If you have Battery Drain after root/twrp - Do this to Fix! - Galaxy S6 General

This is coming up again and again so I thought I'd make a thread. Hopefully people will see it.
Many/All users are reporting the loss of deep sleep after root and twrp.
You can check to see if your device is going into deep sleep by installing CPUspy.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy&hl=en
Open CPUspy once and then leave your phone in standby for five to ten minutes.
Open CPUspy back up and see if you have anything showing in the deep sleep section. Any percentage means you have deep sleep. Blank means you do not.
You need to flash your Stock recovery.img
You can use an app like Flashify or use Odin.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify&hl=en
You can get your stock recovery by downloading your Stock ROM from one of the links below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/stock-firmware-official-stock-firmware-t3086387
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/search/galaxy s6/
Once you have the ROM in .rar you can extract it like any zip file.
Then you'll have a .tar file. Extract that the same way once more and you'll have folders. The recovery.img is inside.
For Flashify: Transfer the recovery.img to your phone somewhere. Open Flashify and install.
You should now have deep sleep.
Leave your phone in standby for a bit and then check CPUspy again to confirm.
You should only need to do this once after installing twrp. Then you can go nuts with ROM's and still have deep sleep.
It needs to be in this sequence:
root > twrp > rom/nothing > stock recovery > twrp again > then nothing or install your new ROM and you shouldn't need to worry about it again.

If you're rooted with twrp recovery, wouldn't flashing a rom fix that issue?

According to what users have been reporting so far with the very limited ROM selection we have now..
No. It does not for some reason.
It needs to be in this sequence:
root > twrp > rom/nothing > stock recovery > twrp again > then nothing or install your new ROM

I have to flash stock then twrp everytime i flash a rom it seems

I downloaded the firmware from http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/stock-firmware-official-stock-firmware-t3086387 but all it has inside is a .tar? I can't right click and extract that to get a recovery img?
EDIT: Ok I found it inside, but in Odin it needs a different file format? or do I just flash the whole firmware? Sorry for all the questions!

Just put recovery.img on the phones storage somewhere and use the Flashify app.
That's really the easiest way.

Worked a treat, phone now enters deep sleep.
Thank you.

If you have already rooted, installed twrp and a new rom then you might want to try since you're now sort of stuck.
I would only try if it's the same model, country and bands though.
If you haven't rooted and installed twrp yet then you should make sure you have a stock recovery that will work on hand before you do.

did the flash
but still no deep sleep and i do not have TWRP recovery anymore
should i install TWRP again?

It should work provided you have the right recovery.img and the flash was successful.
Yes. You need to reinstall twrp after recovery assuming you want to do something with it. Otherwise you could not install it.

It's more of a time thing. For me, whenever my screen is off, the phone is in deep sleep. I can lock the phone, count to 10, then unlock and my deep sleep is 10 seconds higher than it was before.
Depending on what you have your phone set to do (syncing, background stuff, etc), you may not have deep sleep for the entire time that your screen is off, but it should be fairly close. If it isn't, then you have something keeping your phone awake. That's when you get an app like Better Battery Stats (if you're rooted) and investigate your wakelocks. Wakelocks aren't specific to this phone, so there are a lot of guides on the internet (including many from XDA).

For this specific issue you would have None. It would be totally blank under the deep sleep section if you had No deep sleep.
Any percent means that you do have deep sleep.
If you have some deep sleep but still not great battery life then you can look at wakelocks, rogue apps and such with batter stat apps.
But this is the big one people are having really poor battery with.

Deep sleep worked on stock recovery. However when I'm back in TWRP it won't again.
by the way I installed TWRP first before rooting. Shout it be the other way around? If yes how do we unroot?

Love you.
Was trying to figure out what was causing my phone to not sleep from day 1. Beautiful.
Should do wonders for battery life!

Desperately trying to get Fascinate unbricked!

I have a huge problem.
I rooted my wife's (yea...my wife's...) Fascinate last night. The root method I used worked like a charm. I installed ROM Manager. Again...no problem. Flashed ClockWork Mod no problem as well. I selected "reboot to recovery" to do a nandroid as I've done on numerous other phones. In fact, ALL of this I've done on numerous times on half a dozen different phones.
When it rebooted, instead of it being in Nandroid, it was in the regular stock recovery. My stomach sank...lol
It would just reboot...that's it. Is there a loop with the fascinate? How do I get out of it if so?
At one point, the phone wouldn't do ANYTHING...all that would happen when I plugged it in was a little computer and cell phone would pop up on the screen. No recovery, no nothing. So, after lots of digging and reading, I found the files here that I thought I'd need to reflash the system using odin. I got the /system file, the kernal and the recovery. I flashed the kernal...worked perfectly. Flashed the recovery...again, perfect (and recovery is back but still in a reboot loop...) When I try the .tar.md5 system file, it says md5 is invalid so I changed it to a straight .tar file and it worked all the way up to the very end, then it stops. That's it.
I just need the phone to work again for my wife. I don't care if I even flash a new custom rom (which I can't fine one of that works!) or if it's just simply restoring the stock system files.
ANY AND ALL HELP GREATLY appreciated, guys. Thanks!!
To get to cwm, you have to select "apply update.zip" from stock recovery. This is how fascinate and a few other galaxy s cwm works. Also don't ever delete the update.zip file from sd card.
But to start out....
Step 1: Start with Odin:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
A. Flash system and pit together
B. Flash kernel
C. Flash recovery
*Important note: in Odin, always use PDA!!!! Using phone will cause huge issues.
Step 2: Flash cwm:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/458252/CWMrecovery.tar
*note: this is an Odin file, again flash using PDA
Your phone will end up stock, rooted and with cwm.
That's very interesting. Here's why:
A) It tried to flash the update and the update failed.
B) My Vibrant didn't require this step.
So...as I was typing that, I had the tar.md5 downloading again. Apparently 4th time was a charm because it worked and I'm back up and running.
Thank you all SO MUCH for the STUPID fast replies. Very very cool!!!
Rooting aside if you want to just fix it, I can help you with that. Nothing more though. Interested?

spent 90% of the last few days of my life trying to "unbrick" my phone. i kno some of you will argue that its not really bricked but hell, a screen lighting up does not mean its more useful than a brick. anyway my problem is as follows:
the one and only thing my phone will boot to is download mode. absolutely no recovery. i have flashed via odin the stock modem system and recovery files countless times, sometimes successfully sometimes with error. even when doing so succesfullly the phone gains absolutely no functions. still download mode or black screen. only real thing i can mention that may have led to this issue is that i flashed stock kernel over voodoo lag fix without doing anything to it first. Please help.

I had the same problem when I flashed the non-voodoo over voodoo and spent hours trying to fix the boot loop. I followed the instruction here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204 but still running into the boot loop (recovery mode) then I flashed with the file from here via ODIN http://adrynalyne.us/files/kernels/DI01package3.tar.md5 and it restored my phone back to factory. From there you would have to do the root procedure again. Hope this helps.

There is no update.zip method to unbrick. You will need to re-download a working copy of Odin or figure out how to make Odin work to do a factory restore with it.
Download the di01 complete package and use pda in odin to restore it.

Brick (I guess)

I just bricked my device I guess.
First off flashed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162302
TouchWiz UX for 10.1
- Cleared all (factory reset)
Which was working nicely, but then I needed some extra kernel modules, so I installed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175299
3.1 Galaxy Tab Wifi OC1.6
- Cleared all (factory reset)
It booted at first, but then rebooted and eventually went to black screen. Now powering up won't work.
So yes it really won't come to life out of it's own.
-------------
My first step: Hang it to a PC
Well it recognized the tab, and was asking for the APX driver, which I found over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11901016&postcount=75
Which installed correctly, and is recognizing my device (for now).
Who can help me further (it is possible to backup and restore using nvflash)
-- Update 0x4 error...
NVFlash seems to be a dead end. You can't use it without sbk, which we don't have. Any more suggestions?
Use Odin to flash CWM recovery (if you haven't already), then reinstall a ROM using Clockwork Mod.
sassafras
Could be "sleep of death" there are other threads on here about it. There are various ideas about waking it up, but just letting the battery discharge and then charging it worked for my (unmodded) tab. Admittedly that is a little tricky when you can't power it on in the first place!

Been there, done that... I've flashed all through CWM recovery, always made a backup, but it doesn't go through the bootloader anymore, so I can't access the recovery, nor the download mode (for Odin flashing).
The only thing I can access at the moment is that stupid NVFlash, and since my device is I/O locked, I can't flash anything.

I will check on this. It's the only way to fully reset my device. Since it is I/O locked, it can't have harmed my bootloader or CWM recovery.
I made sure before flashing that the MD5 checksum was right (which it was). The only thing it flashed was a kernel. Well I will drain my battery and check if it is possible to boot it up after that. Else I buy a new one
Exact same thing happened to me.. ran poitee kernel over OTA update.. killed everything but nvflash + all black screen.
Cannot get it to flash w/ bootloader.. Have 2 days to RMA and I really don't want my data out there in the event this thing comes back up after the battery dies.
PS- My unit was bootloader unlocked and rooted.

[Q] Root instructions minus the video?

I've been reading through (been out a while) and all I can see is video this and video that.
Are there any text based instructions for rooting/new rom/ etc. anymore for those of us who can actually read and don't have time to sit through an unnecessary video?
assuming you are running gingerbread? grab a rom/kernel with superuser and put on sd card. flash cwm with odin with reboot unchecked. after odin is done disconnect usb and pull battery. replace battery and boot into recovery(vol down, camera power all together) you should be in cwm not stock recovery. if stock recovery then repeat. flash your rom/kernel.it is all in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655 i recommend reading through not just op.

No, only reboot should be checked. There's no reason to repartition the nand since it still has the same partitions sizes the pit file will allocate and reset f. time (or whatever it is) is pretty much useless. Reboot needs to be checked so you don't need to pull the battery and risk something going wrong. Just let the phone boot and make sure all is good before booting into cwm.
if phone reboots it will overwrite recovery. if you leave reboot checked you have to 3 finger as soon as screen goes black after flashing recovery. unless you are using an odin flashable rom with root then yes only reboot checked. there are many options that is why video is good.

Here's a guide I threw together a while back..
Biggest thing not mentioned is "make sure reboot is not checked" when flashing recovery.
(Otherwise, as already mentioned, the stock kernel will overwrite recovery if you let it boot normally.)
It really doesn't get much simpler.
PS- it's an old guide so feel free to substitute a newer CWM recovery version and rooted kernel (than what is referred to).

[Q] S4 Bootloop, Can enter download but not recovery

Hi,
I have been searching and searching. I tried to install a kernel to my phone, its been forever so i don't remember which one.
It just reboots every 5 seconds without any screens coming up. I can not get into recovery mode
I can get into download mode and have flashed stock I337UCUAMDB_ATTAMDB_I337UCUAMDB with odin, but it doesnt fix anything.
What can I do to get to stock recovery and fix my phone?
What happens if you put it on download mode and then cancel with vol down
It falls back into the bootloop of restarting every 5 seconds with no screens coming up. No entry into recovery.
And if you pull the battery and put it back in does it try to boot?
What firmware were you on and was it loki'd if you were on mdl?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
I have taken the battery out and replaced it. It does not automatically try to boot. After pressing power it goes into the same boot cycle. Also, thank you for your quick attention!

Previous to my obvious blunder with the kernel download, I was using goldeneye rom from android develepment, sucessfully.
Dont know if that answers the question but i have also tried to flash AMDL with odin but have the same results.

I have done it multiple times, perhaps panicking, I checked the re-partition button. I have tried to get a PIT file downloaded and tried to use that.
However, this behavior was happening before I did that. It started boot looping as soon as i tried to use TWRP to flash the kernel (I know i am an idiot, and didn't read first). As soon as this started happening, that's when I immediately tried to flash AMDL (exactly as you described with only those options checked) through odin and it didn't do anything different. That's when i tried other options. I fear i may have broken my phone. Again thank you for your attention.

i've never seen a kernel hard brick a device or corrupt the recovery partition. i also rarely see a user flash a file and not remember what they just flashed. he/she possibly flashed an incompatible kernel or flashed a non-loki'd kernel without flashing loki-doki. either way, recovery would still be accessible to correct this issue. i feel that there is more to this.
OP, see jd's jtag post above.

[Q] i9505 No OS

Hi guys
I had my rooted S4 (TWRP)
Every now and then it would reboot like there was no battery power left (battery history graph always showed 0% just in that very moment when my phone would reboot)
So I thought I'd re-root it and what I did first was saving all my files to my computer.
Then I went to Teamwin Recovery menu and deleted all the caches and all files and everything A FEW TIMES. (don't ask why, I don't even know)
After that I tried to flash it again with the root-OS and it did everything wonderfully fast and everything (using Odin)
Then I tried to boot but it didn't work.
I flashed the recovery tar (I think it was a tar file)
and thus the process of rooting was done as far as the tutorial went that I used
I turned my phone on and that's where I am now:
No OS (seemingly, also it was written in I think the stock recovery menu [because I tried to flash the stock files])
Phone keeps showing me the "Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-i9505"-screen and does nothing else.
Have I bricked this thing or is there a way to get it working again?
Thank you all in advance.
