuccesfully'
'Unfortunately app whatever startup unsuccesfully'
And so on and so on
Eventually it starts with a black screen with nothing loaded. Complete blackout.
So this backup doesn't work. And I try my second backup.
Unfortunately also the second backup gave these errors.
And also the third backup!
So the backup files seem the right size, it's some gigabytes, and it alway's keeps saying backup/restore succesfully.
But now it fails to restore and boot the backup
The things I tried.
-Trying three different backups
-Wiping cleaning data/dalvik/cache etc etc
-Restoring a part of the backup. First system, then data, then boot, no succes.
So i'm totally lost! Does somebody know how to fix this? Or have some tips to try??
You can't restore system and boot from a different model phone
That would be like trying to flash a ROM for one model phone to another without porting it
If it was an S5 you backed up, was it the exact same model (ie: G900F etc?)
Flash back to stock, then try restoring only DATA
Or use TiBu to restore your apps from the TWRP backup

Thanks for the reply! It was a backup and restore on the same phone. So that is why I thought it was supposed to be a easy restore.
But I found the solution hidden somewhere in one message on XDA:
Would you happen to know why, when restoring a TW 4.4.2 nandroid using TWRP 2.8.1 or 2.8.4, after running an AOSP lollipop ROM like CM12, the TW ROM boots but then the whole system force-closes? Before restoring the nandroid, I advance wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik. Then I restore the nandroid. It boots, but then some daemon crashes. Then all processes and apps. The screen goes black after a few crashes.
So, what I do is pull out the battery, boot into recovery, advance wipe system, data, cache, dalvik, flash a CM11 ROM, reboot. I let CM11 start up, skip the set-up, then I boot back to TWRP (2.8.1 and now 2.8.4), advanced wipe, restore TW nandroid, and now it works just fine.
It seems like TWRP doesn't fully wipe."
Here the steps for if other people will run into the same problem:
Problem: Android 5 is running, with twrp 2.7 performed a back up = Restoring the backup is difficult because it problably doesn't do a clean wipe somehow.
1. I downloaded a cyanogen 11 rom, a Android 4 version.
2. Installed it with TWRP. Somehow it 'wipes' it more efficiently.
3. From cyanogen 11 back to booting TWRP.
4. In TWRP trying the Android 5 restore.
And Amazingly this worked!! = Celebrate!!

Hello,
since one week my device, a samsung galaxy s4 i9505, is software bricked and stuck on bootlogo and I've been tryin to save my internal storage, but I'm close to giving up. I hope someone here can help me.
My situation:
1. Updated my TWRP to version 3.0.1-0-jfltexx with odin 3.10.0
2. Flashed new ROM "OMEGA ROM", that worked good.
3. Backup with TWRP, successfull, reboot, galaxy logo appears, flash, again -> bootloop
4. Flashed firmware "i9505XXUHOB8" BL and modem, with odin 3.10.0 in BL and CP
5. No bootloop anymore, but stuck on ROM Logo with normal start and with recovery start blue text "recovery booting..." on galaxy screen but nothing happens.
6. Saw that TWRP 2.8.7.0-i9500 is the recommended TWRP for the i9505, flashed the .img.tar with odin 3.09 in AP (is the .img a problem?) but still same problem, with TWRP 2.8.6.0-i9500.tar too.
6. Tried different firmwares: i9505XXUHOB7, i9505XXUHOF2, i9505XXUHOJ4 -> I thought the problem is the bootloader -> odin error: complete (write) operation failed or NAND write error (->problem was usb port)
7. Tried different odin versions: 1.85, 3.10.6, 3.09
8. Tried different usb cables
9. Flashed cf-auto-root to mount the data partition, but theres no option. Recovery mode is now working, but the samsung recovery, not TWRP.
10. Tried to copy internal storage with ADB, can navigate the directory but can't pull or cd /storage/sdcard0 -> no such file or directory, same with /mnt/sdcard (ADB only works during the ROM logo)
11. Flashed stock samsung firmware "i9505XXUHOJ2_i9505AUTHXXUHOJ1_i9505XXUHOJ2" with odin 3.09 -> now stuck on samsung boot logo. My ROM is now deleted, right?
12. Wipe cache don't help
13. Could wipe data/factory reset or repartition with odin but then I will lost my internal storage.....
I have a backup from the successfull backup with TWRP, but can't open the data.ext4.win001 after rename it (the .win000 is ok)....
Can anyone help me or have an idea how can I save my data and repair the system?
-Mr.Tea
use TWRP to copy files from internal storage over to external SDcard for stuff you wanna keep.
if you manage to backup the data partition you're supposed to be able to extract apps and data from a nandroid with titanium backup pro (never tried it though).
this data you wanna save, if it wasn't created while running omega rom then it wasn't likely to work with it anyway. that could be the source of your bootloops. if that data came from a previous custom rom then try to go back to it, and if successful backup apps with titanium and files to SDcard. you can't keep your data partition and go into a new rom with it.
if the data came from a stock rom you'll loose it trying to go back so extracting from a nandroid is probably your best bet there or restoring once back to stock.

TWRP is not working anymore -> blue text "Recovery booting..." on galaxy logo
In many forums they mean TWRP backup not includes the internal storage (/sdcard partition)?!
Can extract my "data.ext4.win000" and "data.ext4.win001" but not find the /sdcard location or my userdata.

try TWRP 3.0.0 by JDCteam, hundreds of happy users there. if it works first time make sure to try backing up your data partition and then wiping it. you can copy your media storage with the built-in file browser as mentioned.
you've got bigger problems if it's not data causing your problems...
